Chapter 3
Upon returning to the Bayern Grand Ducal residence, Allendorf immediately summoned his secretary, Franz. As soon as Franz entered the office, Allendorf, looking restless, threw a sudden and out-of-context question at him.
“What kind of gifts do women typically like?”
“I beg your pardon? Where is this coming from so suddenly?”
Franz stared at his employer in disbelief. Only this morning, Allendorf had insisted on heading to the Ascania mansion to see his mother, and now, the moment he returns, he’s looking for a gift for a woman.
“Did you, by any chance, get turned away at the door by the Duchess again?”
“Ah, I forgot to mention that first,” Allendorf said, clicking his tongue as the thought belatedly occurred to him. “Distribute a press release to the newspapers as soon as possible. My mother and I have agreed to merge our households soon.”
“W-wait just a moment, Your Grace.”
Franz felt his mind go foggy. He took pride in his linguistic and cognitive abilities, but for the last few minutes, he hadn’t been able to follow Allendorf’s words at all.
“Are you saying… you reconciled with Duchess Ascania?”
“How else would I be moving in with her?”
“My goodness.”
The realization finally hit him, and his jaw dropped.
“Congratulations, Your Grace.”
“In exchange, your workload will increase significantly for the time being. I’m telling you now so don’t even think about running away.”
“Do not worry, sir,” Franz replied, his face full of motivation. “I trust the bonus will be generous enough to match.”
“Of course.” Allendorf nodded reassurringly. “Now, back to my first question. When will you give me an answer?”
“The first question… about gifts women like?”
“Indeed.”
“Is this gift for Her Grace, the Duchess?”
At Franz’s question, Allendorf suddenly fell silent. He rolled his eyes as if contemplating, then let out a sigh and shook his head.
“No.”
“Then, for which lady?”
“The Lady of Württemberg.”
“Aha. A gesture of gratitude for saving the Duchess, then.” Franz nodded as if he finally understood. “Leave it to me. I will prepare an appropriate sum of compensation and a gift to be sent to the Württemberg family shortly.”
“…”
“Will that not suffice?”
Despite his answer, Allendorf’s expression showed no signs of improvement. He sank into thought, his brow furrowed. An appropriate sum and a gift. It sounded reasonable enough.
But was it truly enough?
For reasons he couldn’t name, Ariana seemed to dislike him. To a man who had taken the adoration of women as a given, as natural as breathing, Ariana’s attitude had dealt him a significant shock.
But was that the only reason for this restlessness? Allendorf couldn’t quite understand it. He decided it was simply because she was the savior of his mother, Maria.
“…It’s not enough.”
“Pardon?”
“Lady Württemberg is my mother’s life-saver,” Allendorf said, his voice tinged with irritation. “An ‘appropriate sum and a gift’ couldn’t possibly be enough. It needs to be something special. Something any woman would be shocked and delighted by.”
Franz narrowed his eyes as he watched his employer’s uncharacteristic anxiety. To him, the reason Allendorf was fretting over the Lady of Württemberg seemed to be far more personal and emotional.
Of course, it wasn’t strange. Ariana von Württemberg was a beauty renowned as the “Daffodil of the Empire.”
“Hmm, I see.”
Well, the Grand Duke was a young man in his prime; it was about time he took an interest in the opposite sex. Compared to most men who started showing interest in their teens, he was actually quite late.
‘This is getting interesting.’
Franz suppressed a smirk and began to organize his thoughts.
As everyone knew, Allendorf was currently in talks for a marriage with the “Rose of the Empire,” Rosette. Barring any incidents, the engagement and marriage would have proceeded smoothly. Or rather, it’s more accurate to say it would have proceeded smoothly until now.
But in the midst of this, he was suddenly showing interest in Ariana. The man himself didn’t seem to realize it yet, but it was plain as day to Franz. As an employee, it was impious to have such thoughts about the Grand Duke, but he found the situation too thrilling to resist.
A little more poking, and things would get even more entertaining. Franz stole a glance at Allendorf. Fortunately, the Duke hadn’t noticed his ulterior motives yet.
“I think I know what kind of gift you’re looking for, Your Grace.”
“And what would that be?”
“When it comes to capturing a woman’s heart, there is no gift quite like a jewel, is there?”
He subtly used the phrase “capturing a woman’s heart,” but Allendorf simply nodded without taking offense.
“That sounds good.”
“I happen to know someone who runs a fairly large jewelry shop. I’ll ask them to check if they have anything good tomorrow.”
“There’s no need for that,” Allendorf replied unexpectedly. “Surely there isn’t anything more expensive than the ‘Red Camellia’ or ‘Angel’s Kiss’ anyway.”
“…!”
Franz’s jaw dropped. Seeing his employer’s reaction, he decided to act boldly.
“Are you planning to give Lady Württemberg the ‘Red Camellia’ or the ‘Angel’s Kiss’?”
“I’m planning to give her both.”
“I don’t think that is a very appropriate idea, Your Grace.”
“Inappropriate? Why?”
Franz answered with an air of self-importance. “Lady Württemberg is not yet in a close relationship with you, is she? Even if a woman loves expensive jewels, receiving such things from someone who is practically a stranger would naturally be burdensome.”
“Hmm…” Allendorf sighed and nodded. “You have a point.”
“In my opinion, the ‘Undine’s Tear’ would be just right. Its recognition is lower than those two, but it carries just as much symbolic weight.”
Allendorf nodded slowly, seemingly tempted. Franz, sensing things were going well, offered more suggestions.
“Also, it’s not good to just barge in and shove a jewel in her face. It’s better to start with less burdensome gifts and give the jewel later. There will be less resistance that way.”
“I see.”
“Leave the other gifts to me. I will select and prepare items that Lady Württemberg is sure to like.”
“You are truly capable, Franz.”
Allendorf praised him with a satisfied face. While Franz’s enthusiasm didn’t stem purely from professional duty, his employer was nonetheless very pleased.
It was Allendorf’s idea to include a “Message Stone” as one of the other gifts. He thought Ariana might be happy if he told her to share it with her best friend, who was always by her side. Franz was inwardly impressed by his employer’s surprisingly quick learning curve.
“She will surely be happy with this.”
“I believe so too.”
Allendorf looked at the box containing “Undine’s Tear” and found himself picturing Ariana’s face. While the jewel was Franz’s idea, the faint violet hue of the sapphire reminded him of her eyes, and he found he liked it very much.
***
The next day, the front pages of every morning newspaper in Alpensia featured a headline in massive font:
‘Grand Duke Bayern and Duchess Ascania: A Dramatic Reconciliation Between the Empire’s Leading Mother and Son!’
It was expected, but I felt like I was going to suffocate. I let out a sigh and folded the copy of the <Daily Alpensia> in half.
The article went into excruciating detail about the marriage and divorce of the previous Grand Duke and Duchess, her succession to the title, and the current Duke’s lonely upbringing. It even included unnecessary details about the Duke being turned away at her door.
Notably, my story was slipped in as well—how the dramatic reconciliation was made possible because I saved the Duchess.
“Phew…”
How on earth did things get so twisted? I leaned my head on my hand, letting out yet another sigh. Emma, by my side, was chattering away, oblivious to my turmoil.
“My goodness, I was so surprised! To think you and the Grand Duke would have a connection like this!”
‘First Josephine, and now you, Emma?’
I gave her a lukewarm look and shook my head. “Don’t get your hopes up, Emma. The person I saved was Duchess Ascania, not the Grand Duke.”
“Oh, don’t say that! Now that they’ve reconciled, you’ll naturally have many chances to socialize with him!”
‘Exactly. That’s the problem.’
I slumped back in my chair. I needed to think of a plan, but I was so drained I didn’t want to think about anything. It was all because of this damn newspaper. Could it not have come out just one day later? Those reporters were unnecessarily diligent…
But I couldn’t stay slumped forever. I took out a notebook and a pen.
“I’m not interested in a man who’s taken.”
“But the Grand Duke isn’t taken, is he?”
“He will be soon, so it’s the same thing.”
Just as I said that, the floor below suddenly became noisy with the sound of servants moving frantically.
“What is it?”
I stood up, confused. Emma looked equally puzzled and peered out the window.
“Oh, it looks like we have a visitor!”
“A visitor? Suddenly?”
No one was scheduled to visit today. Josephine was the only one who dropped by unannounced, but her arrival never caused this much of a stir. I walked over to Emma and looked at the carriage parked at the entrance.
“Wait…”
That carriage looked strangely familiar. Where had I seen it?
“Ah, I shouldn’t be standing here. I’ll go down and see who it is!”
“Okay.”
While I was lost in thought, Emma rushed out. A moment later, I heard someone running back up the stairs.
“My Lady!” Emma burst through the door, stomping her feet in excitement.
“What’s wrong, Emma?”
“G—Grand Duke Bayern is… in the hall!”
“What?!”
A chill ran down my spine, and I bolted from my seat.
‘No way…’
I practically tumbled down the stairs to the first floor. The hall was bustling with servants, and it was filled with an unusually large number of packages.
“Alphonse!” I grabbed the butler, who was passing by. He turned to me with a look of surprise.
“My Lady! I was just about to come up and tell you to come down.”
“Is it… is it true that the Grand Duke is here?”
“It is indeed true.”
The answer didn’t come from Alphonse. I froze, then slowly turned toward the voice.
“I apologize for dropping in without notice.”
A cold sensation seeped through my veins. I looked up at the man, who wore an annoyingly perfect expression, and grit my teeth.
“…Your Grace.”
“I didn’t mean to trouble you. I intended to leave after a brief thanks, but I brought quite a few things.”
“Thanks?”
The Grand Duke replied with a soft smile. “Did you not save my mother’s life?”
My heart hammered against my ribs—likely Ariana’s heart reacting to the man she loved.
’Ugh, shut up, you stupid heart!’
I lowered my head to hide my reddening face.
“I only did what had to be done. I think anyone in that situation would have acted the same.”
“You have a truly kind heart, Lady Württemberg.”
‘No. I definitely don’t.’
I hesitated, biting my lip. I wanted to tell him to get lost now that he’d said his piece, but as a noble, I couldn’t ignore social etiquette. And what were all these packages? It was a mess.
‘Could you not just take them all and go home instead of making our servants work?’
“I appreciate the sentiment, but I didn’t help Duchess Ascania to receive thanks from you, Your Grace. Even if I were to be rewarded, the Duchess’s gratitude is more than enough. The person I helped was the Duchess, not Grand Duke Bayern.”
The Duke stood still, seemingly lost for words. As the silence stretched, I began to worry if I had offended him.
‘Wait, why am I worried about offending him? Isn’t that actually better for me?’
Just as I was spiraling into confusion, the Duke finally spoke.
“There is a flaw in that logic, as you are also my benefactor.”
‘What is he talking about?’
I looked up at him. He stared at me—causing my heart to jump again—then slowly lowered his gaze.
“If you hadn’t saved my mother then, I would never have been able to meet her or reconcile with her again. My life would have been plagued by regret forever.”
“…”
So that was it. I fell silent, feeling a sudden gravity. Because <How to Captivate the Male Lead> begins after the Duchess’s death, I knew all too well how he had changed in that timeline.
I still remember the scene where Allendorf first appeared in the novel:
If a human were made of frost and ice, it would be the man standing before her. His expressionless face and cold gaze seemed indifferent to any worldly joy or sorrow, and his eerily red eyes suggested frozen blood rather than flame.
When Rosette sat down, Allendorf asked in a voice so cold it was repulsive, “What is your business?”
“We’re betrothed, aren’t we? I heard my fiancé was handsome, so I came to take a look.”
“Betrothed?” He let out a scoffing laugh. “I have never acknowledged you as my betrothed, Lady Martinez.”
“Does that mean you intend to defy your grandfather’s will?”
“I decide my own life. A will from an old man long in his grave cannot dictate it.”
“…”
“But Lady Martinez, it seems your way of thinking is different.”
Fine words, Rosette thought cynically, yet she felt a strange competitive fire rising at his attitude.
“Ways of thinking can change over a lifetime. For both me and you.”
“…”
“Shall we make a bet? To see which of us changes faster.”
She decided then. She wanted to make this man, this block of ice, truly hers. She wanted those red eyes to burn whenever he saw her, to make this arrogant, cold man so crazed with love that he would kneel before her in humiliation…
Thinking back on that scene, I really emphasized with Rosette. Even if I’d lost my taste for the novel itself, I had to admit: I preferred the cold, broken Allendorf. Isn’t that how it is? There’s more satisfaction in breaking a man who seems like he wouldn’t bleed even if you stabbed him.
Compared to that, the current Duke seemed too… easy. A kind, warm man is nice, but I didn’t feel that same desire for him as I did for his “cold beauty” version.
Still, I truly was glad he reconciled with his mother. To be honest, I only found him difficult because of Rosette; I didn’t have any personal grudge against him.
‘Why were you born a male lead and made life difficult for everyone?’
I glanced at the servants standing around us, looking lost. Emma was mouthing words and pointing toward the drawing room. She wanted me to offer him tea.
‘Ugh… if I send him away now, it will affect my father’s reputation.’
I didn’t want to, but I had no choice. The Duke was a guest in our home, so I had to entertain him in my father’s stead.
“I was a bit flustered and kept you standing. It’s a bit late, but would you like to stay for a cup of tea?”
He gave a polite, formal refusal. “No, it’s quite alright.”
‘Ah… I really want to just send him away.’
I suppressed the urge to say, ‘Fine, goodbye then,’ and clenched my fist.
“It wouldn’t be polite to send away a guest who came all this way. Especially since you are the son of my chaperone, Duchess Ascania.”
My jaw tightened as I said “son of my chaperone.” If only I could turn back time to before yesterday. I’ve already experienced possession, so why not regression? I would give anything to go back just one day.
‘But do I have to die once to regress? I don’t like the sound of that…’
I forced a professional smile at Allendorf. He hesitated for a moment—likely out of politeness—then nodded.
“Then I shall stay for a moment.”
‘Sob. I truly despise this life as a Count’s daughter.’
* * *
As the Grand Duke and I headed toward the drawing room, the servants, who had been lingering awkwardly, began moving busily once again. I asked Emma, who was hovering nearby, to bring some tea and then personally guided him into the room.
Perhaps because the weather was exceptionally fine today, bright sunlight poured through the wide-open windows. I found myself briefly dazed, staring at his silver hair shimmering in the light and his statue-like face, before barely managing to snap back to reality.
‘…I really can’t trust myself. I know he’s the undisputed top-tier visual in this world, but still.’
Allendorf must have noticed my gaze, as he narrowed his eyes into a soft smile and looked toward me.
“Is something the matter?”
“Oh, it’s nothing.”
Startled like a child caught doing something wrong, I quickly turned my head away. That natural smile from the world’s most handsome man… it was a sight that put way too much strain on Ariana’s heart, which already harbored a crush on him.
‘…By the way, since when did Allendorf become a man who smiles so easily?’
I forced the question out of my mind and pointed toward a nearby sofa.
“Ah, please sit anywhere you like.”
“I understand.”
He immediately approached the sofa next to me and sat down. Very conscious of his presence, I sat on the sofa placed perpendicularly to his. I hadn’t been this nervous even at Duchess Ascania’s mansion… I suppose it’s because I have to deal with him one-on-one now.
After a short wait, Emma entered the drawing room with a tray of tea and refreshments. She shot me a subtle, meaningful look, then feigned indifference as she placed the items on the table.
‘Honestly, why is everyone so obsessed with playing matchmaker? I’ve said it a dozen times—this man isn’t my destiny!’
I lifted the teapot and filled the Grand Duke’s cup first. Our family gets tea leaves directly from a plantation in our southern estate, but I wasn’t sure if it would suit Allendorf’s palate.
‘Well, so what if it doesn’t? This is just a courtesy visit anyway.’
I gave Allendorf a bright smile as I handed him the cup.
“It’s nothing special, but I hope it suits your taste.”
Of course, those were just the typical hollow words of etiquette.
“Thank you. The aroma is quite wonderful.”
“Yes. It’s tea grown directly on our estate.”
While Allendorf took a sip, I picked up a chocolate truffle from the silver tray and popped it into my mouth.
‘Mmm. This deep, intense taste of 99% cacao. I love it.’
Back in my original world, I used to swear at whoever would eat 99% cacao, calling it “graphite.” But things are different now. If anyone dared call 99% cacao graphite in front of me now, I’d shove actual graphite into their mouth.
Seeing me eat the chocolate with such relish must have piqued his interest, as the Grand Duke followed suit and put a truffle into his mouth. It was only when I noticed his expression stiffen slightly that I hurriedly tried to stop him, handing him a napkin.
“Sp-spit it out!”
Despite my warning, the Grand Duke slowly chewed the chocolate and swallowed it. Seeing my pale face, he let out a short laugh, his eyes curving softly.
“I’ve already eaten it.”
“It must be… incredibly bitter…”
“It was delicious.”
‘What?!’
I stared blankly as Allendorf, as if to prove he wasn’t lying, picked up another chocolate. This time, instead of chewing, he let it melt slowly in his mouth while looking me straight in the eye.
“You seem to be quite fond of bitter tastes, My Lady.”
“Yes, well…”
“Truth be told, so am I.”
‘Pardon…?’
I quickly recalled the contents of <How to Captivate the Male Lead> in my memory. Now that I think about it, there was a scene where Rosette, having tea with the Grand Duke for the first time, internally cursed him, saying his palate was “perverted.”
‘Was that “perverted palate”… referring to this? How dare they insult 99% cacao!’
While I was internally cursing Rosette and the author of the novel, Allendorf gave me a smile filled with a sense of kinship.
“I’m pleased to meet someone with the same taste as mine. It’s quite rare.”
“Yes. Me too…”
I breathed a sigh of relief, but I could feel cold sweat on my back. It was a stroke of luck that the Grand Duke shared my taste; otherwise, serving such “hardcore” desserts to a first-time guest would have been a massive discourtesy.
I need to stay sharp. I’ll have to tell the kitchen staff not to do this next time.
The Grand Duke leaned back against the sofa, looking much more relaxed than before.
“My mother will be delighted to hear this. She also has a similar palate to mine.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes. In fact, this is related to why I came to see you today…”
He suddenly trailed off, his eyes shifting. I tilted my head, still puzzled, watching him.
“What do women like these days?”
“Pardon?” I blurted out dumbly. “What do you mean by that…?”
“Actually, I listened closely to the conversation between you and my mother yesterday. I’ve never been much interested in socializing with women, so I didn’t know… but yesterday, I felt a slight sense of crisis.”
He added with a sigh, “To be honest, you looked more like my mother’s child than I did.”
“Ah, I’m sor—”
“It is not something you should feel sorry for. The fault lies with me for not trying to learn about women’s interests.”
“…”
“I spent sixteen years away from my mother. Thanks to you, we’ve reconciled, but I still don’t know what she likes or what she’s interested in.”
The Grand Duke looked up at me and continued.
“I don’t want to miss this opportunity. Even though I can’t fill the void of the past years now, I want to spend the time ahead with her to the fullest.”
“I see…”
“So, I would like to shamelessly ask for your help.”
“What?!” I was startled, having been mindlessly nodding along until then.
The Grand Duke clenched his fists with a look that bordered on desperate.
“Flowers, hats… anything is fine. I want to know what’s trendy or popular among women these days. It is my dream to socialize with my mother as naturally as possible and talk about things she likes.”
“Your Grace.”
“I have no one around me to discuss these things with. My nanny died years ago, and my female cousins are mostly abroad. There are no other women I am close with.”
“…”
“My mother is very fond of you, Lady Württemberg. She volunteered to be your chaperone—something she’s refused to do for anyone else—and when I visited, she looked for you before she even looked for me.”
‘I see. I didn’t know that. It’s a bit embarrassing… No. Now is not the time for this.’
I snapped out of it and looked up.
“I understand your situation, Your Grace.”
“Then…”
“But I think it will be difficult for me to help you.”
At my answer, the bright face he had been wearing was instantly clouded over.
‘Wh-what… please don’t look like the sky is falling over something like this.’
“Why is that?”
“…”
I looked down, clutching my chest as it started to ache again.
‘Ugh… I said no with my mouth, but my heart really hurts.’
This is all because Ariana likes Allendorf too much.
“Don’t you have a more suitable conversation partner than me, Your Grace?”
“I don’t know what you mean by that.”
He looked genuinely confused.
‘She’s your fiancé! Would it kill you to remember her at a time like this?’
I sighed and answered in a gentler tone.
“You have your betrothed, Lady Martinez.”
“Ah…” He finally seemed to remember Rosette, looking troubled.
“I don’t think it’s desirable to seek advice from a woman other than your fiancé. I have no way of knowing how she might misunderstand the relationship between us later.”
“It is true that marriage talks are underway with the Martinez family, but…” Allendorf let out a reluctant sigh. “It’s something that proceeded regardless of my will… and in fact, I haven’t even met Lady Martinez yet.”
“But you will meet her soon. And you will officially get engaged to her.”
“That is not the case.”
‘Don’t lie to me, you jerk!’
I know everything. I know this man will eventually fall for Rosette’s “contract engagement” proposal and become her fiancé!
I carefully weighed my response. Right now, before Rosette intervenes, there’s still a chance to fix things. But if I miss the timing, my life could fall into an unpredictable abyss.
“This is a matter of my reputation as well. I want to avoid having private meetings with a man who is set to marry someone else.”
“It’s not that I have any ulterior motives toward you.”
The Grand Duke’s neck turned bright red as he made his excuse.
‘Hmm… who knew he had this side to him?’
To be honest, my heart was wavering. But regardless of Rosette or the novel’s plot, the optics were still bad.
“It’s not that I don’t trust your sincerity, Your Grace. It’s just that the appearance of it might look strange to others. That could cause problems for both our reputations.”
“I am fine, but… it is indeed a problem if it causes trouble for you, Lady Württemberg.”
‘Yes. Do you finally understand me now?’ I let out an internal sigh of relief. ‘Avoiding a death flag is so hard, sob.’
But then Allendorf said something unexpected.
“Then, could you at least help me prepare for my mother’s birthday party?”
“Pardon?”
‘How many times am I going to be shocked today?’
Allendorf, sensing an opening, spoke quickly. “My mother’s birthday party is in a fortnight. Since it’s the first one since our reconciliation, I want to prepare it with the utmost care.”
“Ah…”
“Since she is also your chaperone, you will have a lot to prepare as well. If we help each other, it will lessen the burden for both of us.”
‘…I’m in trouble. There’s no way out.’
I felt cold sweat breaking out. I hadn’t even thought about the Duchess’s birthday.
‘Argh! How can things get so tangled up?’
Duchess Ascania… why are you this man’s mother? And why is your birthday in two weeks? Sob. I felt a moment of resentment toward the Duchess as I cried internally. But as it stood, I had no choice but to collaborate with Allendorf until the birthday.
I turned my gaze toward Allendorf reluctantly. He looked like he had already regained his confidence, certain of my answer. I emphasized my point repeatedly so he wouldn’t misunderstand.
“I will only help you until the Duchess’s birthday. After that, I won’t be able to continue helping.”
“Do not worry too much. I have understood your meaning.”
The Grand Duke answered confidently and then began to show me the gifts he had brought.
“These are strawberries grown on our estate. They are popular even in other countries for their size and sweetness.”
“I see. They look delicious.”
“These are cotton and silk brought from the East. I think they would look wonderful as a dress for you.”
“Ah, yes… thank you.”
“And this sapphire necklace is a family heirloom. There is no one in my family to wear it, so please take it.”
“No, I can’t accept something like this.”
When I recoiled in surprise, he firmly shook his head and forced the necklace into my hand.
“No. You must have it. You are the savior of my mother’s life.”
“But…”
“Compared to the value of my mother’s life, this is a mere trifle. My mother would scold me, saying I should have given you a more expensive jewel.”
‘Is that so?’
In the end, I found myself accepting the necklace.
“Thank you. I will cherish it.”
“You’re welcome.”
Allendorf finally smiled with a satisfied expression. I looked back and forth between the necklace in my hand and his face with suspicion.
‘I’ll believe him for now since he insists… but he really doesn’t have any ulterior motives, right?’
Afterward, we discussed the details of the Duchess’s birthday party. Duchess Ascania was apparently even more influential than I thought, as members of the imperial family often attended her parties.
“Last year, the Empress and the Second Princess attended. The Empress is an old friend of my mother’s.”
“I see.”
My ears perked up at the mention of the imperial family. After all, the person who killed Ariana in <How to Captivate the Male Lead> was the arrogant Crown Prince, Lydis.
Lydis, who was in a (one-sided) competition with the Grand Duke for Rosette’s heart, accidentally learns that Rosette fears Ariana’s existence. Witnessing a kiss between the Duke and Rosette, he becomes so emotional that he kills the innocent Ariana. Something about how if she disappeared, Rosette would finally look at him.
Rosette, who basically had her problem solved for her thanks to Lydis, turns her back on the Crown Prince completely after that. And while she feels some pity for Ariana, she also feels self-loathing at the relief that Allendorf is now hers.
‘It’s the ultimate soap opera plot, but amazingly, this was the most popular episode in the novel. Ah… I’m sure my possession as Ariana is karma for my past comments.’
I fell into a temporary gloom.
“Is something wrong?”
I hesitated and then made up a suitable excuse. “It’s just… Duchess Ascania and I live in such different worlds.”
“That is…”
“I’m worried that someone like me might tarnish the Duchess’s reputation.”
It feels like my improvisation skills are improving every day since I became Ariana.
“Do not think that way,” the Grand Duke comforted me with a sincere face.
‘But you know what? The root cause of all my worries is you!’
“But…”
“My mother has gained a second life thanks to you. And I wouldn’t have been able to reconcile with her without you either.”
“Do you… think so?”
“I do.”
I pretended to be relieved and gave him a bittersweet smile. Allendorf looked momentarily taken aback, his eyes widening.
“What is it?”
“Ah, it’s nothing.”
Allendorf leaned back as if nothing had happened and finished his cooled tea. I let out a small sigh and chewed on another chocolate.
Since we had an agreement, I needed to meet or contact him regularly until the birthday. Meetings could take place at Duchess Ascania’s mansion to avoid misunderstanding, but the method of communication was a problem.
“Letters… or sending a messenger would be too conspicuous.”
“Are you worried about that?”
“Yes.”
Even if the Grand Duke didn’t mind, I had the meddling Emma around me. I was already worried about how much she would nag me every time a letter or messenger arrived from Allendorf.
“Then how about this?”
“This…?”
Allendorf immediately took a small box from his coat pocket and handed it to me.
“It is a Message Stone.”
“Ah…!”
A ‘Message Stone’ is a magical communication tool in this world. If two people share a set of these stones, they can transmit their voices to each other no matter how far apart they are. Think of it as a mini-mobile phone for one-on-one use. It’s an incredibly expensive item that even most nobles find hard to obtain.
“I brought this as a gift for you as well, and it seems we can share it.”
“Ah, yes…”
I accepted the Message Stone, feeling a bit overwhelmed by how smoothly everything was being arranged. Inside the box were two smooth, round blue stones that looked like turquoise.
“This one is for you.”
Allendorf took one stone and attached it to my sleeve like a button. I froze as I felt his fingers touch my wrist.
‘My heart is starting to race again.’
While I stood there stiffly, he attached the other stone to his cravat.
“I will take this one.”
“…Yes.”
I nodded, feeling my palms grow sweaty.
After exchanging the stones, the Grand Duke stood up, saying he had other business. I guided him out of the drawing room to see him off.
“Are you busy the day after tomorrow?”
“Ah, no. Not yet…”
“Then, can I see you at my mother’s home on the afternoon of the day after tomorrow?” He added with a smile, “It would be more comfortable to discuss the birthday party with her present.”
“That… makes sense.”
“Then I will let my mother know in advance.”
“Yes.”
We reached the carriage waiting at the entrance. Before boarding, he suddenly took my hand and, before I could react, knelt and kissed the back of it.
“…”
“I don’t think I gave you a proper thank you last time.”
Allendorf looked up at me with his red eyes. I felt a strange pain in my heart, as if it had been pierced by a sharp needle.
“Thank you for saving my mother, Lady Württemberg.”
“No, I—”
“Are you going to say anyone would have done the same? On that day, you were the only person among those by the river who heard my mother’s voice.”
“…”
“Someone else surely heard it too. But they wouldn’t have recognized it as the voice of someone asking for help.”
I looked down at him silently. He slowly let go of my hand with a gentle touch.
“It was your thoughtfulness, not ignoring even the smallest possibility, that saved my mother.”
“Your Grace…”
“I want to learn from your attentiveness and kind heart.”
Allendorf smiled with a somewhat bittersweet face. “Thank you once again. And for letting my mother and me reconcile.”
“Please don’t praise me so much. I might become conceited,” I said, blushing and looking down.
‘Ugh, it’s embarrassing when others do it, but twice as much when Allendorf says it!’
“You may be more conceited, My Lady.”
He immediately turned and boarded the carriage. After a moment of being frozen, I finally let out a small laugh and approached the carriage before it departed.
“I will see you again the day after tomorrow.”
“Yes. Goodbye.”
After the carriage left, I looked down at the Message Stone on my sleeve as if waking from a trance. Everything had flowed so naturally that I had even forgotten to decline such an expensive gift.
‘Well, it’s related to the Duchess’s birthday, so it should be fine, right? Allendorf won’t contact me for private matters anyway.’
I watched the servants move the gifts into the mansion. Emma handed me the sapphire necklace, as it was too precious to leave around. I put it carefully into my jewelry box.
It was the next day, through Josephine, that I learned the true identity of the sapphire necklace.
“That sapphire necklace… it might not be an ordinary item.”
I shrugged at Josephine’s words. “Of course not. It’s an heirloom from the Bayern Grand Ducal family.”
“Well, yes, but…” Josephine looked troubled. “I think it might be the one I know.”
“Is it a famous necklace?”
“Yes. Enough to buy three mansions?”
‘…What?’
Josephine quickly tried to brush it off when she saw my wide eyes. “Ah, I might be wrong. It’s not like there’s only one sapphire necklace in the world.”
“…”
“It must be… a different one.”
I suddenly became serious. “Phin. Can you… take a look?”
I hurriedly took Josephine to my room and opened my jewelry box. My hands were shaking.
‘It can’t be. Surely not.’
I pulled out the necklace, which featured a large sapphire—at least 70 carats—surrounded by small diamonds. Josephine’s eyes widened the moment she saw it.
“It was true…”
“What… what kind of necklace is this?”
Josephine looked at me with a flustered expression.
“It’s the sapphire necklace of the First Grand Duchess Bayern.”
Clatter.
The necklace slipped from my powerless hand.
“Have you ever heard of ‘Undine’s Tear‘?”
“Undine’s Tear?”
‘If I had known, I wouldn’t have accepted it.’
I shook my head.
“Well, the ‘Red Camellia’ or ‘Angel’s Kiss’ are more famous as Bayern jewels. But its symbolism is even greater than those two.”
“Greater symbolism? Why?”
“It’s a magical sapphire created by the first Grand Duke himself, with the help of a spirit. It’s the only sapphire of its kind in the world. It’s the jewel that symbolizes the love of the first Grand Ducal couple.”
‘…He’s crazy.’
I looked blankly at the necklace in my hand. I had accepted something much more monumental than I had ever imagined.
“Rina… since the Grand Duke gave you ‘Undine’s Tear,’ it means…”
At Josephine’s words, my heart began to thud so violently it felt startled. I flinched, quickly setting the necklace back down and shaking my head with all my might.
“…No.”
“Rina?”
“The Grand Duke told me himself. He said this was a token of gratitude for saving Duchess Ascania.”
“…”
“But I’m going to return it. This isn’t a jewel I can handle.”
Josephine couldn’t offer a rebuttal; she simply nodded. “…Yeah.”
After she left, I immediately attempted to contact the Grand Duke of Bavaria using the Message Stone. As the stone flickered and glowed, signaling the transition to communication mode, I gripped it tightly and raised my voice.
“Your Grace!”
— It is Lady Württemberg. I didn’t expect you to contact me so soon.
Allendorf spoke in an innocent tone, acting as if he had no idea why I was calling. I ground my teeth looking at ‘Undine’s Tear’ sitting before me.
“What kind of preposterous jewel did you give me?! I cannot accept such a thing!”
— I told you clearly that it was a necklace handed down in our family, and I gave it to you in return for saving my mother’s life. I am quite bewildered that you’re saying you can’t accept it now.
Was “a fairly historic item” and “an unused magic sapphire” the same thing?! I snapped back at him.
“You said it’s an unused one of a kind magic sapphire in the world!”
— My mother is also the only one of her kind in the world. Surely, a mere jewel cannot be more precious than my mother’s life.
“I never asked for something like this in exchange!”
— I am aware of that.
The Duke agreed with my statement with infuriatingly smooth composure. Just as I was about to retort, he cut me off.
— Oh dear. A guest has suddenly arrived, so I must cut this short. I shall see you tomorrow, Lady Württemberg.
“Wait! Your Grace…!”
Despite my desperate shout, the light in the Message Stone vanished instantly. I gripped the stone and grit my teeth.
The fact that ‘Undine’s Tear’ was expensive and unique wasn’t actually the most burdensome part. To be precise, while that was heavy, it wouldn’t have made me this panicked.
“…”
The biggest problem was that this sapphire was the symbol of the first Grand Ducal couple’s love.
“Ugh…”
I grabbed my head, feeling a headache coming on. If Allendorf had given me the ‘Red Camellia’ or ‘Angel’s Kiss,’ I would have recognized them and refused immediately. My mistake was letting my guard down because this jewel never appeared in <How to Captivate the Male Lead.>
I have to return it.
I searched my room and placed ‘Undine’s Tear’ into a reasonably elegant box. Feeling it was improper to return only the jewel, I asked the kitchen for some bitter desserts and the gardener for a lovely flower basket.
I wanted to prepare something more impressive, but since the recipients were the Duchess of Ascania and the Grand Duke of Bavaria, I settled for “socially appropriate.” Anything I could afford would likely seem trivial to them anyway.
Fortunately, Ariana was quite skilled with her hands. I decorated the boxes as elaborately as possible with ribbons, then massaged my stiff shoulders with a sigh.
Allendorf is going to make me age prematurely.
***
The next day, as promised, I headed to the Ascania mansion to prepare for the Duchess’s birthday party. Because of all the items I’d prepared alongside ‘Undine’s Tear,’ I boarded the carriage in a total daze. I had to grip the flower basket tightly to ensure the blooms weren’t damaged by the carriage’s swaying.
Duchess Ascania must have heard I was coming from Allendorf, as she was already waiting in front of the entrance before the carriage arrived. Seeing her radiant expression—as if welcoming an old friend—made my chest feel tight with warmth.
“How have you been?”
“I’ve been well. And you, Your Grace?”
At my question, the Duchess gave a shy smile and nodded. “Of course.”
“It is all thanks to Lady Württemberg.”
While the Duchess and I were exchanging warm looks, Allendorf, who was standing nearby, cut in as if he’d been waiting for the chance.
‘Ugh, why is this man so irritating every time I see him?’
I ignored Allendorf as naturally as possible and approached the Duchess. She took my hand firmly and spoke in a soft voice.
“It won’t do to keep standing here talking, so let’s go inside. I was so excited last night about the two of you preparing my birthday party that I could hardly sleep.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
As I’d thought before, the Duchess was a very down-to-earth and sweet person despite her rank. To think such a person divorced her cheating husband so ruthlessly… truly, you can’t judge a book by its cover.
The Duchess and I entered the drawing room hand-in-hand. Inside, tea and refreshments were already waiting. Allendorf and I sat on opposite sides with the Duchess in the middle. Seeing the flower basket and boxes I brought, the Duchess laughed with delight.
“You didn’t have to bring anything… what are these?”
“Ah, these are…”
I snapped out of my trance and pulled out the gifts. The Duchess opened the box and laughed with a girl-like joy.
“Oh my! These are all things I love!”
“I’m so glad you like them.”
I rubbed my palms against my dress, feeling incredibly nervous. To explain why I brought these, I had to bring up the fact that I received ‘Undine’s Tear’ from Allendorf first, right?
“Actually… I received an overly generous gift from the Grand Duke recently.”
“An overly generous gift?”
The Duchess looked at Allendorf across from me, still smiling. “What kind of gift was it?”
“It was ‘Undine’s Tear.’”
“Oh my.”
‘Ack. That man said it before I could!’
I was flustered for a moment, but relieved that the Duchess didn’t seem angry. After all, ‘Undine’s Tear’ was a Bavarian heirloom; it had nothing to do with her as the Duchess of Ascania anymore.
The Duchess playfully narrowed her eyes at Allendorf. “You should have given her the ‘Red Camellia’ or ‘Angel’s Kiss’ instead.”
“I was worried Lady Württemberg would find them too burdensome.”
“I suppose that’s true.”
‘Well, if it had been those two, I would have recognized them and refused immediately.’ But that didn’t mean ‘Undine’s Tear’ wasn’t burdensome. Especially since it symbolized the love of the first couple… even if the Duke had no ulterior motives, it was still a bit much.
“Then, did you bring these gifts as a return gesture?”
“Ah, no. That’s not it…”
The Duchess looked at me as if she finally understood. Feeling strangely apologetic toward her, I searched through the pile of boxes for the one containing ‘Undine’s Tear.’
But…
It wasn’t there. The box with ‘Undine’s Tear’ was gone.
“…”
“Lady Württemberg?”
I felt cold sweat on my back and looked up.
“…That’s right.”
“What is?”
I slowly swallowed hard at the Duchess’s question. It felt like time had stopped for me alone. It hadn’t even been a second, but it felt like hours. I forced my facial muscles to move.
“It’s true that I brought them in return for the gift of ‘Undine’s Tear.’”
“Oh, is that all?” The Duchess laughed and leaned back. “‘Undine’s Tear’ itself was a gift for you, so you didn’t need to return the favor to us. Isn’t that right, Allen?”
“That is correct.” Allendorf nodded with an air of leisure that was the polar opposite of my panic. “My Lady, you are quite meticulous.”
“…”
I gripped my fists, feeling dizzy. I’d dodged the immediate situation with improvisation, but if I had truly lost ‘Undine’s Tear,’ it would be a catastrophe. To lose the world’s only magic sapphire!
As my mind spun, Natalie, the Duchess’s maid, entered the room. She whispered something into the Duchess’s ear.
“Oh, already?” The Duchess looked at us with a slightly troubled smile. “I’m sorry. My physician has arrived for his house call earlier than usual.”
“I’m fine, so please take your time,” Allendorf spoke first.
“…”
“My Lady?”
“Ah.” I finally snapped out of it and looked at the Duchess.
‘Oh no, I was so distracted by the necklace!’
I nodded vigorously with a red face. “I-I’m fine too… please go ahead.”
“Then I’ll see you both in a bit.” The Duchess left the room with a faint smile.
“…”
Left alone with Allendorf, I clenched my fists. What should I say if he asks where the necklace is? What if someone stole it?
“Lady Württemberg.”
I was still in a daze, not even realizing he was calling me.
“Are you looking for this?”
Allendorf produced a very familiar-looking box from beneath the table. Wait… that box!
“Ah!”
I snapped to my senses and snatched the box from his hand. I was so startled my hands were shaking. The Duke watched me with a curious gaze, his eyes narrowed.
“It was because of this after all.”
“Y-y-you… how could you play such a prank…!”
I was so angry I couldn’t even speak properly. Do you know how much I worried?!
The Duke simply looked at me. Even with the necklace back, I was fuming. Tears of frustration even welled in my eyes.
“You’re too much!”
“…”
“There are things you should prank people with and things you shouldn’t, honestly…!”
“There seems to be a misunderstanding,” Allendorf said with a small sigh. “I simply picked it up in the hallway after you dropped it on your way to the drawing room.”
“…!”
“I didn’t even know what was inside.” He paused. “But looking at your reaction, I think I know now.”
“Ah…”
My knees felt weak, and I slumped into my seat. A mixture of embarrassment for my rudeness, relief, and shame washed over me. I felt my face burning. I covered my face and looked down.
“…I’m sorry.”
“…”
“For jumping to conclusions and getting angry…”
I wanted to find a hole and crawl into it. Even if Allendorf was bothersome, I should have at least listened to him first.
“Do you truly mean that?”
“Yes…”
“Then, please just keep ‘Undine’s Tear.’”
I looked up at him. Unlike what I’d expected, he was looking at me with a very peaceful expression.
“As I’ve said several times, I gave it to you as a reward for saving my mother. It is the price for her life, and as I said before, I believe even that is a cheap price compared to what you did.”
“B-but…”
“Are you planning to make me into an ungrateful rogue?”
I shook my head slowly, speechless. Allendorf, who had been maintaining a stern expression, finally looked satisfied. He stepped closer and tucked a stray strand of hair behind my ear.
“So, please keep it.”
“…Yes.”
“It sounds much better when you say that.”
Allendorf smiled at me. I felt my heart race and quickly turned my head away.
“This works out well.” He took the box from my lap, unwrapped it, and took out ‘Undine’s Tear.’ I watched him blankly.
He approached me and wrapped his arms around my neck. I almost pushed him away in surprise, but he ignored it and personally fastened the necklace around my neck.
“I knew it would suit you.”
“…”
Does this man even know what he’s saying? I felt awkward and toyed with the necklace. Allendorf narrowed his eyes and muttered something.
“I didn’t realize you could make a face like that.”
“Pardon…?”
When I looked up, he suddenly shut his mouth and turned his head away.
‘What… why is he making the atmosphere so awkward?’
And what did he mean by “a face like that”?
A moment later, the Duchess returned. I was glad the awkwardness broke and looked up at her.
“Oh, My Lady. You’re wearing ‘Undine’s Tear.’”
“Yes.”
The Duchess recognized it instantly. She looked back and forth between my face and the necklace, then sat down with a bright smile.
“I knew it would suit you.”
‘Like mother, like son. How do they say the exact same things?’
“Looking at this, Allen, your taste isn’t so bad after all. I was honestly a bit worried, but now I’m at ease.”
Allendorf shrugged. “I am my mother’s son, after all.”
“I thought you were a blockhead, but you’re quite good at flattery.”
“And since Lady Württemberg has agreed to help, there shouldn’t be any big problems.”
“That’s right.” The Duchess leaned toward me with a satisfied look. “It’s so lovely. Having a reliable son and a cute young lady together feels like a family gathering.”
“Is… that so?”
Maybe it was because Ariana didn’t have a mother, but I felt the Duchess was very familiar and kind. She was always sweet to me. She nodded and smiled.
“Of course.”
“Thank you for seeing me that way.” I bowed my head shyly.
‘She won’t scold me for saying this, right?’
“Actually… I’ve thought several times that I wish you were my mother.”
“Oh my.” The Duchess’s eyes sparkled mischievously. “That seems a bit different from ‘that’ meaning I was talking about.”
“Pardon…?”
“Ho ho. I’m just joking.”
It made no sense. When I looked puzzled, she covered her mouth with her fan to hide her laughter. What was it?
“Anyway, calling you ‘Lady Württemberg’ feels a bit distant and awkward,” she continued. “Don’t you think we should use more friendly titles now?”
“Ah… yes.” My heart raced as I gripped my teacup. “Please call me whatever you find comfortable.”
“I saw your friend calling you ‘Rina’ before.”
‘Ack. She was listening that closely.’
I felt embarrassed. “Yes. My father and close friends call me that.”
“Then may I call you ‘Miss Rina’ as well?”
“…Yes.”
‘Ugh. It’s just a nickname, why is it so embarrassing?!’
The Duchess must have liked it, as she muttered “Miss Rina” to herself a few times before looking at me. “Miss Rina.”
“Y-yes…”
“You can also call me whatever you like.”
“You… Your Grace?” I blinked. “In what way?”
“My old friends call me ‘Maria’ or ‘Mari.’”
‘Ack. That’s a bit…’
In this world, friends called each other by name regardless of age, but my original world’s values made it feel too rude to call someone my mother’s age by her name. I struggled to think of a friendly but respectful title. I cried internal tears.
“I’m sorry. For now, calling you ‘Your Grace’ is still…”
“Hmm. If that’s how you feel, I suppose it can’t be helped.” The Duchess smiled and nodded. “We can change the titles gradually.”
“…Yes.”
“I won’t rush you. I understand how you feel.” Unlike my fears, she was very understanding.
‘She’s such a good person… if only she wasn’t Allendorf’s mother.’
“Thank you, Your Grace.”
“No need to thank me for that.” She muttered as if to herself, “There are probably people who want to call you ‘Rina’ but can’t.”
“Pardon…?”
“I mean you’re so cute that many men must admire you.” She laughed and suddenly looked at Allendorf. “Isn’t that right, Allen?”
“…”
Allendorf didn’t answer for a moment.
‘What… what’s with this strange atmosphere? Allendorf, don’t tell me you…’
Just as a chill of dread ran down my spine, he finally spoke.
“That is correct.”
‘Phew, thank goodness.’
As I breathed a sigh of relief, he continued calmly.
“You may not realize it, My Lady, but there are many men targeting you behind the scenes.”
“I knew it.” The Duchess sighed with a worried face. “What if some unworthy scoundrels try to approach Miss Rina?”
“Do not worry.” Allendorf’s reply was much faster this time. “I will make sure those types don’t even get close.”
‘He talks a big game. In my opinion, as long as I watch out for HIM, my path is clear.’
But that was just my thought; the Duchess looked relieved.
“I feel much better hearing you say that, Allen.”
“My mother’s benefactor is my own benefactor as well.”
‘How long is he going to milk that ‘benefactor’ thing?’
Allendorf, who had been talking warmly with the Duchess, suddenly turned to me. I flinched and looked away like I was caught doing something wrong.
“So, you can rest easy.”
“…Yes.”
When I nodded, Allendorf finally looked satisfied and smiled. My heart skipped a beat, and I gripped my teacup, unsure of what to do.
