- Chapter 16 - There Are Too Many Guests in the Office
Two days after successfully attending the State Council meeting and the tea party at the Queen’s Palace, I finally made my official debut at the Royal Library. It had taken some time due to the preparations for the reopening.
As soon as we returned to the Duke’s estate, Calix had to hit the ground running to prepare for the “creation of a new knighthood”—the absolute bombshell the Crown Prince had dropped on him.
The lights in his office were always on until the middle of the night. Watching him work away without even having time to share a meal together, I felt a deep sense of sympathy and compassion for the man.
I mean, I only show up to work for the paycheck, but that guy is already overflowing with wealth and status, and yet he still works himself to the bone. Tsk-tsk.
With a warm send-off from the lovely Michael, I headed toward the library in the ducal carriage.
To be honest, as the carriage pulled up to the library, my heart fluttered with a mix of nervousness and anticipation.
‘Surely there won’t be another fanatical, welcoming crowd waiting for me like last time, right?’
After fixing my hair, checking my outfit, and putting on the most haughty, dignified expression I could muster, I stepped out of the carriage—only to find not a single living soul in front of the library. A desolate wind simply swept past, kicking up a bit of dust.
‘Ha, well. They do say popularity is as fleeting as the wind. Still, a bit disappointing. …Ugh, I feel ridiculous. Let’s just get to work.’
Leaving the fleeting glory of being called the “Goddess of War” behind, I returned to my identity as a librarian and vigorously pushed open the library doors.
The exact moment the familiar scent of paper greeted me—
A massive bouquet of roses flew straight into my arms.
“Wh-what is this?”
As I caught the bouquet in a daze, Rose stood before me, smiling radiantly.
“Chief Librarian Erika, congratulations on your return to work!”
“Chief Librarian, congratulations on your promotion!”
“You are the pride of the Royal Library! Congratulations!”
Cheers and applause erupted all around, leaving me utterly bewildered.
William, Madam Marian, Wayne from the restoration department, the cute errand girl Nella, and about a dozen other library staff members were all welcoming me with bright smiles.
Seeing my library family genuinely rejoicing for my sake brought a lump to my throat, and tears threatened to spill over.
“Th-thank you, everyone, for celebrating with me.”
Barely holding back my tears, I bowed deeply to convey my gratitude.
William took a step forward. The hand holding his documents tightly to his chest was trembling slightly.
His expression was gentle, but if you looked closely, his jaw was set stiffly and the corners of his mouth were twitching. His eyes were quite bloodshot, too.
‘Wait, don’t tell me… have you been crying?’
“As Erika’s sponsor… words cannot express how joyful I am today. To think you have become the Chief Librarian… Lord Diel in heaven must be rejoicing as well.”
‘If he keeps this up, my sponsor is going to wrap me in a hug and burst into tears of overwhelming emotion.’
Unable to watch any longer, Madam Marian stepped in and smoothly snatched the documents from the Director’s hands.
“Since the Director is currently feeling a bit overwhelmed with emotion, I shall present the certificate of appointment on his behalf.”
With a solemn yet earnest demeanor, Madam Marian handed the certificate to me.
“As of today, Lady Erika Diel is officially appointed as the Chief Librarian of the Royal Library. We ask that you continue to dedicate your efforts to the development and honor of the Royal Library.”
I respectfully accepted the certificate with both hands, and another round of enthusiastic applause poured in from the library family.
William turned away and secretly wiped his tears with a handkerchief. It was deeply touching to see someone usually so composed react with such profound joy. It felt a bit like watching an overly doting older brother who cares only about his younger sister.
Madam Marian, who had been watching me with a warm smile, suddenly clapped her hands as if remembering something.
“Ah, the appointment package also includes a document listing the benefits of being the Chief Librarian. Take a look. It’s the most important part, after all.”
She gave me a playful wink. Suddenly feeling nervous, my hands trembled slightly as I unfolded the papers.
First, I bypassed the actual appointment letter, which was written in highly flowery rhetoric, and went straight to check the promotion benefits.
-
-
Immunity from prosecution for unavoidable illegal acts
-
-
-
A threefold salary increase
-
-
-
Pension payout after retirement
-
-
-
Provision of a private office
-
My jaw dropped completely on its own.
Good heavens, for the benefits to be this abundant. This place really is the ultimate dream job!
Above all else, immunity!
To think I actually secured the very thing I had been desperately waiting for. With this, even if the worst happens and I get tangled up with rebel forces and dragged to the guillotine, I’ll at least be able to save my own neck!
I barely managed to suppress the urge to face the royal palace and shout “Hurrah!” three times alongside three deep bows.
Instead, I looked at the flag of Ruberia hanging over the information desk and made a firm vow in my heart:
‘From this day forward, I will dedicate myself to this place, even if it means selling my soul!’
“Ahem, I suppose I became a bit too emotional.”
Having returned to his usual self, William approached me holding a purple robe. The fabric looked noticeably more luxurious than the standard librarian uniform robe I was wearing, and it was elegantly adorned with gold embroidery.
“This is the exclusive magic robe provided to the Chief Librarian. It wards off most heat and cold, and it even possesses a defensive effect against physical impacts.”
A magic robe! At the very least, I wouldn’t have to worry about starving to death during hard times. If I ever fell into poverty, I could probably fetch a fortune for this on the black market.
William personally draped the robe over my shoulders. It was cozy yet lightweight, fitting me as comfortably as if it had been custom-tailored for my body.
Madam Marian squeezed my hands tightly with a proud smile.
“It feels like just yesterday when Librarian Erika first arrived at the library, and now your abilities have been recognized to the point of becoming the Chief Librarian. I am truly so proud of you.”
“Thank you. It’s all because you guided me so well, Madam.”
“Fufu, look at you being so humble. Now, shall we go see your new office?”
Madam Marian quickly took the lead and began walking up the stairs.
‘Wait, I’m getting the office right this second?’
I hadn’t even prepared myself mentally, and all my personal belongings were still down at the information desk.
“Am I no longer working at the information desk?”
“You will be assigned to different duties now. We can handle the handover slowly after your office is settled.”
Though I followed her up the stairs, a corner of my heart grew heavy. Rose, who would now be left alone at the information desk, kept weighing on my mind.
The memory of her face—how happy she had been to finally have a colleague when I first became a librarian—kept flashing through my head.
Once the appointment ceremony concluded, the staff members returned to their respective stations. Down below, Rose looked busy checking returned books back at the desk.
‘I need to find some time later to have a proper chat with her.’
It bothered me to leave her all by herself.
***
“Now, it’s this room right here.”
Madam Marian led me to an office located at the very corner of the third floor. With a racing, expectant heart, I gripped the bronze doorknob and pushed the door open.
Though modest in size, the office featured a large window that let in the warm sunlight. It was a wonderful space, complete with a small walk-in closet and a private restroom.
There was just one critical issue: it was entirely empty, devoid of a single piece of furniture.
Since the Madam was right beside me, I couldn’t openly let my disappointment show, but practical worries immediately rushed to the forefront of my mind.
‘Don’t tell me I have to buy all the furniture with my own money? I haven’t even received this month’s salary yet… Wait, when exactly does the pay raise kick in? Should I ask for a salary advance just to buy a desk?’
I cautiously turned to ask the Madam.
“By any chance, are there any spare desks or chairs available that aren’t being used?”
“Oh my, didn’t you know? Your gifts will be arriving shortly.”
“Gifts? From whom?”
As I blinked in confusion, the Madam offered a serene smile.
“To celebrate your promotion, His Highness the Crown Prince sent over a sofa, chairs, and a table, while His Grace Grand Duke Reinhardt sent a desk and bookcase set. They should be arriving any moment now.”
Right on cue, a noisy commotion echoed from the first floor. Madam Marian walked out the door with a welcoming expression.
“Oh, look at that. They’ve arrived right on time.”
About five or six movers were hauling furniture up the stairs, dripping with sweat as they marched up in a line.
As the pieces of furniture appeared one after another, my eyes widened in sheer disbelief.
From a lavish mahogany desk adorned with gold leaf patterns that looked fit for royalty, to an imposing, intricately carved bookcase set, and an armchair that looked like a master craftsman had poured his very soul into making it.
There was also a luxurious couch and table that belonged in a noble lady’s salon, along with a velvet stool ornamented with silver and jewels.
They were ridiculously expensive, extravagant pieces of furniture that didn’t suit a librarian’s office in the slightest.
Even Madam Marian admired them as she inspected the pieces.
“My word, both His Highness the Crown Prince and His Grace the Grand Duke possess truly exquisite taste in furniture.”
“Regarding those gentlemen… do you think they mistook my office for their own personal workspaces? This is honestly a bit overwhelming.”
The Madam gently patted my shoulder.
“It simply goes to show how deeply they hold you in their thoughts, Librarian Erika. Now, let us get everything organized. I will send up some hands to help if you need them.”
“Thank you for your thoughtfulness.”
After Madam Marian headed back down and the movers departed upon arranging the furniture, I was left alone in the office.
I rolled up my sleeves. I slipped on the arm covers I usually wore for work and picked up a rag in one hand and a broom in the other.
From here on out, the real cleaning and organizing fell to me.
I threw the window wide open, dusted off the curtains, and wiped down the desk and bookcases with a dry cloth.
The desk and bookcases gleamed so brilliantly it actually felt burdensome to use them.
While I appreciated the thoughtfulness of the Crown Prince and the Grand Duke, this was far too extravagant for me. Personally, I prefer a simple style.
Even so, as I swept and scrubbed away at my very own office, a hum naturally escaped my lips.
‘To think I have a private office all to myself. I never imagined I’d fulfill my dream of becoming a successful career woman—something I never managed in reality—right here in this place. To the world of this novel that I used to curse out as a damn transmigration… I sincerely apologize. This storybook world really is a beautiful place after all. Hehehe.’
As I stood there letting out a loose, goofy laugh all by myself, there was a knock at the door. I turned around to find Rose standing there, cradling a gift box in her arms.
“May I come in?”
“Ah, of course. Please come in, Rose.”
“This is my gift to you. It’s a high-end tea set carried by our Madison Merchant Coalition. It’s a masterwork that we even supply to the royal court.”
Inside the gift box was a gold-rimmed teacup and teapot set with beautifully carved handles. On top of that, there were glass jars filled with various tea leaves and a box of cookies.
“The tea and cookies are actually a gift from Madam Marian. She baked them herself.”
“Ah… thank you both so much. I will treasure them.”
Rose looked around my office, her mouth falling open as she took in the lavish furniture filling the space.
“Is this really the Royal Library? It feels exactly like a noblewoman’s salon. The furniture is incredibly dignified and high-class. Even in the capital, it’s rare to see pieces of this caliber.”
“They were sent by the Crown Prince and the Grand Duke. They don’t match my personal taste at all. Honestly, they’re so fancy it’s almost intimidating to try and work here.”
When I let out a sigh and complained, Rose flashed a knowing, meaningful smile. Her eyes sparkled with her characteristic curiosity and sharp observation.
“To receive such affection from the most eligible bachelors in all of Ruberia… you must have saved a nation in your past life, Erika.”
“Affection? You’ve got it all wrong. I’m certain they only gave me these as a reward because I worked so hard as the Book Reader.”
Fearing that Rose might misunderstand and start imagining some grand love triangle romance between me, the Crown Prince, and the Grand Duke, I spoke with firm finality.
Rose elegantly covered her mouth with her hand and chuckled.
“My, how humble. You are the undisputed Goddess of the Royal Library, after all.”
“Please! Spare me the goddess talk. I feel like dying of embarrassment every time I hear it,” I cried out, barely resisting the urge to tear my hair out.
Rose dropped her playful gaze and nodded.
“Mm, I understand. Honestly, I get goosebumps whenever I have to say the word ‘goddess’ too. I know it’s just a political strategy by the Crown Prince to manage public sentiment, but still. You certainly have your work cut out for you, Erika.”
I stared back at Rose in genuine surprise, caught entirely off guard.
It hit me anew that she was the eldest daughter of a family running a massive merchant coalition. Even if she seemed indifferent to library affairs on the surface, she was always accurately reading the situation unfolding around her.
I carefully watched Rose’s expression before speaking what was truly on my mind. It was the heavy weight of apology and guilt toward her that had been pressing down on my chest.
“Rose, you’ve been at the Royal Library much longer than I have, so it feels awkward that a newcomer like me got promoted first. And… making you work the information desk all by yourself again, I just…”
Unable to bring myself to finish the sentence, I bit my lip.
I knew all too well how a senior colleague might feel when a green junior gets promoted ahead of them. Even if Rose hated and resented me for it, I wouldn’t have a single leg to stand on.
Rose’s eyes widened in surprise for a moment, but then her expression quickly shifted into a scowl. Her beautiful eyebrows arched upward.
“Just what on earth do you take me for, Erika?”
Startled by Rose dropping her honorifics and throwing out casual speech so bluntly, I immediately shut my mouth.
‘If I say one more word, it feels like she might actually hit me. Better stay completely quiet.’
She knitted her brows and bit her lower lip tightly. The words that finally spilled from her sternly set mouth were:
“I consider you a true friend.”
“Uh… what?”
I doubted my own ears. Her facial expression and her words did not match up at all!
Rose looked utterly frustrated that she had been forced to voice her inner feelings with her own mouth. She gave a sharp, sassy nod.
“After coming up to the capital and frequenting high society, I met numerous young ladies, but I’ve never found a friend I connected with as deeply as you.”
Though her tone sounded like she was pouting, I could feel the warm affection underlying her words, causing a faint smile to spread across my face.
“Thank you, Rose… for thinking of me that way.”
Sensing that it was what she wanted, I dropped the formalities and matched her casual speech.
Rose looked at me with earnest eyes.
“As your friend, I am sincerely happy that you got promoted. So it’s not something you should ever feel sorry about, got it?”
I was incredibly grateful for her consideration. My heart grew as warm and cozy as a fluffy blanket freshly dried in the sun. I could do nothing but nod vigorously.
Rose flashed a bright, girlish smile.
“Everyone has their own unique strengths. For me, I love observing people. Being born as the eldest daughter of a merchant coalition, the very first thing I learned was how to judge people and distinguish between allies and enemies. Commerce is, fundamentally, all about human relationships. That’s exactly why I chose the information desk.”
‘Ah, so that’s why she stayed at the main desk even though she was the administrator in charge of the magical grimoires.’
Until now, I had simply assumed it was because her work with the magic books required secrecy.
Her refreshing personality and broad-mindedness filled me with gratitude.
“Rose, thank you so much. The only reason a clueless person like me could become the Chief Librarian is because you looked out for me, Madam Marian took care of me, and the library family cheered me on.”
Listening quietly, Rose crossed her arms and let out a thoroughly satisfied smile.
“Hmph, see to it that you never forget you rose to this position of success thanks to the guidance of your senior librarian.”
“Yes, ma’am. I shall never forget this grace, Senior. I’ll treat you to a wonderful meal to celebrate the promotion.”
“Erika, you’ve sworn on the honor of your house now, so don’t you dare forget it.”
Our eyes met, and without either of us prompting the other, we both burst into laughter.
Having a colleague and friend who truly believed in and supported me made my heart feel immensely secure and warm.
“Well, time to get back to work. I’ll head down now.”
As Rose walked out the door, she suddenly stopped and turned back around.
“Oh, by the way, Erika.”
“Yeah?”
“I really like watching you work.”
“You do…?”
“You have a knack for drawing people in. The people around you always look so joyful and happy. And watching that makes me happy, too.”
Her words made me incredibly shy, and I couldn’t think of anything to say in response. I could only offer Rose a sheepish, embarrassed smile in return.
***
After Rose returned to the information desk, I continued tidying up my office.
By the time I finished organizing my belongings, lining the bookshelves with books, and sweeping the carpeted floor, lunchtime had already arrived.
I went down to the cafeteria, ate a quick sandwich, and ran into Nella right at the entrance as I was leaving. The young girl scurried over to me like a little squirrel.
“Nella, have you eaten lunch? Thank you for celebrating with me earlier.”
Nella, her hair tied in adorable twin pigtails, nodded cutely.
“Yes, Miss Librarian! Congratulations on your promotion. Earlier, I brought up the flower baskets that arrived for you and placed them in your office. There were so many of them!”
“Oh dear, you must have worked so hard carrying them all the way up to the third floor. Hold on a second.”
I fished out a bag of cookies I had kept in my pocket and handed it to Nella.
“Consider this your errand fee. Share them with your younger brother.”
“Wow, Tommy is going to love this! Thank you so much!”
Nella accepted the bag of cookies, her face lighting up like a flower.
“By the way, your office is absolutely wonderful. It looked just like a princess’s room!”
Nella spoke dreamily, her large, round eyes sparkling with wonder. The sight was so incredibly precious and lovely that a smile naturally formed on my lips.
To a child’s eyes, an office packed with such magnificent furniture could easily look like a room belonging to royalty.
“You can come visit whenever you like. I’ll treat you to cookies and tea.”
“Really? Are you sure I won’t be a bother?”
Her voice was full of excitement, yet tinged with a bit of hesitation. I gently stroked the girl’s rounded head and smiled warmly.
“A bother? You are welcome anytime, Nella. Feel free to come by whenever you want to drink tea and read books.”
At those words, Nella let out a radiant, completely innocent smile.
***
When I returned to my office, about a dozen flower baskets were lined up right in front of the door.
“Good grief, I’m going to suffocate from the scent. Still, isn’t this a bit too much?”
After moving all the flower baskets inside, I checked every single congratulatory card pinned to them.
“Who sent all these? I had no idea I was this popular.”
There were bouquets from Grand Duke Reinhardt, Crown Prince Ludwig, Director William, Lady Freesia, and even from young ladies of noble houses I had never heard of before.
Judging by the phrase “Congratulations to the beautiful and valiant Goddess of War” written on the cards, I wondered if they were my enthusiastic fans.
There was even a bouquet from young master Zeke. This one was quite surprising; I hadn’t expected it at all.
“Hmm, what did that arrogant brat write? Don’t tell me it’s a challenge to a duel…”
I opened Zeke’s congratulatory card.
I will absolutely win our next match. And once I claim victory, I shall formally confess my feelings to Lady Diel…
I slammed the card shut instantly, as if I had just seen an overdue credit card bill.
What on earth did I just look at?
I truly cannot keep up with Zeke’s train of thought.
The guy who was straining every nerve just to beat me is suddenly confessing his love out of nowhere? Why? The gear shift is instantaneous.
Besides, how did everyone even find out about my promotion? Don’t tell me the Crown Prince leaked my information to the extra-edition newspapers again?
I picked up the card from the final flower basket.
The sender was Franz Schpern.
Reflexively, I almost ripped the card to pieces, but I managed to restrain myself at the last second. Written on the card was a perfectly normal message:
Congratulations on your promotion, Lady Erika Diel.
“Sigh, what should I do with this basket? It feels strangely ominous.”
I glared at the flower basket sent by Franz and let out a sigh.
The person might be guilty, but the flowers did nothing wrong.
I neatly arranged the flower baskets on the floor and finished up the rest of the cleaning. After sorting out the desk and the bookcases, I wiped down the couch and the table until they were spotless.
Only after organizing the gifted tea set and cookies neatly inside the cabinet was the office cleaning finally complete.
As I sat down on the couch to catch my breath, a gentle knock echoed at the door.
When I opened it, Freesia was standing there, her hands demurely folded, wearing a sweet and gentle smile.
Her pale pink dress, layered with frills, lace, and ribbons, accentuated her loveliness, and her braided platinum-blonde hair gave off a faint sheen.
Ah, she startled me. For a second, I thought a princess had stepped right out of a fairy tale.
“Welcome, Freesia. How did you know I was here?”
“I asked Miss Rose at the information desk. When I heard the news that you had been promoted, Erika, I wanted to congratulate you… I came without giving any prior notice. I hope I’m not intruding?”
“Not at all. In fact, I’m incredibly happy you came. Please, come on in.”
I hurriedly ushered her into the office. Freesia stepped inside politely and took a careful look around the room. Her violet eyes sparkled with amazement.
“Oh my, your office is truly wonderful. It suits you perfectly, Erika.”
‘Well, it actually suits you—the female lead—much better than me.’
Stepping into this room, it felt so natural that it almost seemed like it belonged to her from the start.
I prepared the tea set and black tea I had received as gifts and served them to her.
After taking an elegant sip, she immediately complimented the aroma and flavor of the tea. It hit me once again that she was a highly refined noble young lady who had been raised with great care and education. Every single one of her subtle movements radiated her high-bred upbringing.
“Ah, right, Freesia. I received the flower basket you sent. Thank you so much.”
“I’m glad you liked it. But…”
Her voice trailed off as she quietly set her teacup down.
Then, as if making a firm resolve, she bit her lovely lips slightly. Her earnest eyes looked straight into mine.
“I heard the story of how bravely you fought against the monster. People are praising your exploits, saying that the Goddess of War has manifested.”
“That just happened by chance… calling me a goddess is a massive exaggeration.”
I rattled off excuses, feeling strangely like a student who had gotten caught doing something wrong.
Why did it feel like Freesia was upset with me? Did I do something wrong?
Actually, come to think of it, I’ve committed far too many offenses against the female lead.
I met the male lead before her, got saved by him instead of her, received his handkerchief, accepted his knight’s vow, and even kissed him…
Should I just confess all my sins right now and tell her to rip my hair out to her heart’s content?
“Erika.”
Suddenly, Freesia lifted her fair, delicate hand.
‘Are you really about to grab my hair? Just how much did you find out before coming here?’
However, what Freesia grasped tightly was my hand. Her touch held a sense of desperate urgency.
“Please… don’t become a hero.”
“Freesia…?”
“Others praise you as a hero, but I was so worried that you might have been hurt. Please, prioritize your own safety above all else. I beg of you.”
Seeing her earnestly pleading with tears welling up in her eyes made me feel like a heinous criminal.
“Yes, I understand. I’ll be careful from now on so that you won’t have to worry about me, Freesia.”
I tightly held Freesia’s delicate hand back and gave her a firm promise.
A long-hidden, deep-seated yearning pooled in Freesia’s violet eyes.
“Whenever I look at you, Erika, you remind me of my mother. When I heard the news that you fought against a ferocious monster, I was so terrified and distressed that I could barely breathe.”
Freesia’s body stiffened completely. A turbulent storm of emotions swirled within her violet eyes.
Sadness, resentment, anger… these were unfamiliar, devastating emotions that I had never felt from her before, as she was always so gentle and sweet.
“My mother was… brutally murdered by a monster. Back then, I was so young that I wasn’t even allowed to see her in her final moments. They said it would be too much for a young child to handle. That is why I am so terrified that I might lose you the same way, Erika… Please…”
Seeing her expression look as though her world was collapsing, my heart ached with profound pity and sorrow for her.
The only thing I could do was quietly wrap my arms around her shoulders.
Her fragile frame trembled faintly within my embrace.
Freesia rested her face against my shoulder and exhaled a heavy breath. I gently stroked her shoulder, hoping to offer even a small shred of comfort to her as she immersed herself in the memory of her late mother.
Her chest heaved as she let out a long sigh. Like a child seeking a mother’s warmth, she buried her cheek against my shoulder.
“Mother…”
It was a sorrowful murmur, as if she were swallowing down her rising tears, unable to even voice her agony, pressing it deep down inside.
I could feel the sheer weight of her pent-up emotions.
Slowly, I stroked Freesia’s back. Rather than offering awkward words of consolation, I wanted to soothe her with my warmth, conveying that everything was okay, and that everything would turn out fine.
I wondered how much time had passed.
By the time the steaming tea had grown cold, Freesia gently pulled away from my embrace.
As if feeling embarrassed, she kept her head bowed deeply. The tips of her small, round ears were completely red.
“To show you such a pathetic sight on such a wonderful day… I’ve caused you trouble. I’m sorry.”
Her small shoulders trembled slightly.
‘Oh no, what’s wrong now?’
As I flusteredly wracked my brain, a way to comfort Freesia suddenly crossed my mind.
I carefully wiped away the tears from her reddened eyes, her unshed tears rubbing off onto my hand.
“Everyone has moments when they want to cry. I’m completely fine.”
“But… I don’t know how I can look you in the face, Erika.”
She was still biting her lovely lips, unable to bring herself to meet my gaze.
“Then how about we do this?”
I intentionally brightened my voice.
“Since I lent you my shoulder this time, you have to lend me yours next time. No matter what the situation is, unconditionally.”
Freesia seemed a bit dazed for a moment, as if she couldn’t immediately process my words. Then, a smile bloomed on her face like a small flower bud opening up.
“Yes, of course. For you, Erika, I will lend you my shoulder anytime, under any circumstances.”
Freesia mirrored me with her crystal-clear eyes. Her violet eyes shone brilliantly, filled with adoration and reverence.
“You always save me. It’s almost as if… you are my very own goddess.”
Her gaze was locked entirely onto me.
Beyond those pleading eyes, an unfathomable, deep, dark craving and obsession seemed to squirm.
“Freesia…?”
For a split second, I doubted my own eyes, wondering if I had misseen it.
Why on earth did the girl in front of me overlap with Franz—the one who always directed such obsessive gazes at me?
Knock, knock.
A calm knock shattered my train of thought.
‘That’s impossible. There’s no way Freesia would be obsessed with me. I must be physically drained from working too much. That’s why I’m having all these ridiculous thoughts.’
“It seems we have another guest. Just a moment.”
I asked for Freesia’s understanding and quickly opened the door.
William was standing there holding a small box, a gentle smile gracing his face.
“My, it seems you already have a guest. May I join you as well?”
“You are always welcome, Director. Please, have a seat.”
Stepping into the office, he noticed Freesia and offered a polite bow.
“Ah, Lady Rubel. I trust you have been well.”
“Yes. Thanks to your concern, I have been getting along without any trouble.”
While the two exchanged greetings, I poured warm black tea into William’s cup. Seated in an armchair, William slowly surveyed the interior of the office.
“The office is magnificent. The sheer presence of the furniture is especially impressive.”
“Right? Phew. The furniture has so much presence that it practically eclipses me. But since they’re gifts from high-status individuals, I didn’t have much of a choice.”
I let out a heavy sigh, openly airing my grievances.
My benevolent sponsor offered a wry smile and nodded.
“Haha, I don’t think you need to worry about that. I’ve never met anyone with a presence as powerful as yours, Librarian Erika.”
‘Hmm, is that a compliment, or a subtle jab?’
I shot William a suspicious glare for a brief second.
The moment he flashed a grin and held out the gift box, my disgruntled feelings vanished like melting snow.
“I hope you find this to your liking, Librarian Erika.”
Inside the box was a fountain pen, gleaming with a smooth polish. It was an exquisite piece crafted with a body of obsidian, adorned with gold filigree and a silver nib.
“Could this be… is this the same magic fountain pen you gave me before?”
“Correct. Just like that pen, it possesses a barrier effect. It can only be used once, but the duration is longer than the previous one.”
“Oh, you really didn’t have to prepare something like this… thank you, I’ll put it to excellent use.”
Without any hesitation, I accepted the magic fountain pen right away.
Didn’t he say this single pen could buy a grand mansion?
In the absolute worst-case scenario, I could just grab this one item, flee to the countryside, and live comfortably for the rest of my days.
With William joining us, the atmosphere brightened considerably. In his calm yet warm voice, he shared various engaging stories about society and cultural history.
Freesia listened intently, her eyes sparkling like a curious child. Seeing her look so much brighter put my mind at ease.
I joined the conversation comfortably, and laughter bloomed around the tea table.
“I had no idea you were such a witty person, Director. I always thought you were rather strict and solemn.”
Freesia offered a smile as she set her teacup down.
“I suppose I’ve only ever shown you a stiff impression. Since I must maintain a solemn demeanor within the library, my face tends to set firmly.”
William responded with a warm smile.
Right then, a sharp, cheerful knock rang out. When I opened the door, Sir Lloyd and Sir Gilbert of the Shadow Knights were standing there with playful grins.
Lloyd greeted me with a slightly casual posture.
“Congratulations on your promotion, Lord Chief Librarian.”
“There’s no need to force yourself to be polite, Sir Lloyd. However—”
Leaning against the doorframe, I flashed a wicked grin.
“You do know you have to show some sincerity if you want to step through this door, right?”
“Hey, I wasn’t born yesterday. Of course I know.”
Lloyd smirked knowingly, like a seasoned merchant.
Gilbert looked back and forth between Lloyd and me, visibly anxious.
“Wh-what is it? Do we have to pay a toll just to enter the office?”
Lloyd gave Gilbert a playful smack on the back of his head, looking exasperated.
“You zero-fun blockhead. Lady Erika is obviously joking.”
Lloyd held out what he had been hiding behind his back.
“This is Graffran wine. A highly precious vintage. Will this suffice as a token of my sincerity?”
The deep, brilliant color of the wine sloshed elegantly inside the glass bottle. I smiled with deep satisfaction and stepped aside from the doorway.
“Fufu, this is the most welcome gift yet. As expected, Sir Lloyd is the only one who truly understands my taste. Welcome, please come in.”
Only then did Gilbert look relieved, stepping tentatively into the office.
Lloyd strode in confidently, but upon spotting William and Freesia, he offered a smooth, polite greeting.
“The Director and Lady Rubel are here as well. Allow me to formally introduce myself. I am Lloyd from the exclusive knighthood of the House of Reinhardt. And this is our youngest, Gilbert.”
William welcomed them with a warm, amiable smile.
“Ah, the knights of Grand Duke Reinhardt. This is my first time meeting you in a private setting. It is a pleasure.”
Freesia also greeted them with a graceful smile befitting a noble lady.
“I have heard many rumors in the capital about the profound loyalty and exceptional swordsmanship of the House of Reinhardt’s knighthood. It is an honor to meet you.”
Come to think of it, this was the first time Freesia and William were meeting the Shadow Knights in a private capacity. I worried slightly that things might be awkward between them.
As if sensing my concern, Lloyd gave me a quick wink and patted his chest confidently, as if telling me to leave it all to him. I grinned back and flashed him a thumbs-up.
As expected of the mood maker. Truly reliable.
Lloyd looked around the room with a cheerful smile.
“I am utterly amazed by your incredible networking skills, Librarian. Thanks to you, I have the honor of attending a tea party with such distinguished individuals. As expected of the future Grand Duchess of Rein—”
Thwack!
I slammed a thick book right over Lloyd’s mouth. Lloyd blinked wildly in shock. Beside him, Gilbert flinched, his shoulders shuddering.
I forced a smile so wide the corners of my mouth twitched, though my eyes were glaring daggers at him.
“Oh dear, it seems a nasty pest was flying around.”
William merely lifted his teacup, a smooth, gentle smile remaining on his face.
“Sir Lloyd speaks the truth. Thanks to Librarian Erika, we are able to enjoy a precious time sharing tea with wonderful company.”
“Hahaha, isn’t that right, Director?”
Lloyd rubbed the back of his head with an awkward chuckle. When I removed the book, the area around his mouth was a bit flushed, making me feel a tiny bit guilty.
I soaked a handkerchief in cold water and handed it to Lloyd to use as a cold compress. At the same time, I sent a subtle warning message toward William.
“Please enjoy the tea party while it lasts. We have two more guests on their way. Though from your perspective, Director, they might be considered uninvited wedding crashers.”
“Wedding crashers… don’t tell me…”
William knitted his brows seriously, unable to bring himself to voice who it might be. Lloyd chimed in.
“I know who one of them is. His Grace the Grand Duke mentioned he would be stopping by as well.”
He glanced toward the door for a brief moment before flashing a meaningful grin.
“Before His Grace arrives, how about I share an entertaining anecdote about him?”
Classic mood maker.
Lloyd brought up a universal topic that absolutely everyone would enjoy. No matter the world, badmouthing the boss is the ultimate way to unite people.
William and Freesia nodded, their eyes sparkling with interest.
“Back when we were stationed at the border, our Grand Duke’s popularity absolutely pierced through the heavens.”
Lloyd began his tale with a dramatic flair.
“During the day, monsters would desperately charge at His Grace to kill him, and at night, the village maidens would swarm the barracks just to catch a single glimpse of his handsome face. Good grief, protecting His Grace from the ladies was honestly harder than fighting off the monsters.”
“My goodness, did such things really happen?”
Freesia widened her eyes, covering her mouth with her hands.
Lloyd shook his head side to side, looking as if he still got a headache just thinking about those times.
“I kid you not, one maiden was so bold that she actually sneaked into His Grace’s private quarters in the dead of night.”
“So, did she succeed?”
A daredevil brave enough to infiltrate Calix’s quarters? I swallowed hard, my eyes gleaming at the thrilling, suspenseful story.
Gilbert, who had been stealing glances at me, let out a disappointed sigh upon seeing my reaction.
“You seem far too amused by this. Even so, as the Grand Duke’s lady, you should…”
‘What on earth is this guy blabbing about in front of Freesia!’
With lightning speed, I shoved a cookie straight into Gilbert’s mouth.
“You simply must try this cookie. It is absolutely delicious.”
“Mph, mmmph…!”
“Hahaha, Grand Duke Reinhardt really behaves like a mere child when it comes to matters of women.”
William couldn’t wipe the smile off his face, clearly enjoying the gossip about his close friend.
Lloyd quickly shifted the topic as if a new thought had struck him.
“Oh right, when Lady Erika won the archery tournament, this fellow right here actually cried.”
Lloyd teased, elbowing Gilbert in the side. Gilbert’s face instantly flushed a bright crimson from embarrassment.
“I-I did not cry. Absolutely not! I was simply so deeply moved by how magnificently Lady Erika performed during the match that I…”
Seeing how pitifully flustered Gilbert looked, I decided to take his side.
“Well, it makes sense since Sir Gilbert was the instructor who personally taught me archery.”
Freesia clasped her hands together, looking at me with eyes full of deep admiration.
“I would love to see you shoot an arrow sometime, Erika. I bet you look incredibly cool.”
William also nodded curiously.
“Indeed. I would also love to witness it if the opportunity arises.”
Lloyd enthusiastically chimed in at his words.
“Man, you really should have seen that spectacular sight! When Lady Erika loosed those flaming arrows against the monsters, she looked precisely like the Goddess of War—so valiant and beautiful.”
Lloyd placed a hand over his chest, his expression turning solemn.
“I must confess, in that exact moment, I felt a sudden urge to dedicate everything I have to Lady Erika.”
“Sir Lloyd, don’t you already have a significant other?”
The moment I pierced right through to the core of the matter, Lloyd rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly.
“Well, I just meant the atmosphere at the time was like that. Hahaha.”
Gilbert, who had been sitting quietly with a bright red face, suddenly turned to look at me with fiercely determined eyes.
“I have wanted to say this to you for a very long time now. It may come as a sudden shock, but…”
A terrible premonition crept over me as Gilbert opened with such a heavy, dead-serious tone.
“If I may dare to request… might I serve you as my lady, Lady Erika? As a knight, I would gladly lay down my very life for you.”
Good grief, he startled me so badly I nearly dropped the precious teacup I was holding.
“Pardon? All of a sudden?”
‘Why are you being so intensely burdensome? In a dangerous world like this, everyone needs to look out for their own skin.’
Gilbert’s expression was far too earnest for me to reject him bluntly.
I cast desperate glances around the room, silently pleading for help, but it was entirely futile.
Lloyd was thoroughly enjoying the show as a spectator, while William merely muttered, “My, it seems I let my guard down,” his glasses gleaming sharply. Even Freesia was clasping her hands together with a deeply touched expression.
As I rolled my eyes, racking my brain for the most polite way to decline, Gilbert’s face suddenly drained of all color, turning stark white.
A heavy shadow loomed over me from behind. Even without turning around, I knew exactly who it was.
I recognized the owner of this crushing presence instantly.
A deep, low voice reverberated through the room.
“I’m afraid I cannot permit that.”
Dressed in a sleek, sharp-lined teal frock coat, Calix was glaring down at Gilbert with an icy, razor-sharp gaze.
Confronting the blade-like stare of his own lord, Gilbert froze completely, turning to stone.
From just behind Calix’s shoulder, Ludwig popped his face out with a mischievous smirk.
“Hey there, I can’t permit it either. If you want to become Erika’s knight, you’ll have to get in line.”
At the Crown Prince’s sudden entrance, everyone rose in unison to offer their formal bows and greetings.
As the owner of the office, I had no choice but to welcome the two crashers.
“Let me make one thing clear: I am perfectly capable of protecting my own body. So, please stop teasing Sir Gilbert, you two, and come on in.”
Before I knew it, my office had become as cramped and noisy as a bustling street market.
William and Gilbert—two large, broad-shouldered grown men—were sitting knee-to-knee on the two-seater couch.
Lloyd was leaning half-seated on the armrest of the sofa, committing the absolute atrocity of heavily pressing his weight onto Gilbert’s shoulder.
The remaining three armchairs were occupied by Freesia, the Crown Prince, and Calix respectively. Left without a place to sit, I hesitated for a moment…
Ludwig flashed a mesmerizing smile and lightly patted his own lap.
“Sit right here. I guarantee it’ll be comfortable.”
The exact instant the Crown Prince’s words left his mouth, William quietly stood up and plopped himself right down onto Ludwig’s lap.
“Then if you will excuse me, Your Highness.”
“Gah! William! Why are you sitting here?! You’re heavy, get off me!”
Everyone around them stared in utter shock, while Ludwig threw a fit, complaining about the weight.
Yet, the culprit himself, William, didn’t even blink an eye, remaining completely unbothered.
“Librarian Erika, please take my seat. You do not need to worry about me.”
‘Actually, it is incredibly distracting and incredibly burdensome.’
The sight of the Library Director sitting in perfect posture on the Crown Prince’s lap was a rare, priceless spectacle that money couldn’t buy.
Unable to bear watching the unsightly scene any longer, Calix effortlessly lifted my desk chair and set it down right in front of me.
“Sit here, Erika.”
“Thank you, Grand Duke.”
Once the commotion settled down, the guests enjoyed the warm tea in their respective seats, and peace was restored.
I noticed Freesia shyly holding her teacup while stealing cautious glances at Calix.
Right then, Ludwig scanned the tea table and clicked his tongue.
“I’ll have to send over a few more armchairs. There’s completely no room because you have so many guests.”
“Your Highness, this is a workspace, not a salon. Surely you aren’t planning to turn my office into your personal hideout, are you?”
“Hmm, well, depending on the circumstances, that might actually be a possibility.”
The Crown Prince shifted his gaze away with a playful grin.
In that instant, a sudden surge of homicidal intent washed over me. ‘Honestly, it feels like it would be much better if I became the leader of the rebellion forces instead of Franz.’
“The furniture I chose looks quite splendid in this office.”
The Crown Prince stroked his chin with a thoroughly satisfied expression, clearly proud of his own aesthetic taste.
Sitting beside me, Calix asked in a low voice.
“Is the desk comfortable to use?”
“Yes, thank you. I’m putting it to great use. Ah, but by the way, why is there a thick iron plate attached to the inside of the desk?”
While organizing the desk earlier, I had noticed a heavy iron plate bolted to the underside, and the memory suddenly prompted me to ask.
“It is designed so you can shield your body beneath the desk in the event of an enemy attack. There is also a hidden compartment in the lower section so you can conceal weapons.”
“Well… how incredibly convenient.”
It was a gift uniquely characteristic of Calix. The only issue was that I sincerely hoped I would never have to use those features in my entire life.
With Ludwig joining the tea party, the atmosphere grew lively and boisterous. He entertained everyone by sharing hidden scandals of high society and the secret gossip of the nobility.
An overly excited Lloyd shook the wine bottle he had brought as a gift.
“Since His Highness has joined us on such a wonderful day, shouldn’t we all share a toast?”
The Crown Prince immediately threw in his vote of approval.
“Aha! Sir Lloyd truly reads my mind perfectly.”
“Alcohol is strictly forbidden within the library premises, Your Highness.”
William firmly shut it down with an icy, unwavering expression.
Muttering under his breath about how disappointing it was that he couldn’t drink, Ludwig turned back toward me.
“By the way, Librarian Erika, how do you feel about your promotion?”
At the Crown Prince’s question, everyone’s gaze instantly converged on me, eager to hear my response.
“Pardon? Well, I don’t really know what to say…”
I paused for a moment, meeting the warm, reliable gazes of the people who believed in me.
Suddenly, the words Director William had spoken to me when I first arrived at the Royal Library flashed through my mind.
“I hope the Royal Library becomes a sturdy fence for you.”
William had been entirely right.
The people gathered in this room had already become my incredibly sturdy fence.
“I will work my absolute hardest with the sole goal of leaving work exactly on time.”
Feeling too shy to voice my true sentimental thoughts, I offered an awkward laugh and blurted out something entirely random instead.
Sharing the mutual perspective of fellow working-class employees, Lloyd and Gilbert enthusiastically clapped their hands in deep solidarity.
Sipping my tea awkwardly, I quietly observed Freesia’s expression.
Her violet eyes, filled with the fluttering excitement and nervousness of a young girl in the throes of a unrequited crush, were directed entirely toward Calix.
For Freesia, this was likely the first time she was seeing Calix since the jousting tournament.
Watching her dreamlike gaze, a corner of my heart twinged with a bittersweet ache.
Calix turned his head toward Freesia. Her shoulders tensed slightly, freezing up from nerves, and her delicate hands tightly gripped her teacup.
Calix’s calm, unblinking gaze passed right over Freesia without a single hint of emotion and came to a dead stop on me, right beside her.
“…You look cute.”
My heart leaped instantly. I was utterly flabbergasted by the sheer shamelessness of this male lead, who could utter such words with absolute gravity right in front of a crowd.
Rather than the startled looks of the people around us, Freesia’s gaze was the very first thing that caught my eye.
Finding it too painful to meet her trembling violet eyes, I let out a forced cough.
“Ahem, what on earth do you mean by that all of a sudden?”
Calix lowered his gaze, inspecting the fabric arm covers I was wearing.
“What is that thing on your arms? It suits you remarkably well.”
‘Why does he have to be so uselessly observant? He should save his sharp eye for something actually useful.’
Grumbling inwardly, I replied.
“These are arm covers meant for work. They’re designed to keep ink from staining my sleeves.”
Ludwig leaned slightly toward our side, cutting into the conversation.
“Hmm, I must agree with Grand Duke Calix. It matches your cute, lively aura perfectly, Librarian Erika.”
Even William, who had been quietly sipping his tea, added his thoughts.
“I also thought Librarian Erika looked quite adorable wearing those arm covers, but it seems I was a step too late.”
For some reason, Calix knitted his brows slightly as if something displeased him. He suddenly reached out, abruptly trying to pull the arm covers off my arms.
“Looking at it again, it looks tacky. Don’t wear it in front of others.”
“Pardon? Stop being so unreasonable. This is part of my official work attire!”
Because he had been behaving quite gentlemanly for a while, I thought he had changed a lot, but clearly, a person’s core nature doesn’t warp so easily.
Why was he picking a fight now after just calling it cute a second ago?
As I bickered back and forth with Calix over the arm covers, I snapped out of it and looked around the room.
Everyone was watching us with amusement, as if observing a pair of children having a petty squabble.
Beyond them, the sight of Freesia sitting in absolute silence pierced painfully into my retinas.
There she sat—a young girl with tear-rimmed, sorrowful eyes, harboring a love she could never voice.
Reflexively, I was about to call out to her, but William cleared his throat in a dignified manner.
“Regrettably, we must bring our tea time to a close here. It is time to commence our official business meeting.”
As if they had been waiting for the cue, the Shadow Knights were the very first to rise from their seats.
“Understood. Then we shall take our leave.”
“Thank you for the wonderful tea, Lady Erika. I committed many discourtesies today.”
Gilbert offered a bashful bow and turned away. Lloyd gave me a quick wink, whispering, “Next time, let’s grab a celebratory drink at the pub on me.”
Now, I needed to send Freesia off as well.
It weighed heavily on my mind to send her back all by herself. I turned to William, asking for a brief moment of indulgence.
“I’ll escort Lady Rubel down to the entrance hall and be right back. Would it be alright if we delayed the meeting just a tiny bit?”
“Of course. Take your time.”
Freesia offered an elegant, flawless curtsy to both the Crown Prince and Grand Duke Calix.
Her gaze chasing after Calix appeared feverish with love, yet heartbreakingly lonely at the same time.
It happened as we left the office and began heading down the stairs. Freesia, who had been walking ahead, turned back to look at me with an apologetic expression.
“You really didn’t have to walk me down, Erika. I know you’re busy.”
“There’s no way I could let you walk back entirely alone. Besides, you went out of your way to come celebrate with me today. Thank you.”
Freesia stopped in her tracks. She offered me a tender, radiant smile. There wasn’t a single trace left of the heartbroken girl from moments ago.
“As your friend, it is only natural that I rejoice in your good fortune. I had a truly wonderful time today as well. Thanks to you, I was able to share a delightful chat with such marvelous people.”
‘Why did the word ‘friend’ coming from her mouth feel so devastatingly heavy?’
When we finally reached the main entrance hall of the library, I found myself instinctively grasping Freesia’s hand.
Looking into her transparent, questioning eyes as she peeked up at me, a profound wave of guilt washed over my soul.
“Freesia, please feel free to drop by my office whenever you like. You can come relax anytime.”
“Thank you, but I wouldn’t want to disrupt your work.”
“Disrupt? Absolutely not. In fact, there is something important I wanted to ask of you. Would it be alright if I sent a formal letter to your estate?”
It was regarding the book club initiative I had discussed with the Queen.
Preparing a curriculum to educate young noble ladies was proving to be far too difficult to handle entirely on my own.
Freesia was one of the prime candidates I had in mind to help me execute the project.
Freesia’s eyes crinkled into beautiful crescents as she offered a soft, joyful smile.
“If it is a request from you, Erika, I will gladly do absolutely anything.”
Her unconditional kindness drove another needle of intense guilt deep into my chest.
‘Why am I doing absolutely nothing for Freesia’s sake? As the original female protagonist of this story, I should be helping her so she can end up together with Calix.’
But truth be told, I was in absolutely no position to run around playing Cupid for the main characters.
Though I had been promoted to Chief Librarian—or rather, precisely because I had been promoted—I still had to resolve the mystery of the magical grimoires and unmask Franz’s dark conspiracies.
Right now, there was nothing I could do for them.
I could only hope that the two of them would figure things out on their own. It wasn’t something a mere side character like me should meddle in.
As if cutting away the guilt that had taken deep root within my soul, I firmly drew a line in my heart.
