- Chapter 20 - The Right Not to Forgive
“Don’t you think our book club students are truly wonderful?”
We were having a brief tea party while conducting a morning meeting in the office. Madam Marian spoke up, wearing an admiring smile.
“That’s right. Their eyes sparkled during class,” Rose chimed in, agreeing.
Trying to hide my pleased smile, I lifted my teacup and spoke.
“Two weeks have already passed since the opening. There was a lot of trial and error at first, but thanks to the students’ enthusiastic participation, I’ve been enjoying watching them.”
Held three times a week across four periods, the book club consisted of lectures in politics, history, socioeconomics, and literature.
Renowned scholars from each field had been invited to form the faculty, which was possible thanks to Director William’s extensive connections in academia.
Rose tapped the tip of her fan.
“The teaching method is quite unique, after all. I was surprised when I first heard the method proposed by Head Librarian Erika.”
Madam Marian also nodded and added her thoughts.
“Yes. It was our first time experiencing a format where people don’t just sit and listen to a lecture but directly share opinions and participate, so it was difficult for us to adjust as well.”
Each class was conducted in a format of presenting and debating research findings based on a designated topic.
Faced with this unfamiliar and novel teaching style, the young ladies were initially flustered or embarrassed. Soon, however, they adapted with an enthusiastic attitude.
“I thought they were just quiet and gentle young ladies. But whenever class starts, they pour out questions with fire in their eyes. Once, the debate went on for so long that the professor couldn’t even go to the restroom and was completely flustered. Hoho.”
As Rose burst into laughter finding it amusing, Madam Marian nodded and asked.
“Ah, the young lady who held onto Professor Graham to debate for over an hour was…”
With a proud and boastful smile, I quickly provided the young lady’s name.
“Yes. It was Lady Reina Douglas.”
“As expected of the daughter of the Douglas family, renowned for their scholarship.”
The student who stood out the most in the book club was indeed Reina.
She asked precise questions that pierced through the core, and advanced clear yet logical arguments, to the point that even the faculty marveled at her brilliance.
Reina displayed an academic fervor by preparing and reading dozens of books for every class, and the other students followed her example and participated passionately.
The faculty also did not spare praise, saying that teaching the book club students had reawakened their passion for academics.
“Lady Freesia is also helping a lot by making the atmosphere of the book club warm, isn’t she?”
Rose mentioned Freesia as if she just remembered.
My mouth itched because I wanted to brag about my favorite character.
‘Our female lead is kind, gentle, smart, and basically good at everything!’
However, I decided to restrain myself, thinking it wouldn’t be good to show obvious favoritism toward Freesia.
“Yes. She kindly teaches the young ladies what they don’t know and helps everyone mingle during the tea parties.”
Freesia demonstrated outstanding comprehension, interpretation, and sensitivity in the field of literature.
Seeing her kindly answering questions she didn’t know or benevolently embracing people, several students looked up to and followed her.
Rose pulled out the list of crown princess candidates to check it for a moment, and then asked, “The other candidates are also participating well. How do you view Lady Schpern?”
At her question, Madam Marian set her teacup down and pushed up her glasses.
“As expected of a young lady from the prestigious ducal House of Schpern, she possesses outstanding qualities.”
Rose pouted her lips and grumbled.
“The world is unfair. To think that she’s smart on top of being a young lady from a ducal family with wealth and honor! I thought she would actually be foolish and just act conceited.”
At Rose’s blunt criticism, Madam Marian furrowed her brows and clicked her tongue.
“Librarian Rose, Lady Schpern is a student of our book club, so watch your words. You must refrain from personal opinions.”
I came to realize that the reason Eliade had been able to reign as the queen of society all this time was partly due to the power of the Schpern family, but above all, thanks to her brilliant mind.
She understood the classes quickly and accurately, and always presented answers that exceeded what the faculty hoped for.
Her knowledge of politics and history in particular was remarkably deep, to the point that it would not be a stretch for her to work in the House of Lords right away.
“Lady Schpern is a brilliant person, but unfortunately, she seems unable to discard her habits from high society.”
I calmly broke the ice while drinking my tea. Rose blinked her eyes, waiting for this, and chimed in.
“Exactly. She couldn’t discard her habit of putting on airs and looking down on others in high society. Perhaps that’s why no one tries to get close to her, so she walks around alone. She must have been quite flustered too. In high society, everyone is busy flattering her first, but no one does that here.”
Rose fanned herself gently, wearing an expression that said it served her right. At that sight, Madam Marian smiled as if she couldn’t help it.
I also wanted to burst into a refreshing laugh, but I held it in since I was in a position where I had to maintain neutrality.
“Because this is a place where high society connections are not needed. I am just grateful that all of our book club students are doing so well.”
“Ah, by the way, how is the archery class progressing?”
At Madam Marian’s question, a sigh slipped out of me without my realizing.
The archery class was managed by myself and a bowman dispatched from the Royal Palace Knights.
The classes were held twice a week for the students who applied.
Freesia, who was physically weak, had given up participating early on, and Eliade along with the other crown princess candidates also declined, stating they would not participate in dangerous classes.
Furthermore, the students who did take the class were clumsy in their skills, so no progress was being made.
“Everyone finds even drawing the bowstring difficult. We are currently doing basic training to build physical strength.”
“If the students are having a hard time, how about stopping the class? Their hands will get hurt, and I am worried about safety as well.”
Madam Marian spoke with a voice mixed with concern. Her words did make sense.
While noble young lords received sword and bow lessons as liberal arts subjects from an early age, young ladies learned things like how to walk with an elegant posture or flower arranging.
At most, those soft and fine hands, which had only ever been pricked by rose thorns, were getting bruised or torn from being pressed by the taut bowstring.
However, the expressions of those ladies as they struggled to draw the bowstring were serious and filled with determination. Anyone who saw those expressions would not have the heart to tell them to put down the bow.
I shook my head firmly.
“They are all clumsy, but they are practicing archery diligently. It will surely give them the strength to protect themselves and protect their precious people.”
Having listened closely to my words, the lady smiled softly.
“I will trust the judgment of the Head Librarian.”
“Great! I thought about it while the two of you were talking, how about this? The Book Club Archery Unit! Our students holding bows as a group and fighting coolly!”
Rose spoke excitedly, clenching her fists.
I felt sorry for throwing cold water on the energetic Rose, but wouldn’t that be the worst-case scenario?
If even the young ladies had to step up holding weapons, it would mean the kingdom’s capital was on the verge of being occupied by enemy forces or monsters. Such a thing must absolutely never happen.
“Don’t get too far ahead of yourself. For now, let’s just encourage the students.”
Since I couldn’t state the realistic problems point by point, I shrugged my shoulders and smiled.
I prepared to stand up while tidying the documents scattered untidily on the table.
“Let’s end the meeting here. It’s a big problem that the tea party time only increased under the pretext of a meeting. It’s a relief the Director isn’t here; if he knew, he would misunderstand that we are just idling around instead of working.”
Madam Marian lightly covered her mouth and smiled.
“Fufu. Librarian Erika didn’t know. The one who created the morning meeting tea party was actually the Director.”
“Really? I thought he was diligent, but the Director secretly enjoys playing around too.”
Just then, the sound of precisely two knocks echoed on the office door. Rose’s eyes twinkled at the sound of the knock.
“Who could it be from early morning? Could the Director have returned already?”
Speak of the devil, had William returned?
It was three days ago that a letter arrived saying he could not commute to the library due to preparations for establishing a new knight order.
Or could it be, by any chance, that something happened?
Anxiety spread in an instant like poison. Why did Callix come to mind at the end of that anxiety?
The mere thought of something bad happening to him made it hard to breathe and caused my heart to beat disorientedly.
While I was hesitating, Rose crossed the room and threw the door wide open in a single bound.
“Director, welcome back, oh?”
Rose, who opened the door, froze as if surprised.
“Who is here, Rose?”
I walked over to her to check who the visitor beyond the door was.
A middle-aged noble with a rigid impression, he wore neatly combed-back brown hair without a single stray strand and a navy frock coat.
It was Marquis Wilt Reichen, the Prime Minister of Ruberia and the Chairman of the House of Lords.
We were lost for words at the appearance of such a precious visitor who had arrived without any notice. Madam Marian, who was quick to assess situations, paid her respects and greeted him first.
“Chairman Reichen, thank you for visiting the Royal Library. Excuse me, but what brings you here?”
He nodded his chin with a expressionless face. His icy brown eyes felt as if they were piercing through me entirely.
“I came to have a conversation about books with Head Librarian Erika.”
After Madam Marian and Rose left the room, Chairman Reichen entered the office.
He slowly looked around the interior furniture and decorations with a sharp gaze.
“It is an impressive office.”
“Everyone says that when they first come here. Actually, it is not to my taste. It’s furniture I received as a gift because I had no choice.”
“I can tell at a glance. His Royal Highness the Crown Prince’s lavish taste is reflected exactly as it is.”
Chairman Reichen examined the furniture with sharp eyes like an antique appraiser. Then, he murmured with an ominous smile.
“I did not expect this place to be His Highness’s secret meeting place rather than a librarian’s office, however…”
At his absurd statement, I cried out in a hurry, completely startled as if burned by fire.
“What?! Absolutely not! It is a misunderstanding, Chairman.”
‘Just what is that man’s intention in coming here?’
I couldn’t predict his hidden motive at all, so cold sweat broke out automatically.
“Chairman, please wait a moment. I will bring some tea.”
I entered the small kitchen attached to the office and placed the teapot on the hearth. While the tea water boiled, I thought about Chairman Reichen’s purpose for visiting.
If the Chairman were making an official visit to the library, William would have contacted me in advance. The fact that a high-ranking noble like him visited without notice meant…
It meant it was an unofficial visit that he didn’t want to make known to others.
What reason would he have to seek me out without notice?
Could it be because of the book club?
As the Chairman, he would surely know the information that there were crown princess candidates in the book club.
I tried my best not to show my nervousness as I brought out the teacup supported on a tray. Chairman Reichen leisurely savored the tea I handed him.
“The taste of the tea is excellent.”
“Thank you.”
He offered a formal greeting, and I also replied in kind. Afterward, only an awkward and heavy silence lingered.
An interesting light faintly surfaced on the Chairman’s expressionless face as he set down his teacup.
“I heard that the book club currently being held at the Royal Library is a big topic of conversation in high society.”
“Is that so. As expected, news travels fast in high society.”
“I heard Her Majesty the Queen supports it and watches it with interest. It is full of praise that the faculty is excellent and the course curriculum is deep.”
“You flatter us. It is thanks to the students’ passion and effort.”
I answered humbly, but my throat parched up from tension.
‘As expected, he came because of the book club!’
Come to think of it, I heard that the Chairman had a young only daughter who had not yet had her debutante.
Could he have come to make an improper solicitation to have his daughter participate in the book club?
As the book club became known in high society and rumors of the Queen’s sponsorship were added, inquiries came in from various nobles. However, because the capacity was already full, and I wanted to select young ladies from difficult circumstances first rather than those from prestigious families for the remaining seats, I had been declining them politely.
Marquis Reichen, the powerhouse of Ruberia who was responsible for national operations planning and practical affairs.
If he, who was a clean and rigid loyalist who maintained laws and principles like honor, made a request even while discarding his beliefs, would I be able to refuse?
When my thoughts reached this point, cold sweat broke out on my back. I tightly clenched my hands resting on my knees.
The monocle resting on Chairman Reichen’s nose flashed as it caught the light. Seeing that light emitting sharply like a blade made me shiver.
“Lady Diel.”
He spoke up in a calm tone.
“Please become my daughter’s older sister.”
“……Pardon?”
I almost sprayed the tea I was drinking. What did I just hear?
Could it be that he was suffering mentally due to extreme pressure regarding national operations?
I carefully examined him up and down with a pitiful gaze. Conscious of my gaze, he cleared his throat awkwardly.
“I am telling you in advance, but my mind is sound. Do not misunderstand.”
His brown eyes stared at me as if evaluating me.
“I shall make the proposal formally again. I wish to adopt Lady Diel as my daughter. I will treat you exactly the same as my biological daughter and give you unsparing support. If you wish to become the crown princess, I will support you with all my might.”
It was only after hearing the Chairman’s statement that I understood the whole situation, as if fitting the final puzzle piece.
‘Is it because of political calculations after all?’
To think that even Chairman Reichen, who was said not to covet power, would leap into the muddy battle of crown princess candidates to the point of adopting a daughter.
A bitter smile came out. Just what on earth was something like power.
“Haven’t you chosen the wrong investment target? I am just a librarian from a viscount family who didn’t even make it onto the crown princess candidate list.”
Despite my sarcasm, his expression remained nonchalant.
“Lady Diel, you are misunderstanding. If I had coveted the position of crown princess, I would have put my daughter forward as a candidate. She is still young, but in a few years, she will be of a sufficient age.”
“Why don’t you put your daughter forward as a crown princess candidate?”
Before I knew it, my voice rose as if arguing. He furrowed his brow as if distressed.
“Ahem, looking at it from an objective standpoint, my daughter is…”
He suddenly stopped talking and lowered his head. His eyes shaking beyond his monocle were vivid.
‘Could it be because of… a father’s heart?’
Was it a plan to set up an adopted daughter as a proxy to prevent his beloved daughter from becoming a political scapegoat?
Chairman Reichen, who composed his emotions, straightened his back and stared straight at me.
“It is lamentable, but my daughter does not possess even the basic qualities of a crown princess. If that child becomes the crown princess, it will cause great harm to the kingdom.”
He made a cold evaluation of his own daughter with an unshakeable expression. For a moment, I was at a loss for words.
‘This is more ruthless than an idol audition evaluation evaluation, isn’t it?’
As expected, he was a man strict with rules and principles even with his own child.
It became clear that Chairman Reichen was not trying to adopt me out of mere lust for power, but the biggest question still remained unsolved.
“I understand your sincerity well, Chairman. But why on earth are you trying to adopt me of all people?
At my question, his expression turned soft, and he looked at me with benevolent eyes.
“Because His Royal Highness the Crown Prince holds Lady Diel in his heart.”
“What? What do you mean by…”
Listening to his words made my mind dizzy, and a forgotten headache rushed in, making my head throb.
I really wanted to ask William about Chairman Reichen’s mental state.
‘Director, this man is a bit strange.’
“You are saying strange things. How does the Chairman know a heart that even the person concerned does not know?”
He was making a huge misconception. The Crown Prince just liked to tease me and play jokes on me. It was at the level of a mischievous boy playing pranks on a girl he was interested in.
A relaxed smile surfaced on the corners of his lips.
“I have served His Highness since he was an infant. I pride myself on knowing His Highness’s heart better than my own child’s. If His Highness chooses you, there will surely be those who make an issue out of your status. Therefore, if you become an adopted daughter of our family, wouldn’t we be able to block out the noisy disturbances?”
Only then did I understand Chairman Reichen’s inner thoughts.
This loyal old courtier was guessing the Crown Prince’s heart ahead of time to prepare in advance. He was trying to help so that the Crown Prince could spend his life together with the person he loved.
Upon learning the Chairman’s true sincerity, my anxiety disappeared and my mind was relieved, bringing a smile.
“His Highness is blessed with people. Since he has a loyal subject like the Chairman, he won’t go down the wrong path.”
In the original work, Ludwig was a corrupt crown prince who committed misdeeds and pursued only greed. I didn’t know why he had now become a cheerful comedic character completely different from the original.
What was certain was that as long as there were loyal subjects like Callix, William, and Chairman Reichen, the kingdom would not fall easily even if Grand Heir Franz launched a rebellion.
The Chairman looked into the air with a distant gaze as if recalling the past. He let out a faint sigh with a very exhausted expression.
“When His Highness was in his teens, he strayed into a wrong path, so I had some trouble setting him straight.”
It was obvious without even looking what the Crown Prince, who enjoyed his headstrong, independent life even now, was like in his teens.
The turbulent teenage Ludwig, just thinking about it made my spine chill.
I extended a word of deep consolation to the Chairman with sincerity.
“You must have gone through a lot of trouble all this time.”
“I regarded it as my destiny and duty. Fortunately, Grand Duke Reinhardt guarded the Crown Prince like iron, so he didn’t cause any major accidents.”
“Pardon? The Grand Duke guarded His Highness?”
When I raised my hand and asked, the Chairman expressed delight.
“Are you curious about His Highness’s youth by any chance? His Highness at that time was truly dazzling…”
I drew a firm line against him, who was about to blather on like a foolish parent bragging about his child.
“No. It’s fine. More than that, isn’t the Grand Duke younger than His Highness? How did he guard His Highness?”
Chairman Reichen touched his chin and fell into thought for a moment.
“Hmm, Duke Reinhardt became His Highness’s playmate at the age of 9 and became his exclusive knight at 13. He escorted His Highness until he was 18, when he went out to the battlefield, but.”
It was Callix’s tale of suffering that couldn’t be heard without tears. As expected, he was a character who suffered eternally.
He himself was in his teens when he would want to be free, but to think he cleaned up the accidents caused by the Crown Prince who was a few years older.
Now I seemed to understand the reason why he said the border was comfortable and going to the royal palace was uncomfortable.
I leaned my body close to the Chairman and lowered my voice as if discussing some sort of conspiracy.
“Be honest with me. Isn’t it because you don’t want to send your daughter to His Royal Highness the Crown Prince that you are trying to adopt me?”
‘This man isn’t new to this business. Even if you deceive heaven, you can’t deceive me.’
I must have hit the bullseye. He slinked his gaze away from mine and cleared his throat.
“Do not insult my loyalty, Lady Diel.”
I settled back into my seat, raising a satisfied smile on the corners of my lips.
‘As expected. You had that intention at least halfway.’
Returning to a serious expression, Chairman Reichen set out to persuade me.
“Anyway, think about it seriously. I will give you plenty of time.”
“Thank you for the favor, but I will decline.”
I refused his offer flatly.
“I do not want to become the crown princess. Because staying at the Royal Library is freer and happier than the Royal Palace. I will act as if I never heard that proposal.”
No matter which history of the East or West you looked at, there were not many cases where the life of a crown princess or queen was happy.
They enjoyed brilliant luxury, wealth, and power, but their endings were uniformly unhappy.
They became victims of political struggles or were betrayed by their aides and drank poison, or their families were massacred under false charges of treason.
If they were lucky, they were driven out to a detached palace to end their lonely lives.
The Chairman raised an eyebrow in amusement.
“The position of the Crown Princess is a place revered by all. Even though you could possess the crown everyone dreams of, you are satisfied with a mere librarian position?”
“Chairman, have you ever heard the saying that if you want to see the future, you must look at history?”
I offered a gentle smile.
“It might not compare to your level of knowledge, but as a librarian, I have read countless history books and realized something: the absolute truth is to live a thin and long life, being satisfied with small happiness. Power may be brilliant, but in the end, it is as fleeting as a wilting flower.”
A flash of surprise crossed Chairman Reichen’s eyes for a moment.
“A young lady is speaking like an elder who has lived for decades.”
Halting his words for a moment, a strong lingering regret was visible in Chairman Reichen’s expression.
“Even putting aside the matter of the Crown Princess, won’t you consider becoming an older sister to my daughter? My proposal to adopt you as my daughter was not simply because you receive the love of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince.”
He spoke in a somewhat dry tone, but the two eyes looking at me shone warmly.
Was even the powerhouse of Ruberia just a weak-hearted father when it came to his child’s problems?
I put on the most business-like smile possible.
“I am sorry, but I believe that will be impossible. Instead, when the young lady comes to the library, I will assist her with all my heart.”
Chairman Reichen looked at me with a regretful expression, but soon nodded his head and turned away.
His shoulders, which had been straight, looked as if they had lost some strength. It looked like the back of a powerless father, making a side of my heart feel stifled.
Intending to see the Chairman off, I decided to accompany him to the library’s entrance hall.
As I observed his profile, his face was engulfed in deep contemplation and agony.
As the Prime Minister of a country, was he agonizing because of the crown princess candidate issue?
No, let’s not pay attention. It is not an area for me to involve myself in.
There were crown princess candidates in the book club as well, but each was showing their own capability and attending classes diligently.
Even Eliade, whom I had worried would cause a disturbance, was quiet.
Choosing one of them was the role of Crown Prince Ludwig.
It had absolutely nothing to do with me. Just avoiding the fate of a villainous supporting character was overwhelming enough.
Amidst the heavy silence, we arrived in front of the grand entrance door of the library.
A guard bowed respectfully toward us and opened the door.
Awakening from his deep contemplation, the Chairman turned back to look at me.
“Lady Diel, thank you for listening to my unreasonable request. However, I hope you will know at least this.”
The Chairman opened his mouth in a serious tone.
“His Highness is still suffering from the pain of that day seven years ago and feeling a great sense of guilt.”
“……I know.”
I opened my mouth heavily.
The tragedy of seven years ago, which left deep scars and nightmares for Callix, remained as the exact same pain for Ludwig as well.
Because of that, even if the Crown Prince acted thoughtlessly, behaved like a playboy, or smiled slyly, I couldn’t bring myself to hate him.
Because behind that cheerful and bright face, I saw a lonely boy enduring pain.
The Chairman gazed intently into my eyes and continued his words.
“I believed that the person who could soothe his wounds and share her heart together with him should become the Crown Princess. That is why I made the proposal to the young lady. Because His Highness smiles most comfortably when he is with you.”
No wonder the Chairman’s gaze followed us tenaciously when I was talking with the Crown Prince at the House of Lords.
Had he been misunderstanding the relationship between His Highness and me since then?
“I understand well what you mean. I cannot become the companion of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, but I will remain by his side as a good subject and friend.”
I calmly revealed my true feelings.
Although there were many times I wanted to kick Ludwig in the back with my foot, he still felt like a brother I couldn’t hate.
“That alone is enough. I, Wilt Reichen, will gladly help Lady Diel upon the honor of my family.”
Chairman Reichen spoke in a grave voice like a knight making an oath.
Hearing those words, a good idea flashed across my mind like lightning.
“If I am dragged to the guillotine, will you gladly help me then as well?”
Chairman Reichen raised one eyebrow as if puzzled.
“To go to the guillotine, one would have to commit high treason. Lady Diel is not the kind of person to commit such an act, is she?”
“It’s just that I have a lot of caution. One cannot know what lies an inch ahead in human affairs, and I could be falsely accused of treason.”
Living while swamped with library work, I had temporarily forgotten my fate of possessing this body.
There was no way I would collude with the rebel forces, but at this point, I could not predict what kind of trick Franz would use to drag me in.
As the saying goes, one must buy multiple life insurance policies to have solid coverage and many benefits.
The immunity privilege of the Head Librarian.
The savior of the Reinhardt Grand Ducal Family.
Being the ward of Director William.
I had three solid insurance policies, but this alone was insufficient.
The Chairman looked flustered by the sudden demand, but soon regained his composure. He put strength in his chin and replied seriously.
“As long as Lady Diel’s heart remains on the side of the kingdom and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, I will help you until the end.”
“Your words alone are a great strength. Thank you, Chairman.”
Only then did I show him a smile full of trust for the first time.
As expected, the more dependable backings one had, the better.
The Marquis family’s majestic carriage arrived, and only after seeing the Chairman off as he rode away was I able to relax my tension.
“Oh, my aching bones. Why do only tiring things happen from early morning……”
Tapping my shoulders, which had hardened rigidly from tension, with my hand, I headed toward the door. At that moment, I collided with someone rushing in.
“Ouch!”
My body reeled for a moment, but the other person caught my arm so I didn’t fall over. Before checking the person’s face, a scent of flowers brushed the tip of my nose first.
“I-I am sorry. Are you alright?”
Lifting my head to look at the other person, it was Waynes, who was in charge of bookbinding and repair.
Having just shed his boyishness, he had transformed into a well-proportioned young man before I knew it. Though the freckles on the bridge of his nose remained, so his simple and kind impression was the same as always.
Waynes was flustered to the point that even his ears turned red, not knowing what to do.
“Librarian, are you alright? I’m sorry. I didn’t see you because I was going in a hurry.”
I straightened my posture and smiled.
“I am fine. But where are you coming back from?”
“Ah? Ah, yes. From visiting a secondhand bookstore for a moment… There was a book helpful for my work, so that’s…”
I narrowed my eyes and observed Waynes, who was standing awkwardly.
‘Hmm, he went to a secondhand bookstore?’
His tunic shirt was unbuttoned enough to show his collarbone, and red hickey marks were vivid on his neck. His clothing was also in a disheveled state.
His eyes were somehow feverish and dreamy, and his thin cheeks were flushed. Above all, a lily scent that didn’t suit a young man.
‘You can fool a ghost, but you can’t fool my eyes. Hehe.’
Is a secondhand bookstore the hot dating spot for lovers these days?
Only then did I remember the nameless woman he said he adored.
When was it that he said he adored a noble and beautiful young lady. To think they had already developed into a relationship where they shared their hearts.
‘As expected, young kids these days have good capability. Already confirming their feelings and progressing fast with their intimacy. Ah, it’s a good time of life. Loving intensely and passionately while young. My heart has already grown old, so everything is just bothersome.’
“I envy youth. Heh.”
“Pardon? W-What do you mean?”
Toward him, who didn’t know the reason, I made a gesture with my hand to straighten his clothes.
“Because attire must be decorous in the library.”
“Ah, I-I am sorry. It’s because I am clumsy…”
Waynes, whose face turned red, hurriedly buttoned his shirt and straightened his disheveled attire.
“Go on in quickly. And finish the book cover I requested by tomorrow.”
“Yes, understood.”
Waynes, who answered energetically, stopped his steps just as he was about to open the door and go in. He carefully read my countenance as if he had something to say.
“Um, Librarian. Around when will it be possible to borrow a magic book?”
Since the incident where <Lion’s Introductory Grimoire> was stolen, loans related to magic books had become strict.
Perusal was possible within a designated space inside the building under the presence of a librarian, and loans were prohibited. Naturally, the complaints from mages and scholars were high, but it was an essential measure to prevent the theft of magic books.
“Is there a magic book you want to read? If it’s for work, you can borrow it.”
If it were Waynes, he would need a magic book as reference material for binding.
He took on an excited expression like a young child.
“Really? What a relief. A friend of mine said there is a magic book they absolutely want to read.”
“Outsiders are prohibited from borrowing outside the building. If you bring your friend over, they can look at the magic book in my office.”
“Ah, it has to be done to that extent. The rules are strict.”
Waynes’s face changed to a rapidly disappointed one, and he slumped his shoulders.
“In any case, thank you for your consideration, Librarian. I will be going now.”
He bowed his waist to greet me and turned around. Carried by the blowing wind, the lily scent wafted over once again. It was a too familiar scent. An elegant and subtle lily flower scent.
‘Where did I smell it?’
The memory didn’t come easily.
***
Intent on heading to my office, I shifted my steps but then changed my mind.
“Shall I drop by the book club classroom for the first time in a while?”
By now, it should be recess after the first lecture had ended. Thinking I might chat with the students, I headed toward the annex building.
To avoid causing a disruption, I slightly cracked open the classroom door. However, the atmosphere beyond the door was unusual.
A young lady of fragile build with blonde hair was trembling faintly and weeping, while other students wrapped their arms around her shoulders to comfort her. It was Lady Melanie Barrett.
Standing opposite her was Eliade, holding a fan unfurled to half-cover her face, looking haughty. Her beautiful face visible past the fan looked down on the other students as if they were insignificant.
“I have no idea what you’ve been trying to say for a while now, Lady Barrett. Why don’t you stop crying like a child and speak slowly?”
Melanie could not speak properly as she struggled to hold back her heightened emotions and bursting tears. Another young lady, seemingly unable to endure it any longer, stepped forward.
“Lady Schpern, how can you speak like that? Do you truly not know what you have done to Lady Barrett?”
Eliade snapped her face-concealing fan shut. An expression of looking at the other person as pathetic along with annoyance was revealed.
“So, are you saying I should offer an apology right now?”
Eliade looked down on Melanie with a pathetic gaze. Watching that sight, it was difficult to contain the surging anger. Strength naturally entered my hands.
‘Eliade, I don’t care where you run amok, but how dare you do this to my precious students? There is a limit to a person’s patience.’
Just as I was about to kick the door open and dash into the classroom, someone firmly pulled my arm back. Turning around, Reina quietly shook her head.
“Why are you stopping me? I need to go in there and confront Lady Schpern.”
Reina’s calm brown eyes quietly directed toward me.
“As a librarian of the Royal Library, Lady Erika must maintain neutrality. Observe the situation and then decide on intervening. Entering right now will do nothing but pour oil on a fire.”
Not a single word of Reina’s was wrong. My current state was boiling and twisting inside with surging anger toward Eliade.
Clenching my fists, I forced myself to control my breathing. After regaining my composure, I threw a question to Reina to assess the situation.
“Could you explain what happened? What on earth occurred between Lady Barrett and Lady Schpern?”
The story Reina told was astonishingly shocking.
Melanie Barrett, the only daughter of the Baron Barrett family. She had committed a small mistake during her debutante ball at the age of nineteen. She had stepped on a fan that someone had dropped. The problem was that the owner of that fan was Eliade of the Ducal House of Schpern.
An absolute tyrant by nature, Eliade did not let slide a mistake that could have been passed over with a laugh. Simply because she was displeased, she threw the fan directly at Melanie’s face, pretending her hand had slipped.
Having suffered the humiliation of being struck in the face with a fan at her very first debut stage, she fled without even being able to dance. After the wound on her face healed, she returned to high society, but high society—which Eliade held sway over—was cold and indifferent to Melanie.
Melanie could not receive a single invitation to numerous high society gatherings, and even at the tea parties she barely managed to attend, she had to return after drinking tea all by herself. Having received a great wound to her heart, she was said to have cut off her attendance to high society and stayed cooped up inside the Baron’s manor.
“Ha, I truly cannot believe Lady Schpern’s cruel personality!”
‘Eliade, you couldn’t fix that wicked habit and ended up causing trouble after all. To make a person’s life a mess like this, I really want to give her a proper education this time, even if I have to twist her wrist.’
I wanted to leap in right away, but it seemed best to observe the situation first before intervening. Bracing my anger, I kept my eyes on the situation inside the classroom.
Melanie, who had been trembling like an aspen leaf, staggered to her feet. She glared at Eliade with red eyes.
“When I first met you here… I was scared and miserable. The very fact that I was in the same space as you was horrific. Every time I saw you, that cruel expression of yours when you threw the fan at me… came to mind.”
Tears streamed down unceasingly from Melanie’s large eyes.
“Why did you do such a thing? Did I do something so wrong? Because of you, I ruined my debutante and was even jilted from my engagement. Simply because I was marked by the Schpern family…”
Though her fragile body was on the verge of collapsing, she was forcing herself to hold out with resentment.
Despite Melanie’s difficult and desperate questioning, Eliade did not even bat an eye. Looking down coldly, she spoke in a dry, emotionless voice.
“To think you still remember something from God knows when, that’s amazing. Anyway, I’m sorry about that. Are you satisfied now?”
Eliade’s shameless apology instead brought a shock to Melanie. She collapsed without even being able to scream.
“Wait a moment, Lady Schpern. What kind of apology is that?”
The other students pressed, flaring up with anger.
“W-Wait, Lady Erika!”
The moment I heard Eliade’s uneducated apology, the thread of my remaining reason snapped. Reina hurriedly tried to stop me, but I had already stepped inside the classroom.
“Oh, Head Librarian Erika?”
“You’ve come at a perfect time. Please listen to our story.”
Discovering me, the students wore expressions of welcoming relief.
Melanie sat with her head lowered, her shoulders trembling faintly. Eliade’s icy gaze flew toward me like an arrow. It was a look that seemed to ask what someone like me could possibly do by coming here.
By my temperament, I wanted to grab Eliade by the hair first, but I knew that nothing would be resolved through violence.
Suppressing the surging rage, I glared at Eliade’s haughty face.
A massive power within me writhed as if it were hot lava, giving the sensation that it was about to burst out through my eyes. In that instant, a yellow light sparked in my eyes.
As if I had become a rampaging monster that had lost its reason. I felt the swirling anger and hatred within myself. I could not understand why, of all moments, I felt as though I had turned into one of them right now. However, if I were to reflect my face in a mirror, it felt as though my gaze would resemble that of a monster.
The only person who saw that look in my eyes was Eliade. A flash of terror and shock rapidly crossed her expression. With a deathly pale face, her lips trembled finely.
“Just what are you…?”
This was not the time to care about Eliade’s reaction. Barely calming my rage, I walked over to Melanie and gently wrapped my arm around her shoulders.
“Lady Barrett, could we speak for a moment?”
She looked at me with red eyes, raw from crying so much. Feeling incredibly sorry for her, I carefully wiped away her tears with my sleeve.
Freesia and Reina approached Lady Barrett, supporting her as they walked out of the classroom.
I turned my head and gave Eliade a terrifying glare. Her shoulders flinched instinctively.
“Lady Schpern, wait here for a moment. You and I need to have a conversation.”
Stepping outside, Melanie was sitting on a couch in the hallway, catching her ragged breath.
“I will fetch some water to drink.”
Reina hurriedly headed toward the dining hall, while Freesia stroked Melanie’s back to comfort her.
“Lady Barrett, calm down. Take a slow breath out.”
Whether she noticed my presence, Melanie abruptly lifted her face. She clung to my arm like a drowning person.
“Are you also going to tell me to just forgive Lady Schpern, Lady Erika? Must I accept that dreadful apology under the pressure of the Schpern family’s power? That wasn’t an apology. It was mocking and insulting me…”
She shook her head, weeping sorrowfully. I quietly waited for her sorrow and grief to subside. Stroking her shoulder, I spoke.
“Lady Barrett, you have the right not to forgive.”
At my calm voice, Melanie lifted her face, which was distorted in agony.
“Pardon?”
“When your heart is still in pain, how can you forgive? That would be fake forgiveness. Therefore, I want you to take courage and not forgive Lady Schpern.”
“What does that mean…?”
Melanie murmured as if she couldn’t understand. I gently held her hand.
“So that the anger and grief inside your heart can be resolved, go and state confidently: I will absolutely never forgive you.”
“Is it really alright to do that? She is of the Schpern family…”
The voice of the frightened Melanie was pitiful. I shook my head firmly. I wanted to eliminate all the fear and dread inside her heart.
“Lady Barrett, this is the Royal Library. No power holds sway here. The book club will become your fence.”
The trembling of her hand gradually subsided. Her gaze stared blankly down at the back of my hand.
“Librarian… Your hands are rough.”
She was right. My hands were rough, with minor wounds and calluses, so they didn’t look like the hands of a noble young lady.
“Because I practice archery and organize the bookshelves every day.” “How can you live so diligently?”
Melanie’s tear-rimmed eyes wavered disorientedly.
“I heard you were kicked out of the Viscount’s manor. How did you overcome it? I am not brave like you, Librarian.”
I wiped away the tears flowing down Melanie’s cheek with my hand.
“I am the same. I was terrified and scared. Overnight, I was stripped of my status, honor, and even my mansion. In the worst situation, I gathered courage and ran away.”
“Ran away?”
Her eyes grew as round as a startled rabbit’s. I smiled gently.
“I ran barefoot all the way to the library. Thanks to the Director’s consideration, I became a librarian. I haven’t forgiven my cousin yet. I plan to make them pay the price without fail. To do that, I must build strength while waiting for the right time.”
“But I don’t know what I should do.”
Melanie murmured with a vacant expression. I wanted to transmit even a bit of my strength to her, who was confused and distressed.
“Well, the method to become strong is different for everyone, but for me, I ate well every day, slept well, learned everything diligently, thought positively, and moved my body to build physical strength.”
“If I do that, will I be able to become strong too? Then, will this disgrace disappear?”
Melanie wore an expression of complete incomprehension. I quietly cupped Melanie’s cheeks with both hands. Carefully turning her face toward me, I locked eyes with her.
“That strength is the power to grow oneself. What Melanie needs right now is to believe in yourself.”
Her eyes, which had been blurred and mixed with fear and confusion, gradually regained their focus.
Melanie gave a difficult nod. Her small lips were bitten tightly. Her bloodshot eyes, where the tears had stopped, were faintly sparkling.
“I understand what you mean. This is not the time to cry.”
Melanie stood up from her seat without anyone’s help. Calming her breath quietly, she entered the classroom with her fists tightly clenched.
Freesia approached and asked with a worried face.
“Wouldn’t it be better for Erika to take her side? It’s too hard for Lady Barrett to handle alone.”
“Taking her side right now might offer temporary comfort, but she would still remain a victim. I want Lady Barrett to become a confident winner.”
“If so…”
Freesia’s voice changed in an instant. It was not her usual clear and pure tone, but deep, dark, and murky.
“What about the perpetrator?”
“Pardon?”
“Must the perpetrator be left alone? One must repay exactly what was received. An eye for an eye, blood for blood.”
A strange, unfamiliar look in her eyes that I was seeing for the first time. Her radiant and gentle purple eyes were dyed into a bloody red hue in an instant. A deep-seated rage whirled like the eye of a typhoon.
As if possessed by that gaze, I lost my mind and fell into it.
Freesia slowly stepped closer to me. Her swaying platinum blonde hair tickled the back of my hand, and her lips drew close to my ear.
And then, a familiar and sweet scent rushed in intensely.
The potent fragrance ensnared me like a spider’s web. The flower Freesia liked. The scent that always drifted subtly from her. It was the scent of lilies. As if swept away by the intense fragrance, my mind grew hazy.
Just then, Eliade’s arrogant voice awakened my muddled mind.
“Lady Barrett, you know my patience is thin. Since this place is a book club established by the will of Her Majesty the Queen, I will end it here. I apologized for what happened back then, so do not bring it up any further.”
Eliade spoke with a tired and bothered expression. Melanie, standing before her, shook her head vehemently.
“No. That cannot be called an apology, Lady Schpern.”
“Do you dare speak to me like that?”
Eliade’s eyebrows twitched for an instant.
Though the rims of Melanie’s eyes were red and bloodshot, she did not shed any more tears.
“You insulted me and my family. I will never forgive you.”
Eliade twisted the corners of her lips and scoffed.
“Just what do you want me to do then?”
Melanie proudly lifted her head. Her fragile shoulders no longer trembled. Her face was stained with tears, but her expression was fearless.
“I will build my strength. To the point where you will fear me. Remember that I can reveal your sins at any time. And I will make you truly apologize to me, without fail.”
Melanie glared at Eliade with eyes containing a powerful will. Eliade looked a bit flustered, but soon glared back shamelessly.
“I look forward to seeing if you can behave this rudely when you meet me at the royal palace ball, Lady Barrett.”
I could no longer watch Eliade’s behavior. I walked over to Melanie, patted her shoulder, and sent her a look of support. Then I stepped in front of Eliade.
Her displeased gaze pierced sharply into me.
“Do you have something to say to me, Librarian Erika?”
Eliade spoke sarcastically. Maintaining a calm demeanor, I opened my mouth.
“The ideology of our book club is for everyone to learn and understand together, supporting each other’s dreams.”
I looked around at the students nearby. They nodded their heads as if responding to my words.
“However, Lady Schpern has not truly apologized for the wrong committed against Lady Barrett.”
“Didn’t you hear either? I clearly just apologized.”
Eliade spoke coldly, cutting off my words. I quietly shook my head.
“The judgment regarding forgiveness is made by Lady Barrett. Your apology instead caused her pain.”
Eliade glared at me with fierce eyes. I spoke firmly with a solemn attitude.
“Since you have caused a public disturbance, I cannot accept you as a member of the book club. Please withdraw.”
At my words, Eliade’s face turned red and blue by turns. She glared with eyes sharp as an axe, as if to strike me down. Biting her molars, she clutched the skirt of her dress.
“So that’s how you’re going to play it…”
Eliade stepped closer to me and whispered.
“Don’t act cocky in front of me, Erika. Because you’ll regret it. If it weren’t for my older brother’s order, I wouldn’t have wasted my time with vulgar things like this.”
Everyone wore puzzled expressions, not knowing what Eliade had said, but I heard it clearly. Stepping away from me again, she tilted her chin rigidly like a queen.
“It’s exactly what I wanted. Staying together in this place feels like it would lower my dignity as well.”
Eliade walked out with a haughty attitude, without showing the slightest hint of remorse.
“How can she remain so shameless until the very end?”
Another young lady spoke, shuddering with disgust. Once Eliade vanished, Melanie collapsed weakly as if her tension had broken. The other ladies rushed to her side to support her.
“Oh dear! Lady Barrett, are you alright?”
Hurrying over to check Melanie’s complexion, her face was pale and her lips had turned blue. Perhaps because she had wailed while her emotions were heightened, her body was slumped limply without any strength. Wiping the sweat forming on her forehead with a handkerchief, I requested help from those around us.
“First, we must move Lady Barrett to Madam Marian’s office. Could you help me?”
“Wait a moment, Librarian Erika.”
Reina gently grabbed my wrist. Her considerate gaze inspected me.
“Your complexion doesn’t look good either, Librarian. Leave Lady Barrett to us and rest for a bit. Once the young lady regains her stability, we will call a carriage to send her home.”
“No, I’m fine. I can do it.”
While I was supporting Melanie, Freesia entered the classroom in a hurry along with Rose. Seeing Melanie held in my arms, Rose rushed over in surprise.
“What on earth happened? Why has Lady Barrett collapsed, and Lady Schpern left without even saying goodbye?”
“I have removed Lady Schpern from the book club. Because I could no longer watch her cause disturbances, I used my authority.”
I briefly explained the situation that had just unfolded to Rose. I added the atrocity Eliade committed, the story of Melanie who suffered because of it, and my judgment that it would be difficult to remain with Eliade when she causes strife in the book club.
“I see. I figured Lady Schpern would cause a major incident someday, but it happened sooner than I thought.”
A slight smile surfaced on Rose’s lips, as if she had expected it.
Reina let out a faint sigh with a complicated expression.
“Wasn’t that a hasty judgment? The Ducal House of Schpern will not sit idly by.”
“That’s right. I’m already worried about what they might do to you, Librarian.”
“Lady Schpern’s wickedness is enough to make one shudder.”
The other ladies also poured out their worries with anxious faces. I offered a calm smile.
“It is a decision made for everyone. I will take responsibility for the aftermath, so do not worry.”
“I also have no objection to the Head Librarian’s decision.”
Rose spoke, helping me support Melanie.
“Let’s discuss countermeasures later and first take Lady Barrett to Madam Marian. I will call a doctor as well.”
Reina helped Rose take Melanie out of the classroom. Remaining in the classroom, I calmly explained the situation to the other students.
“Don’t worry too much about today’s matter. First, we will end the class here. I will have carriages prepared, so everyone please return home safely.”
The students looked at me with eyes filled with anxiety and worry. After greeting them calmly, I turned around. Just then, a fragile hand firmly caught my arm. It was Freesia.
“Erika should rest for a bit. I will call the carriage.”
“I cannot impose on Freesia.”
Freesia’s eyes were trembling finely with worry and anxiety. Was the blood-red rage that had surged in her eyes just a moment ago something I had misseen?
“Am I… unable to be of help to you?”
She requested in a whisper with a fragile voice. A dense scent of lilies drifted around, enveloping me. The dizzyingly sweet fragrance loosened my taut tension. Unable to bring myself to refuse, I ended up nodding my head.

I turned my heavy steps back toward the office. Extreme fatigue weighed heavily upon my shoulders.
I needed to take a brief rest and draft the incident report. Since I had expelled Eliade through a unilateral decision, I would have to bear the corresponding responsibility.
Upon arriving at the third-floor office, a strange foreboding suddenly washed over me.
It swept through my body like a chilly late-autumn wind. Driven by the peculiar sensation coursing through me, I quickened my pace toward the fourth floor.
Lately, my senses had been growing increasingly acute. It felt as though, moving beyond simple five senses, an animalistic intuition was sharpening to a razor edge.
The ominous aura grew increasingly dense, and it was only when I reached the steps of the fourth floor that I recognized its true nature.
The fourth floor was completely sealed off by special magic. The stairs were there, but the space beyond was blocked by a solid wall.
At the top of the stairs, someone was standing with their back to me. It was a man of slender build. Wearing a silk top hat and a purple frock coat with ornate patterns, he was brushing his hand against the wall.
“What do you think you are doing there right now? Step away immediately.”
At my sharp, warning shout, the figure slowly turned his head.
The silver hair covering his forehead swayed gently. Intense purple eyes contrasted against his pale face. A young man beautiful enough to look as though he had been drawn.
It was Grand Heir Franz Schpern.
Upon discovering me, his purple eyes curved into crescents, forming a tender expression.
If I hadn’t known who he was, it was a face beautiful enough to captivate, but to me, it was merely bone-chilling.
“It’s been a while, Erika. Have you been well?”
“I was doing well until I encountered you, Grand Prince. This area is off-limits to the general public. Please step down.”
I replied stiffly in a business-like voice. Franz gently stroked the wall.
“The magic archive must be beyond this wall. It’s a pity I cannot see it firsthand. I was reflecting on the meaning of the words inscribed upon the door.”
……Impossible. Is he saying he can actually see the wall created by magic?
Does that mean Franz possesses mana?
Noticing my momentarily flustered expression, Franz let out a chuckle.
“I don’t have anything like mana. I simply heard about the archive from someone.”
Narrowing his eyes, he looked down at me with amusement.
“You look much cuter when your face is startled like a rabbit’s. You’re always scowling whenever you see me.”
“I am not startled. Stop teasing people. It is unpleasant.”
Strength naturally entered my clenched hands.
‘That fox is playing with me. I need to keep my wits about him. If I let my guard down, I’ll be manipulated by his deceptive silver tongue.’
“You must know the phrase inscribed upon the door of the magic archive. ‘A book is a door that enters into a new world.’ Truly a wonderful sentiment.”
Franz sang out in a murmur as he slowly descended the stairs.
Stopping directly in front of me, he regarded me with a tenacious gaze. A look that seemed to probe my inner thoughts.
“Don’t you want to see what that new world looks like, Erika?”
“If you wish to engage in small talk, please go to a salon. This is a library where silence is required.”
Before he could even reply, I turned my body and walked down.
Behind my back, the leisurely sound of Franz’s boot heels echoed. He followed me all the way to the front of my office.
I grabbed the doorknob to go inside, but unable to endure it any longer, I turned to question him.
“Why on earth are you following me?”
“Are you going to keep a guest standing in front of the door indefinitely?”
“A guest? I do not recall inviting the Grand Heir.”
Leaning his arm against the door, Franz looked down at me leisurely. The corners of his lips curved up seductively.
“It makes no difference to me where we are, though.”
An oath was on the verge of bursting from between my teeth. Biting my molars tightly, I threw the door open roughly.
“Please. Step. Inside.”
Franz toured the office with a relaxed stride. He admired the furniture and the framed pictures hanging on the wall with the leisure of someone visiting a gallery.
“Hmm, this interior decor doesn’t quite suit you.”
“Why don’t you just hurry up and sit down.”
“With pleasure.”
Franz nodded with a slick demeanor. Subsequently, he crossed his legs elegantly like he owned the place and sat on the sofa.
In an instant, my office transformed into the reception room of a ducal manor, and I felt like a maid awaiting orders.
“Is there no tea service for a guest?”
“You pi… Haah. Very well.”
Harsh words almost slipped out.
Though annoyance surged within me, I prepared some tea haphazardly and set it down before Franz, practically throwing it.
Clink.
A sharp sound echoed from the table as if the teacup might shatter.
“Since Lady Schpern’s guardian has arrived, this actually turns out well.”
At my sarcastic voice, Franz, who was lifting his teacup, raised an eyebrow.
Proving they were indeed siblings, even his minor gestures resembled hers, which only made me feel more displeased.
“Lady Eliade caused a disturbance in the book club, so I have removed her as a member.”
At my explanation, Franz froze with his teacup mid-air.
