Chapter 16
“…….”
Was this what it felt like for the world to crumble? For a split second, Roabellin thought about stubbornly insisting that El simply resembled someone else—that the likeness to him was merely a coincidence.
But her opponent was the Emperor, and his word was law. He could simply take Ezekiel to the temple for a paternity test. In fact, if he wanted to keep it simple, he didn’t even need to go that far.
‘He could just declare El as his child… El resembles him so much that no one would dare step forward to demand proof from the Emperor.’
Roabellin tried to say something, but her lips only parted without a sound. With her mind gone blank, she couldn’t organize her thoughts into a proper sentence.
“Seeing your reaction, there is no doubt he is my child. What is the boy’s name?”
After blinking several times to steady her dizzy vision, she finally managed a slow reply.
“…El… I call him Ezekiel.”
“A fine name. El.”
He called the child’s name tenderly.
“Abu… Kyaa!”
Unaware of his mother’s turmoil, Ezekiel laughed brightly, seemingly in a good mood. Kaisertern, watching the child with a quiet smile, spoke to Roabellin in a low voice.
“Let’s talk. I have much to hear from you, and much to tell you.”
Having regained a sliver of composure, she reached out her trembling arms toward Kaisertern, who was holding Ezekiel.
“The child, give him to me. I… I will hold him…”
However, far from handing the child over, Kaisertern adjusted his hold to be more secure.
“No, he must be heavy for you. I will carry him.”
“The—The Emperor… something heavy…”
She meant to say that one could not let the Emperor carry something heavy, but in her half-dazed state, she couldn’t finish the sentence. Kaisertern, however, seemed to understand the gist of it.
“Does my status interfere with holding my own child?”
“…”
He emphasized at every opportunity that Ezekiel was his child. Roabellin, left speechless, slowly lowered her arms with a dazed expression, though her anxious gaze remained fixed on the boy. Kaisertern noticed her thoughts.
“Do not worry. I promise you: I will not take the child by force. I will not harm anyone in your party. I simply wish to speak with you.”
Since he went that far, she had no choice. Even if she had another excuse, as long as Ezekiel was in his arms, Roabellin could offer no resistance.
“I… understand. Please, come in.”
“Hmm. Into the room of this inn?”
Kaisertern looked up at the small inn building with a slight frown. The rooms in such small inns were bound to be cramped and shabby, and above all, they would certainly lack proper soundproofing. It was no place for a significant conversation.
“I think the place I’ve prepared would be more suitable. This way.”
“…?”
Where Kaisertern led Roabellin was none other than the back gate of the inn’s courtyard. Two large, luxurious carriages were waiting there—carriages Roabellin had seen before.
‘The Imperial carriages…!’
It was then.
“Here you are, Roa. What are you doing out here…”
Estina, who had been looking for Roabellin and Ezekiel, happened to find them in the backyard. Calling out casually, she suddenly caught sight of Kaisertern holding Ezekiel and let out a sharp gasp.
Estina had never met Kaisertern, but she recognized him immediately because of what she’d heard from Roabellin—and because he shared the exact same face as Ezekiel, whom she saw every day. Kaisertern also seemed slightly surprised to see Estina, who bore a strong resemblance to Roabellin.
“Ah, Aunt!”
Roabellin turned to Estina, her face a mix of relief and distress.
“Aha. You look so much alike, I would have taken you for sisters.”
Hearing the title ‘Aunt,’ Kaisertern’s expression softened.
“I… I greet His Imperial Majesty, the Sun of the Empire…”
Though startled and stuttering, Estina immediately showed the proper etiquette for the Emperor.
“It is a pleasure to meet you. My apologies, but could you take the child for a moment?”
Kaisertern held Ezekiel out to Estina. Not knowing what was happening, she took the baby into her arms. Perhaps he found Kaisertern’s arms comfortable, for Ezekiel had fallen asleep at some point.
Kaisertern looked between Estina and Roabellin.
“I will be speaking with Roabellin in that carriage for a while. I thought Roabellin would trust that I have no intention of kidnapping her or the child if Ezekiel remains with his family.”
Hearing him call her by her real name, Estina immediately sensed that their life as fugitives was over. Holding Ezekiel, she bowed her head.
“Yes, Your Majesty. We shall… wait in our room at the inn.”
After Estina went inside, Kaisertern and Roabellin moved to the carriage. Once they were seated inside the large, thick-walled carriage, a moment of silence hung in the air. It was Kaisertern who broke it.
“Once before, the two of us sat in a carriage like this.”
“Ah, you mean… when we went to the Hot Spring Palace.”
“Yes. It was a place I went to in hopes of winning your heart. In the end, it seems I failed miserably at that.”
Seeing him speak so self-deprecatingly, Roabellin felt her fear of him slightly dissipate.
‘Am I strange for thinking this man is a bit cute right now? Since he promised not to harm us, maybe I should say what’s on my mind.’
She replied hesitantly.
“It wasn’t… exactly like that.”
As soon as she finished her sentence, Kaisertern’s question flew at her.
“Really? So I didn’t fail entirely?”
His eyes sparkled in a way that didn’t match his powerful impression; Roabellin felt as though she could almost see a fluffy tail wagging behind him.
‘He feels just like one of those wolf-dogs said to live in the North.’
But she couldn’t very well tell the Emperor he was like a dog. Roabellin subtly sidestepped his question.
“Well… why are you asking that now?”
“All while I was searching for you, I wondered about your feelings for me. But it seems asking that first of the person who fled from me won’t give me much of an advantage.”
Kaisertern made a somewhat pitiful expression before changing the subject.
“Let’s talk about something else first. By any chance, do you remember the incident at the Aventador Palace hunting grounds nine years ago?”
“Ah…!”
Roabellin let out a small gasp of surprise.
“So the boy named ‘Kai’ back then… was indeed Your Majesty.”
Roabellin’s eyes grew distant as she recalled that day. Seeing the tension ease from her face, Kaisertern naturally laid his hand over hers.
“Yes. And shortly after that, I went to find your home. I intended to propose to you, my first love who made me ‘explode.’ But when I arrived at the Duke’s castle… there was nothing but ruins. It was a situation where I couldn’t possibly hope you had survived. You must have suffered greatly, but I, too, wept more than I can say. To me, you were my first love… and it ended so cruelly and painfully.”
Listening silently to his story, Roabellin suddenly remembered one of the questions she wanted to ask him.
“The person who did that to Hertenes… why did he do such a thing…?”
Though he was the enemy of her family, he was also the Emperor’s brother, so she unconsciously used a polite honorific. Kaisertern caught onto her meaning.
“So you know who did it. I only learned the truth last year, and I sent him to a prison from which he will never emerge alive. He was already in exile for treason, regardless.”
At his answer, a look of slight relief and simultaneous doubt crossed Roabellin’s face.
“So it wasn’t an act committed as the Emperor of Prahenfelt, but an independent action. Then why on earth did he do that to our family, when there was no grudge…?”
Kaisertern hesitated for a moment, but he couldn’t lie now that they had come this far. Even the great Kaisertern couldn’t bring himself to look Roabellin in the eye as he said this. Turning his gaze away slightly, he spoke the truth slowly.
“Even while sitting on the temporary throne, he was incredibly wary of me, the third prince at the time. That incident was part of his vigilance. …He said he did it simply because he wanted to see my young self suffer.”
Roabellin had been listening calmly, but those final words felt like a heavy blow to the head.
“What…? For such a reason…? He was the Emperor, and… an adult. Just to make his young brother sad… he did that to my family…?”
Roabellin was so shocked she couldn’t even finish her sentence. Looking at her pained face with agony, Kaisertern stepped down from his seat and knelt before her.
“…?!”
The tears pooling in her eyes widened. Kaisertern lowered his gaze to the floor and spoke softly.
“That’s right. Such a monster is, sadly and shamefully, my own kin. To you, who suffered by the sins of my blood, I want to apologize on his behalf, though it is late. I know this won’t erase the pain you and your family endured… but at the very least, I want to beg for forgiveness in the name of the Prahenfelt Imperial Family. No, I won’t even ask for your forgiveness. I simply want to offer a sincere apology.”
His low yet clear voice sounded both tender and wretched. Had he been grieving over this for a long time as well? Roabellin opened her mouth to say something, but the words wouldn’t come out. Before she even realized her throat was tight with emotion, a teardrop fell—drip—onto his hand.
When her tear hit his hand, Kaisertern lifted his head to look at her. With his large, warm hands, he gently enveloped Roabellin’s trembling ones.
“Since it was the fault of the Emperor at the time, I will issue an official statement of apology to the House of Hertenes in the name of the Imperial Family upon our return. And since all of this ultimately happened because I loved you, I want to spend my life apologizing to you and repaying this debt of the heart. I want to let you live enjoying a hundred, a thousand times more than everything you lost because of me…”
The sincere gaze in Kaisertern’s eyes as he looked up at her reflected his true heart. Even as everything blurred through her tears, Roabellin could clearly see his deep golden eyes.
“Will you give me a chance? A chance to apologize to you for the rest of my life, and perhaps one day, to be forgiven.”
His careful words pierced Roabellin’s heart. It wasn’t about continuing the family line, nor was it about taking revenge with her own hands.
‘To have me and my family receive such a sincere apology…’
Roabellin realized at this moment: that was what she had truly wanted since the fall of her house. Tears fell once more from her violet eyes, wetting the back of his hand. She bit her lip to suppress the emotions threatening to burst out.
Kaisertern, looking at her with pity, slowly stood up and pulled her into his embrace. The next moment, her tear-streaked face was buried against his solid chest. At the touch of his warm embrace, the sorrow Roabellin had suppressed for so long finally exploded.
“Heugh… sob!!! Sob… Ah… Aaaaaah…”
Clinging to Kaisertern’s chest, Roabellin sobbed like a child for a long time. Receiving the gentle patting of his large, warm hand, she let the long-held sorrow and pain flow out with her tears.
***
Itanistad stood at the gate of the Duke’s castle. A short while ago, one of the Emperor’s guards had arrived with an imperial decree: “His Majesty has gone out and will return; he will be heading to the Duke’s castle instead of the administrative office, so be waiting out front.”
He was staring at the hill ahead, waiting for Kaisertern to appear. Elina, who had followed him out, also craned her neck to look at the hilltop and asked.
“Why did he tell us to wait here? Didn’t you hear anything else?”
“No, that was all I was told. Oh! That carriage on the hill, it’s the Imperial carriage, right?”
“It looks like it. But why is His Majesty using a carriage instead of a horse? And there are two of them coming.”
While the two were tilting their heads in confusion, the ornate and large imperial carriages quickly arrived at the castle gate. Itanistad, Elina, the aides, administrators, and servants—everyone who had come out—lined up in two rows to greet the Emperor.
When the carriages stopped before them, Itanistad’s servant stepped forward and opened the door of the first carriage. As expected, Kaisertern stepped out, and the people bowed in unison.
“Welcome back, Your Imperial Majesty.”
However, instead of walking through the rows of people, Kaisertern turned back toward the carriage and reached out his hand. The onlookers didn’t even have time to wonder what was happening. In the next moment, Kaisertern took a baby from someone inside. The baby was sleeping, but he had the same black hair and a face that looked just like his. Itanistad and Elina, recognizing the baby, looked as if they had been hit over the back of the head.
‘Gasp…!’
But that wasn’t the end. Kaisertern shifted the child to one arm and reached into the carriage again with his other hand. Then, taking his hand, a dazzlingly beautiful woman carefully stepped out of the carriage.
Others were surprised that this woman—beautiful but dressed in ordinary clothes—was receiving ‘escort from the Emperor himself,’ while Itanistad and Elina were shocked because they knew that face well.
‘Ro—Roa? How did this happen so suddenly?’
Roabellin lowered her head slightly in embarrassment, avoiding the pouring gazes of the people. Kaisertern saw Itanistad’s pale face and wore a slightly mischievous smile.
“You were out here, Duke. But you bear a striking resemblance to this lady. Anyone would take you for siblings.”
At his words, the color drained from Itanistad’s face once more.
‘He knows everything—that I was hiding Roa…!’
However, Roabellin, with her head bowed and eyes downcast, showed no particular change in expression. Meanwhile, Estina and the rest of the family stepped out from the second carriage. People who had been marveling at how Roabellin and Itanistad shared the same tone of platinum hair and similar features were further surprised to see that Estina also looked very much like Roabellin. But since they were in front of the Emperor, they couldn’t murmur aloud and only let their curiosity build internally.
Just as the silent buzzing filled the air, Kaisertern spoke leisurely.
“I asked everyone to be out here so I could introduce the Empress and the Prince before entering the Duke’s residence. I couldn’t have the Empress and the Prince enter the mansion quietly without any welcome, after all.”
Itanistad’s eyes went wide at the sudden, unexpected titles.
“Excuse me? Her—Her Imperial Majesty the Empress, and His Imperial Highness the Prince… you say?”
Kaisertern replied with a smirk to the stuttering, dazed man.
“Yes. Though the formal investiture hasn’t happened yet, the Young Lady of Hertenes is the one who will soon be my Empress, and this child is the child between the Empress and myself. I plan to formally propose to the Young Lady in the presence of the Head of the House at the Duke’s castle. Is there any problem with the procedure?”
It was custom for the Emperor to visit the residence of the lady who would be Empress and propose in the presence of the Head of the House, presenting the marriage proposal and gifts. Since this was almost identical to the customs of Aventador, Itanistad knew the procedure well. Unable to find the words to reply, he rubbed his throbbing forehead.
“That… well. Yes, it is the… proper procedure.”
The corners of Kaisertern’s mouth curled up.
“So, you don’t deny that Roabellin is the ‘Hertenes Young Lady’?”
It seemed he had decided to lay everything out in the open. Itanistad felt a sense of resignation.
“Ah, that… yes. Anyone can see…”
Despite his weak surrender, Kaisertern threw a pointed joke.
“Then, are you two not siblings reunited after nine years? Why aren’t you looking more glad to see each other? Were you on bad terms as children?”
He seemed to want to tease Itanistad, who hadn’t informed him even though he had reunited with Roabellin long ago. It was clearly a joke, but because of his guilty conscience, Itanistad couldn’t even make eye contact and just broke into a cold sweat.
“No, no. I am glad… In my heart, very passionately…”
In fact, on the carriage ride over, Roabellin had entreated Kaisertern for clemency for her brother and received his consent. Thus, knowing this was Kaisertern’s small revenge, she simply stood there quietly, hiding her expression. But Itanistad, who didn’t know that, was now on the verge of tears.
Unable to watch any longer, Elina stepped in to help.
“Your Majesty, I apologize for interrupting. Would it not be best to let the Empress and the Prince rest first? You can discuss the national wedding comfortably with the Duke inside.”
It was a suggestion to stop this and go inside—an attempt to break the flow that had put Itanistad in a bind. Since Kaisertern was in the position of wanting to propose, he accepted the suggestion as if he had no choice.
“Let’s do that.”
Soon, Kaisertern, Roabellin, and the whole family were led into the Duke’s castle by the butler.
Roabellin and Estina were assigned their own rooms and borrowed dresses from Elina. After a quick preparation, everyone gathered in the drawing room to discuss the marriage. When Roabellin entered the drawing room, Kaisertern, who had been sitting, stared with wide eyes. It was his first time seeing her in a noblewoman’s dress.
“…You were always beautiful no matter what you wore, but now you finally look as if you are wearing clothes befitting your status. It suits you perfectly.”
In his golden eyes, a rare emotion of fluttering excitement could be seen. Roabellin’s cheeks flushed at the compliment she received as soon as she entered.
“Thank you. It’s been a long time since I wore a dress like this, so I feel awkward as well.”
“You’ll have to get used to it again. From now on, you will live your whole life wearing and using only the most beautiful and precious things in the world.”
Roabellin sat down with a shy smile, and Itanistad watched his sister with affectionate eyes. Kaisertern glanced at him and immediately changed targets.
“So, Duke. How does it feel to have mocked me by pretending not to know the whereabouts of the Young Lady while keeping her by your side?”
His expression was clearly smiling, but his words were bone-chilling. The atmosphere in the drawing room, which had lightened slightly, immediately turned heavy. However, Itanistad had already spoken privately with the Emperor a moment ago, detailing how the siblings had reunited and how they had lived since then, and had asked for forgiveness. Consequently, he was now able to find a bit of composure.
“What power do I have? I shall hide behind the future Empress.”
It was a pointed remark meaning “Please go easy on me for her sake,” and “I am the brother of the woman you want to marry.” Of course, he didn’t forget to take a step back politely while saying so.
“But once again, I am sorry. I will repay this debt of the heart by serving both Your Majesties with loyalty for the rest of my life.”
Watching them, Roabellin gently laid her hand over one of Kaisertern’s. Kaisertern looked at her with slightly surprised eyes. His heart thudded; it was the first time she had initiated physical contact, however minor.
Roabellin met his eyes with a gentle smile and an apologetic expression.
“I am the one who is sorry. My brother’s only sin was granting the request of a sister he thought was dead and then found again. Your Majesty, please hold me responsible for the sin and spare my brother.”
The eyes of Kaisertern, looking into her beautiful violet eyes, flickered minutely. How long had it been since he saw a warm smile, rather than fear, from her?
At that single ray of spring-like smile, his heart pounded wildly. A moment later, realizing he had been staring at her in a daze, Kaisertern cleared his throat.
“Ahem, hmmm. I cannot possibly hold the Empress responsible for such a thing. What if you take me for a narrow-minded man and refuse my proposal?”
His manner of speaking had shifted entirely to formal address. It was his way of showing that, in front of others, he would treat her as the Empress from now on. The others in the room gaped at Kaisertern’s unprecedented tone and expression.
‘W-What is this? Is that the Emperor I know?!’
But their shock was of no concern to Kaisertern. He simply smiled softly at Roabellin. Seeing that smile, she smiled back shyly. It was as if only the two of them existed in the world right now.
Then, Roabellin asked as if something had suddenly occurred to her.
“By the way, Your Majesty. Do I have the option of not accepting that proposal?”
Even though he knew it was a joke, a moment of tension flashed across Kaisertern’s face. He tried to maintain his composure and answered seriously.
“…Of course, I will respect the Empress’s free will. However, until the day you accept my proposal, I intend to take up residence here in the Duke’s castle. No matter how long that takes.”
Roabellin was stunned by his shameless answer. Having sorted out their tangled emotions while sharing their stories in the carriage on the way back, she could now speak comfortably to Kaisertern.
“I thought you would have a more special alternative since you are the Emperor. To win my heart, shouldn’t you show me something more impressive than that?”
Everyone else in the room was shocked to hear her speak with such bold composure.
‘Is it okay to talk to His Majesty like that?!’
But Kaisertern, as if he had been waiting, smiled and raised her hand to kiss the back of it.
“It is regrettable that the Empress has not yet fallen sufficiently for me. Then, will you give me the chance to properly woo the Empress?”
An intrigued expression appeared on Roabellin’s face at his unexpected words. But the thoughts of the people nearby were different. Itanistad spoke up with a pained expression.
“Umm… Your Majesty. My apologies for interrupting. But are we… perhaps sitting here without any sense?”
In essence, he meant, “I can’t stand to listen to this anymore, so should we leave so the two of you can talk?” Realizing he had forgotten others were there because he was only looking at Roabellin, Kaisertern cleared his throat again.
“Ahem, hmmm. Is it not the most important part of the proposal procedure for the Empress to accept? Duke. Let’s continue the talk we were having—about the schedule for the national wedding.”
Kaisertern quickly changed the subject, but he couldn’t hide his slightly reddened ears. Seeing him like that, Roabellin also wore a happy smile, her cheeks flushed. A warm air, like their expressions, filled the drawing room.
After finishing the discussion on the procedures and schedule for the wedding, Kaisertern looked around at everyone.
“Once we return to the Imperial Palace, I plan to appoint a new Archmage and proceed with an oath.”
“Pardon? What do you mean…?”
Itanistad was puzzled by the sudden topic, but Kaisertern looked more serious than ever.
***
A few hours ago, inside the carriage heading to the Duke’s castle. Kaisertern spoke while holding Roabellin’s hand.
“Roa, I want you to trust me completely. But I won’t just tell you to trust me. I want to make it so that you can sincerely trust me.”
He spoke after a moment of silence, having heard all the stories of what she had feared and why she had fled and hidden.
“…?”
Roabellin looked a bit puzzled, wondering what he meant by giving her trust. Kaisertern continued.
“I intend to perform a magic of oath.”
The magic of oath—that was something even Roabellin had heard of.
“Pardon? Isn’t that the one where you cast magic on the oath-taker’s body? The one where you die a painful death if you break the oath… the magic that cannot be undone once cast?”
“Yes, that’s right. I will make an oath that you will be the only woman in my life.”
“What?!”
After marriage, a promise not to have another partner for the rest of one’s life would be natural for an ordinary couple. The problem was that he was the Emperor. Roabellin looked a bit troubled.
“Of course, once we are married, we are husband and wife… but Your Majesty can legally take concubines. If you make such an oath, you might find yourself in a difficult situation later. Besides, an oath that puts the Emperor’s life at stake—is that even appropriate?”
However, Kaisertern did not miss the momentary flash of pain in Roabellin’s eyes as she said that. He wanted to make sure she never felt that way again.
“No, that won’t happen. I already have an heir, so the nobles won’t be able to push for concubines using the excuse of an heir. And more than that, I want to give you complete trust. The trust that my feelings for you will not change, and the trust that you and El will never be in danger in the Imperial Palace.”
“But,”
“I would die if I broke the oath, but I would also die without you. While I was searching for you, I wasn’t truly living.”
At the sudden, deep confession, Roabellin stared blankly at his face, slightly flustered.
“Why? Is something strange?”
“Ah, no. You were always someone who spoke so stiffly. Hearing such things… it’s surprising, and touching…”
At her words, Kaisertern let out a short laugh. Even that sound, like escaping breath, was filled with spring-like warmth. That warmth seeped into Roabellin’s heart.
“It is a bit overwhelming… but I am happy for your—no, Kai’s sincerity. Even if you don’t cast such magic, I already trust Kai.”
Saying so, Roabellin couldn’t hide the smile spreading across her face.
***
Just as the explanation of the oath magic for Roabellin’s family was drawing to a close, Count Raymond entered the drawing room to report.
“Your Majesty, I have returned. The items are waiting just outside the drawing room.”
He had just rushed back from the Imperial Palace via the gate, following Kaisertern’s urgent command. According to formal proposal etiquette, Kaisertern should have returned to Vicentium, gathered the gifts, and then revisited the Duke’s castle. However, he was in too much of a hurry, terrified that Roabellin might change her mind in the interim. Thus, he had sent Count Raymond to handle it immediately.
“Well done. Duke, shall we begin the proposal procedure at once?”
Itanistad was slightly taken caught off guard by Kaisertern’s command disguised as a question.
“Right now, you mean?”
But with the Emperor’s aide already waiting with the gifts, the procedure had effectively begun. Itanistad swallowed a sigh.
“…Yes, I understand. Please, proceed.”
Kaisertern glanced at Roabellin as if asking if she was ready, and she responded with a small nod and a faint smile.
“Good. Let us begin. Let everyone present be a witness to this proposal.”
At Kaisertern’s word, Count Raymond stepped forward holding the formal marriage proposal. Kaisertern took the document and began to read. His voice was a pleasant, resonant baritone.
“I, Kaisertern Erlenkönig Prahenfelt, the 52nd Emperor of the Prahenfelt Empire, seek to forge the deepest bond with the House of Hertenes. I hereby command that the Young Lady of Hertenes, Roabellin Carthenna, be received as the Empress; therefore, you, the Duke of Hertenes, shall obey with all loyalty.”
While Kaisertern himself might have felt tender, the language of the official Imperial proposal was stiff and overwhelmingly authoritative. On the surface, it took the form of a ‘command’ rather than a request or a suggestion. However, everyone in the room knew that both the document and the Duke’s response were merely parts of a set ritual.
Itanistad bowed politely toward Kaisertern and replied.
“The House of Hertenes receives His Imperial Majesty’s command with the utmost joy. It is the greatest honor of our house that a daughter of Hertenes becomes a member of the Imperial Family.”
With the head of the house’s consent finalized, the next step was the presentation of gifts. Kaisertern ordered the offerings waiting outside to be brought in. Luxurious treasures began to pile up in the drawing room continuously. It looked as if he had ransacked half of the Imperial treasury.
“It feels a bit meager since I had to prepare in such haste. I shall send more once I return to the palace.”
Kaisertern seemed dissatisfied with the amount. Meanwhile, those watching the drawing room stared blankly at the never-ending parade of tribute.
During the commotion, Kaisertern approached Roabellin and held out a small box.
“This is the ring I intended to give you at the villa. Do you remember that day?”
Since it was the day she had fled from him, it was impossible for her to forget. Roabellin blushed at the memory and replied.
“Yes… I am truly sorry about that. So you were planning to propose then. No wonder. I was very happy that day.”
Recalling that day for a moment, Kaisertern suddenly realized something.
“Come to think of it, at fifteen right after the ‘explosion,’ and again the year before last at the villa—I have tried to propose to the same woman every time.”
“Ah…! You’re right.”
Kaisertern had fallen for her twice without even knowing she was the same person. It was a strange fate that had reconnected across a long void of time. For Roabellin, another thought struck her.
‘Even after my family fell, even after I fled from him, and even after living in a completely different country… my destiny to become his “Empress” never changed.’
While she was inwardly marveling at the weight of her fate, Kaisertern continued with a soft smile.
“Looking back, there has truly been no woman but you in my life. Now, this is my third attempt at proposing to the same person. I truly hope this one succeeds.”
Though he spoke jokingly, Kaisertern’s face soon turned solemn. Now was the turn to seek the consent of the bride herself, rather than the head of the house. Since the official agreement (?) with the Duke was finished, this part was more personal. This was the stage where an Emperor’s proposal usually contained his true heart—unless it was a political marriage, in which case this part would remain cold and ritualistic.
Kaisertern handed the ring box to a servant standing nearby and knelt on one knee before Roabellin. Taking her hand in his, he spoke with a grave expression.
“Noble Young Lady of Hertenes. A son of Prahenfelt entreats you. I wish to complete the proposal I failed to make twice before. Roabellin Carthenna Hertenes, please be my Empress.”
Roabellin looked down at Kaisertern’s face. Curiously, the thought crossed her mind that seeing him from this angle felt unfamiliar. Whether it was her height, which barely reached his shoulder, or the immense gap in status, she had always had to look up at him. Only now did he look like “an incredibly handsome young man.” Black hair, features as refined as a sculpture, deep golden eyes, a straight nose, and a sharp, masculine jawline.
This man, who possessed both strength and nobility. The man who sat on the highest seat in the world was, at this moment, kneeling before her, pleading for her hand.
When Roabellin remained silent for a moment while looking at him, tension gripped the onlookers. Finally, breaking the short silence, she spoke words that were somewhat unexpected.
“You call this a proposal, yet you seem to have forgotten one thing.”
When Kaisertern looked at her with a puzzled face, Roabellin spoke with a purposefully demure expression.
“This is a proposal from the Emperor… but since this isn’t a political marriage, and since you missed your chance twice, I would like you to propose more privately. As a man to a woman.”
A small smile spread across Kaisertern’s face. After a moment’s thought, he adjusted his posture and knelt on one knee again.
“I, Kaisertern Prahenfelt, love you, Roabellin Hertenes. From the moment I first met you, I have loved and wanted you without a single moment’s pause. If you love me as well… will you marry me and spend your life with me?”
It was not the authoritative, ritualistic proposal of an Emperor, but one filled with the heart of a man named Kaisertern. His sincerity, carried by his low yet clear voice, pierced Roabellin’s heart. She replied with a slightly trembling voice.
“I, Roabellin Hertenes, who loves Kaisertern Prahenfelt, accept your proposal.”
In an instant, joy flooded Kaisertern’s face. He leaped up from his spot and pulled Roabellin into his arms by her shoulders. Roabellin was instantly trapped in his broad embrace.
“Thank you, Roabellin. Thank you so much.”
Holding her tightly, Kaisertern looked more happy than he had been in his entire life.
“Ugh, I can’t breathe.”
Roabellin barely pulled her face away from his chest. Though flustered by the sudden hug, she didn’t look like she disliked it. Kaisertern, gazing at her lovingly, soon remembered something.
“Ah, the ring.”
The proposal procedure was only complete, and the engagement official, once the ring was on her finger. At his word, a waiting servant politely opened the box and offered it to him.
He took the ring out and gently slid it onto the fourth finger of Roabellin’s left hand. It was a magnificent ring with a large diamond in the center, surrounded by smaller diamonds encrusting the entire band.
“I had this ring made when I was first preparing to propose, but seeing it now, it feels humble for you. I shall prepare a wedding ring that is far more beautiful and fitting for the dignity of an Empress.”
“What? I find this ring perfectly lovely. It’s truly beautiful.”
“No, it isn’t enough. And regardless of your personal taste, please understand that the dignity of the Empress represents the face of the Imperial Family.”
Kaisertern spoke with a grin.
“Also, please understand my desire to give you only the most precious and best things in this world.”
Hearing his tender words, Roabellin gently stroked the ring with her right hand. The jewel sparkling in the light shone as brilliantly as Kaisertern’s eyes when he looked at her.
The proposal concluded, a pleasant dinner passed, and night fell. Before retiring, everyone gathered by the fireplace to drink tea. The Duke’s butler entered and reported quietly.
“The room for His Imperial Majesty has been prepared. I shall lead you whenever you are ready.”
At that, Kaisertern asked the butler with a leisurely expression.
“Is the room prepared according to the Emperor’s status?”
It was an unexpected question, but the butler replied calmly.
“The time to prepare was short, but we have done our best. Under the Duke’s orders, it has been prepared with more elegance than the Duke’s own chambers.”
“Hmm. Then is that the only room in this castle suitable for the Emperor to stay in?”
Though he didn’t know the intention behind the question, the butler skillfully hid his confusion.
“I apologize, but yes, that is correct.”
Hearing the answer he wanted, a smirk hung on Kaisertern’s lips.
“Then it cannot be helped.”
“Pardon…? What do you mean…?”
The butler carefully watched the Emperor’s face, bewildered. But Kaisertern simply brushed it off with a smile on one side of his mouth.
“Never mind that. Now, let us all head to bed.”
“Yes, it has grown late indeed.”
At his word, everyone rose from their seats.
“Good night, Your Majesty.”
“Have a peaceful night, Your Majesty.”
Everyone exiting the drawing room offered their goodnight greetings before parting ways. Roabellin also bowed and was turning toward her own room when it happened.
“Empress.”
At Kaisertern’s low, tender voice, Roabellin turned back.
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
“Our room is this way, I’m told.”
“Pardon?”
While Roabellin failed to grasp the meaning, Itanistad—who immediately caught on to the intent—flushed as red as a furnace.
“Your Majesty! That is not allowed!”
But Kaisertern remained nonchalant, wearing an expression that said, ‘Why not?’
“What isn’t allowed?”
“The two of you are engaged, but you are not yet married!”
For a man and woman to share a room before marriage was officially taboo among the Imperial Family and nobility. Of course, they already had a child together, and since it was the Emperor’s wish, such customs could be ignored without much consequence. However, Itanistad didn’t want to hand his precious sister over to that man so easily, no matter what excuse he had to use.
“That is true. But Duke, did you not hear just now? There is only one room in this castle suitable for an Emperor. The Empress is equal in status to the Emperor; surely you wouldn’t suggest she stay in an inferior room?”
It sounded plausible at first glance, but it wasn’t.
“I—Inferior! It may not be perfectly decorated yet, but this is still the Duke’s castle! I have naturally prepared one of the best rooms for the future Empress.”
Watching them, Roabellin thought Itanistad looked ready to breathe fire from his nose. Yet, Kaisertern remained unbothered.
“Of course you have. But that doesn’t mean it was prepared on the same level as the Emperor’s room, does it? The Empress is now a ruler of this Empire alongside me. Making her stay in a room the Emperor cannot occupy would be an act of disloyalty by the House of Hertenes.”
This was practically a masterclass in making up logic—in other words, it was stubbornness. But at the magic word ‘disloyalty,’ Itanistad couldn’t help but flinch. After all, he held the heavy responsibility of being the Head of a Ducal House.
Unable to watch them any longer, Roabellin spoke up cautiously.
“Um, Your Majesty. I am fine. I’ve lived in much worse places than this.”
Kaisertern spoke as if he had been waiting for her to say that. To emphasize her status, he used even more formal language, despite the lack of outsiders listening.
“That is something that breaks my heart. Which is why I want to give you only the best from now on. And have you forgotten what I said? Everything the Empress does represents the majesty and face of the Prahenfelt Imperial Family. Now, for the sake of the Imperial dignity, you must enjoy only the best seats, the best clothes, and the best food.”
Roabellin flinched at the phrase ‘Imperial dignity’ and bit her lip. Having lightly suppressed the two siblings trying to stop him, Kaisertern smirked with a look of victory. He stepped closer to Roabellin and naturally wrapped an arm around her waist.
“As you know, it has been a long time since we met, and we have much to discuss. The Empress and I shall go to our room to catch up on old times, so everyone else should head to bed.”
‘What do you mean “discuss,” your mind is probably pitch black with schemes…!!!’
Itanistad had words filling his throat, but he couldn’t bring himself to say them.
“Then… have a… peaceful night.”
Itanistad offered his greeting reluctantly, while Estina and Elina bowed politely to the two of them.
“Oh, everyone, good night…”
Roabellin, who had received their greetings while half-clung to Kaisertern, offered an awkward farewell.
“Let’s go.”
He turned immediately while holding her waist. Roabellin felt as though he was in more of a hurry than usual.
‘I wonder why? He isn’t usually such an impatient person.’
Through his hand and arm wrapped tightly around her waist, she felt an inexplicable sense of excitement and thrill.
As they turned around, the butler hurried ahead to lead the way. As soon as they reached the third floor where the room for the Emperor was located, Kaisertern looked at the butler.
“You said it was the third room?”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
“Understood. You may leave now. Good work.”
The butler was bewildered, as his role was to open the door, briefly introduce the interior, and then exit. However, since he was before the Emperor, he had no choice but to bow deeply.
“Yes, Your Majesty. Have a peaceful night. If you need anything, please pull the bell cord next to the bed.”
“I will. Understood.”
As soon as the butler bowed once more and disappeared down the stairs, Kaisertern grabbed Roabellin by the back and under her knees, scooping her up in one motion.
“Eek! W-what are you doing!”
“I don’t want you to have to walk so much.”
His way of speaking had shifted back to his usual casual tone.
“I—I’m not so weak that I can’t walk this far…!”
“I know. It’s more that I’m in a hurry.”
Indeed, Kaisertern’s pace as he carried her was very fast.
“What? Why are you in such a hurr—”
Before Roabellin could finish, they reached the room. Instead of using his hands, which were busy holding her, Kaisertern used his magic to thrust the door open. It was hard to tell if the thumping sound was from his footsteps or his heart.
The room was indeed perfectly prepared so as to be suitable for an Emperor, but there was no time to admire it. Heading straight for the large bed the moment they entered, Kaisertern set Roabellin down and immediately climbed over her.
“Kya, this…!”
Roabellin’s eyes went wide, startled by the frantic pace of events. Roabellin lay on the bed, and Kaisertern leaned over her with his hands planted on either side of her head, locking eyes with her.
“…”
The two of them caught their slightly ragged breath, staring into each other’s eyes in silence for a moment. In that brief time, many scenes flashed through their minds. The day they first met at the Aventador hunting grounds, the day they met again in Vicentium, the days at the Imperial Palace when they loved each other, and the days spent apart yearning for one another…
And Roabellin thought back to her 20th birthday.
‘I boldly left home saying I would have the Emperor’s child. Back then, I never imagined I would truly end up in a relationship like this with him.’
But her thoughts didn’t last long. Kaisertern, who had been watching her silently, raised a hand and gently cupped her cheek. His hand was large and warm. Roabellin wore a gentle smile and placed her hand over his. Kaisertern moved his fingers to lightly stroke her cheek and hair.
“Looking back, I think I’ve been thirsty for you my whole life since that day when I was fifteen. Since I finally succeeded in meeting you like this… I will never let you go again.”
Roabellin looked up at him and spoke, a smile gracing her lips.
“Me too. I won’t run away again.”
Kaisertern smiled happily at her words. Soon, his face slowly descended toward hers. Naturally, Roabellin’s long eyelashes fluttered closed, and the two began a soft kiss.
It started gently, but perhaps his earlier words about being in a hurry weren’t just talk, as Kaisertern’s kiss soon deepened. His hands grew busy as well.
“I love you, Roabellin. I love you… my wife, my Empress…”
Kaisertern, hugging her so tightly she felt breathless, poured words of love into her ear frantically.
“Mmph, Your Majesty, you’re too fast…”
Even in this moment, Kaisertern did not fail to point out her choice of words.
“I thought we agreed not to call me that in bed.”
“Ah, Kai…”
Roabellin quickly corrected herself, but Kaisertern didn’t miss even the smallest opportunity.
“You called me ‘Your Majesty’ while we’re alone, so that’s a punishment.”
Speaking mischievously, Kaisertern left a kiss mark on her collarbone. It was in a position that might or might not be visible to others depending on the design of her dress. Looking at it, he wore a playful grin.
“If you call me that again tonight, I’ll leave one on your neck next time.”
“!!”
***
Breakfast the next morning. The only people who looked remotely human were Kaisertern and Elina.
Itanistad had been a nervous wreck worrying about Roabellin; Estina, staying in the room directly below them, had been kept awake by the various sounds echoing through the floorboards all night; and the two culprits themselves had, naturally… barely slept a wink. Among those who hadn’t slept, only Kaisertern—possessing stamina far beyond that of a normal human—managed to maintain a pristine appearance.
As everyone except the two of them struggled through a light meal with weary faces, Kaisertern spoke up.
“I intend to return to Vicentium today.”
Itanistad, sporting dark circles that reached his cheekbones, looked at him and asked, “Ah, you’re leaving already. Then Roa—I mean, Her Future Imperial Majesty—will join you once a residence is prepared at the Palace…”
Kaisertern cut him off mid-sentence.
“No, both the Empress and the Prince will be coming with me today.”
Itanistad’s eyes went wide at the unexpected timeline.
“Pardon? But we’ve barely had any time together as siblings since we reunited. Could the future Empress not stay here at the Duchy a little longer to prepare her body and mind?”
Itanistad was desperate, but Roabellin, the person in question, was just peacefully eating her meal. It was clear she and Kaisertern had already discussed this. Sure enough, Kaisertern’s refusal was crisp.
“That won’t do.”
“May I ask why you are so insistent on this?”
At his question, Kaisertern took a spoonful of soup and said nonchalantly, “Because the Empress might already be carrying a second Imperial grandchild.”
“WHAT?!”
At the completely unforeseen answer, Itanistad’s already heavy brain simply gave up and stalled. He barely managed to piece a thought together.
“What on earth… Your Majesty only arrived yes—ter—day—!!!”
He seemed to realize the implication mid-sentence. His eyes bulged, and he froze with his mouth hanging open. Kaisertern looked at him with a mischievous smile.
“Indeed. She could be one day into a pregnancy.”
Silence fell over the dining room. Everyone sat with their mouths agape, unable to find words.
‘You… you…! %#$#^&*!’
Understanding the situation, Itanistad unleashed a torrent of curses internally, while Roabellin’s face, ears, and even her neck—where the kiss mark remained—turned bright crimson. Kaisertern, the only relaxed person in the room, continued.
“For that reason, I intend to take her to the Imperial Palace immediately. As you know, any woman who might be carrying an Imperial heir must be placed under the protection of the Palace at once.”
Itanistad attempted one last, timid rebellion.
“But Your Majesty, Roabellin is not yet the official Empre—”
“Status does not matter. Even if she were a mere consort rather than the Empress, she would still be protected at the Palace until a safe delivery. Do not worry. I will assign the best Imperial physicians and experienced ladies-in-waiting to care for her. If you miss your sister, you should hurry and follow us to the capital.”
Left with no more excuses to stall, Itanistad finally declared his surrender.
“…I understand…”
After spending a little more time with her reluctant family, the Imperial family and their retinue left the Duke’s castle in the afternoon and set off for Vicentium.
***
Count Raymond returned to the Imperial Palace ahead of them to make preparations. He announced that a national wedding was imminent and ordered that a residence for the future Empress be readied in haste.
“Whaaaat? A national wedding, all of a sudden?”
“Yes, I know it’s sudden, but prepare as quickly as possible. And while His Majesty will reveal it himself upon arrival, there is even more shocking news than the wedding.”
Since Ezekiel’s existence was to be revealed by Kaisertern himself, Count Raymond forced his itching mouth shut.
Roabellin entered Vicentium quietly via the gate with Kaisertern and Ezekiel. Kaisertern had wanted to hold a parade welcoming Roabellin from the city entrance to the palace, but he relented at her urging.
“No one in Vicentium even knows who I am yet. A parade would be better after the wedding ceremony.”
“If I were a citizen, I think I would start praising you the moment I saw you.”
“My goodness. Kai, were you always a person who could say things like that?”
“Only for you. Ah, there is something I must tell you. From the moment you step into the Palace, you are the Empress. Do not bow your head to anyone, and do not apologize to anyone. You hold the same power as I do, and you must be treated the same as I am everywhere. I believe you know this as a prepared Empress, but I say it out of concern.”
She couldn’t help but realize he was worried she might feel intimidated because her official status inside the Palace was still vague. Had anyone else in the world ever received such care and meticulous attention from an Emperor? Roabellin felt her heart grow warm.
“I’ll keep that in mind. Thank you.”
As the two entered the Palace, hundreds of palace staff were lined up and bowed in unison.
“We greet His Imperial Majesty and Her Future Imperial Majesty.”
Kaisertern and Roabellin acknowledged them with a slight nod. Soon, a middle-aged woman approached them and bowed.
“It is a pleasure to meet you, Her Future Imperial Majesty. We sincerely welcome you to the Imperial Palace. I am Molly, the Head Maid. I hold the rank of Countess.”
Roabellin, who hadn’t immediately recognized the woman’s face because her head was bowed, grinned upon hearing the introduction.
“Is it truly the first time we meet?”
“Pardon…?”
Countess Molly looked up reflexively, her eyes widening.
“Huh? Uh… Uh?! Wait a moment, Yu… Yulli?”
Due to the gap of over a year, her reaction was delayed. But because of Roabellin’s beauty, anyone who had seen her could never easily forget her. Judging by the reaction, the usually composed and etiquette-driven Countess Molly was truly shocked. Roabellin wore a pleasant smile.
“Correct. That was a pseudonym. My real name is Roabellin Hertenes. This is the first time we meet under this name.”
The Countess’s eyes grew even larger.
“Hertenes… as in, the Ducal House…?”
“Yes. We can talk about the details later.”
Snapped back to reality, the Countess quickly bowed deeply again.
“I have committed a discourtesy to Her Future Imperial Majesty in my confusion!”
“No, I completely understand. It’s fine.”
“I will ensure such a thing never happens again. I shall guide you to the place where you will stay until the wedding. Please follow me.”
Perhaps because she was in front of the Emperor and many others, the Countess was even more formal and polite than usual. She was likely suffering internally, remembering the days she had nagged ‘Yulli’ to seduce the Emperor. Seeing that, Roabellin smiled silently, reminiscing about her days as a maid in the Emperor’s Palace.
Roabellin was led to a detached palace belonging to the Empress’s Palace, while Kaisertern headed straight to the main palace, his workspace. He immediately called for an emergency meeting of the high-ranking nobles. The nobles, who had dropped their personal schedules to gather in a hurry, looked bewildered.
“I have called you here suddenly because of a very important matter.”
After scanning the faces of the nobles lined up at the long table, Kaisertern dropped a massive bomb.
“I intend to hold a national wedding with the Young Lady of the House of Hertenes.”
It wasn’t an ‘I wish to,’ but a ‘I will’—a unilateral declaration that had already been decided. Since it was completely unexpected, the shocked nobles were speechless. A silence similar to the one at the Duke’s dining room this morning filled the air.
‘I seem to be feeling this kind of atmosphere quite often lately.’
As Kaisertern had this idle thought, the Prime Minister broke the heavy silence and asked cautiously, “The House of Hertenes… currently, wasn’t the Duke the sole member? Where did a Young Lady suddenly come from…?”
Kaisertern answered as if he had been waiting.
“A good question. The Young Lady is the current Duke’s sister. I believe some of you know the story of how their family was shattered by an unfortunate incident when they were children. Most of the family died or were scattered. Since then, the Young Lady lived without knowing whether the Duke was alive or dead until they reunited recently and her status was restored. When I was fifteen and attending the King of Aventador’s birthday banquet, I met the Young Lady. My connection with her began then. As the one who met her then, I personally guarantee her identity.”
For a man who usually gave concise answers to subordinates, this was a remarkably detailed and dedicated explanation. The nobles had many things they wanted to pry into regarding this marriage with a suddenly appearing Duke’s daughter, but they couldn’t contradict the Emperor himself guaranteeing her identity.
However, there were many nobles who had been eyeing the vacant seat of the Empress. Thus, instead of questioning her identity, they decided to attack from a different angle.
“That… what kind of grudge did the family incur to be attacked so severely? Did they perhaps commit misdeeds in Aventador… Ah, I’m not saying she did, but… the reputation of the family is very important for an Empress, is it not? In that sense…”
The Minister of Internal Affairs faltered as Kaisertern’s gaze sharpened, quickly amending his words. Kaisertern replied before the man could even finish.
“A good question. I intended to announce this anyway.”
“Pardon?”
“The House of Hertenes was a prestigious Ducal family with a high reputation in the Kingdom of Aventador. This is a fact you can verify by checking with Aventador. It is a prestigious family known as the ‘House of Queens’ for producing an Aventador Queen in almost every generation for a thousand years.”
“How did such a family…”
The question was why they were attacked.
“That was the doing of Heymelic, who was the temporary Emperor at the time. I only learned this fact recently. When I fell in love with the Hertenes Young Lady at fifteen and ‘exploded,’ Heymelic found out and destroyed the family to keep me in check.”
“Wha—What?!”
The nobles gaped at the unexpected turn of events. In particular, the faces of several nobles who had held high positions during Heymelic’s regency turned purple. They feared being caught in the crossfire just by association.
“It is true. I have re-verified this through several routes. That is why I moved Heymelic to the dungeon last year. While it was done for his personal goals, it was also a crime committed using the power of the Emperor at the time, so I plan to officially apologize to the House of Hertenes in the name of the Prahenfeld Imperial Family.”
An official apology from the Imperial Family admitting fault was an event so rare it had only happened a handful of times in the thousand-year history of the Empire. It was because it acknowledged that the Imperial Family was not infallible and often involved giving the other party significant business interests as compensation.
“Ah… Your Majesty. Rather than an official apology from the Imperial Family… wouldn’t it be better to frame it as a personal apology from Heymelic… I mean, the criminal…?”
While the nobles who were once Heymelic’s subordinates couldn’t even open their mouths, the Minister of Finance—who was unrelated to him—barely spoke up. Even he found it awkward to mention the traitor Heymelic, so his voice trailed off. But Kaisertern was firm.
“No. It was an act committed by someone sitting on the throne of the Emperor, using the power and information of the Emperor. It will be an apology on the Imperial level.”
Kaisertern did not back down, raising the apology for the House of Hertenes to the highest rank.
“And, there is one more piece of important news.”
The nobles, exhausted by the series of shocks and thinking, *‘What now? Surely there can’t be more shocking news,’* looked at the Emperor and were so surprised their eyes nearly popped out.
“The future Empress gave birth to an Imperial Prince last year. He entered the palace with me this time. We plan to officially announce it after a formal paternity test, but I am informing you in advance.”
“Pardon…? Last year…?”
“What on earth does that mean…”
For a moment, they felt as if they had been asleep all of last year and had woken up today to receive a backlog of past news.
“I will explain the details later. The important thing is that I am marrying the Duke’s sister, who is the mother of the Prince. Should not the first Imperial grandchild be my legitimate heir?”
“…”
Even the nobles who had been trying to push their own daughters or nieces into the seat of the Empress could no longer offer any resistance. Only one person—the Minister of Administration, who had no daughters in his family—offered a bright congratulatory message.
“It is sudden, but congratulations on the birth of an Imperial grandchild, Your Majesty! Now that we have both an Empress and a Prince, the Imperial Family will be secure!”
The other nobles, catching on, quickly joined the congratulatory parade.
“Congratulations on the national wedding, Your Majesty!”
“It is a double blessing bestowed upon Prahenfeld by the heavens!”
The cabinet meeting that began in silence ended in a heated celebratory atmosphere. He had successfully secured the consent of the noble representatives for the wedding.
A few days later, Heymelic’s actions and the Imperial Family’s apology were announced nationwide. The public was shocked by the former Emperor’s inhumane crime, and that shock led to sympathy and favor toward the Duke of Hertenes and his sister, who were noble-born innocent victims.
Additionally, Kaisertern ordered people to spread rumors about the history of the “House of Queens” and their mysterious powers. Thanks to this, titles like ‘The daughter of a family that produced Queens for a thousand years’ and ‘The daughter of God with divine power’ were added to her name. Public opinion quickly formed that ‘There is no one more suitable for the Empress’s seat than the Hertenes Young Lady.’ In this way, Roabellin rapidly gained legitimacy as the Empress from both the nobility and the common people.

Meanwhile, Roabellin stayed in a temporary residence prepared in a detached palace of the Empress’s Palace during the wedding preparation period. An Imperial designer had just come by to take her measurements for a whole new wardrobe.
“Your Imperial Majesty.”
It was Countess Molly, the Head Maid. Although the wedding hadn’t happened yet, she was serving Roabellin by addressing her as the Empress.
“Yes, what is it?”
“A guest has arrived for Your Majesty.”
“A guest? Is it my brother?”
“It is not the Duke, but someone sent by His Imperial Majesty.”
“His Majesty sent someone? Who could it be… Tell them to come in.”
When Roabellin sat down in the drawing room, a knock followed almost immediately.
“Come in.”
The door opened, and someone entered cautiously—a tall, long-legged person who seemed to be hesitating awkwardly.
“Miss! …No, no, I greet Her Imperial Majesty the Empress.”
Scratching the back of her head after reflexively using the old title, it was Letis, whom Roabellin hadn’t seen since she left for Vicentium just before Ezekiel was born.
“My goodness! Letis!!”
Never expecting to meet Letis here, Roabellin jumped up in surprise.
“What happened? We were so worried when the communication tool was cut off! Are you safe? You didn’t go through anything terrible, did you?”
So happy to see her, Roabellin poured out a stream of worried questions.
“Oh, Miss—no, no, this mouth of mine!”
Letis slapped her own lips.
“Your Majesty. I’ll tell you everything one by one. First, as you can see, I am very healthy and perfectly fine.”
Letis sat on the sofa at Roabellin’s invitation and explained the events.
“After the communication tool was cut off, I was confined for several days in a guest room in the building attached to the banquet hall.”
“Confined?!”
“Well, it was only confinement in name. I couldn’t leave without His Majesty’s permission, but I could roam freely within the grounds, and since it was a guest room in the Imperial Palace, the food was great and I was comfortable. It was a bit stifling, but thinking back, it seemed like he intended to protect me from Radak’s other subordinates.”
She had been sent on an errand with a light heart, only to end up living in confinement for a long time.
‘Of course, as Letis said, it might have been for protection, but still…’
Roabellin’s face clouded with guilt.
“You’ve been through a lot, Letis. Because of us…”
Seeing the shadow on Roabellin’s face, Letis hurriedly waved her hands.
“No, no! I actually spent that time very productively.”
“Huh? How?”
“Haha, I was confined to the Palace, but I had freedom of movement within it. Since I had nothing else to do, I trained a lot in swordsmanship with the guards. At night, I read books in the Imperial Library, and if there was something I didn’t know, I asked the scholars coming in and out of the Imperial Research Institute. Even though I’m an only daughter of a Viscount, I became an orphan young and didn’t get to study much. I made up for it this time! Thanks to that, my swordsmanship and knowledge have improved significantly. I’ve also made so many acquaintances in the Palace.”
“…Huh?”
Since she seemed to have enjoyed herself more than expected, Roabellin felt a bit embarrassed for feeling guilty even for a moment.
“Then I heard that Your Majesty had arrived, so I rushed over. I really, really missed you—Your Majesty and the family. It’s good to see you again alive. Even better as the future Empress.”
Tears welled up slightly in Letis’s clear blue eyes. Roabellin also teared up and approached to embrace her, though since Letis was tall, it looked more like Roabellin was being held.
“Me too. I’m so happy to meet you again alive. Ah, that’s right. Just a moment.”
Roabellin called a maid and gave some instructions.
A moment later, the maid brought the family and Ezekiel, who were staying in the detached palace.
“Why did you call u— GAH!!!”
The family, who had been called without knowing why, entered with bewildered expressions, but their eyes went wide when they saw Letis.
“My goodness, Letis!”
“You were safe, Sir Knight!”
Letis’s eyes, already round, grew even wider when she saw Ezekiel being carried in by Lisa, who had become his nanny.
“Oh, is that the baby who was in Your Majesty’s womb back then?!”
“Abuu…!”
As Ezekiel happened to laugh and babble, Letis wore a peculiar expression.
“Oh… it feels like I’m watching the Emperor babbling.”
Roabellin shook her head with a slightly aggrieved face.
“Right? I hear that a lot. Even though he came out of my belly…”
“St—Still, he’s so cute, I think he takes after Your Majesty! Haha! More importantly, tell me everything about when and how you gave birth!”
Sitting together and sharing their stories, the family spent a warm and happy afternoon for the first time in a long while.
***
One week later, Kaisertern summoned the heads of every noble family in the capital and the most influential provincial families. Thanks to the high-ranking nobles who had gathered the previous week, rumors about the Young Lady of Hertenes and her family had already spread like wildfire.
‘Of course, I told them ahead of time specifically so they would spread the word.’
Today was the day to officially confirm, through the Emperor’s own voice, the existence of the future Empress and the Imperial Prince—news that had hitherto only existed as whispers in Vicentium.
“Thank you all for gathering. I trust you have heard the purpose of this assembly. Since it may be sudden, I shall briefly explain the circumstances of how I came to take the Young Lady of Hertenes as my Empress.”
Knowing that many were curious about how Roabellin, a Ducal Lady, had ended up giving birth to an Imperial Prince outside the palace, he decided to address that first. It was a necessary procedure to protect her honor and establish her legitimacy as Empress.
Since a fair number of people remembered ‘Yulli,’ who had worked as a maid in the palace, he couldn’t fabricate the story entirely. However, he couldn’t tell the whole truth either. After consulting with the House of Hertenes, he had crafted a narrative that blended truth with strategic fiction.
“The Young Lady and I first met years ago at the Aventador Royal Palace. It was roughly nine years ago. As is well known, her family effectively vanished due to the actions of the criminal Heymelich. Thus, I believed her to be dead. We were reunited only after the Young Lady entered the Imperial Palace as an employee. Having grown up in a royal court, she sought to serve the Imperial Family of our Empire. As you have heard, she hails from a family that has produced Queens for a millennium.”
The nobles, having already heard the rumors, looked intrigued by the legacy of the “House of Queens.” A family that had monopolized the seat of the Queen for a thousand years was a marvel to behold.
“Subsequently, I discovered her true identity and appointed her as my personal maid. Away from the public eye, we grew close, and soon, she bore the fruit of our love.”
At this point, many nobles who had hoped to make their own daughters Empress let out silent sighs. Although Ezekiel’s existence hadn’t been officially announced until now, the rumors had been so pervasive that every noble present already knew.
“I worked so hard to get my daughter in as a maid, and she was in the same palace but couldn’t pull that off?”
“The Emperor’s palace was full of beauties, yet there wasn’t a single rumor. I assumed His Majesty simply had no interest in women…”
“So that’s how it’s done?!”
Kaisertern scanned the frustrated faces of some of the nobles and continued.
“The House of Hertenes was a highly reputable family in Aventador, but at the time, they had not yet been restored. I judged that it would be dangerous for a woman without a supporting house to be known as the mother of the first Imperial grandchild. Therefore, I quietly moved her out of the palace while she was carrying the Prince. It was to buy time.”
Indeed, the very people who would have attacked a defenseless woman carrying an heir were the ambitious nobles sitting right here. They struggled to keep their expressions neutral, hoping the Emperor didn’t realize he was describing them as potential culprits.
“While she remained in hiding to protect the Prince, I located her brother, the Duke of Hertenes. To avoid detection by Heymelich’s remnants, he had been living under the name of the House of Ratnen. Thanks to the Duke’s business acumen, he was already financially stable by then.”
A few nobles who had long traded with the Ratnen Company nodded in understanding.
“And as you all know, the Duke has since performed extraordinary service for the Empire.”
One could interpret it as the Emperor intentionally elevating the House of Hertenes. However, Itanistad’s achievements in Gelayen were indisputable. The nobles quickly abandoned any thought of accusing the Emperor of favoritism; the young Duke was well-liked by both the nobility and commoners, and attacking him would surely backfire.
“The Young Lady gave birth to the Prince at the Duke’s castle, and I brought them both to the palace once the House of Hertenes had secured a firm standing.”
Some ministers who had seen Ezekiel in the palace knew the child bore a striking resemblance to Kaisertern. However, one noble who had not yet seen the child spoke up cautiously.
“Um, Your Majesty. While the birth of a Prince is a cause for national celebration… since he was born outside the palace, procedurally… a paternity… test might be considered necessary…”
Fearing the Emperor’s wrath, his voice trailed off into a whisper. To everyone’s surprise, Kaisertern looked relaxed. He was even wearing a faint smile.
“Of course. I was just about to mention that. I have already contacted the Temple. We shall all move to the Great Temple together right now. The future Empress and the Prince are already there, and we will conduct the paternity test immediately.”
“Pardon…?”
The nobles were stunned by his speed and decisiveness. If the Emperor was this confident, the result was a foregone conclusion. But since it was a command disguised as an invitation, everyone present had to act as witnesses to the test.

One hour later, at the Great Temple’s Main Hall. The nobles, who had been caught off guard, were even more shocked upon entering. Only the front seats for the nobility were empty; the general seating in the back was packed with commoners.
“Wow, I never thought I’d see the Emperor, the future Empress, and the Prince all in one day!”
“And an Imperial paternity test? We’ll never see anything like this again in our lives!”
Before the nobles had even set out, Kaisertern’s agents had gathered the people from the marketplaces, telling them to “come and witness a historic event.” Seeing the scale of the event, many nobles finally read the Emperor’s intention.
‘He’s already certain the Prince is his. He’s doing this in front of the people to cement the status of both the Empress and the Prince once and for all.’
Soon, when the High Priest, Kaisertern, Roabellin, and Ezekiel (carried by Lisa) appeared on the stage, the hall erupted in murmurs.
“Is that the lady who will be Empress? Whoa… is she human? Or a goddess?”
“The three of them together are the holiest thing in this temple…”
After the preparations were finished, the High Priest raised his hand to silence the crowd.
“We shall begin. Everyone, please be silent and focus.”
He first pricked the fingers of Roabellin and Ezekiel in turn. A drop of blood from each fell—*drip, drip*—into the prepared holy water. The blood dispersed for a few seconds, and then, suddenly, the entire bowl emitted a brilliant light. it was a mysterious, multi-colored glow, like an opal.
“Waaaaah…!”
While everyone marveled at the ethereal light, the High Priest made the formal declaration.
“A biological mother-son relationship between the Lady of Hertenes and Prince Ezekiel has been confirmed. Everyone here is a witness.”
Next was Kaisertern’s turn. As the Emperor stepped toward the High Priest and held out his hand, the hall fell into a sudden, heavy silence. The High Priest pricked his finger and let a drop of his blood fall into another bowl of holy water along with a drop from Ezekiel. The proof of the father-son relationship was the crux of this test. For a few seconds, no one in the temple even dared to breathe.
“…”
Seconds passed like an eternity.
Flash!
The holy water burst forth with an even more intense, radiant opalescent light.
“Wow, as expected!!”
Everyone in the hall cheered. Just as the High Priest opened his mouth to make the solemn declaration of paternity—
“Kya… Abuu!”
Sensing the joyous atmosphere, Ezekiel happily flailed his arms toward the light. In the process, the child’s tiny hand, infused with mana, brushed against the glowing water.
“Oh… no, El.”
Roabellin quickly moved the child’s hand away, but it was too late. Kaisertern and Roabellin hoped nothing would happen, but as if mocking their wish, the light began to change.
“Huh? What’s that?”
Something began to move within the rays of light emanating from the water. Surprised by the unexpected movement, everyone fixed their eyes on it. Rising like smoke from the center of the light, it quickly took shape.
“Wait, that’s…”
It was the phantom of a small dragon with a black body and golden eyes.
“Waaah, Kyaaa!”
While the adults were tense, Ezekiel—the one who had summoned the phantom—was delighted, reaching out for the dragon. The dragon emerged from the light and coiled around the child playfully before shattering into a shower of sparkling golden dust.
The hall went silent again at the unexpected sight. While the dragon power held by Kaisertern and Ezekiel wasn’t evil, dragons were traditionally beings that did not associate with temples. For a dragon’s image to appear in a temple, and from holy water no less, was extraordinary.
After a moment of thought, Kaisertern whispered to Roabellin.
“You said your power is of the divine type, correct?”
“Ah, yes. It’s a power inherited only by the daughters of our house…”
“Perhaps because he is your child, the dragon power El possesses feels no rejection toward divine power. He might become a strange dragon that is quite friendly with the divine.”
Roabellin nodded slightly at Kaisertern’s theory.
“True, our bloodline has never mixed with the blood of a dragon before. There’s no telling how it will manifest.”
Kaisertern smiled at Roabellin and took Ezekiel from Lisa. He stepped forward and proclaimed to the crowd.
“In addition to the mana passed down through the Imperial line, I possess the dragon power inherited from my mother. Today, Ezekiel has confirmed his status as my biological son not only through the holy water but by summoning the phantom of the dragon.”
Pausing for a moment, Kaisertern looked across the audience and declared.
“Based on the results of this sacred test, I declare Ezekiel as a Prince and my first Imperial heir.”
The people in the pews cheered, looking at Kaisertern and the child who looked exactly like him.
“Waaaaah! Long live the Imperial Prince!!”
Whether Ezekiel knew this was the day he officially gained a father or not, he simply rolled his gentle eyes.
After receiving the blessings of the people, Kaisertern stepped back toward Roabellin and wrapped his other hand around her waist.
“Now that he is recognized as the Prince, I shall hold a national wedding with the mother of the Prince, the Young Lady of Hertenes, at the earliest possible date.”
It was the wedding everyone had been waiting for. At his words, the commoners’ section erupted in a cheer so loud it felt like the temple would burst.
“Waaaaaaah!!! Long live the Empress!!”
Most of the nobles joined in the applause, and even those who had been displeased with the marriage eventually began to clap as they sensed the tide of public opinion.
Thus, the national wedding was officially proclaimed to all the people of the Empire. Under the Emperor’s command for the swiftest possible schedule, the Imperial Palace immediately went into full-scale preparation for the ceremony.
