- Chapter 8 - Please Be Quiet in the Library
“She resembles my mother a lot. I mean, the aura she gives off.”
A faint longing and the sorrow of looking back on memories were reflected in her eyes.
I recalled the explanation from the original work that Freesia’s mother had also died seven years ago during the monster attack at the royal palace. It was a banquet attended only by a small number of high-ranking nobles, and it was said that Countess Rubel met her end there as well.
“Is that so? It is an undeserved honor to be told I resemble your lady mother.”
I gave a formal reply, but Freesia did not take her eyes off me until the very end.
As she handed me the salt shaker, she leaned her body in excessively close.
Then, she whispered softly into my ear. Her voice was as fragile as the fluttering of a fairy’s wings, as if it might vanish at any moment.
“You have no idea how happy I am whenever I discover glimpses of my mother in you, Erika.”
People who have experienced too much sorrow and pain often become strangely calm. She looked as precarious as a sandcastle on the verge of collapsing.
What should I say to Freesia, who was smiling like a withered flower?
Not knowing how to comfort someone who had lost a beloved family member, I quietly took her slender hand under the table.
Freesia’s violet eyes trembled slightly as if she were surprised. She looked down at my hand for a moment, then curved her eyes happily.
“I want to get along with you like sisters from now on. Will you be my friend?”
“Pardon? The honor is all mine, but…”
I answered before I knew it.
What just happened? I stared blankly at her face, which was as beautiful as a flower washed by morning dew, as if I were possessed.
Why is the female lead asking me, a supporting character, to be her friend? I felt a growing certainty that things would get complicated if I became friends with the female lead on top of the male lead.
Just then, Calix, who had been eating in silence, set down his knife.
“Lady Rubel. Just so you know, I am also in a ‘close’ friendship with Librarian Erika.”
I glared at Calix, who seemed to lack even a shred of basic social tact.
Why on earth is that man saying such useless things at such an important meeting? Please, just focus on the female lead!
The bombshell dropped by Calix caused confusion and a stir at the quiet table.
The Crown Prince clapped his hands, looking genuinely surprised, and Freesia looked at me with eyes full of respect.
“Truly surprising. I see you in a new light, knowing you were friends with Duke Calix.”
“Oh my. To be the Duke’s friend—that is amazing, Lady Erika.”
Before I could stop him, Calix’s elegant lips moved again. I hurriedly stepped in to extinguish the fire before he could say anything else strange.
“It is thanks to my precious connection with Lord Michael that I was fortunately able to become acquainted with the Duke.”
The moment I heard Calix mention ‘friendship,’ a cold sweat broke out on my back.
But crisis is often an opportunity. A brilliant idea flashed through my mind. I’ll use this situation to my advantage.
I stood up and raised my glass high.
“Today is such a joyful day. I have always admired Lady Rubel and wished to be her friend, so I am grateful that she asked first.”
I paused for a moment and offered Freesia a smile. She responded with a smile of her own.
“Since Lady Freesia has become my friend, the Duke is also the Lady’s friend. Why don’t we celebrate the two of you becoming friends here as well?”
A startled Freesia cautiously checked Calix’s expression. Soon, her pale cheeks flushed pink.
Ludwig stroked his chin, wearing a satisfied smile.
Only Calix frowned, staring intensely at me. Doubt swirled in his blue eyes.
I decided to ignore him; his mood didn’t matter.
The Crown Prince, seemingly in a good mood, laughed cheerfully and raised his glass.
“If she is the Duke’s friend, she is my friend as well. To the eternal friendship of the four of us here today!”
The four glasses clinked in the air, creating a clear, ringing sound.
The Crown Prince was as giddy as someone with a flower in their hair. Freesia was shyly stealing glances at Calix. Calix was glaring at me with burning eyes. And I just stared at the magnificent chandelier on the ceiling.
I played along and matched the atmosphere, but I had a gut feeling that this date plan was a failure.
My own love life in reality was always a mess; did I really think I could be a dating coach just because I was reincarnated? I have enough problems of my own.
After the toast to friendship, the atmosphere of the lunch banquet became warm.
Silver knives and tableware clinked brightly, and wine glasses were passed around incessantly. Pleasant laughter broke out from time to time during the conversation.
I sipped the deep-scented wine and stole a glance at Calix.
He still hadn’t touched his wine. He only gestured as if drinking, but the glass remained full. Was he abstaining because of his duty to guard the Crown Prince?
Noticing my gaze, he offered his glass with an elegant smile.
“Would you like to toast with me, Erika?”
“You said you don’t drink while on duty.”
He checked my empty glass and poured wine for me himself.
His large, elegant fingers gripped the wine bottle softly, as if embracing a woman’s waist. The motion of carefully and slowly pouring the red liquid into the glass was captivating.
It was only when the sweet, rich scent of the wine spread that I snapped out of it and straightened my posture.
“You should be careful not to make a mistake on duty because you’re drunk.”
“I’m fine. I’m not drunk at all.”
My face flushed, perhaps because of his voice reaching my ears or perhaps because of a late-onset tipsiness.
Lunch ended, and dessert was served. As sweet cakes, apple pies, and chocolates appeared on the table, a different kind of energy filled the room.
While sipping tea, Ludwig suddenly seemed to remember something and looked at Freesia.
“Lady Rubel, how is your father, Count Rubel, doing these days?” “Yes. Thanks to Your Highness’ consideration, he is doing well without any trouble.”
Freesia responded with an elegant smile. For a split second, bitterness, faint pain, and darkness swirled within her violet eyes like a storm in a teacup before vanishing.
It was a formal greeting, but a strange tension flowed through the air.
The Crown Prince, who had been leading the atmosphere with a cheerful expression throughout the meal, stiffened for the first time. Even Calix’s hand, holding his teacup, paused for a fleeting moment.
It happened so quickly that I wondered if I had imagined it.
It was the Crown Prince who broke the heavy silence hanging over the table.
“I would like Lady Rubel to attend the palace ball held during the Harvest Festival. The event would shine even brighter if you were there. Surely any flower would bow its head before your beauty.”
Ludwig extended the invitation with a look of great expectation, but Freesia hesitated.
“I am honored by the invitation, but I worry I might cause trouble as I am unfamiliar with social etiquette.”
“Duke Calix is the same when it comes to being a man of few words. My knight prefers talking to enemies or monsters on the battlefield. Of course, the opponent is usually dead after the conversation.”
“Do not forget that it was because of my quiet personality that I saved Your Highness’s life countless times,” Calix replied calmly while drinking his tea.
“That is why I favor you all the more.”
The Crown Prince laughed cheerfully, raising his wine glass.
The conversation flowed smoothly after that. It progressed to the point where Freesia would occasionally ask Calix witty questions, and he would respond lightly.
The sight of the beautiful man and woman exchanging glances and talking was truly heartwarming.
I was drinking tea with a motherly smile when the Crown Prince approached me with the teapot.
“Librarian Erika, would you like another cup of black tea?”
“Oh, it’s an honor, Your Highness.”
The Crown Prince tilted the teapot with a graceful posture and poured the tea. He whispered to me while looking at Calix and Freesia.
“They truly are a well-matched pair. Don’t you think? Our Duke should be taking a wife soon, after all.”
Wait, the Crown Prince actually says the right thing sometimes. How unexpected.
In the original story, Calix falls in love with Freesia, overcomes trials and tribulations, and the story ends with their marriage.
Though things were slightly different from the original progression, they had met and were communicating, so only good things should follow, right?
Seeing the ripening atmosphere, it seemed like time for the matchmaker to exit. The problem was how to take the uninvited guest, the Crown Prince, with me.
Should I lie and say Director William is looking for him urgently?
I toyed with my teacup and glanced at the Crown Prince.
The look in the Crown Prince’s eyes as he watched Freesia was calmer and more detached than I expected.
Shouldn’t he be glaring with eyes full of jealousy and a love-hate obsession?
But as an omniscient reader who knows the original work, he can’t hide from me—the future wicked villain Crown Prince.
I watched him intensely, like a detective uncovering a criminal.
Naturally noticing my gaze, Ludwig gave me a smile as sweet as whipped cream.
“My, Librarian. Have you fallen for my charms as well?”
“Not at all. I was glaring at you.”
“Your gaze is far too heated for that. It’s the first time I’ve received such a provocative look. Though I often receive them from those trying to take my life.”
“You saw correctly. I had the same look in my eyes as them.”
Ludwig looked surprised, or perhaps as if he had goosebumps from being moved by my words.
“Could it be… you want me so much that you even want to monopolize my life?”
“Ah, that’s not it…”
Please, just shut your mouth! I suppressed the urge to scream with superhuman patience.
I can’t be executed for lèse-majesté before the main characters even fall in love, right?
“Your Highness, it is time to leave. It is time to return to the palace.”
A cold, chilly voice came from behind me.
Duke, why are you in a bad mood again? You were having such a nice, friendly conversation with Freesia.
“Duke Calix, why are you in such a hurry? I haven’t even finished my dessert.”
“You have been out of the palace for too long. There are security concerns, so let us return.”
“Ugh, I suppose that’s it for today.”
Ludwig looked genuinely disappointed, then turned his head toward Freesia.
“Thank you for the wonderful meal today, Lady Rubel.”
“It was a great joy for me to be with Your Highness as well.”
After exchanging warm goodbyes with Freesia, the Crown Prince left the restaurant first, accompanied by Calix.
I also approached Freesia and bowed my head.
“Lady Rubel, thank you for inviting me to the meal. It was a wonderful occasion.”
She gave me a gentle smile.
“I enjoyed being with you as well, Librarian. Let’s see each other often.”
***
When I stepped outside the restaurant, the Crown Prince’s carriage was waiting.
Ludwig poked his head out of the carriage window and gestured to me.
“Librarian Erika, get in our carriage. We’ll take you to the library.”
“Pardon? I appreciate the gesture, but I’ll walk.”
Inwardly, I was waving my hands in refusal, but outwardly, I declined politely. Then, Freesia stepped in.
“I will take Lady Erika in my carriage.”
At those words, the Crown Prince proposed a clear solution.
“Then how about our carriage escorts the ladies’ carriage to the library?”
***
Two luxurious carriages arrived in front of the Royal Library. I suppressed my anxious and nervous heart as I carefully watched the situation outside the carriage.
Freesia asked with a kind smile.
“Erika, what’s wrong? Are you uncomfortable somewhere?”
“No. The people—I mean, the weather is quite nice outside.”
“Isn’t it? It’s wonderful weather for a walk.”
Freesia and I looked at each other and smiled softly. Though my mouth was twitching from the forced smile. Social conversation is truly difficult to get used to.
I continued to keep a close eye on the situation outside. I wanted to enter the library as quietly and inconspicuously as possible. Because…
In the end, what I feared happened. People passing in front of the library stopped in their tracks and stared at the royal carriage. Several noblewomen were whispering to each other with expectant looks.
To make matters worse, young ladies were coming out of the library, fluttering their fans.
As Crown Prince Ludwig, Duke Calix, and Lady Rubel stepped out of the carriage together, exclamations, surprises, and sighs erupted from the young ladies everywhere.
Of course, I got out of the carriage last as quickly as possible and stepped back as if I weren’t part of the group. I absolutely refused to be part of the grand entrance of the main characters from the original work.
Standing a step away and looking at them objectively, the three of them were in perfect harmony, like a painting.
The arrogant but charming red-haired Crown Prince Ludwig. The cold, dark-haired handsome man Duke Calix. And the elegant, lily-like Freesia, smiling purely between the two men.
The Crown Prince spoke kindly to Freesia, and she smiled slightly, covering her mouth with her hand. Calix escorted the two of them, watching them with a blunt but soft gaze.
Seeing the three of them, I realized once again that I was a truly insignificant supporting character.
Freesia approached me to say goodbye.
“I hope I didn’t keep you too long and interfere with your work.”
“It’s fine. I enjoyed today, Lady Rubel.”
“Please call me Freesia. We decided to be friends, didn’t we?”
Freesia said with a laugh. Drawn in by her kind smile, I nodded.
After Freesia left, the Crown Prince finished his fan service by waving to the other ladies in front of the carriage. He even winked at me, acting friendly.
“Librarian Erika, good work today. See you tomorrow.”
“I’m planning to apply for a leave of absence tomorrow.”
Please, stop coming to the library. Let me rest. I didn’t become a librarian just to work myself to death!
Calix blocked the Crown Prince’s path and spoke in a dry voice.
“Starting tomorrow morning, you must attend the State Council meeting and military training. You will be busy with government affairs for a while.”
“W-wait, my knight. That is far too cruel a measure…”
“Let us go.”
Calix led the Crown Prince to the carriage with a polite but semi-forced motion.
That doesn’t look like an escort; it looks like a prisoner being transported.
After pushing the Crown Prince into the carriage, Calix came back to me.
He didn’t say anything, but my body stiffened under his delicate and soft gaze.
“I’ve been bothered by it for a while now…”
Uncharacteristically, he let his sentence trail off. What was he hesitating to say?
“The wrinkle between your eyebrows has deepened.”
“Pardon?”
“I hope you don’t overwork yourself. I’ll send some herbs that are good for the skin to the library, so make sure to use them. I’ll see you next time, Erika.”
What did I just hear?
I was so flabbergasted and dumbfounded that I just stood there blankly as Calix finished what he had to say and left in the carriage.
Anger flared up a beat late. Isn’t it incredibly rude to point out someone’s wrinkles like that?
I guess people really don’t change. That rude, ill-mannered male lead!
As I fumed at the disappearing carriage, Rose approached me excitedly, fluttering her fan.
“Lady Erika, was that rumor true? That the woman the Crown Prince loves is Lady Rubel?”
“Is that so? I had no idea.”
I answered half-heartedly. One way or another, Freesia is going to have a hard time too.
“The Crown Prince and Lady Rubel—my goodness. They are such a perfect match; I can’t help but be amazed.”
“Well, they do look good together.”
“Duke Calix also looked good with Lady Rubel. She must have saved a country in her past life. To be with the most handsome men in the kingdom, phew.”
Rose turned away with a sigh mixed with envy.
The other ladies who hadn’t left yet also wiped their tears with their handkerchiefs.
Was it because the combination of the three perfect people left them with no strength even for jealousy?
The playboy Crown Prince, the cold Northern Duke, and the angelically beautiful daughter of a Count. The combination of the three would surely be a hot topic in social circles for a while.
But why does my stomach keep churning? Did I eat that steak too fast earlier?
***
“Now it finally feels like a real library.”
I smiled as I savored the freshly brewed, fragrant black tea.
The quiet silence created by centuries-old books, the comforting scent of wood-like paper.
I was briefly lost in the emotion of the Royal Library finally regaining its long-standing atmosphere.
An afternoon tea party with Rose during the library’s quietest hour.
I was falling into happiness provided by crispy cookies and sweet chocolate when Rose, without even touching her tea, let out a deep sigh.
She stared at the library entrance with a longing gaze, like a tragic heroine.
“Do you think the Crown Prince won’t be coming anymore? Or the Duke…?”
“They said they’re busy participating in state affairs.”
Unlike Rose, who was disappointed, I was inwardly cheering as I enjoyed the leisurely tea time.
As Calix had mentioned, Crown Prince Ludwig’s visits had become infrequent after the lunch banquet. Consequently, Calix hadn’t visited either.
The love letters that used to pile up at the information desk every day decreased, and the ladies who used to wait in the aisles were nowhere to be seen.
The line of luxurious carriages that used to fill the front of the library every morning during the commute also vanished.
I hummed as I compiled a list of new books.
I’m finally getting through the work that piled up while I was attending to the Crown Prince.
Rose spoke pensively, like a singer longing for her past success and glory.
“It’s become a boring library again. It was as fun as being at a ball before.”
I nodded, recalling her dress collection that changed every day while the Crown Prince was visiting.
Rose had looked truly happy when she was blooming with laughter while chatting with the young ladies of noble families.
“I’ve been curious—why did you apply for a librarian position, Rose? You seem to like the lively social circles better than a quiet library.”
“My family home is in a provincial territory. It’s a tedious place with nothing but endless fields, farmland, and sheep pastures. The only time I could escape from home was to attend a ball in the capital or visit relatives.”
“Oh dear, that must have been very stifling.”
She shuddered as if she hated even the thought of her life in the provincial territory.
“The only way to leave the territory is through marriage. But after marriage, you’re burdened with the duties of the lady of the house. So, as a second-best option, I applied for a position as a librarian at the Royal Library. Somehow, I ended up with the heavy responsibility of lending magic books, though.”
I tilted my head, not quite understanding.
“Librarians just work in the library. Isn’t it more stagnant and stifling?”
Rose smiled brightly with a confident expression.
“You don’t know much, do you? The library is in the capital. And the capital is where social trends and fashions are led. I enjoy shopping trips on my days off.”
“I see. I don’t leave the library much, so…”
Rose leaned in with sparkling eyes.
“Would you like to go out together on the next closing day? I know a boutique run by a tailor from the Royal Palace.”
Hmm, if I go shopping with Rose, I feel like I’d have to spend the whole day on a pilgrimage of boutiques. Even in my past life, I rarely went shopping at department stores because it was too much of a chore.
“Maybe some other time when I have a chance. For now, I have to go to the restoration room to drop off a book cover for repair.”
After finishing my remaining tea in one gulp, I headed to the restoration room on the third floor.
I chuckled to myself, realizing I had become so accustomed to this “hamster wheel” life of commuting only between the library and my residence.
‘This is exactly the same as before my reincarnation.’
Back then, I also spent all my time shuttling between the library and my studio apartment.
I had tried dating once, but the emotional exhaustion was so taxing that I gave up on everything.
I quietly opened the door to the restoration room; the staff members were all deeply immersed in their respective tasks.
I walked past the desks and stopped in front of the cover repair station.
Under a desk lamp, a curly-haired boy named Waynes was carefully branding letters onto a leather cover with a soldering iron.
Mister MacBurrin, the former cover repairman, had been fired after frequent unexcused absences. Waynes, who was Mister MacBurrin’s apprentice, naturally became his successor.
At first, everyone was worried about entrusting the work to an eighteen-year-old boy, but now, the trend was to recognize Waynes for his sincerity and excellent repair skills.
“Ah, Librarian Erika! You’re here?”
Waynes scrambled to his feet and gave a quick bow. Perhaps he had hit a growth spurt, as he had grown nearly as tall as an adult.
His youthful face had changed quite a bit too; at a glance, he looked like a young man. Children really do grow up at a bittersweet pace.
Suddenly, Michael came to mind. My cute and lovely Michael will also turn into an adult someday.
‘Ha… just thinking about it brings tears to this big sister’s eyes.’
“Here is the book that needs repairing this time. I’m counting on you.”
Waynes examined the book from various angles with a keen eye.
“A lot of effort went into the binding and mounting of this book. The gold on the fore-edge, the head, and the tail is peeling off, and the leather is worn. I’ll disassemble the book, reattach the leaves, and cover it with sheepskin. I’ll also re-apply the gold leaf.”
The boy’s expression was full of life as he calmly explained the work plan.
His hands were covered in scars from needle pricks and calluses, but they were the hands of a proper craftsman.
“Book restoration is wonderful. It’s an important job that extends the life of a book.”
“In the old monasteries, there were monks called Ligators who were in charge of binding. They held the heavy responsibility of turning the Word of God into books. I’m working hard, dreaming of reaching the skill level of a Ligator myself.”
Waynes explained with sparkling eyes but soon lowered his head, seemingly embarrassed.
“Oh, I’m sorry, Librarian. I got excited and rambled on again. I did the same thing to that person…”
“That person?”
“Yes. A noble and beautiful lady who visits the library often. She saw my work and was curious, so I explained it to her. She listened quite seriously too.”
Waynes spoke dreamily, his face flushing red.
‘I see a ‘beautiful lady’ has captured the boy’s heart. Hehe.’
To think he’s already grown into a young man with a crush—it makes me want to cheer him on.
I suppressed a “motherly smile” and left the restoration room.
I entered the second-floor stacks to check on the new books. Only a quiet silence lingered there, devoid of visitors.
The soft sunlight filtering through the bookshelves tickled my back. I hummed as I checked the titles of the books lined up on the shelves.
“Librarian Erika.”
Just then, someone called me from behind. I stiffened in surprise.
“Would you find a book for me?”
A soft, sweet, yet languid voice. A voice belonging to someone I thought I would never have to hear again.
A sentence I once read flashed through my mind.
“Would you die for me? Erika.”
The voice flowing from lips wearing an enchanting smile was sweet. At the same time, his eyes looked as though he were staring at a worthless pebble.
Erika’s obsessive love and a nightmare that never ends. The traitor dreaming of the fall of the Kingdom of Ruberia.
It was Grand Heir Franz Schpern.
His violet eyes narrowed slightly, and a captivating smile formed on lips more beautiful than a woman’s. But I was the only one who knew that Franz’s beautiful smile was merely a mask.
A shock akin to terror spread through my body.
Strangely, the original Erika’s emotions felt so vivid that I felt pained, sad… and deeply longing.
I was fine at the restaurant. Why am I acting like this now?
‘Ah.’
Back then, Calix was by my side. Because he was there, I didn’t get swept away emotionally.
Franz’s eyes, asking me to find a book, were cold, in stark contrast to his upturned lips.
‘Should I just run away? Should I throw away my job as a librarian and hide in some rural estate where no one can find me?’
It was disorienting to feel Erika’s emotions, which I had only ever read about in a book. Even if the content of the original work was just a future that hadn’t arrived yet…
That made it even scarier. In other words, because it hadn’t happened yet, it could happen.
I was afraid that even if I took a job as a librarian to avoid the guillotine and fled from the rebel forces, it might all be in vain. I was terrified that I would eventually end up holding Franz’s hand.
“What’s wrong? You look pale.”
Franz asked softly, reaching out his hand.
His hands were snow-white, long, and slender. They were elegant and straight, like those of a pianist.
They were hands that had never been stained with blood. He never picked up a sword with his own hands. His subordinates became his weapons and killed innocent people.
He was a ruler who sat elegantly in the pools of blood shed by his victims, wearing a satisfied smile.
If Calix stepped into the light for the sake of the kingdom and its people, Franz moved secretly in the shadows only to satisfy his own desires and pleasures.
‘Why on earth did Erika fall in love with such a terrible human being?’
Avoiding his hand, I responded calmly.
“I am fine, Grand Heir. What kind of book are you looking for?”
“I’d like to read a continental history book. Which shelf has the history books?”
“This way, please.”
He used honorifics when Calix was around, but now that he’s gone, he’s dropped them immediately. His attitude has become arrogant too. Is he showing his true colors now?
I led the way, avoiding eye contact as much as possible. Even though he was just following behind me, the pressure of his presence made me feel suffocated and stifled.
Barely suppressing the urge to run away immediately, I stopped in front of the bookshelf where the history books were organized.
“You can look here. The books related to continental history start from the top shelf.”
I tried to leave quickly after saying my piece, but…
“Wait a moment. I have to find another book too.”
As expected, the Grand Heir did not let his prey go so easily.
I had no choice but to stand beside the bookshelf like a stone statue.
‘What kind of situation is this?’
His silver hair shimmered in the sunlight pouring through the library window. Beneath his long eyelashes, his violet eyes sparkled like jewels.
He was tall but thin, with delicate lines, giving him the aura of a mysterious, beautiful boy.
Franz frowned, seemingly bothered by the light.
‘Why am I remembering useless information like the fact that he has a sunlight allergy right now?’
I let out a sigh, but I took off my cape and held it high over my head. I was working hard to block the sunlight when Franz turned around.
He looked at me standing there awkwardly with the cloak raised, an incredulous expression on his face.
“What are you doing now?”
“Um, you seemed uncomfortable because of the sunlight.”
“I can’t read the book because it’s too dark. Put that down.”
“Ah, yes.”
I quickly put my clothes back on. Honestly, I was so embarrassed. It wasn’t like I did this because I wanted to. What could I do if my body moved instinctively?
As Franz pulled out a book, a cloud of dust rose. He gave a dry cough and glared at me.
“Do you even know the word ‘cleaning’? This is the worst.”
“I will pay more attention from now on.”
Franz took the book and sat at a reading table. Once he started reading, I felt no need to wait any longer.
“Grand Heir, I will take my leave then.”
Franz raised his hand while keeping his eyes on the book, his face expressionless.
“No. Stay here.”
‘This guy?’
My patience, which was thinner than a sheet of paper, snapped.
“I am not your maid, Grand Heir. I have found the book you wanted, so I will be going now.”
I turned around immediately after saying what I had to say.
‘I absolutely refuse to get involved with that man!’
“Stop right there.”
His arrogant command dropped behind me, but I pretended not to hear.
“I suppose you aren’t curious about the whereabouts of the missing magic book?”
My feet stopped on their own.
‘To openly say ‘I’m the one behind it’ like this. Does he have no intention of hiding it from me?’
I had completely forgotten. Franz’s specialty. He knew people’s desires and weaknesses well. And they became ferocious puppet strings that bound people.
The Erika of the original work was also one of his puppets.
Swallowing hard, I fought the urge to run away from him.
“If it’s about the magic book, I think you should discuss it with Director William. It’s not within my jurisdiction.” “Well. I don’t think you need to feign ignorance. You’re a Book Reader, aren’t you?”
‘That quick-witted white fox. He even knows top-secret information about me.’
After cursing him inwardly, I put on my professional smile.
“A Book Reader? That’s the first I’ve heard of it. I’m just an ordinary librarian. Please discuss the details with the Director.”
A cold sneer hung on the corner of Franz’s beautiful mouth.
“Your courage has been commendable for a while now. Daring to talk back so persistently in front of a high noble.”
‘He has a remarkable talent for making people angry.’
I am not the submissive “Erika.” I don’t tremble at a single word from you.
I walked slowly towards him. Defiance boiled up from deep within.
The Erika of the original work couldn’t even lift her head in front of Franz. She just loved him with all her heart and was cruelly unrequited.
I felt sorry for her, being foolish enough to give everything for something like love.
‘I’m sorry, but I will never be like that.’
I have to change the plan. Running away from Franz isn’t going to solve the problem.
There are only two ways for now.
Either I cut the puppet strings, or I twist the puppeteer’s wrist.
Franz sat in the chair with his legs crossed, watching me approach leisurely.
A slow sneer appeared on his beautiful pale face. It was the smile of a hunter confident that his prey would jump into the trap on its own.
I put strength into my trembling legs and straightened my instinctively hunched shoulders. My gaze looked down at him without wavering.
“I am a librarian of the Royal Library. I ask that you observe at least basic etiquette.”
Franz’s brow furrowed, perhaps because my actions were unexpected.
His eyes reflected me like amethysts. Soon, a thick greed rose to the surface.
“Interesting. You’re quite different from what the investigation showed…”
My meager sense of victory vanished as if washed away. Instinctive fear weighed down my shoulders. It was all I could do not to just collapse.
A persistent gaze that seemed to look into the very bottom of a person pierced through me. This was likely his true face.
A pressure that any human would find repulsive, something that couldn’t be explained rationally.
Furthermore, he said ‘what the investigation showed.’ I’m terrified of just how much that white fox knows about me.
“I… I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“It doesn’t matter… I can find out slowly from now on.”
His eyes glinting with a strange light, Franz grabbed my wrist firmly.
“First, I want that look in your eyes.”
“…Let go of my hand, Grand Heir!”
I tried to pull my hand away, but it was in vain. His strong grip tightened further and further. Where on earth does this kind of strength come from that white, slender wrist?
‘If he weren’t a Grand Heir, I would have smashed his head in with a thick book.’
I was recalling the old saying ‘three times of patience can even prevent a murder’ when suddenly something touched my hand.
When I blankly lowered my gaze, Franz was kissing the back of my hand.
When I looked at him in disbelief, he smiled, revealing his even teeth.
“I always get the prey I’ve marked, no matter what. Even if it belongs to someone else. I’ve never let one go so far.”
‘Prey?’
As my anger boiled up to its limit, I became extremely calm instead.
‘This situation is interesting.’
I approached him as he sat in the chair and pressed down firmly on his shoulder.
Without giving him a chance to refuse, I brought my face right up to his. Close enough to feel his breath, which had become ragged at my sudden approach.
Franz’s leisurely smile vanished at the bold contact.
“What are you doing?”
“Then, I suppose I’ll be the first.”
I slowly stroked the lace cravat wrapped around his long, elegant neck with my hand, then gripped it firmly.
“The prey the Grand Heir let go. Because I will never be caught.”
Whether it was because my words were unexpected, he opened his eyes wide and said nothing.
He looked like a defenseless beautiful boy. His eyes wavering under his beautiful silver hair and his pale pink lips slightly parted in confusion.
The pure white cravat caught in my hand felt like a leash, and a surge of pleasure washed over me. I felt like his master.
I felt a surge of impulse to make him kneel before me, like the Erika who wailed in the mud that she loved him.
I wanted to make him cry miserably, begging to just be allowed to love me.
My smile right now might be the same kind as Franz’s.
‘To smile while wanting to dominate someone else… I really look like a villainess.’
“Librarian Erika, where are you?”
Just then, I heard a voice urgently looking for me from the entrance of the stacks. It was Rose.
I straightened my posture and smoothed out the wrinkles in Franz’s cravat.
And I gave him a polite bow. As if nothing had happened, as if no such thing had ever occurred.
“Pardon me. I will be going now, as I have remaining work.”
His lingering gaze followed me, but I ignored it.
When I came out of the second-floor stacks, Rose was hurrying up, clutching the hem of her dress.
Upon finding me, she let out a frantic breath, a look of relief on her face.
“Ah, Lady Erika, here you are. I’ve been looking for you everywhere.” “Is something wrong?”
She looked down uneasily.
“We have to go down quickly. A troublesome problem has arisen among the young ladies.”
‘The young ‘ladies’ have flocked here again?’
I thought they had all naturally stopped coming since Crown Prince Ludwig hadn’t been visiting much lately.
“What kind of problem?”
“Well… Lady Rubel is in trouble.”
The moment Freesia’s name was mentioned, I ran down the stairs without a second thought.
In the deepest part of the stacks, I saw a group of young ladies in dresses.
In the middle of a wall of flashy, voluminous dresses, Freesia, wearing a simple ivory dress, caught my eye.
A young lady dressed in a striking red dress and adorned with glittering jewelry stood at the front, glaring at Freesia.
The lady pressed her with a sharp tone, and the other ladies chimed in, taking her side.
Freesia tried to force a smile, but her distress was evident.
I couldn’t hear exactly what they were saying, but it was clear the atmosphere was not good.
‘What is that? Are those people bullying Freesia? How dare they…?’
I quickly walked towards them.
“Wait a moment.”
Just then, Rose stopped me and lowered her voice to explain the situation.
“You should understand the situation before you go. It seems Lady Rubel has become a target.”
“Why?”
I asked, suppressing my rising anger.
“Apparently, there was a tea party held in the capital recently for the exchange of noble children. Lady Rubel attended, and the young lords fell in love at first sight and only showed interest in her. The lady in front was the host of that tea party. Lady Eliade of the Schpern House.”
Eliade of the Schpern House. She was the only younger sister of Grand Heir Franz. In the original work, she was famous as a villainess.
Relying on her family’s prestige and wealth, she reigned like the queen of social circles. Furthermore, she was the most likely candidate for Crown Princess.
The problem was that she, just like her brother, was different on the outside and the inside. Superficially, she pretended to be elegant and refined, but inwardly, she was greedy and cruel.
In the original work, that temperament was displayed in full force when she was jealous of Freesia.
Eliade watched from behind as the Crown Prince fell in love with Freesia, swallowing her resentment.
And she blamed Freesia for all her anger and resentment, bullying her until she finally plotted to poison her.
However, Calix stopped her evil deeds, and after Franz’s rebel forces were arrested, she was executed along with them.
‘Wait? Now that I think about it, Eliade was Erika’s comrade on the guillotine! They were friends who went to hell holding hands. I’m so happy to see her it brings tears to my eyes.’
Eliade looked Freesia up and down with an unpleasant gaze. A fishy sneer hung on her red lips.
“After such an unsavory incident occurred… To be flashing smiles at the Crown Prince and Grand Duke Reinhardt now, isn’t that a bit light-headed for the daughter of a Count?”
The other ladies sneered and mocked Freesia, as if they had been waiting for this.
“How truly embarrassing. Selling smiles everywhere.”
“She must have forgotten her honor as a noble lady.”
“To even bewitch the Crown Prince and the Grand Duke, what kind of talent does she have? Could it be… something she can’t tell others? Hoho.”
Freesia’s complexion turned pitifully pale.
Even while being insulted, she did not lose her dignity, like a lotus flower in the mud.
“I swear, I have never done anything I am not proud of. I only have a slight acquaintance with the Crown Prince and the Grand Duke.”
“How can I believe those words?”
Eliade pressed her venomously.
“What do I have to do for you to believe me?”
Freesia appealed to their goodwill, but it was a method that didn’t work on that cowardly and mean crowd.
As if she were already a queen, Eliade spoke arrogantly.
“I don’t believe people who only talk. You have to show it with your actions. Since you’ve tarnished your honor as a noble lady, do not attend the royal palace ball.”
“I’m not interested in the ball. You don’t have to worry about that.”
Freesia spoke calmly with a composed and elegant attitude.
Dissatisfied by this, Eliade folded her fan and tapped it against her palm.
“Lady Rubel. You don’t understand at all. You’re duller than I thought. I don’t believe people who only talk. So, I’ll make sure you definitely can’t attend.”
In an instant, her eyes glinted cruelly.
I instinctively ran forward. A startled Rose tried to catch me, but it was already too late.
By the time I came to my senses, I was already standing with my arms wide open, blocking Eliade.
I checked Freesia’s expression first to see if she was okay. Her eyes widened, perhaps surprised by my sudden appearance. The tears she had been holding back glistened.
My heart momentarily sank at the sight of her face, which looked like a child looking for its mother.
“Erika…”
“Who are you? Looking at your clothes, you seem to be a librarian. Why are you interfering?”
Eliade’s hand holding the fan trembled. She raised her eyebrows fiercely, seemingly enraged by the interruption.
I spoke with a professional smile.
“Please be quiet in the library, Lady Schpern.”
Eliade’s snow-white face crumpled like flour dough.
“How dare you…”
She glared at me as if she wanted to eat me alive, then raised one hand high.
Easily angered and prone to violence. It’s the typical behavior pattern of a villainess in a romance-fantasy.
So, it was easy to predict.
Quickly taking a step forward, I caught Eliade’s wrist as it flew towards my face.
She seemed startled, perhaps not expecting me to block her.
‘I’m seeing the effects of my regular archery training here.’
“You’re too slow.”
I gave her a bright smile, following the saying that you can’t spit on a smiling face, but it seemed to fuel her anger even more.
Eliade glared fiercely, gritted her teeth, and threw her fan at me.
The fan handle, decorated with metal, grazed my cheek and flew past.
I quickly turned my body to avoid it, but my right cheek stung.
“Erika, you’re hurt!”
Freesia shouted, sounding close to tears. I was about to reassure her that I was okay when my entire body froze.
Since when had they been there? At the entrance of the stacks stood Crown Prince Ludwig and Grand Duke Calix with stiff expressions.
Calix must have grasped the situation instantly, as his handsome brow furrowed deeply. Sparks of cold anger flickered in his blue eyes.
‘Dangerous. Looking at that man’s eyes, things are going to get out of hand today if I’m not careful.’
Eliade, seemingly unaware of their appearance yet, was looking down at me with arrogant eyes.
She seemed to be mistaken, thinking that I wasn’t moving because I was scared.
I quickly picked up the fan and handed it to Eliade.
“You dropped your fan here. Please be quiet in the library from now on, Lady Schpern.”
“What nonsense are you talking…”
I cut off Eliade’s words as she frowned and threatened her in a low voice.
“His Highness the Crown Prince and Grand Duke Reinhardt are here right now. Wouldn’t it be troublesome if you showed such unseemly behavior?”
Eliade froze. I could feel her embarrassment.
However, soon, her momentarily stiffened mouth drew a soft curve.
“Oh my, I accidentally dropped my fan. Are you okay?”
A voice full of apology and tenderness flowed out. Even so, her glaring eyes remained the same.
Eliade, who even helped me up, turned around, holding the hem of her dress. At the same time, her piercing gaze completely vanished.
“Oh my.”
She turned, seemingly just catching sight of the Crown Prince, and bowed with elegant grace, performing surprise to perfection. Truly befitting the queen of high society.
“Your Highness, you have come to the library. I hope you have been well.”
She was about to greet Calix next, but she turned pale upon meeting his gaze, which was as cold as a blade.
Whether he had seen through her act at a glance, Calix continued to glare at Eliade.
I quickly covered my injured cheek with my hand, lest he discover it.
A lethal tension, on the verge of exploding, filled the stacks.
The anger flowing from Calix spread through the air like ripples.
“How dare you… what have you done?”
His voice, chewing out each word of anger, was a threat in itself.
Eliade seemed to have lost even the will to act. She just stood there, as if she were about to suffocate from the anger he was pouring out.
Her hand, hiding the fan behind her back, trembled violently.
She must have felt it instinctively. That before this man, called the Lion of the Battlefield, no excuse or lie would work.
“Um, Grand Heir… this is…”
The other ladies also huddled in the corner of the bookshelf like a flock of terrified sheep, their heads lowered.
I can see why Calix doesn’t attend social circles. The young ladies admired him, but at the same time, they were afraid of him.
The fearsome reputation of a demon of the battlefield would be a terrifying existence to young ladies who were like flowers in a greenhouse.
‘Ah, wait. Those ladies are poisonous plants rather than flowers.’
“Could one of the ladies explain this situation?”
Even Ludwig, who always smiled, scanned the ladies with a cold gaze. As if he had taken off a mask and returned to his original expression.
I had suspected that the Crown Prince’s image as a fun-loving playboy might be a political mask. Looking at that expression, I was certain.
Given the atmosphere, it seems like the Crown Prince and Calix will unconditionally take my side. But if they do, things will get complicated and tiring.
If the Crown Prince interferes in a minor spat among young ladies, it could lead to gossip that his conduct is light-headed.
Because nobles are like hyenas, always looking for an opportunity to tear at the Crown Prince.
Above all, Eliade is the daughter of the House of Grand Heir Schpern. If Calix censures Eliade, Grand Heir Franz will certainly not sit idly by.
All those romance-fantasy novels I’ve read about the political struggles of noble society and the power struggles of young ladies were worth it.
In this kind of situation, it must be resolved through an amicable settlement between the parties involved.
“Your Highness, Grand Duke. It’s been a while since your last visit.”
I intentionally brightened my expression and raised my voice cheerfully.
Freesia, who was sobbing beside me, widened her eyes.
“You’ve come at the right time. The ladies were just saying they wanted to talk to Your Highness about books. Shall I prepare the reception room?”
Holding one cheek was awkward, but I didn’t lose my composure as a librarian.
Calix’s eyes wavered like waves.
But soon, he seemed to notice the ‘please stay still and don’t make things worse’ look I was sending him, and he returned to his original cold, expressionless face.
Ludwig, as the center of power who had survived the fierce Royal Palace, was also quick to act. Because the sharp gaze looking at the ladies turned gentle immediately.
“I am more than happy to discuss books with you. I could wish for nothing more than to hear poems of love in your beautiful voices.”
When the Crown Prince spoke politely, extending his hand, Eliade blushed shyly.
‘One would think she’s the female lead.’
I clapped my hands inwardly.
“Since Your Highness has asked, of course we must follow. We are overwhelmed with honor.”
Eliade took Ludwig’s hand with a noble posture, as if she had already become the Crown Princess.
She smiled softly at the ladies standing to one side.
“Everyone, His Highness has requested a book club. Let us go together.”
The ladies seemed relieved to have escaped the crisis of having their bullying of Freesia discovered.
They hurriedly followed behind Eliade.
“Ah.”
As if she had just remembered, Eliade tilted her head slightly towards Freesia and greeted her.
“Lady Rubel, I wanted to spend more time with you, but it’s a pity. Let us meet again next time.”
She spoke in a kind voice, as if to a close friend. If I hadn’t known what kind of person she was, I would have been completely fooled.
Eliade even held my hand tenderly, as if she were terribly sorry.
“Librarian, please make sure to treat your wound. I will send some precious medicine good for scars to the library. Well then.”
Seeing the victor’s smile on her lips made my stomach turn.
As expected, these noble-style fights where plots are hatched and language is used as a weapon don’t suit me. It would be much more satisfying to just grab each other’s hair and fight.
However, the Royal Library was my workplace, and dealing with troublesome visitors was my duty as a librarian. I replied with a kind smile.
“Please visit again. I will make sure to prepare the book <Basic Etiquette and Gracious Manners for Ladies>, which I believe is absolutely essential for you, My Lady.”
I couldn’t just let her go without a parting gift, could I?
Next time we meet, I won’t be the one taking the hits, my fellow “Hell Companion.”
“Hmph.”
She chuckled as if amused, but her grip on her hand tightened.
“Is that so? Then…”
The cracks in Eliade’s elegant mask were showing. The veins popping on her forehead were visible even from here.
“I shall see you next time. I look forward to… that book.”
True to her reputation as the queen of social circles, she knew how to choose her time and place. Calix and the Crown Prince were watching.
She forced a smile so strained it looked like her jaw might cramp, then turned away coldly.
See you later, typical villainess—no, comrade in hell.
Next time, I might “accidentally” drop the Ruberia Kingdom Legal Code on your foot.
As he was leaving the stacks, Crown Prince Ludwig looked back briefly. Behind his bright expression, a flash of worry and apology flickered by.
However, he quickly put his mask back on and headed to the reception room with the other ladies.
Calix stepped toward me in a single stride.
“Erika, the wound? Let me see.”
His large palm carefully cupped my cheek. It was only then that I noticed Calix’s hand was trembling slightly.
He was being excessively angry. It wasn’t like him—usually so cool-headed and quick to assess a situation.
Bitter taste filled my mouth, knowing I was the one who made the male lead act this way.
I had stolen Freesia’s role again. I’ve lost count of how many times now. At this rate, I wouldn’t be able to complain if I were called the villainess instead of a supporting character.
“I’m fine. It’s just a light scratch from an accidental graze.”
Freesia hurriedly wrapped her handkerchief around my right cheek. The white corners of her eyes were swollen and red.
“Still, we must treat it quickly, Erika.”
Just then, Rose appeared with Lady Marian. It seemed she had called the lady to ask for help against Eliade’s tyranny.
Usually, Rose was a prim and proper girl who would never dream of running.
Seeing her rushing toward me, not caring if her dress got wrinkled, made my heart swell.
“Are you all right?”
Lady Marian checked the state of my cheek first.
“Fortunately, the wound isn’t deep. Let’s go to my office.”
Lady Marian’s gaze lingered briefly on Calix and Freesia as she inspected my injury.
Calix stood beside me like a stone statue with a grave expression, while Freesia was fighting back tears.
As the true power in the library, the Lady quickly grasped the heavy atmosphere.
Realizing she needed to settle the situation, she called for Rose.
“Librarian Rose, I’m sorry, but could you escort Lady Rubel to her carriage? The Lady seems quite shaken.”
Freesia shook her head and stepped forward.
“I’m fine. Is there anything I can do to help? You were hurt because of me.”
At Freesia’s last words, Calix’s brow furrowed even deeper.
‘My dear Female Lead. Please, don’t say that. You’re just pouring oil on a house fire right now.’
Lady Marian said firmly.
“We appreciate the sentiment. But Librarian Erika needs treatment and rest right now.”
Rose soothed the hesitating Freesia and led her down to the first floor.
The poor female lead kept looking back at me, repeating “I’m so sorry” over and over.
I’m the one who should be sorry.
Somehow, I’ve stolen the role of “getting hurt” twice now.
“Grand Duke, I apologize, but I would like you to support Librarian Erika.”
When Lady Marian made the polite request, Calix nodded immediately.
“Gladly.”
He scooped me up in his arms all at once.
‘Whoa—‘
I repeatedly told myself this was just “patient transport” to calm my frantically racing heart.
***
As soon as we reached the office, Lady Marian treated my cheek.
Looking in the mirror, the wound was luckily just a surface graze and wasn’t deep.
She skillfully applied ointment to the wound and covered it with a clean cloth.
“I’ve done the basic treatment, so when the Director arrives, get some recovery magic. Don’t worry, it won’t leave a scar.”
“Thank you, Lady Marian.”
I cautiously glanced at Calix. He was watching the treatment process with a deadly serious expression.
When Lady Marian gave a low cough, he feigned disinterest and turned his gaze away.
I didn’t miss the chance to grab Lady Marian’s sleeve and mouthed a whisper.
‘Please, stay by my side.’
Looking at Calix’s expression as he suppressed his rage, I felt like being alone with him would be a bad idea.
Lady Marian’s eyes widened. She looked back and forth between Calix and me, then wore a meaningful smile.
Why did that feel like an ill omen?
Lady Marian patted the back of my hand and stood up. She gave a short nod to Calix, who was standing over me like a guardian knight.
“I will bring some tea. I leave Librarian Erika in your care, Grand Duke.”
Lady Marian leaned down slightly and whispered in my ear.
“It seems the two of you have much to discuss. Please, settle it calmly through conversation.”
“What? Wait, that’s a misunderstanding…”
Before I could grab her, Lady Marian closed the office door and left.
Only he and I remained in the room. As if he had been waiting, he approached me and asked in a voice that sounded like he was strangling his own anger.
“How dare she… Did that woman hurt you?”
“It was truly just a simple mistake. I’m fine.”
I answered as lightly as possible, pretending it was nothing.
Calix cautiously caressed the cloth covering the wound on my cheek as if it were a fragile petal.
He looked so grave, it was as if he were the one who had suffered a fatal injury.
Soon, he growled lowly with eyes full of hatred.
“A mistake? That woman should thank God this is a library. If this were a battlefield, I would never have let her be.”
Seeing him mutter as if he wanted to tear Eliade apart, I couldn’t help but sigh.
Getting that worked up just because I got hit by a fan seemed a bit much.
‘Grand Duke, why are you so heated?’
Wait.
I’ve seen this situation somewhere before.
My thin memory finally recalled the original plot.
Right, the chapter titled ‘Villainesses Meet at the Library’!
It was a crucial event where the villainess Eliade, jealous of the Crown Prince’s feelings, first met Freesia.
Eliade cursed Freesia for stealing the Crown Prince’s heart and intentionally started a fight in the library, throwing a fan at Freesia’s face and wounding her.
Freesia, her beautiful face injured, collapsed from the shock. And Calix, witnessing this, was consumed by rage.
That’s how he threatened the terrified Eliade.
“The wound on Lady Rubel’s face shall be paid for with the blood of the Schpern House.”
Franz, upon learning of this, didn’t stay quiet either.
He declared total war on Calix, saying, “How dare you intimidate my sister? This is an insult to the family.”
Starting with this fan incident, the relationship between the House of Reinhardt and the Schpern House began to deteriorate rapidly.
Did I… change the original story again?
Normally, the two houses should be starting a life-or-death struggle right now.
No, wait. Isn’t it a good thing that they aren’t fighting?
I’m a non-violent pacifist.
While I was desperately agonizing over the original story and how to solve the current situation, a deep voice resonated.
“Erika.”
His eyes, which seemed to hold the midnight sky, looked solely at me.
With just a gaze, this man naturally isolated me, making me unable to move my body.
Ultimately, he dominates my heart and imprisons even my soul beneath him.
“Come to the Ducal Estate immediately.”
His voice, controlling his emotions, was low and husky.
“Become the librarian for the Duchy. I will build a library just for you. I will gather every book on the continent for you. I can no longer stand to see you treated this way.”
His face was contorted as if he himself had been insulted.
I felt an impulse to reach out and gently stroke his face.
In the original work, how did Calix say it?
He swore to Freesia that he would fight the Schpern House to restore her honor.
Seeing the wound on the face of the woman he loved, he suffered and raged.
Embracing Calix, who was struggling like a fatally wounded lion, Freesia said: “It’s all right. Thank you for being angry for me. Just having you by my side makes any humiliation bearable.”
Those are the words of a benevolent saintess. And she surely wore such a smile while saying them.
But those are words I can never say. Words that were never mine to begin with.
Because I am not the ‘Female Lead, Freesia.’ I am Seo Ae-rin, and I am Erika.
Instead of thanking the black-haired knight who is raging for me and warmly embracing him, I must lift my head high, glare at him, and spit out words as sharp as awls.
“Why should I? What exactly am I to you, Grand Duke?”
Calix looked at me as if wondering why I was asking something so obvious.
“You are the benefactor of our house, and my precious friend.”
“What you just said is an insult to me.”
The sharp awl spat by my tongue flew and lodged itself in his heart.
Calix stared at me blankly with a shocked face. He didn’t even seem to feel the pain yet.
“If I am truly your benefactor and friend, show me that much respect. This is my life. Do not pressure me to quit my job over a trivial matter like this.”
I took a breath and spoke with emphasis.
“I am not a decorative bird that dies from being hit by a small pebble. There is no need to put me in a cage.”
“Erika… I…”
His husky, rough voice sank into the silence.
His heart is upright and pure, like a flame burning with everything it has, or like pristine white snow.
I am not the owner of that heart.
I am not clever enough to steal someone else’s place.
“Then, I must get back to work. Thank you for the thought.”
“Wait, Erika!”
Calix urgently grabbed my wrist.
His hand was as hot as fire; it felt like I might melt just by touching it.
“I apologize for what I just said. But I hope you remember this one thing.”
He looked up at me, reverently kissing my wrist.
The kiss was as soft as a falling feather, but at the same time, it was as hot as if he were searing a deep brand into my wrist.
“You are my benefactor, and I have yet to repay that debt. If anyone dares to harm my benefactor, I will surely make them pay.”
The heat starting from my wrist spread through my entire body.
The sound of my once-calm heartbeat echoed in my ears and dizzied my mind.
This flame is dangerous. It will swallow me up in an instant.
I struggled with all my might to twist my wrist and escape his grasp.
Calix let go of my hand obediently, but his eyes were filled with worry for me.
“I will send my personal physician immediately. I will also procure the finest medicine for the wound. I will come to see you again soon.”
He gave me a short bow and left the office.
Only then did the tension that had stiffened my whole body release. I exhaled as I slumped onto the sofa.
I pressed one hand against my heart, which was still racing like a wild horse, to calm it down.
‘Why is he doing this to me? Save those sweet glances and heart-stopping words for Freesia.’
I was lying there for a moment, thinking about changing my clothes and getting some proper rest, when…
“Erika?”
Someone called me, opening the door slightly.
Rose peeked her face through the gap in the door, cautiously checking the mood.
“Are you okay?”
“Of course, I’m fine. Come in, Rose.”
Rose sat beside me with a pained face and squeezed my hand tightly.
“Is the wound on your cheek okay? Just bear with it for a bit. Once the Director casts recovery magic, there won’t be a scar.”
“It’s not a deep enough wound to leave a scar. Thank you for worrying.”
A gentle smile came to my face, grateful for her concern. Rose let out a heavy sigh.
“No. Lady Schpern is too cruel. This hasn’t happened just once or twice. She mostly does it to her rivals.”
Wait, what did I just hear?
Doubtful of my own ears, I asked back.
“Throwing fans is a habit for Lady Schpern?”
Rose nodded with a grave expression.
“Lady Schpern uses the tactic of throwing her fan at anyone who displeases her. She wounds their face so they can’t show up in social circles. While they are recovering, she spreads rumors to ruin their reputation and drives them out.”
I thought she was just an ill-tempered lady throwing things because she couldn’t control her anger.
To think she tried to use such a wicked tactic on Freesia.
The anger toward Eliade that I had forced myself to suppress boiled up again.
“Why hasn’t anyone protested? There must be more than one or two ladies who have suffered.”
“Because if you stand up to her, you might face retaliation far worse than a wound on the face. Who would dare stand up to the daughter of the House of Grand Duke Schpern, who enjoys the favor of the Royal Family?”
Rose whispered, looking around as if afraid someone might hear.
Thinking about Eliade doing such ugly things with her meager power behind her made my stomach turn.
‘I really should have flipped things over once. I held back because I didn’t want to cause trouble at work, but the saying is true: if you keep enduring, you become a pushover.’
“She’s truly malicious. I really should have twisted her wrist…”
Rose was startled to see me muttering seriously while resting my chin on my hand.
“Erika, you shouldn’t say things like that. It was a blessing from heaven that the Crown Prince and the Grand Duke arrived just in time.”
That’s not it. If those people hadn’t come, I would have grabbed Eliade by her hair and given her a proper lesson.
Rose wiped the sweat from my forehead with a handkerchief, looking at me with pity.
“You’ve been through a lot, haven’t you? It’s been a hard day, so you should leave work early. Leave the remaining tasks to me.”
Rose spoke confidently, but for some reason, I didn’t quite trust her.
“But… will it be okay?”
“Have you forgotten that I am the senior librarian?”
Rose gave me a wink. I felt pushed into it and nodded.
“Yes, I’m sorry, but I’ll leave it to you for today.”
Thinking back, I received my librarian training from Lady Marian; I don’t recall learning anything from Rose.
Still, remembering her effort to help me, I left the office.
***
I thought about calling a carriage to go back to my residence, but then I suddenly remembered my hideout for the first time in a long while.
‘Good. Let’s rest there for a bit.’
The thought of relaxing in my own personal resting spot and reading a book leisurely made me feel a bit better.
I was humming as I took light steps toward the back of the second-floor stacks, but only for a moment.
“Damn it.”
A curse escaped my lips automatically.
In my cozy hideout, where the warm sunlight sat beneath the window, a large leopard with blue-gold eyes—no, the Crown Prince—was waiting.
Unlike me, who was glaring with a rotten expression, the Crown Prince smiled brightly and waved.
“Yo, Librarian Erika, you’re here?”
“What about the ladies?”
“The book club with tea was cancelled. Unfortunately, we ran out of tea leaves.”
The Crown Prince shrugged as if it couldn’t be helped.
“That makes no sense. You know how much Lady Marian values tea time. Even if we ran out of ink, she would make sure tea leaves were restocked every day.”
“…Actually, Grand Duke Schpern showed up. He said his sister had committed a great rudeness and took her away.”
At the mention of Franz, my body stiffened involuntarily.
I changed the subject to hide my agitation.
“I see. But Your Highness, why are you here instead of going back to the Royal Palace?”
Ludwig pushed a book cart he had parked to one side. On top of it was a tea set, tea, and high-quality chocolates.
“I find the tea I drink at the library to be the best. It makes me feel at ease. In that sense, would you give me the honor of having a cup of tea with me, Lady Diel?”
I stared at him, flabbergasted.
“Didn’t you just say there were no tea leaves?”
“I absolutely cannot drink tea in an uncomfortable setting. I only drink tea with someone I can share my heart with. Now, sit down, Erika.”
Seeing Ludwig’s cheeky expression, my energy to be angry vanished. I went to the window and sat down.
The Crown Prince began brewing tea with skillful hands.
His elegant figure preparing tea under the sunlight was as stunning as a painting.
“Why did you just send the ladies away? You usually get along and play well with them.”
As Ludwig handed me the teacup, he looked intently into my eyes.
The mask of a playboy, a good-for-nothing Crown Prince who was despised for enjoying pleasure, fell off right in front of me.
“If I had had tea with them, I’m afraid I would have made the mistake of throwing my teacup.”
Coldly suppressed emotions rose in his eyes like ripples in a teacup.
Anger like tea dregs that hadn’t been fully filtered out, self-reproach, and apology.
‘Could it be because of me? …I don’t want to add an emotional burden to the Crown Prince as well.’
I agonized for a moment and took a sip of the warm black tea.
‘Ah, what the hell.’
“Earlier, that was just a game of ‘Pass the Fan’ with Lady Schpern.”
The Crown Prince narrowed his eyes and asked with a suspicious look.
“Is that true?”
Of course, it was an improvised, flimsy excuse.
“Oh, you didn’t know? It’s a popular game among the ladies. When the opponent throws a fan, you dodge it and then pick it up to throw it back. If Your Highness hadn’t come, my attack would have succeeded and I would have won.”
I lied nonchalantly without even blinking.
Ludwig stared at me with a dumbfounded face, then suddenly burst into laughter.
“Haha, you truly are positive and amusing. This is why I can’t help but like you.”
“Ah, yes. I am overwhelmed by your grace.”
I replied half-heartedly and popped a small chocolate into my mouth.
Sweets are indeed the truth and a blessing.
While I was enjoying the heavenly sweetness, Ludwig moved closer.
His red hair shimmering under the sunlight was as luminously beautiful as a ruby.
His blue-gold eyes watched me seriously for the first time.
“I am aware of Eliade’s misdeeds. There was simply no way to stop her without clear evidence. Why didn’t you ask me for help earlier?”
“It’s not right for Your Highness to involve yourself in a private quarrel. Besides, you know well that the House of Grand Duke Schpern is looking for any opportunity to frame Lord Calix.”
It was a political reason I couldn’t bear to tell Calix.
If I had told him, he would have drawn his sword and stormed into the House of Grand Duke Schpern immediately.
Surprise and admiration flashed through Ludwig’s eyes.
“I knew you were capable, but I didn’t realize you understood the political issues between noble houses as well.”
“When you’re at the Royal Library information desk, you hear a lot of information.”
Ludwig looked at me with an even more serious and respectful expression.
“I would like to make a formal proposal to you.”
“What do you mean?”
“Erika, enter the palace and become my personal librarian. If it’s you, a Book Reader, you will surely show me a clear direction for my future, like a Book Finder.”
Ludwig’s tone was no longer playful; it was solemn and serious. I realized that his words were not a simple request, but a command given as the Crown Prince.
‘What is it with this Crown Prince guy all of a sudden too…’
Why are there so many people asking me to be their personal librarian today? Is it a day for a windfall of work?
It’s an explosion of popularity that I don’t welcome at all.
I slowly tilted my cup and finished the tea to the last drop.
Having finished the warm drink, I felt energized and my mind calmed down.
To the point where the stinging pain faded.
“I am but a mere librarian, so I do not dare offer advice to Your Highness. However, I can tell you one thing.”
I looked straight into Ludwig’s blue-gold eyes.
Deep within the eyes of the man who dreamt of being a free spirit, a longing for and a terror of the throne wavered.
“In my experience,” I began, “it’s much more peaceful to blaze my own trail.”
I took a moment to catch my breath. Ludwig listened to my words in silence.
“If I may be so bold: the path to the throne is one you must walk alone. After all, it is you who will ascend to that seat. You must be the one to agonize, to decide, and to determine your own direction. No one can do that for you.”
Having finished, I looked down at my empty palms.
There was no such thing as a compass that pointed out the path of one’s life.
In the end, I only came to understand it after colliding head-on with the world and letting my heart get bruised.
Just like the path I am walking now.
