- Chapter 15 - The Grimoire Isn’t the Only Fake
When I stepped out of the conference hall, a grand, elongated marble corridor stretched out before me. It was a hallway adorned with towering arched ceilings and magnificent works of art.
In the corridor, nobles gathered here and there in small groups, engaged in heated conversations with hushed voices.
“Once the knight order is established, it is as clear as day that His Royal Highness the Crown Prince’s power will grow formidable.”
“It cannot be helped. We know not when the demonic beasts will emerge again. The safety of the capital comes first.”
“They are asking for funding and manpower support. My lords, how much are you all considering?”
‘Excuse me, noble sirs. I can hear everything. Everyone is making a fuss trying to put out the fire that has fallen on their own feet.’
Since I was known to be on the Crown Prince’s side, they all shut their mouths simultaneously as if by prior agreement when I walked past.
‘With the nobles watching so warily, it will be difficult to wait around in the corridor.’
Admiring the brilliant chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, I strolled further down the hallway.
I pondered the sense of déjà vu that had washed over me along with the words William had spoken to me, but honestly, I couldn’t wrap my head around it.
Perhaps it was just a mundane greeting. Maybe I was just being overly sensitive.
As I walked down the corridor, I spotted a slightly recessed space further inside. Beneath a painting depicting a beautiful palace garden lay a green velvet sofa.
It felt like discovering an oasis in the middle of a desert. I quickly ran over and plopped down on the sofa.
“Haa, I feel like I can finally breathe now. Ough, my whole body aches.”
Leaning back on the sofa, I stretched to loosen my stiff shoulder muscles and back.
My entire body had frozen up from sitting with my back rigidly straight throughout the entire meeting.
As I was practically lounging against the sofa, a dark shadow cast over me.
Inadvertently looking up, I saw Franz staring down at me intently with an amused glint in his eyes.
Though I didn’t care for it, I corrected my posture and lifted my chin haughtily.
“What brings you here, Grand Heir?”
‘How on earth did that white fox know I was here? I am truly exhausted; can’t we just pass each other by in silence?’
A shiver ran down my spine under his gaze, which slowly scanned me from head to toe.
“Lady Erika, I knew you would be safe, as expected. I am glad you look healthy.”
Franz smiled brightly like an innocent, beautiful boy. He was so breathtaking that even I, who knew his true colors, was momentarily captivated.
I wondered how many people he had seduced and ruined with that appearance. Just like the Erika in the original novel.
By the way, ‘that was a sarcastic jibe, wasn’t it?’
Suddenly, a surge of anger flared up within me, prompt me to question him sharply.
“Why did you give me that warning at the jousting arena? Did you perhaps know that the demonic beasts would appear?”
‘Did you plot this? Did I just dance to the tune of a playing field you created?’
He was the most likely culprit, yet the fact that I couldn’t even punish him due to the lack of clear physical evidence made me resentful and furious.
Franz said with a smirk, “Because I do not wish for what is mine to be broken.”
The moment I heard his words, I felt the nerves across my entire body rise in fury. An unknown power within me writhed like a massive serpent.
Grinding my teeth, I forced out each syllable with emphasis.
“You are gravely mistaken. I have never become yours, Grand Heir Schpern.”
Franz leaned down toward me. His forehead was so close it almost touched mine.
My head spun from the heavy, sweet scent of perfume that suddenly wafted over. Franz whispered into my ear as if murmuring sweet nothings.
“I am quite generous. I shall understand no matter who you play around with. After all, in the end, you will kneel before me and beg.”
“You must have eaten something wrong, Grand Heir. Seeing as you are speaking such nonsense.”
Though I mocked him with a twisted smirk, Franz did not even bat an eye. Rather, a flash of curiosity glinted in his violet eyes.
“What a pity. I wished to see the scene of you fighting the demonic beasts while firing flaming arrows. Everyone praised you, saying you looked like a beautiful and fierce goddess of war.”
He grabbed my wrist and lifted it. I could not easily shake off his grip; it was hard to tell where such strength came from in that gaunt hand.
He examined my hand meticulously, as if appreciating a work of art.
“So you killed a demonic beast with this hand. It is regrettable that I could not see you slaughtering the beast and staining yourself with blood. Make sure to show me next time, right in front of me.”
‘What a crazy psycho.’
I shook off his hand with all my might. I barely managed to suppress the anger that threatened to burst forth like sparks.
“I’m warning you. Next time, that arrow might be aimed at you, Grand Heir.”
Franz merely gazed at me intently without making a single movement. Just as I was about to snap out of my seat and stand up, he heavily pressed down on my shoulder and forced my chin up.
Before I could even find a chance to counter, his rose-colored lips drew close.
Franz’s lips stopped at a precarious distance, leaving no room to escape.
Staring daggers at him without blinking even once, I clenched my jaw tightly. Like a beast cornered in a dead end preparing for a counterattack.
Reflected like a mirror in his amethyst eyes was Erika’s face, entirely consumed by hostility. The woman who had loved Franz more than life itself in the original novel was not me.
The corners of Franz’s lips contorted into a smirk.
“My, if I were to kiss you, I might get bitten to pieces.”
He took a handful of my long hair and pressed his lips to it gently.
And then, he looked at me with eyes that conveyed an obsessive desire for exclusive possession.
“Every single strand of your hair belongs to me. Therefore, you must live for my sake, Lady Erika.”
My breath hitched. It felt as though what he was holding onto was not my hair, but my lifeline.
‘Are you saying that no matter how much I struggle, I am still in the exact same place? That I am ultimately your puppet?’
A mixture of despair and wrath made me feel as if my head would explode. Rational thought became impossible.
Grinding my teeth tightly, I pushed his shoulders back forcefully.
“Stop joking around.”
Exasperatingly, Franz stepped backward as if intentionally letting me win. He then placed a hand over his chest and bowed elegantly.
“I shall look forward to the day we meet again, my lady.”
He disappeared down the corridor. Toward his retreating figure, I screamed silently with malice.
‘If only this place weren’t the royal palace!’
“It was awful meeting you, and let us never see each other again, even in hell! You bastard!”
Griping the armrest of the couch as if to break it, I struggled to calm my ragged breathing.
A buzzing sound rang in my head. It was the sound of my heart beating frantically.
With just a few words, Franz had mocked me and tried to manipulate me like a puppet. So easily.
That fact made me incredibly resentful, and at the same time, terrified. I felt helpless, as if pressed down by a massive, solid boulder.
‘I should have just bitten his ear off instead.’
Closing my eyes, I slowly regulated my breathing.
Beyond the darkness, a yellow light appeared. Like the exit of a pitch-black tunnel.
Strangely, upon seeing that light, my boiling insides calmed down serenely. The anger, fear, and helplessness all vanished.
The light slowly blinked and locked eyes with me.
That was… the eye of the demonic beast.
‘Why on earth am I thinking of that dying demonic beast at a time like this?’
The beast spoke to me. No, it had been speaking to me from the very moment it first saw me. However, I still could not understand what it was trying to say.
“What on earth do you want from me? Why do you appear every time I am confused and suffering, every time I loathe my helpless self and want to grasp at even a straw of power?”
Once again, I felt a powerful strength writhing beneath my skin. It felt as if an unmanageable power lay coiled and lurking within.
As time passed, that colossal power felt more and more distinct.
It was so tempting that I found myself wishing to possess it.
To reach out my hand and make it mine.
“Erika? What is the matter?”
From beyond the darkness, a voice descended like a ray of light. A deeply familiar, low yet gentle and earnest voice.
My vision was filled with Calix’s face, which was visibly fraught with worry. He was holding my shoulders gently, peering down at me.
“Your complexion looks poor. Are you alright?”
“…It is you, Your Grace.”
“You require recovery magic. I shall fetch William at once.”
Calix turned urgently, looking ready to hunt down William this very second. On impulse, I tightly grabbed his hand.
“No. I am fine. I was just resting for a moment.”
I could not bring myself to confess what had happened with Franz. It would be troublesome if a war between the two families broke out within the royal palace.
Having his hand caught by me, Calix froze like a paused screen. He stared intently down at my hand, which was barely managing to hold onto his large one.
“This is the first time…”
“Yes? What is?”
“That you have taken my hand.”
Startled by his serious tone, as if this were a matter of utmost importance, I tried to pull my hand away, but—
“Do not let go.”
Calix swiftly and firmly intercepted my action.
“Pardon? Ah, yes…”
As if drawn in by his command, I ended up holding his hand once more.
With me sitting on the sofa and Calix standing before me, holding hands while staring at each other…
‘People might misunderstand and think we are engaging in an amorous display in the royal palace.’
Though it was an awkward form of physical contact to even call it that.
However, it did not matter.
The solid strength and warm tenderness felt from his hand caused the anxiety, anger, and helplessness from moments ago to melt away.
Before me stood only the upright and formidable dark-haired knight.
Feeling a sudden, childish urge to act pampered, I offered him a faint smile.
“I think I understand why Your Grace dislikes coming to the royal palace. It really is a place that drains one’s energy. Let us return to the ducal mansion quickly. Lord Michael must be waiting.”
Calix paused for a moment. His deep, beautiful eyes slowly crinkled. It was a gentle eye-smile reminiscent of a warm spring day.
“I am pleased to be able to return together with you.”
The sight was so lovely that I could not take my eyes off him.
“Librarian Erika, those words wound me. Do you truly dislike the royal palace that much?”
Unnoticed until now, the Crown Prince was leaning against the wall, flashing a lax smile.
“I have been curious for a moment now, but why are you two merely holding hands as if playing a children’s house game?”
Belatedly startled, I quickly flung Calix’s hand away.
At my rapid detachment, a flicker of instability passed through Calix’s gaze. He looked somewhat like a child who had lost his mother’s hand.
‘Why does it feel like I am the one who committed a wrongdoing?’
“I felt a bit dizzy. His Grace was merely supporting me.”
“As expected, attending the state council meeting was too much for you. You should have spoken up sooner. You would feel better if you were held within my warm and broad embrace.”
Ludwig opened his arms wide, confidently tapping his chest.
‘Where did the charismatic Crown Prince from the conference hall go, leaving only a flirtatious scoundrel here?’
“I shall decline.”
Calix stepped forward by one pace as if to shield me.
“Librarian Erika has been overworking herself since last night and requires rest. I, too, shall take my leave now.”
A powerful determination that tolerated no refusal could be felt from his stern expression. I was genuinely impressed.
‘As expected of Calix. To boldly make a declaration of his conviction to leave work on time.’
However, the Crown Prince was an equally formidable, sly fox.
“What is the rush? It is not as if demonic beasts have emerged again. It has been a while since you came to the palace, so stay a bit longer and play. And shouldn’t we celebrate today’s victory?”
Smiling from ear to ear, the Crown Prince mimicked the motion of popping a cork from a wine bottle.
‘That is a textbook statement from a company CEO. The type who insists on having a team dinner whenever something happens.’
Calix’s expression grew rapidly frigid.
“Strictly speaking, it would be Your Highness’s victory alone. Do you have any idea how complicated the preparation process is, such as securing the budget for establishing the knight order, expanding personnel, and formulating training plans? Ultimately, the aftermath is a burden left to William and me.”
“Hear, hear!”
I cheered inwardly in agreement.
‘The Crown Prince gets to do all the charismatic and cool things by himself, while his subordinates have to shoulder the mountain of work.’
Perhaps possessing a shred of conscience, the Crown Prince tapped Calix on the shoulder with an embarrassed look.
“That is why I always trust and rely on you all. You know how I feel, right?”
Calix coldly brushed the Crown Prince’s hand away.
“I care not to know.”
“Oh come now, look at you. You were the one who first proposed establishing a knight order, My Lord.”
Calix’s brow furrowed once more.
‘A wrinkle might form on that handsome face at this rate. Though he would still look handsome even with wrinkles.’
“I proposed that an elite knight order was necessary to prepare for it, given the possibility that demonic beast appearances may become frequent in the future. However…”
Calix suddenly ceased speaking and gazed at the Crown Prince with a serious look. His cobalt-blue eyes curved softly.
“Utilizing that appropriately to secure Your Highness’s political power was a magnificent maneuver.”
‘Good heavens, for the proud and arrogant Calix to praise the Crown Prince. Isn’t this the first time?’
Ludwig also seemed astonished, his eyes widening. Caught off guard by the unexpected compliment, an embarrassed expression surfaced on his face.
“Uh, ahem. I knew not that you respected and admired me to this extent, My Lord.”
“Do not overinterpret. It is merely my opinion on today’s state council meeting.”
Calix drew a firm line with a straight face.
‘Geez, he could have just given a refreshing compliment. Why must he be so uptight?’
Adopting a customer-centric mindset as much as possible, I flashed a bright smile and held up two thumbs-up.
“Your Highness, you were truly magnificent today! For the first time, I actually felt that Your Highness belongs to the royalty.”
“Mm, thank you for the compliment, but what exactly have you been viewing me as all this time?”
Ludwig grumbled, puckering his brow. Calix slightly turned his head away, but it was completely obvious that he was forcing back a laugh.
“Your Highness, how about celebrating the victory next time? The Director is busy today as well.”
“That is true. Since we must also hold a promotion party for Librarian Erika, I shall have to arrange an appointment later.”
‘Ah, I did get promoted.’
Franz had truly made me lose my wits.
“By the way, you mentioned it is your first time coming to the royal palace, right? Since you showed me your hideout in the library, I shall show you my hideout this time. Aren’t you looking forward to it?”
Ludwig wore an expression resembling a seven-year-old child eager to show off his toys. I openly displayed my profound discomfort.
“That feels rather unfair.”
“Why is that?”
“Your Highness drank tea, slept, and hung around in my hideout, yet I am only permitted to tour Your Highness’s hideout.”
“Hmm, now that I hear it, you have a point.”
Ludwig stroked his chin as if pondering deeply, then snapped his fingers as something came to mind.
“Aha! If you become my exclusive librarian, you can freely roam anywhere in the royal palace. Then you can similarly drink tea, take naps, and hang around in my hideout.”
A genuine sigh escaped my lips. I abruptly stood up from the couch and gave the Crown Prince a stiff 90-degree bow.
“Then, I shall clock out now. Thank you for your hard work, Your Royal Highness.”
Before I could be held back, I walked briskly out into the corridor. Calix kept pace behind me, and the Crown Prince pursued us with quick steps.
“Erika, this is an order! Stop.”
Unbelievable. He was really using the royal-command cheat code here.
‘Because I’m apparently the type who obeys whenever ordered…’
“Yes, yes. Did you call for me, Your Royal Highness?”
‘…and knows how to exploit rank perfectly. Yes, Head Librarian reporting in.’
I turned back to face the Crown Prince with a sour expression. He flinched slightly at my distorted face, but soon flashed a radiant smile.
“I forgot to convey these words. Her Majesty the Queen wishes to meet you. Both Librarian Erika and Duke Reinhardt.”
“Her Majesty the Queen wants to see me? Why?”
Utterly shocked, I turned to look at Calix. He also looked perplexed, as if this were entirely unexpected.
It made sense for Calix, but why me?
***
The Queen’s Palace was a building with a serene atmosphere, located in the deepest quarters of the royal palace.
Following behind the Crown Prince, we passed through three cloisters and headed toward a brilliantly engraved iron gate. When we stepped beyond the gate, I found myself struck with awe, losing myself in admiration.
“Ah… What a truly beautiful place.”
A garden lay before us, where colorful, brilliant roses bloomed in profusion. A sweet and rich scent of roses carried over with the breeze.
Water flowed incessantly from the fountain in the central garden. The spray of water glinted blindingly as it reflected the sunlight.
However, the gaze Ludwig directed at the garden appeared somewhat lonely.
“It is also the sole sanctuary that comforts Her Majesty the Queen’s heart.”
I couldn’t bring myself to ask why, but I could guess the general reason.
According to the original novel, the Queen fell into profound grief after losing Crown Prince Richard to a demonic beast attack seven years ago. Since then, she performed only the bare minimum duties as the Queen and mostly remained secluded within the Queen’s Palace.
Ludwig halted his steps and cast a warm gaze toward Calix.
“Calix. Do you recall coming here to play during our childhood?”
Calix slowly scanned the rose garden for a moment. A distant yearning for his youth bled through his gaze.
“Yes. I remember. This place… remains as invariably beautiful as always.”
“It seems Your Grace visited the Queen’s Palace frequently?”
At my question, Calix calmly shared his tale.
“That is correct. I often entered the palace following my father or my aunt. I would attend tea parties held in the Queen’s Palace garden and act as a conversational partner for His Highness.”
“Ah, did the swordsmanship sparring match you mentioned before perhaps take place here as well?”
I recalled the bickering that had occurred in the library regarding the outcome of the sparring match between Ludwig and Calix when they were young.
“The match that concluded with my victory? If you wish, I can recount it to you in vivid detail, Librarian Erika.”
The sharp-eared Crown Prince quickly interjected. Of course, I declined with a smile.
“I need not hear it to know. The friendship between you two began in this garden. It must be a place filled with precious memories.”
Calix’s gaze turned menacing. It was a gaze entirely unsuited for a peaceful garden.
“I would prefer to call it the beginning of an ill fated relationship.”
Ludwig smiled leisurely, then plucked a brilliant red rose.
“Then, shall we liquidate the ill fate and begin a new relationship here?”
The Crown Prince tucked the rose behind my right ear.
The heavily wafting, sweet scent made my heart flutter.
‘Why does this bring to mind the red rose Calix had tucked behind my ear in the garden of the Reinhardt ducal mansion?’
Calix’s countenance darkened. He, too, plucked a beautiful pink rose from a climbing rose arch and marched toward me without hesitation.
‘What is with these men? Are they competing? Exactly what are they doing?’
“I am fine. Placing Your Grace’s flower on my head as well is a bit…!”
Though I politely declined, Calix’s movements were faster. He tucked the rose behind my left ear.
Even without looking in a mirror, I knew exactly how I looked.
‘An odd woman with flowers on both sides of her head…!’
Embarrassed and flushed with irritation, I glared as the two men admired the roses placed on my head with satisfied expressions. It only made me more exasperated.
“Is it not against etiquette to appear before Her Majesty the Queen in this state?”
Ludwig shook his head with a gratified expression.
“It is perfectly fine. It enhances your beauty further. Moreover, the meaning of that flower represents you and I…”
The Crown Prince ceased speaking mid-sentence and shifted his gaze to Calix. As his gaze sharpened like a sword, Ludwig laughed like a mischievous boy.
“And it symbolizes the beautiful friendship among the three of us, including Duke Reinhardt.”
“Pardon me for interrupting, but when exactly did I swear such a beautiful friendship with Your Royal Highness?”
When I pressed him with a suspicious glare, Ludwig widened his eyes.
“You know it without it being spoken, do you not? Are we not connected through our hearts?”
‘Hah, I have much to say, but… let us stop.’
I took a deep sigh and took the lead.
“Let us hurry. Her Majesty the Queen must be waiting.”
At that, the Crown Prince stepped close to my right side and offered his arm.
“Escorting a lady is the duty of a gentleman, after all.”
When I glared at him as if to ask what he was doing, he signaled with his eyes for me to link arms.
“Calix, you as well.”
The Crown Prince urged Calix too.
‘Surely, he isn’t telling Calix to link arms with him?’
Calix quietly approached my left side and offered his arm with an awkward and rigid motion.
A laugh escaped me at his stiff posture.
‘You have never escorted a lady before, have you? As expected of the pure and noble Duke.’
Scenes in dramas or novels where the male lead tells the female lead to link arms usually look dashing.
‘Why does linking arms with these two men feel so childish?’
It felt like younger brothers who fought constantly throwing a tantrum for me to hold their hands.
‘Then again, who else would look after these immature, oversized men?’
With the mindset of an older sister taking care of troublesome younger brothers, I firmly linked arms with Calix and Ludwig.
“Gentlemen, let us proceed. I shall do the escorting.”
With a flower in each hand—or rather, the Crown Prince and the Northern Duke—I truly felt like a protagonist.
And with vigor, I led the two men, briskly striding across the garden of the Queen’s Palace.
***
Beyond the splendid rosebeds stood a pure white canopy. The snow-white domed roof harmonized beautifully with the red rose vines that coiled tightly around its pillars.
The maids waiting in front of the canopy bowed politely as we approached. Feeling embarrassed to be seen by them in such a state, I quickly unlinked my arms from the two men.
“Welcome. Her Majesty the Queen is waiting for you. Please, step inside.”
As we walked in, the first thing that caught my eye was an elegant, stately tea table.
Upon the dazzlingly white table, a magnificent centerpiece composed of blue hydrangeas and white roses was splendidly displayed. The refined silverware and teapot were marvelous works of art in their own right, intricately engraved with beautiful rose motifs.
Beyond the table sat a noble lady dressed in a serene, light blue gown, her reddish hair swept up gracefully. She was gazing out at the flower garden with a contemplative look on her face.
Sensing our presence, the lady slowly turned her head. It was Queen Artesia of the Kingdom of Ruberia.
She was a person from whom the dignity of the nation’s mother naturally exuded. Even without her identity being explicitly stated, she possessed an aura that commanded instinctual reverence. The faint lines etched around her eyes and the corners of her mouth spoke of her years and wisdom, only serving to enhance her gentle beauty.
“It is a pleasure to meet you. I have been waiting. Duke Reinhardt, Lady Diel.”
The Queen’s voice was calm yet soft, instantly putting one at ease.
“Erika Diel greets Her Majesty the Queen. Thank you for inviting me.”
Struggling not to let my nervousness show, I curtsied in strict accordance with royal etiquette. Calix also offered a courteous greeting to the Queen.
Ludwig kissed the back of the Queen’s hand, offering a tender eye-smile.
“Mother, your beauty blooms more magnificently by the day, much like these roses.”
At the Crown Prince’s compliment, the Queen covered her mouth slightly and smiled like a young girl.
“Our Crown Prince’s flattery grows more skillful by the day as well. Still, it is pleasant to hear.”
Ludwig took a seat beside the Queen, while Calix and I sat opposite them. When a maid stepped forward to pour the tea, the Crown Prince raised a hand to stop her.
“I would like to personally serve the tea today, as it has been a while.”
“The Crown Prince’s tea always possesses a refined taste. I shall leave it to you then,” the Queen responded pleasantly.
With practiced dexterity, the Crown Prince steeped the tea leaves, brewing a fragrant blend. He poured the tea into the Queen’s cup first, then offered it to Calix and me.
My hands trembled slightly as I lifted the silver teacup before me. It was an opulent cup, rimmed with gold leaf and featuring a golden lion emblem intricately carved onto its handle.
‘If I happen to break this, I’ll probably have to pay an astronomical amount in damages, right?’
I carefully raised the cup and took a small sip. The warm tea, infused with subtle hints of floral and fruity aromas, instantly soothed my nerves.
With a gentle smile, the Queen set her teacup down. Her gaze shifted toward me.
“Is this our first time greeting each other like this, Lady Diel?”
“Yes. It is an honor to be invited, Your Majesty,” I replied politely, recalling the palace etiquette I had briefly read about in books. Perhaps because of my nervousness, my tone turned rigid and my expression stiffened.
Observing my tense demeanor closely, the Queen spoke kindly.
“Do not be nervous; make yourself at comfortable. I invited you here merely to admire this beautiful garden together and chat about mundane affairs. Drinking tea while looking at flowers with pleasant company is one of my small joys in life.”
“Your Majesty is truly the most beautiful flower in this entire garden,” the Crown Prince interjected, his eyes gleaming with earnestness.
“Oh dear, you are teasing your mother. Is the Crown Prince himself not famous for being the flower of high society?”
At the Queen’s sharp retort, Ludwig’s expression deflated like a scolded child. Seeing this, a amused smile spread across the Queen’s face.
“Fret not, I was merely jesting.”
Only then did Ludwig’s expression return to normal, looking relieved.
Watching the warm, unreserved banter between mother and son brought a natural smile to my lips. However, realizing it might be impolite, I quickly cleared my throat to mask my expression.
The Queen fixed her gaze on me and spoke in a calm manner.
“Sir Calix is well aware, but you may not know, Lady Diel. Do you know why the Crown Prince is so active that he is referred to as the flower of high society?”
“I am not entirely certain, Your Majesty.”
The Queen took a sip of her tea before continuing.
“After His Majesty the King collapsed due to illness, my own health deteriorated, preventing me from engaging in public affairs. Holding the position of the nation’s mother, my heart was always heavy with the knowledge that I could not fulfill my duties to care for the kingdom. His Highness stepped up to lead and fill that void all on his own.”
It was a completely unexpected revelation. In the original novel, he was depicted as a profligate crown prince who frequented high society, squandering wealth on luxurious parties within the palace.
Yet the reality was that he had been striving to manage the opinions of the nobility and demonstrate the prestige and survival of the royal family on behalf of the King and Queen, who were paralyzed by grief and illness.
I found myself seeing Ludwig in a completely new light.
“You praise me too highly, Your Majesty,” Ludwig replied quietly, a faint blush dusting his cheeks.
The usual Crown Prince would have bragged and shown off, but before the Queen, he was nothing but a calm, dutiful, and devoted son. The novelty of his unfamiliar side kept drawing my eyes back to him.
The Queen’s gentle gaze lingered on the roses pinned to my head.
“The roses decorating your hair are truly lovely.”
“Thank you, Your Majesty.”
“They are the roses from my garden. To present a lady with flowers for her hair—he certainly understands romance.”
‘Oh gosh, was it forbidden to carelessly pluck flowers from the Queen’s Palace garden?’
Cold sweat began to break out, and I didn’t know where to look.
The Queen tapped her chin with her finger, appearing deep in thought.
“Two roses possessing contrasting charms. A red rose embodying fierce passion, and an elegant, delicate pink rose… They were not chosen by a single person, were they?”
“Pardon? Ah, this is…”
I was left entirely speechless by the Queen’s sharp deduction, which rivaled that of a master detective. The actual culprits, Ludwig and Calix, simultaneously looked away, feigning innocence.
‘They only coordinate well at times like this. They truly are childhood friends.’
The Queen observed me intently, a glint of amusement in her eyes.
“I am curious. Two roses of different charms. Two hearts. Which flower commands your heart?”
Startled by the question, I inadvertently set my teacup down onto the saucer with too much force.
Clink.
The sharp, clear sound of porcelain striking porcelain echoed through the air.
The gazes of Ludwig and Calix converged on me, as if they too were eagerly awaiting my answer. A heavy silence descended upon the table. You could have heard a pin drop.
‘Asking me to choose between the Crown Prince and the Duke? Right in front of them?’
The Queen urged me on with a serene smile.
“Go on.”
It was a soft but piercing question. Was the Queen worried that I might hold feelings for the Crown Prince? Of course, she didn’t need to harbor even a speck of such worry. Still, I couldn’t exactly choose Calix’s flower in this situation either.
With no other options left… I met the Queen’s blue eyes directly for the first time. Though it might not entirely conform to royal etiquette, I wished to carry myself authentically.
“I shall choose neither flower.”
“And why is that?” the Queen inquired, looking intrigued. I offered her a bright smile.
“Because I like myself the best.”
A look of surprise crossed the Queen’s face, which quickly melted into a soft, admiring laugh. Hearing her laughter, Ludwig’s expression brightened like a child’s.
“Indeed, the rumors floating around the capital regarding you are no exaggeration.”
“Forgive me, but what rumors do you speak of, Your Majesty?”
“The brave, wise, and fierce goddess of war, Erika Diel.”
‘No, why is that embarrassing dark history being brought up here of all places?!’
Too embarrassed to lift my head, I gripped my cooled teacup as if it were a lifeline.
“I heard that when the demonic beasts emerged at the jousting arena, you fought back and rescued the people. I was deeply moved by your courage, Lady Diel.”
“Th-thank you, Your Majesty.”
“When did you learn archery? I heard you are a librarian at the Royal Library; it must not have been easy to train while working.”
“I learned from a knight of the Reinhardt Ducal Mansion. I have been consistently practicing archery every day after arriving at work.”
I answered the Queen’s questions calmly.
“Remarkable. When you faced the demonic beast… were you not afraid?”
The Queen’s tone, though gentle, carried a heavy undertone of sorrow as she forced the question out. I worried that it might be triggering the trauma of a mother who had lost her son seven years ago. Carefully organizing my thoughts, I opened my mouth to speak.
“To be completely honest, I was terrified. I wanted nothing more than to turn and run.”
“So… you felt that way too.”
“Yes. However…”
I briefly shifted my gaze to Calix. His calm eyes met mine without a single tremor. Strangely, just looking at him made my tension and trembling cease, allowing me to return to my true self.
“There was someone precious to me whom I wanted to protect. That was how I found the courage.”
A gentle ripple passed through the Queen’s emerald eyes. She closed her eyes softly and nodded her head.
“You speak the truth. Anyone would find the courage to risk their life for the sake of the one they love.”
The Queen rang a small bell to summon a maid. The maid brought forward a painting encased in an ornate frame. Smiling, the Queen pointed toward it.
“This is the painting that has been providing me with solace lately.”
“…!”
I nearly spat out my tea.
It was a painting of me. It depicted a goddess of war rendered in a far more splendid and grand style than the drawings held by the cheering crowds outside the library. It looked like something a renowned artist would paint for a masterpiece depicting the creation of heaven and earth.
‘How on earth is this more photoshopped and beautified than modern digital editing?’
And more importantly, ‘why is a painting like that in Her Majesty’s possession?!’
I shot a resentful, glaring look toward the Crown Prince—or rather, I lightly cut my eyes at him, since I couldn’t actually look ready to murder him.
“Your Majesty, that painting is far too exaggerated. It bears no resemblance to me, and I am deeply apologetic.”
However, the Queen shook her head with a gentle smile.
“This painting beautifully captures your courage and wisdom. A truly authentic painting is meant to depict inner strength and beauty, rather than mere outward appearances.”
Her clear, virtuous eyes gazed straight at me.
“The people of Ruberia have suffered under the terror of demonic beasts for a very long time. While vigilance against danger is necessary, excessive fear eats away at the soul. I have always worried about that.”
She tilted her head slightly.
“Yet, you planted the courage to drive out that fear within the hearts of the citizens. Did you know that learning self-defense martial arts is currently a massive trend among the populace? And that the most popular discipline is archery?”
A smile graced her serious face once more—a genuine, joyful smile.
“In an unprecedented situation where demonic beasts appeared in the capital, the citizens overcame their terror and found something they could do through their own strength.”
The Queen bowed her head slightly toward me.
“As the Queen of this nation, I offer you my gratitude for your courage.”
It was a deeply heartfelt gesture. Overwhelmed and incredibly grateful, I lowered my head deeply in return, feeling my cheeks flush crimson in an instant.
“Not at all, Your Majesty. I simply did what needed to be done.”
Ludwig, who had been listening quietly, stepped in with a laugh.
“Your Majesty, if you praise her any further, Lady Diel’s face is going to completely cook through.”
“Oh dear, it seems I have made things difficult for you. Come, let us drink our tea.”
Only then did I breathe a sigh of relief internally and take a sip of my tea.
As I lowered my cup, I felt Calix’s gaze fixed intently upon me. His eyes were brimming with immense pride; it was entirely obvious from his expression how proud he was of me. Feeling burdened and shy under his stare, I averted my eyes, only to lock gazes with the Crown Prince this time.
Ludwig was grinning like an absolute fool, looking as if he was dying to brag about me himself.
‘Seriously, what is up with these men? And right in front of the Queen, no less.’
A brief silence ensued as each of us savored the aromatic tea. Suddenly, the Queen turned to Calix to ask after him.
“Sir Calix, thank you for assisting the Crown Prince so wholeheartedly in both material and spiritual matters. I wished to see your face as well, which is why I summoned you together.”
“I am deeply apologetic for not visiting more frequently, Your Majesty.”
“You are busy handling state affairs on behalf of the Crown Prince; how could I demand you to come? Instead, Countess Demeter enters the palace frequently to keep me company.”
“Is that so.” Calix nodded with a soft smile.
The Queen looked back and forth between Calix and the Crown Prince, amusement dancing in her eyes.
“Do you know what Countess Demeter’s greatest concern is these days?”
“Pardon? What might that be?” Calix countered, his eyes widening slightly.
“It is the matter of the Duke’s marriage. You have reached marriageable age, yet hold no intention of taking a companion, so the Countess’ worry can only grow. Of course, I share the same sentiment. It is quite a problem that the Crown Prince also possesses absolutely no desire to take a crown princess.”
The Queen directed a pointed look at Ludwig. Ludwig merely offered an awkward laugh, looking desperately eager to escape the situation.
“By chance, My Lord, is there a lady who has caught your eye? If you wish, I would be more than happy to personally arrange an introduction.”
At the Queen’s proposal, the gazes of both Calix and Ludwig snapped toward me simultaneously.
‘Why me again? Anyone watching would think this is a love triangle.’
Acting as naturally as possible, I leaned back slightly, moving my chair away. With me stepping back, the gazes of the Crown Prince and the Duke clashed in midair. Their expressions stiffened before they swiftly averted their eyes.
Calix cleared his throat, offering a polite refusal.
“I am grateful for your words, but I do not believe it is the time to decide upon marriage just yet.”
“If you ever desire it, the royal family will support you with all our resources, so feel free to seek me out anytime.”
“Thank you for your deep consideration, Your Majesty.”
The Queen gazed quietly at Calix. Her eyes held a warm affection, reminiscent of a mother looking at a son who had grown into a fine man.
“Your loyalty and devotion are always remembered deep within my heart. Next time, bring Michael to the palace as well. I miss that child’s angelic smile.”
At the mention of the lovely Michael, the tension visibly drained from Calix. The Queen gently placed her hand over the back of Calix’s hand—a gesture overflowing with maternal affection.
“You were incredibly adorable when you were young as well, My Lord. It feels like just yesterday you would come to the palace and run around the rose garden… It is wonderful to see your face like this. Please visit more often in the future.”
Calix, who had maintained the rigid expression of a subject, softened into a genuinely relaxed smile for the first time.
A tender atmosphere, akin to that of a mother and child, wrapped around the Queen and Calix as they exchanged looks. Ludwig watched the scene with a gratified expression.
Taking advantage of this moment, I leaned toward Ludwig and asked something I had been highly curious about.
“Your Royal Highness, I have something to ask.”
“I shall gladly answer any question of yours.”
‘Even in front of Her Majesty the Queen, this immature Crown Prince is still flashing me greasy smiles.’
Though slightly embarrassed, my curiosity won out, and I whispered quietly while keeping an eye on Calix.
“I heard that when the Duke visited the royal palace during his childhood, the noble ladies doted on him excessively. Is that true?”
I recalled what Sir Lloyd had told me a while back. He said the reason Calix avoided high society was because he had received ‘excessive’ affection at the palace as a child, and the trauma made him avoid places filled with women.
I was absolutely dying to know exactly what kind of affection he had received. It definitely wasn’t because I had wagered a silver coin with Sir Lloyd.
Though I lowered my voice to a whisper, it was entirely useless against Calix’s sharp hearing. His expression hardened instantly. Or had he turned pale?
“Th-that is, hahahaha!”
The moment he heard my question, Ludwig burst into laughter. To me, who was left completely bewildered, the Queen kindly offered the answer instead.
“Ah, you speak of ‘Cali.’ He was a truly darling child.” The Queen smiled happily, reminiscing about the fond memory.
“Forgive me, Your Majesty, but who is Cali?”
“Cali was the childhood nickname given to Duke Reinhardt. It was bestowed upon him by the noble ladies who frequented the palace back then.”
“Isn’t Cali a girl’s name?”
“Fret not, the Duke was as beautiful and quiet as a doll when he was young. One could easily mistake him for a young girl. So, every time the Duke came to the palace to play, the noble ladies would dress him up in gowns, call him Cali, and play with him during tea parties. That darling and cute appearance is still vivid in my mind.” The Queen sighed wistfully, placing a hand against her cheek.
“Ah, so such a thing occurred…”
Ludwig was practically breathless from laughing so hard, while Calix hung his head like a defeated general on a battlefield.
‘Good heavens, for that arrogant and cold-blooded Duke to be called Cali and doted upon like that as a child.’
It truly was a legendary dark history. How utterly humil—er, distressing and embarrassing it must have been. I could completely empathize with and understand his wretched feelings. But putting that aside…
I turned my head and inquired in a covert whisper to the Queen.
“By chance, does a portrait of Cali exist?”
“Regrettably, no. Cali refused so vehemently.”
Smiting my knee in sheer disappointment, I let out a groan. “Ah! What an absolute shame. I wanted to see it so badly!”
Of course, Calix shot me a terrifying glare, his eyes flashing with a menacing blue light.
“Hahaha! As expected of Librarian Erika. To extract the tale of Cali right here. That topic was strictly forbidden.” Ludwig clutched his stomach, roaring with laughter. Honestly, I wanted to join in, but out of mindfulness toward Calix, I merely kept sipping my tea.
Once the childhood reminiscing—which had been delightful for everyone except one specific individual—concluded, the Queen steered the conversation to a new topic.
“Lady Diel, is your work as a librarian not difficult?”
I straightened my posture and nodded seriously.
“No. I thoroughly enjoy my work.”
“I heard previously that the Crown Prince frequented the Royal Library to conduct state research. You must have gone through much trouble assisting His Highness back then.”
‘State research, my foot.’
Flashbacks of tea parties, reading romance and adventure novels, and him napping in my hideout flashed before my eyes like a kaleidoscope, but I maintained a thoroughly professional smile.
“Not at all. I merely fulfilled my duties as a librarian.”
The Queen directed a proud look toward the Crown Prince.
“I heard that His Highness has changed beyond recognition since he started frequenting the Royal Library. I am told he has reduced his meetings with young ladies and hunting trips with young nobles, and now actively participates in the state council and government operations. I cannot begin to tell you how delighted I am.”
Ludwig rubbed the back of his neck, looking uncharacteristically bashful.
“Since Mother is pleased, I shall strive to fulfill my duties as the Crown Prince even more diligently in the future.”
The Queen lightly tapped her lace fan against her mouth, a meaningful smile playing on her lips.
“I think I finally understand now. Who it is that managed to tie down His Highness’s fleeting, wind-like heart.”
Ludwig looked caught off guard, a flustered expression surfacing on his face. It was entirely unlike his usual composed and slick self.
“So, what are your thoughts, Librarian Erika?” the Queen asked, her eyes crinkling elegantly as she looked at me.
‘Wait, why is the spark flying toward me?! Your Majesty, that is a statement that invites severe misunderstandings. You make it sound as if I am the one who tamed the Crown Prince’s flirtatious nature! I have done absolutely nothing with the Crown Prince, and I plan to fiercely continue doing nothing with him in the future!’
…is what I wanted to state clearly, but rank is everything in this world, and how could a mere librarian dare to talk back to the Queen?
“Haha, whatever do you mean, Your Majesty?” I laughed awkwardly, taking a sip of my cooled tea. Looking past my cup to gauge Calix’s reaction, I saw his expression was as grave as if he were witnessing a national catastrophe.
“Ahem, Your Majesty’s jesting has truly improved as well. I have something to report to you.” Ludwig cleared his throat with a low cough, deftly pivoting the topic to politics.
“In the state council meeting held today, the proposal to establish a new knight order was passed.”
Fortunately, it proved to be an effective diversion. The Queen beamed with a gratified smile, looking proudly at the Crown Prince.
“I heard from the court advisor. His Majesty the King will be immensely pleased as well.”
“The credit does not belong to me. Duke Reinhardt proposed it first, stating that an elite force is necessary to prepare for future demonic beast attacks.” The Prince displayed a humble attitude, deflecting the achievement to Calix.
‘Wow, that is genuinely surprising.’
In the original novel, they were constantly at each other’s throats, yet here he is, deflecting credit right in front of his mother.
The Queen nodded, signaling a maid to pour fresh tea. Piping hot steam wafted up, filling the air with the rich aroma of black tea.
The Queen stared intently at the white steam rising from her cup.
“The nobility’s resistance must be severe. They will view the establishment of a new knight order not as a means of defending the capital, but as a method to strengthen royal authority.”
An ambitious smirk played on the corners of Ludwig’s lips.
“Their assessment is correct. Through the establishment of this knight order, I plan to catch two rabbits at once: defending the capital and strengthening royal authority.”
“Heh, I figured as much. You have been greedy since you were a child.” The Queen smiled, and the Crown Prince responded with a relaxed grin as he continued.
“The House of Duke Schpern, from whom I anticipated the greatest resistance, unexpectedly declared they would provide support. Aside from them, the neutral faction and the royalists all voted in favor.”
The Queen’s hand, which had been gracefully lifting her teacup, froze midair.
“The House of Schpern, you say? I heard that Young Lord Franz is currently acting as their proxy.”
“That is correct.”
At the mention of Franz’s name, my heart began to thud violently once more. A complex tangle of fear and anger churned within me like settled tea dregs being disturbed.
“Unlike Duke Schpern, I heard his eldest son is quite flexible. It seems the worldly assessment of him wasn’t entirely wrong. Even if it is merely on the surface.”
As expected of the nation’s mother, her insight in judging people was remarkable. The original novel had depicted her as a tragic queen who lived in seclusion within the palace, entirely cut off from the world and consumed by grief.
Emerging from her brief contemplation, the Queen lifted her head. Her emerald eyes locked directly onto mine.
“Lady Diel, how does the Royal Library plan to respond to this? I would like to hear your perspective as a librarian.”
“Pardon…?”
Caught completely off guard by her sudden question, I stumbled, unsure of how to respond. The actual operations and planning of the library were handled by Director William and Madam Marian; it wasn’t an answer a mere employee like me could provide.
“Oh dear, my question was too brief,” the Queen added kindly.
“The palace will establish a knight order to prepare for the emergence of demonic beasts. Capital security will be reinforced, and public sentiment will stabilize. What measures is the Royal Library, which oversees the culture and knowledge of Ruberia, preparing?”
‘The question just evolved into something even deeper and more difficult!’
I paused for a moment to organize my thoughts. This felt like the right moment to voice something I had actually wanted to try since becoming a librarian in this world.
“I am not aware of any immediate official plans… but if I may share a personal wish, up until now, whenever issues like demonic beast appearances or the theft of grimoires occurred, the library responded by temporarily closing down. Of course, those were necessary measures, given that the Royal Library holds the critical responsibility of managing magical texts. However, moving forward, I believe we should also reinforce the library’s fundamental role.”
I delivered my opinion calmly and steadily. The Queen nodded, a smile gracing her lips. Calix and Ludwig were also listening intently, their faces filled with curiosity.
“The role of the Royal Library… Pray, speak more specifically.”
“The more critical the situation, shouldn’t we ensure that patrons can visit normally? I hope that people can pursue academic research and find joy in seeking wisdom within the library, thereby gaining the strength to conquer their fear of demonic beasts and protect their daily lives.”
Taking a deep breath, I continued.
“Therefore, as part of that effort, I would like to establish a book club tailored specifically for the young ladies of the nobility.”
A brilliant glint sparked in the Queen’s eyes. “Why specifically a book club for young ladies?”
“I am aware that the Academy, our primary educational institution, only admits young lords, while young ladies receive their education from private tutors. However, I understand that young ladies from impoverished noble families often cannot even receive basic education. I wish for the Royal Library to provide an opportunity for learning to those ladies.”
I recalled the time when a crowd of noble ladies had swamped the library. Back then, I had grumbled about the sacred library turning into a high society salon, but Director William had noted that the newfound vitality was a welcome change.
It was then that I realized I had harbored prejudices against them. I had assumed that noble ladies did nothing but dance at balls, drink tea at parties, and gossip about dresses or potential husbands.
While some had indeed come simply to trail after the Crown Prince, there were many who stood by the bookshelves, thoroughly engrossed in selecting and reading texts with serious expressions.
The Erika of the original novel had been no different. Upon the sudden death of her father, the head of the family, her status and honor were stripped away by her cousin, and she was reduced to being sold off into marriage. It was a stark depiction of how precarious the position of a noble lady could be in this world.
Had they been commoners, they could at least till the land or engage in commerce to feed themselves. However, their noble status acted as a shackle, preventing them from doing even that. They lived as greenhouse flowers, raised solely for the sake of their families and future marriages, without ever receiving a chance to plant their own roots.
If it were up to me, I would have opened the library completely, allowing any citizen of Ruberia to use it freely… but that was an impossibility for now. Therefore, as a first step, I wanted to provide educational opportunities for these young ladies. With this as a starting point, the library’s doors could gradually open to everyone.
Originally, I had planned to discuss this with Director William, but I never imagined I would end up proposing it to the Queen of Ruberia first.
“I plan to invite experts in politics, society, and culture to host lectures, providing a forum for the ladies to engage in discussions and share opinions. Furthermore, if there are participants interested, I would also like to open an archery class.”
At the mention of an archery class, the Queen’s eyes widened in surprise. “Archery for young ladies? Do you truly believe there will be those willing to learn?”
“It is a pleasant thought, but as you well know, Librarian Erika, families of sufficient status to reside in the capital do not bother teaching their daughters self-defense. They possess ample other means to ensure their safety,” Ludwig added, furrowing his brow dramatically.
Calix, on the other hand, maintained a serious demeanor, listening to my words in silence.
“I believe young ladies require the strength to protect themselves as well. Had I not learned archery, I would not have been able to fight against the demonic beast either. I wish to grant everyone the courage to conquer their fears.”
The Queen remained composed as she listened. A fleeting worry crossed my mind that I might have inadvertently offended her.
Tapping the edge of her fan against her palm, the Queen sank into deep contemplation. Soon, an elegant curve formed on her lips.
“I find myself quite fond of the Royal Library librarian’s perspective. The palace shall provide unstinting support. Lady Diel, you shall take the lead in establishing this book club.”
Her decisive approval was so readily given that it left me momentarily bewildered. However, this was an absolute golden opportunity—a challenge I had desperately wanted to take on as a librarian. Using books to transform people’s lives, nurture their dreams, and help them move forward.
With all my heart, I bowed my head deeply to express my gratitude.
“I offer my sincerest gratitude for Your Majesty’s support for the citizens of Ruberia.”
“Think nothing of it. I am the one who must request your best efforts for our people.”
When I lifted my head, Calix and Ludwig were clapping for me. Seeing their proud and gratified expressions made me a bit bashful, but my shoulders squared with pride nonetheless.
Following that, light conversation flowed smoothly. It was only after a significant amount of time had passed that the Queen finally rose from her seat.
The Crown Prince took the Queen’s hand, escorting her as they took a slow stroll through the rose garden. Calix and I followed quietly behind them.
As we passed through a section of rose vines whose fragrance was almost dizzyingly thick, Calix quietly caught my arm, bringing me to a halt.
“Erika, one moment.”
“What is the matter?”
Standing so close within his space, I felt slightly lightheaded from the mixture of his distinct scent and the surrounding roses.
“It has become disheveled.”
Calix carefully adjusted the roses pinned to my head. Seeing his hands, which had spent a lifetime holding nothing but a sword, move so clumsily… it was incredibly endearing.
“Thank you, Your Grace.”
As I gazed up at Calix, the Crown Prince, who had been walking ahead, stopped and turned around. The gaze from his golden-blue eyes as he watched us felt as sharp as a rose thorn.
Just then, the Queen, who had been walking gracefully through the garden, suddenly halted as if something had crossed her mind.
“Ah, it would be wonderful to meet Lady Diel and Duke Reinhardt again at the palace ball.”
At the Queen’s words, Ludwig displayed a look of considerable surprise. However, his face quickly brightened like a child receiving a coveted gift.
“Mother, will you be attending the ball this time as well?”
“I must fulfill my duties; I cannot remain consumed by grief forever. Just as our goddess of war advised, I intend to find the courage for the sake of those I love.”
The gaze the Queen directed at me was filled with profound warmth and trust.
While offering a polite bow in accordance with etiquette, I made a desperate silent plea in my heart.
‘Those are incredibly reassuring words, Your Majesty… but could you please stop calling me a ‘goddess’? My entire body cringes every single time I hear it.’
