- Chapter 10 - Enemies Meet at the Jousting Tournament
I almost let a curse slip out.
Instead, I turned around, wearing a practiced, artificial smile.
“Greetings, Grand Heir Franz.”
Franz was gazing down at me with a gaze as cold as ice.
Attendants approached and bowed to him.
“Your Grace, the carriage is ready. It is time to depart.”
“Take the Lady and go first. I will follow shortly.”
The attendants headed toward Eliade, who was surrounded by nobles. Like the queen of social circles she was, she was drawing everyone’s attention.
She adorned herself with even more flamboyant speech and laughter, as if the defeat of the Schpern family was something she couldn’t even remember.
Oh dear. I can see right through it, though. You’re on the verge of exploding with rage, Eliade.
I’m not usually one to enjoy someone else’s downfall, but why does a laugh keep bubbling up?
I had planned to personally pay her back for throwing that fan at me sooner or later, but Calix gave me a refreshing dose of revenge first. It was a bit of a sticky situation, but it felt like chugging a cold soda in one go.
“I see you’re leaving early. Aren’t you attending the banquet? I think it’ll be quite fun.”
This is the situation, right? The winner enjoys the feast, and the loser slinks away with their tail between their legs?
The corners of Franz’s mouth curled upward. His eyes showed no trace of a loser’s anger or resentment.
“You are greatly mistaken. The victor has not yet been decided.”
My desire to tease him vanished instantly.
As expected of the ultimate villain—he won’t admit defeat so easily. To him, a loss in a joust is probably nothing more than a minor hiccup. I wondered just how many cards that white fox was still holding.
It was frustrating because, as I was now, I had no way of knowing what kind of plot he was hatching.
Even in the original novel, the internal power struggles weren’t detailed, and there were almost no scenes from Erika or Franz’s perspective. It was impossible for me to know the villain’s intricate plans.
“Is that so? Well then, safe travels, Grand Heir Franz.”
As I hurried to leave the spot, he grabbed my arm firmly.
“I believe this is a rude gesture.”
I stared him down, my eyes full of protest.
Franz also looked confused. He looked as if even he didn’t know why he had grabbed me. Yet, he did not release his hold on my arm.
“No, this is…”
He started to explain, then suddenly took on an inscrutable expression as if he had realized something.
“Ha, I see.”
The expression of a lost boy vanished as if washed away by a wave. In its place, his original cold nature slowly filled the void.
“I will give you one last chance. Get in my carriage.”
What is wrong with him all of a sudden? Was losing the jousting match that much of a shock?
“Why should I go with you, Your Grace?”
It’s not like we’re on friendly enough terms to share a carriage and chat. Though, in the original story, we were destined to be fellow passengers in a carriage to the afterlife.
Franz stared at me indifferently and pulled my arm forcefully.
I pushed against his chest with all my might to keep from being dragged away. Without moving a single step, I met his gaze head-on.
“I’ll say it again. Let go.”
Franz’s beautiful face slowly began to contort for the first time.
A blood-red murderous intent flickered in his violet eyes. The sight of his angelic beauty coexisting with a demonic soul gave me a strange sense of dread.
“I don’t like you being around filthy things.”
Franz’s grip on my arm tightened even further, his gaze burning with intensity.
If this had been the Erika from the original novel, she would have naturally obeyed.
But that’s not me.
I wouldn’t hold your hand even if I died.
“As you can see, my shoes are quite filthy. I wouldn’t dare ride with you, Your Grace. I’m worried I might soil your carriage.”
I smiled brightly and held out the sole of my shoe, showing off the mud for all to see.
“Brother, what are you doing with that woman?”
A sharp, high-pitched voice sliced through the air between us.
Eliade, thank you so much for coming right now.
They say an enemy is sometimes your best ally, and she appeared at the perfect moment to resolve this awkward situation.
Eliade approached, huffing with indignation, as if even the fact that Franz was holding my arm was offensive to her. She clung to his arm like a child afraid of losing her brother.
“Did that woman bother you, Brother?”
Her ridiculous assumption made me let out a dry laugh. I didn’t want to spend another second in the same space as these rude siblings.
“Grand Heir. Since it seems your conversation is over, I will be going.”
“Wait, Erika.”
Franz still wouldn’t let go of me.
Please, just stop. Why is he so persistent?
I couldn’t even bother to manage my expression anymore and looked at him with a face full of annoyance.
Franz looked at Eliade with a stern expression for a moment.
“Apologize formally to Lady Diel. For that unpleasant incident at the library.”
“What? Brother, what are you talking about? Why should I apologize to that woman?”
Eliade cried out, looking as startled as if she’d been burned.
Franz didn’t flinch, keeping his cold eyes fixed on her.
“Did you think I wouldn’t know about the incident at the library?”
Eliade’s face turned pale with embarrassment.
“Brother, it’s a misunderstanding. That was just a mistake…”
“I am commanding you as the heir to the House of Schpern. Now!”
Eliade looked as if she were on the verge of bursting into tears from the humiliation. She bit her lower lip resentfully, her hand holding the fan trembling slightly.
I was the one who was flustered and shocked. I never could have imagined this. Franz making his sister apologize? What on earth is happening?
Eliade barely managed to bow her head toward me. It was a greeting so slight it was almost invisible.
“La… Lady Diel. I am truly sorry for that day. I apologize for my mistake.”
I watched her in silence.
I could overlook the rudeness she showed me, but she had yet to apologize for the evil deeds she had committed against other innocent young ladies.
“I accept your apology. I hope you use this incident as a lesson and sincerely repent for the rudeness you’ve shown other ladies as well.”
Eliade’s face went white. She bit her delicate lips so hard they looked crushed.
“I shall keep that advice in mind.”
Eliade lifted her head proudly again. She looked like a queen who had been forced to kneel to an enemy but had not lost her dignity.
Unbelievable. It’s so shameless for the perpetrator to wear such a confident expression.
With a frozen face, Eliade turned around sharply without even looking at Franz.
Franz let out a light sigh as he watched his sister head down first with the servants.
“As a member of the Schpern family, I apologize for my sister’s rash behavior. I will ensure such a thing does not happen again.”
“Um, you really are the Grand Heir, right?”
I was so stunned by the situation that my true thoughts slipped out.
At my absurd question, Franz wore an expression of disbelief.
“What do you mean by that?”
“I just felt that making her apologize for her wrongdoings was quite contrary to your usual self, Your Highness.”
“Your assessment of me is quite negative, I see.”
Franz let out a soft chuckle. Was this really the same person who was radiating murderous intent moments ago?
“Is your wound alright now?”
His gaze lingered on my cheek for a long time. For some reason, it felt itchy, so I quickly covered my cheek with my hand.
“It’s nothing you need to concern yourself with, Your Grace.”
I replied sarcastically, but Franz gave a faint smile and finally let go of my arm.
I pointedly massaged my arm and glared at him with a look full of dissatisfaction.
“Aren’t you going to apologize for rudely grabbing a lady’s arm?”
Franz looked down at his palm, then clenched his empty hand. The corners of his mouth twitched upward with a cold edge.
“I simply caught my prey and then released it for a moment. Is there a hunter who apologizes to his prey?”
Franz’s mocking attitude made my blood boil. I clenched my fists and glared at him.
“From what I’ve heard, those are harsh words. Who exactly is the prey?”
Franz wore a faint, chilling smile. His eyes wavered with a subtle light.
“I hope you enjoy the banquet. Tonight, do not leave the Grand Duke’s side under any circumstances.”
Franz’s voice was cold.
Yet, why did it sound more like a worry than a warning?
As if paralyzed by venom, I couldn’t move until Franz had disappeared.
If he meant the Grand Duke, was he talking about Calix?
Why would he tell me to stay by his side when he hates Calix?
What was his intention? My head felt heavy, as if trapped in a thick fog.
“Erika, what are you doing here?”
Someone took my hand. It was Freesia, approaching with a smiling face. I pretended nothing was wrong and laughed.
“It’s nothing. Freesia, you’re attending the banquet too, right?”
“Oh, I…”
Freesia looked slightly troubled. Just then, her maid hurried over and whispered something to her.
Her face stiffened like a cold wax doll. She quickly returned to her bright self when she noticed my gaze, though.
“I had a wonderful time watching the match with you today, Erika.”
“I had fun too.”
“But what should I do? I have to head back now. My father worries if I return home late. Let’s meet at the library next time, Erika.”
Ah, as expected, Freesia is a kind-hearted, filial daughter. Heading home so early in the evening.
For a few seconds, I reflected on my own life as a disloyal daughter who, after becoming an adult, used excuses like studying at the library or having drinks to stay out past midnight every day.
Freesia gave a graceful farewell and approached the Crown Prince to pay her respects as well.
The two of them standing and talking looked like a prince and princess from a fairy tale, drawing admiration from everyone watching.
“Don’t they look so good together?”
“Seeing such a handsome man and beautiful woman brightens my eyes. As expected of Lady Rubel.”
The nobles praised Freesia’s graceful posture and exquisite beauty. Even the young ladies looked at Freesia’s beauty with eyes of longing and admiration.
A few politically astute nobles were already speculating that Freesia was a candidate for the next Crown Princess and were discussing joining hands with Count Rubel.
It’s a relief that public opinion in social circles is revolving around Freesia. The rumor that Grand Duke Calix dedicated his victory to a royal library librarian probably won’t spread too far.
Eventually, Freesia left in her carriage. I seriously considered heading back to the residence myself.
According to the original story, Calix and Freesia should be recognized as lovers, but somehow I had ended up being pointed out as the Grand Duke’s lady.
I had managed to escape the crisis by vaguely calling myself his “benefactor,” but now that the tension had eased, extreme fatigue washed over me.
All I wanted to do was go back to the residence and roll around on my bed.
Hm. I could just send word to Michael through someone else.
Just as I was about to slip away to see if I could catch a passing carriage, Michael came running up, his blonde hair fluttering.
“Sister, did you wait long?”
“Ah, no. Young Lord.”
“Shall we go to the waiting room where my brother is now? There’s still some time before the banquet.”
Michael pulled my hand with an excited face.
Ugh, I can’t say no when he looks at me with those innocent eyes.
When we went down, the tournament grounds were busy with banquet preparations. Servants were scurrying about everywhere.
Long, large tables that could seat dozens of people were being set up, and large barrels of alcohol were placed on top.
On one side, whole pigs on spits were rotating over bonfires. The savory smell of roasting meat wafted through the air, stimulating my appetite.
The wooden fences that had crossed the center of the arena were smashed with axes and piled in the middle to be used as firewood. Someone threw a spark, and smoke rose from the wood before a massive flame flared up instantly.
“I heard this banquet is being held by His Highness the Crown Prince for the knights.”
“I wonder. Don’t you think His Highness just wants to enjoy himself?”
Michael chuckled as if my words were funny, trying to stifle his laughter.
“Oh, by the way. The Shadow Knights will be attending the banquet too. My brother will be there until the end. You’ll join us too, won’t you? Since you’re the winner’s lady.”
The boy grinned with mischief in his eyes as he said those last words.
I shuddered at Michael’s words.
“Ugh, don’t even mention that ‘lady’ thing. It gives me goosebumps.”
Why did that Grand Duke fellow do something I didn’t ask for and put me in such a spot?
I had a bad feeling that the tag “The Jousting Champion’s Lady” would follow me around for a while.
Even if the social gossip is somewhat buried thanks to Freesia and the Crown Prince, the people around me are the problem.
The Crown Prince will probably tease me whenever he’s bored, and William will surely mention it with a gentle, suggestive smile. It’s obvious Rose will interrogate me until the dust flies about my relationship with Calix.
Ah, my head is already starting to hurt. Should I just take a leave of absence this time?
I looked up at the sky with a heavy heart.
Before I knew it, the sun was setting. Beyond the tournament sky, the sunset was spreading in red streaks.
The spectators were leaving the arena like a receding tide. Some nobles and knights remained, laughing and talking boisterously.
We also made our way to the waiting room. Even as we walked, Michael stole glances at the knights with eyes full of admiration.
“The knights staying together regardless of victory or defeat… it’s wonderful.”
“You will become a brave knight too when you grow up, Lord Michael.”
The Kingdom of Ruberia was founded on the loyalty and devotion of knights. Perhaps that was why many children of the nobility received knighthood upon reaching adulthood.
“Do you think I can do it? My body is weak and I get sick often.”
Michael looked down at his slender wrists, his head drooping.
Seeing him so discouraged made me feel sorry for him, so I gently took his hand.
“I heard that a knight needs a strong and warm heart. You have a heart that is stronger and kinder than anyone else’s, so you will become a brave knight just like the Grand Duke.”
His cheeks, covered in soft peach fuzz, turned a bit rosy, as if he was embarrassed by me holding his hand.
“Sister, that’s my brother’s waiting room over there. Let’s go quickly.”
It’s so obvious that he’s changing the subject. How cute. I smiled as I looked at the back of the boy leading me forward, holding my hand tightly.
It’s a small and weak hand now, but it will be different when it grows large enough to envelop mine. It might become a hand that makes the world a warmer place.
***
On one side of the tournament grounds, about a dozen knight waiting rooms made of tents stood in a row. Knights, having shed their heavy armor, were chatting with lighthearted faces. Some were seen sharpening weapons or tending to their horses.
On the other side, young sons of noble families were gathered, their faces full of competitive spirit, slinging bows and quivers over their shoulders. Seeing the targets set up, it seemed they were in the middle of a light archery match among themselves.
Turning my gaze, I saw a young man with brown curly hair and sharp eyes standing guard in front of the last tent. It was Gilbert of the Shadow Knights. Just as I was about to call out to him in delight, a young noble blocked Michael’s path.
“Hey, Michael. What’s a guy who should be stuck in a greenhouse reading books doing here?”
The noble picking a fight out of nowhere looked three or four years older than Michael. Wearing a velvet hat adorned with peacock feathers, a leather jacket, and riding breeches, he had a haughty air about him. The boy looked Michael up and down with eyes full of jealousy and envy. When Michael didn’t respond, he flared up in annoyance.
“Do you dare not remember me? Lord Zeke of the House of Duke Ared?”
I whispered softly to Michael.
“He doesn’t seem like a friend—is he a rival?”
“No, Sister. He’s just a noble I briefly saw at a tea party held at the royal palace a while ago. Don’t mind him.”
Hmm… I can see right through this without even looking. Michael probably monopolized the attention of the young ladies at the tea party and was praised as a brilliant prodigy. This noble is just picking a fight because he’s green with envy.
I tried to pass by with just a polite nod, but Zeke roughly grabbed Michael’s shoulder.
“Where do you think you’re going!”
“Young Lord Michael!”
The little lord lost his balance, stumbled, and fell. I quickly supported him and helped him up. Zeke pointed his finger and sneered.
“Just a child wrapped in a maid’s skirts.”
Did this arrogant brat just touch my little lord?
Noticing the commotion, Gilbert rushed over in a single bound and put an arm around Michael’s shoulder.
“Young Lord, are you alright?”
Angry that his precious little master had been pushed, Gilbert looked back at Zeke with a hardened expression. At that, the insolent boy barked out in a rage, shouting at the top of his lungs.
“How dare a mere knight glare at me, a nobleman?”
As Zeke caused a scene, the surrounding attention naturally shifted toward us. The knights watched Zeke with displeased expressions, while the other young nobles crossed their arms and watched with curious eyes.
With the crowd gathering, Zeke grew even more emboldened and pointed his finger at Michael. I really wanted to snap that finger of his.
“Michael, a knight of your house has dared to be impolite to me. Since you are his young master, you’ll have to pay in his stead.”
“That makes no sense. Sir Gilbert did nothing wrong.”
Michael protested, but Zeke ignored him and ordered his servant to bring a bow. A moment later, the servant brought a bow and a quiver. Zeke threw them at Michael’s feet.
“Even a greenhouse flower should know the basic virtue of archery. Compete with me.”
This brat, barely out of diapers, insulted my precious Michael, treated me like a mere maid, and even dragged the innocent Gilbert into this. I couldn’t just stand by and watch anymore.
A crooked sprout must be stepped on thoroughly from the start to grow correctly. He needs a “true education.” I picked up the bow and quiver from the ground and glared at Zeke.
“There is no need for Lord Michael to step forward for a match like this. I will compete with you.”
Michael was flustered and tried to stop me.
“No, Sister! I’ll do it!”
Zeke also snorted as if it were absurd.
“Aren’t you a maid? You dare to compete with me?”
“I am Erika Diel, a librarian at the Royal Library. I challenge you to a match for insulting Young Lord Michael, Sir Gilbert, and myself.”
“Ha? You think you’re a match for me?”
The arrogant boy shouted in mockery. He wasn’t even worth an answer, so I notched an arrow. When I drew the string, Zeke flinched and took a step back. I pulled the string taut and gave a thin smile.
“Let’s start the match immediately. I’m a bit impatient.”
“If you’re a librarian, you should stick to books! Why are you interfering in a noble’s match? Know your place!”
He turned red and shouted, though he winced in fear that the arrow might fly. Talkative little shrimp. Maybe I should just “accidentally” fire it. He looks like the type who’d cry for his mother if an arrow so much as grazed his cheek.
“I would have been disappointed if you started such an exciting match without me.”
A familiar voice came from behind. Turning around, I saw the Crown Prince approaching with his personal guards. He gave a low whistle and smiled.
“Librarian Erika. It seems interesting things always happen around you.”
At the sudden appearance of the Crown Prince, Zeke froze stiff and bowed his head so low it nearly touched the ground.
“Your Highness, have you been well?”
Ludwig frowned, searching his memory for a moment, then returned to an indifferent expression.
“I don’t remember who you are, but that’s not important. Hurry up and start the match. I want to see Librarian Erika’s archery skills.”
A quick-witted court aide even brought over a chair. Once the Crown Prince took his seat, other nobles and resting knights naturally flocked to the scene. As the light friendly match grew into a spectacle attended by the Crown Prince, Zeke and the other young nobles looked flustered.
Servants quickly lit torches around the target area.
“Now, begin the match. I shall personally bestow a prize upon the winner.”
Ludwig’s voice was full of majesty, but his expression was like a neighborhood leader engrossed in a fun game. After a moment of panic, Zeke stepped forward with a confident smile, slinging his bow. His servant followed hurriedly, carrying the quiver.
I was about to prepare when Michael and Gilbert, their faces full of worry, tried to dissuade me.
“Sister, you don’t have to push yourself to participate because of me.”
“He is right. Noble children undergo archery training from a young age and possess considerable skill. This will surely be a difficult match.”
Well, I’m actually quite good now. I seem to have a talent for it, and my accuracy is high. Can’t you guys just trust me once?
As I was trying to convince Michael, a low, melodic voice drifted from behind me.
“I, too, wish to see it. Your archery skills, I mean.”
“Brother!” Michael cried out happily.
Calix, dressed in casual attire, was looking down at me with a soft smile on his lips. Usually seen in stiff uniforms, seeing him in a comfortable white tunic shirt made his impression seem much softer.
Calix leaned his face close to mine.
“Since that man has defiled my brother’s honor, I ask that the Lady restore it.”
He whispered politely in my ear with an incredibly alluring tone. It was as if an enchanting lover were tempting a knight to bring back victory. Unconsciously, my grip on the bow tightened and my pulse quickened.
“Th-thank you for believing in me, Great Duke.”
I stepped aside to put as much distance between myself and Calix as possible. Being near that male lead is not good for my heart.
Regulating my breathing, I looked ahead. The distance to the target was roughly 80 meters. It was dark, but thanks to the torches scattered around the grounds and the bonfire in the center, it wasn’t a problem.
the court aide stepped forward and began explaining the rules.
“You shall take turns firing. You will fire a total of three arrows, and the closer to the center, the higher the score.”
“I’ll go first.”
Zeke stepped forward first and pulled his bow with confidence. The arrow flew instantly and pierced the center of the target. The watching nobles applauded.
“Zeke, as expected of a sharpshooter. Well done!”
Zeke waved his hand boastfully to the crowd, then glared at Michael and me with a sneer. As if to say we were no match for him. Michael’s expression darkened rapidly.
“Zeke is famous for his archery. I’d rather shoot the bow myself than have you be humiliated, Sister.”
While Michael spoke solemnly, I tied my long, bothersome hair back and rolled up my sleeves. I picked up the empty bow and snapped the string a few times. It wasn’t familiar, but it was a usable bow.
“Just trust me once. Erika, the benefactor of the Ducal House, will bring you victory.”
I gave Michael a wink and stepped forward boldly. The nobles and knights gathered around the field buzzed. A noble lady entering an archery match was an unprecedented event, and everyone looked as if they had discovered a new source of entertainment. Noblewomen whispered in surprise. Some young nobles glanced at me with disdainful expressions.
Leaving the minor noise behind, I took a deep breath. The dot on the distant target appeared clearly. I pulled the bowstring taut and released it. The movement flowed naturally. The arrow flew like a beam of light and hit the very center of the target.
“A bullseye! Incredible!”
“Did she receive separate training? Such archery skills are astounding!”
Exclamations erupted from the spectators. By defying the expectation of failure, the looks directed at me changed instantly. Michael let out a sigh of relief and rejoiced, while Ludwig shouted excitedly, “I knew it! I believed in you!”
Calix merely watched me intently with a satisfied smile. Zeke, standing beside me, looked at me with an expression of disbelief.
“This makes no sense. How could you have such skill…?”
“Shall we say it’s the result of steady practice?”
I gave him a bright smile and gestured for his next turn. He bit his lip hard in frustration and hastily notched an arrow. Zeke’s arrow landed about a finger’s width away from the center.
“Ah, what a shame.”
Disappointed groans were heard here and there. Having failed to hit the center, Zeke snapped his arrow in a fit of rage.
Then, it was my turn. I had hit the first one by luck, but as I prepared to fire the second, the pressure weighed heavy on my shoulders.
‘Haa, I can’t fail. Can I do this?’
I tried to calm my mind and drew the string.
Pak!
I focused and fired, but unfortunately, the arrow veered away from the center.
“Hmph! The first shot was just luck.”
Zeke sneered and stepped forward.
“Watch closely, because I’m going to win.”
He boasted, but his shoulders were stiff with tension. As Zeke raised his bow, everyone held their breath. The boy focused on the target with the string drawn. Perhaps due to the pressure of it being the final shot, his breathing became ragged and the arrowhead trembled minutely. His last arrow landed precariously beside the bullseye.
“Ah! So close!”
“It’s not a bullseye.”
People clicked their tongues in disappointment, and the young nobles snorted. The cold reaction suggested he couldn’t even manage that much. Zeke seemed greatly shocked and threw his bow down in a fit of temper.
Now it was my turn. I notched the arrow. This was the last chance. I focused all my mind and heart on the dot of the target. Strangely, my heavy and tingling arm felt light, and my mind became clear. The moment the sharp arrowhead sparkled like a star, I released the string.
Swish!
With the sound of tearing through the air, the arrow pierced the very center of the target with precision. For a moment, a heavy silence fell.
“Waaaaa!”
Admiration and cheers erupted all at once like fireworks. Even the fluttering flags seemed to shake from the roar.
“It’s a bullseye!”
“Lady Diel! Magnificent skill!”
The knights cheered, the surprised nobles clapped, and the young ladies held hands in delight. The enthusiastic response, which I hadn’t expected, was almost overwhelming.
“Th-the winner is Lady Erika Diel!” the court aide belatedly announced.
Amidst the boisterous response, I looked around. Zeke had disappeared somewhere. He probably went home because he was bitter about losing. He must have learned a firm lesson this time—that you shouldn’t treat people poorly based solely on status.
“Sister, you’re the best!”
Michael ran over and jumped into my arms. I whispered to my radiant little lord.
“Didn’t I tell you? I said I would give you the victory.”
“You gave more than that.”
Looking up, Calix was standing before me.
“A wonderful match. I enjoyed it, my knight.”
The blue eyes looking down at me were so enchanting that I met them as if possessed. Before I could move away, he kissed the back of my hand.
“Great Duke…!”
I quickly pulled my hand away. He gazed down at me steadily. Looking into his eyes, I felt a desire I could never suppress stir within me. I wanted to grab that strong yet noble neck and feast upon those pure lips. Perhaps it was the adrenaline of victory, but my heart was thumping and my forehead felt hot.
I hid the hand he had held behind my back. Why does this man keep testing the limits of my patience?
Just then, Ludwig approached with a jovial laugh on his face.
“As expected, my librarian handles a bow as well as she does books. It was a splendid match.”
“You flatter me, Your Highness.”
I bowed my head humbly in response. The Crown Prince naturally put an arm around Calix’s shoulder and laughed playfully.
“It seems the Great Duke of Reinhardt’s efforts were for naught. Lady Diel is a knight who knows how to defend her own honor.”
Calix smiled quietly. The pride he felt for me was so clearly visible on his face that it was almost embarrassing. The palace aide arrived carrying the winner’s prize on a silver tray. It was a magnificent jewelry box studded with red gems, about the size of a baby’s palm.
Crown Prince Ludwig shouted loudly to the crowd.
“The winner of today’s archery match is Lady Erika Diel. In honor of the noble match she showed with her excellent marksmanship, I bestow upon her an artifact of the Royal Palace!”
A round of applause poured out. I politely accepted the small jewelry box the Crown Prince presented. While I wore a joyful smile on the outside, on the inside, complaints were nearly bubbling up my throat.
‘What am I supposed to do with a jewelry box? I don’t even have a single gold ring to put in it. Just give me gold coins instead. A librarian’s salary is peanuts!’
Michael rejoiced as if it were his own achievement.
“To receive a royal jewelry box… Congratulations, Sister.”
“Is this a good thing?” I asked secretly, checking my surroundings.
Michael blinked in surprise and asked back, “You didn’t know? That box is an artifact that creates a protective shield. With that, you could buy a small castle. It’s a very precious treasure.”
‘Gasp! What did you say? Did I just win the lottery?’
I had to force down my cheekbones which were trying to ascend into the sky from sheer joy. Does this mean I can now enjoy an elegant noble life in a picture-perfect castle? I need to think about who to sell this to right away. Should I secretly approach a wealthy merchant or noble? Since it’s a royal treasure, they’ll pay even more, right? Hehehe.
While I was lost in a daydream of overnight riches, a small, soft hand pulled at me.
“Sister, hurry. They say the banquet is starting now. Let’s go.”
In front of me, Michael was laughing with a face as bright as an angel’s. Beside me, Calix was walking as if escorting me with a tender gaze. Behind us, the Shadow Knights followed. When I made eye contact with Commander Liam, Lloyd, and Gilbert, they gave me thumbs-ups and laughed jovially.
When I first possessed this body, I was alone. When did I come to have so many people by my side?
Seeing their warm smiles reflected in the light of the bonfires illuminating the banquet hall—surrounded by those who were like a sturdy fence around me—I couldn’t help but smile brightly in return.
***
Dozens of nobles and knights, regardless of status, sat freely at a long table that stretched across the center of the stadium.
The noble ladies and young misses had already returned home by carriage. This was because a knights’ banquet was the type of affair where they ate and drank outdoors until dawn to celebrate their victory.
Meat and liquor were piled high on the long table, and musicians played the lute, trumpet, and horn to heighten the festive mood.
Having cast off their heavy armor, the knights enjoyed the banquet with lighthearted expressions. They soothed their bodies and minds, weary from the competition, with alcohol, meat, and boisterous laughter.
Lloyd looked around and spoke in a satisfied voice.
“It’s been a while since I’ve seen a traditional knight-style banquet.”
“Agreed. Looks like we’ll be eating and drinking happily until dawn.”
Gilbert chimed in with an excited face. Michael, who was listening nearby, asked curiously.
“Did you often hold banquets like this too, Brother?”
Lloyd stepped in to tell an old anecdote.
“It was truly rare. The Grand Duke always said we shouldn’t let our guard down even after a battle. Once, he finally held a banquet for us after a long time, but unfortunately, monsters attacked right then…”
“So, what happened?”
“The Grand Duke fought back by throwing entire kegs of beer. Thanks to that, the precious alcohol we’d barely managed to obtain was completely smashed.”
Lloyd glanced resentfully at the culprit of the incident, as if he still regretted the wasted alcohol. Noticing this, a benevolent smile touched the corners of Calix’s mouth.
“Lloyd, I’ll allow you to drink as much as you want today. However, you must not get drunk. If you do, I’ll put you inside a beer barrel instead of the ale.”
“How can you tell me to drink but not get drunk? You’re too cruel!”
Lloyd wailed, looking unfairly treated, which made the surrounding people burst into laughter.
As I laughed along, a steady, large hand appeared before my eyes.
“My knight.”
Calix called me elegantly, showing due courtesy.
“Could you do something about that title ‘Knight’? It’s a bit burdensome to hear.”
Curious gazes from the surroundings swarmed toward us.
‘Stop staring. Is there a show going on or something?’
I only lightly rested the tips of my fingers on Calix’s hand. His large hand wrapped around my fingertips. It was warm, yet it tickled. It was flustering how my heart fluttered at such a casual touch of skin.
“Is that so? I enjoy having more titles to call you by.”
He laughed out loud, sounding sincere. At the sound of Calix’s rare laughter, Michael and the Shadow Knights were startled as if they had seen a ghost.
Calix took my hand and headed toward Crown Prince Ludwig. It was custom for the winner of the joust to sit next to the royalty hosting the event.
Ludwig welcomed us with open arms and cried out melodically.
“My loyal knights have returned to me bearing victory!”
‘Hmm, His Highness the Crown Prince is tone-deaf. Better leave the singing to the bards.’
Ludwig motioned for me to come to his left.
“Erika, my librarian and brave knight. Come here quickly.”
The Crown Prince glanced at Calix standing beside me and gave a sly smirk.
“Grand Duke Reinhardt, don’t glare at me like you’re going to kill me.”
‘This feels like being forced to sit next to the CEO at a company dinner.’
But I judged that sitting next to the Crown Prince was a hundred times better than sitting next to Calix and causing unnecessary misunderstandings.
“It is the Crown Prince’s command, so I must follow.”
I quickly sat to Ludwig’s left. Ignoring Calix’s stinging gaze, I gave a bright smile to Michael, who sat across from me.
Once all the attending knights were seated, everyone’s glasses were filled with beer or wine. Fruit liquor was prepared for the younger sons of noble families.
When Ludwig stood up and raised his glass high, everyone followed suit. I also lifted a pewter cup full of wine.
“To my knights!”
Ludwig’s clear, powerful voice echoed far and wide.
His red hair, illuminated by the torches, was as vivid as a flame. It was as if his mere presence proved him to be the heir to the kingdom.
The noisy table fell silent, and everyone looked at the Crown Prince at once.
“Today, in the joust, many knights became winners or losers. Every one of them was brave and honorable. In honor of your loyalty and chivalry, I hope you eat, drink, and enjoy yourselves to your heart’s content today! Long live the great Ruberia!”
“Long live the great Ruberia!”
The knights cheered passionately, shouting their loyalty to Ruberia and Ludwig. One could feel their solemn determination to give their lives at any time if the Crown Prince commanded it. Ludwig’s speech held that much power. I realized once again the weight of the position he occupied.
‘Usually, he’s just a playboy prince who loves to have fun, but sometimes he shows the charisma of a surprisingly capable monarch. It’s hard to believe he was a villain blinded by jealousy in the original story.’
I looked at Ludwig with eyes full of respect. Making eye contact with me, he mimed a toast and winked.
‘Of course. I take back the ‘cool’ part; he’s back to being the original flirtatious Crown Prince.’
“Seeing today’s match makes me want you even more. A librarian who’s even good at archery. You could protect me from enemies in an emergency.”
“I can also throw books in an emergency. Though I might accidentally hit the back of Your Highness’s head.”
When I replied tartly, Ludwig burst into laughter, seemingly amused.
“Haha, you don’t have to worry about that. My knight will block it for me. Isn’t that right?”
Calix, who had been drinking with an expressionless face, let his gaze linger on me for a moment.
I’d felt it for a while, but his eyes looked deeply displeased, as if something was seriously bothering him. Especially the way his gaze kept wandering toward my chair…
Wait.
‘No way, Calix, are you sulking? The Grand Duke is sulking? That high and mighty Duke, just because I sat next to the Crown Prince? Surely, that’s impossible.’
Disbelieving, I narrowed my eyes to observe Calix. But as expected, it must have been my imagination; he looked at the Crown Prince with his usual indifferent and cold expression.
“Dodge the books yourself. I do not step in to protect you unless your life is in danger.”
“Haah, you’re too cold-hearted. My loyal knight~”
Ludwig wailed and clung to Calix’s shoulder.
‘Here we go again. Is he a child or an adult?’
As I shook my head, I made eye contact with Michael. The boy’s emerald eyes sparkled as he smiled brightly at me.
‘Ah, so dazzling. I can’t look at him directly.’
“Sister, you were truly amazing. How do you shoot an arrow so well?”
“Thank you, Young Lord.”
Just seeing Michael’s cute, lovely, twinkling smile made me feel like I was being rewarded for everything.
‘Don’t worry, little one. This big sister will protect you forever.’
Concealing my heartwarming—yet slightly obsessed—smile behind my glass, I took a drink and happened to look across the table.
“Oh.”
It was a familiar, arrogant face: Zeke.
I thought he had stomped off after losing. It was unexpected to see him stay for the banquet.
That’s good. Actually, it weighed on my mind that I had won against a minor. As the elder, it’s only right that I offer an olive branch first.
“Young Lord Zeke, it was a good match.”
When I raised my glass to propose a toast, Zeke turned his head away sharply, looking disgruntled.
“Hmph! Don’t get all cocky just because you won.”
‘This brat really has a talent for getting on people’s nerves until the very end.’
I approached him with a forced smile barely hanging on my lips. Zeke flinched as if I were a ghost.
“Wh-what?”
“From what I hear, your speech is quite short. Since I’m your elder and a noble lady, shouldn’t you show some etiquette?”
“…”
Zeke pouted with a face full of dissatisfaction.
As I suppressed the urge to smack him on the head, Michael stepped in with a stern look.
“Stop it. This person is a benefactor of the Reinhardt family. Insulting Lady Diel is the same as insulting our family. If you show any more rudeness, I will not tolerate it further.”
Michael, who usually looked like a lovely baby rabbit, glared at Zeke with serious eyes. In moments like this, he truly looked like Calix’s brother.
The strong power and integrity dwelling in his emerald eyes carried a strange pressure.
Zeke seemed overwhelmed by Michael’s sudden transformation and lost his words. Following that, he lowered his head and apologized to me in a crawling voice.
“…I a-apologize for insulting the Lady. Lady Diel.”
“I hope the Young Lord learned many lessons from this incident as well. Let’s have a better match next time.”
As a gesture of reconciliation, I was the first to offer a handshake. Zeke stared blankly at my hand for a moment without saying a word.
‘What’s up with him? Why is his face turning red? Where did his bold energy go? Is he suddenly acting shy? He can’t even meet my eyes. Did he eat something wrong?’
Just as Zeke was about to accept the handshake with a slight tremble, three hands shot out like lightning to block him.
Calix, Michael, and Ludwig had reached out their hands as if they had made a pact.
“What is everyone doing right now?”
Dumbfounded, I looked around at the three of them. Michael replied with a serious face.
“I can’t let him just hold my sister’s hand.”
Ludwig chimed in with a grin.
“I totally agree with Michael’s opinion.”
Finally, a short word from Calix.
“She is mine, so no.”
A bombshell statement suddenly dropped, echoing heavily. A heavy silence descended over the boisterous banquet hall.
A startled Michael widened his eyes, and Ludwig gave a meaningful smile, letting out a frivolous whistle. Even the knights, who had been eating and drinking merrily, froze like stone statues and looked at me and Calix.
Lloyd, who had been happily tearing into meat, sat with his mouth agape, and Gilbert, who had been drinking, coughed as if something had gone down the wrong pipe. Commander Liam gave a bitter smile and shook his head.
I clenched my fists with all my might. I could feel my face burning up. I was embarrassed and ashamed, but at the same time, anger flared up. At this self-centered male lead!
I glared at Calix, gritting my teeth.
“The Grand Duke is making a huge misunderstanding. I do not belong to anyone.”
Calix looked at me—trying my best to hold back my anger—and smiled nonchalantly. It made me even more furious!
“Oh dear, I must have made a slip of the tongue because I’m drunk. My apologies, friend.”
He didn’t look sorry at all. And that man only brings up ‘friendship’ when it suits him!
Michael smiled and comforted me, looking like he felt sorry for my fuming state.
“I guess Brother is very drunk, Sister. Please calm down.”
Ludwig patted my shoulder, pretending to be deeply regretful.
“Please understand my knight’s slip of the tongue. That fellow only knows how to swing a sword and doesn’t understand a lady’s delicate heart. As his liege, I feel a deep sense of responsibility. I shall personally provide intensive education to him regarding a lady’s psychology.”
I let out a sigh inwardly and downed my glass in one go. The deep, bitter wine wetted my burning throat. As the alcohol spread to my head, my anger subsided a little.
‘There’s no way that male lead knows my situation. How hard I’m struggling to survive as ‘Erika’ in this world. And how much I’m trying to avoid getting lost in a love that doesn’t belong to me. My situation is different from yours. The male lead and female lead only need to fall in rosy love, so they probably have nothing to worry about. The whole world cheers for their love, and crises or hardships are just seasoning for the process toward a ‘happily ever after’ ending. But I’m a supporting character. One who is destined to be betrayed by love and beheaded. In Erika’s life, love was ruin and pain. It’s predestined that way. If I slip even a little, I don’t know when I’ll fall into that preordained abyss. So, I won’t choose any kind of love.’
“Brave knights, raise your glasses again! Today, let us fight with alcohol instead of swords all night long!”
Above the deathly quiet table, the Crown Prince gallantly raised his glass. At his energetic toast, the atmosphere turned boisterous and lively again as if nothing had happened.
“To the heroes of Ruberia!”
“Toast to His Highness Crown Prince Ludwig!”
Ludwig turned his gaze toward me and smiled softly. He personally poured wine into my glass.
“Librarian Erika, will you remember that today is a banquet for the winner? Grand Duke Reinhardt fought bravely for your honor.”
“I am well aware, Your Highness.”
I replied while avoiding Calix’s gaze, which had been fixed on me intensely for a while.
Ludwig continued the conversation with me after offering words of encouragement to the knight sitting in front of him.
“Thanks to Grand Duke Reinhardt fighting the Schpern family, we also gained the achievement of grasping the power of their knighthood.”
Ludwig laughed refreshingly and patted Calix on the shoulder. It was a playful action, but deep trust could be felt there too.
“Grand Duke Reinhardt, congratulations on your victory.”
Young nobles came with their glasses, vying to offer their congratulations.
“I heard about your dazzling performance during the last monster subjugation expedition. You are amazing.”
“If it weren’t for the Grand Duke, the damage to the people from monsters would have been great.”
“That’s right. Thanks to you wiping out the monsters that appeared in the Northern Mountains, didn’t the surrounding countries ask our Ruberia for peace first?”
Perhaps because they were young, hot-blooded nobles who hadn’t yet been embroiled in political battles, they looked at Calix with eyes of pure awe and admiration.
“I only followed the King’s command.”
When Calix replied bluntly, the Crown Prince quirked up a corner of his mouth and draped an arm over his shoulder.
“My knight is far too humble. Today is for you, so please enjoy yourself more.”
The Crown Prince turned his gaze to the young nobles as well and showed a smile full of inclusivity.
“I was deeply impressed by your knights’ match. I shall remember it.”
At the Crown Prince’s praise, the young nobles bowed their waists deeply with moved faces.
‘Quite the princely political maneuver. It’s like watching the standard of desirable employee management from a CEO.’
Calix was surrounded by young noble followers. They looked delighted, asking various questions as if they were moved just to meet their revered hero in person.
The Crown Prince was watching that scene with satisfaction.
In the original story, Ludwig and Calix were originally in a master-servant relationship of mutual trust. It was said that they spent the most time together except for family because they received knight training together since childhood.
That relationship broke when the Crown Prince fell in love with Freesia. After learning that she was Calix’s lover, the Crown Prince began to hate his old friend.
Is the reason this relationship is still maintained because Calix hasn’t fallen in love with Freesia yet?
“I can see why Your Highness favors the Grand Duke.”
Ludwig’s eyes narrowed as he gave a seductive eye-smile.
“Are you jealous, Erika?”
I gave a beaming smile.
‘You have to listen to the end of what people say.’
“Having the Grand Duke of the Reinhardt family, who has been devoted to the Kingdom of Ruberia for generations, as your direct knight alone will solidify Your Highness’s position. You can also keep other hostile noble families in check.”
The suave mask shattered in an instant. The Crown Prince’s cold gaze swept down over me.
“Your judgment is surprising for a mere librarian. However, it is a rash and unpleasant remark. Are you saying I am using Grand Duke Reinhardt as a shield?”
There was even a hint of anger in his tone. Seeing him truly angry, I realized how much he cherished Calix. The Crown Prince didn’t keep Calix close because of the throne.
I hurried to fix the situation.
“I sincerely apologize if I offended you. That’s not what I meant.”
“Then what do you mean?”
“It’s just… I feel sorry for the Grand Duke, who has to devote his whole life as the Sword of Ruberia. I wondered if there is no life for the Grand Duke himself.”
‘A sort of camaraderie between workers, I suppose? I work to make a living, but Calix devotes his whole life to the kingdom and his family. Even in a class-based society, isn’t it too unreasonable?’
Ludwig’s cold eyes regained warmth as they were reflected in the torchlight. The Crown Prince leaned his body close toward me. No one noticed that we were close.
Calix was surrounded by nobles. The knights were laughing and chatting cheerfully, and Michael was already talking unreservedly with Zeke.
Ludwig’s breath was close enough to touch my ear. He whispered in a secretive tone, as if revealing the oldest secret in the world.
“A life for oneself… I’ve never heard such a thing before.”
“Why is that?”
The Crown Prince’s blue-gold eyes slowly burned like a flame. That light looked beautiful enough to enchant people and, at the same time, sad enough to ache the heart.
“Because there are duties and fates passed down like a curse for hundreds of years. A king becomes a king, a noble becomes a noble, and a commoner becomes a commoner. And each survives, fights, and dies until they fulfill their responsibilities. There is no life of my own to begin with.”
Looking at the Crown Prince’s blue-gold eyes, I suddenly thought of a legend. The legend that the eyes of the Ruberia royal family possess a mysterious power to pierce through a person’s soul.
“It’s strange. Sometimes you don’t seem like a person of this world. You have ideas that someone born and raised here could never think of.”
‘Don’t tell me he noticed I’ve been possessed?’
A chill flowing from my heart spread throughout my body.
‘There’s no way. He definitely won’t know.’
Clenching my trembling hands, I met his gaze and said calmly.
“Your Highness knows too. The cruel weight of duty and responsibility. That’s why you cherish the Grand Duke even more. Because he is a comrade-in-arms who shares that fate.”
A deep shadow cast over the Crown Prince’s face. A long-hidden guilt surfaced in his eyes.
He emptied his glass alone and swallowed a bitter smile.
“A comrade… that’s an overrated evaluation. I must spend the rest of my life paying back my debt to him.”
“What on earth is that debt, Your Highness?”
Did the question I threw out heedlessly become an arrow that gouged Ludwig’s wound? A trace of deep scarring appeared in his expression.
“The tragedy of seven years ago that everyone knows but no one speaks of. Calix lost his father that day. Someone must take responsibility for failing to prevent the tragedy.”
Ludwig’s voice was heavy and weary. Like a stone sinking deep into a well.
“It wasn’t Your Highness’s fault. You weren’t there at that time.”
‘Is he feeling guilty because of the monster appearance incident at the royal palace seven years ago? It wasn’t something he could have stopped from the beginning.’
“Erika, didn’t I tell you? It is a royal duty and responsibility.”
Ludwig tossed back his drink with a bitter smile.
I was about to drink as well, but was stopped by a large hand that suddenly popped out.
“Excessive drinking is not good, Erika.”
Looking back, Calix was standing there with the light behind him.
“I’m curious what kind of intimate conversation you two were having.”
“Ah, we were listening to the Grand Duke’s heroic tales. His Highness was praising you a lot.”
I laughed awkwardly and told a series of lies. On the other hand, the Crown Prince agreed with my words with a nonchalant attitude.
“The librarian is right. I was just praising how pure and blameless the Grand Duke is in his relationships with women. Isn’t it a rare virtue in this era?”
Calix’s elegant lips drew an arc.
‘Based on my experience, that’s a dangerous signal…’
“That is incorrect, Your Highness. I am not pure in my relationship with Lady Diel.”
Ludwig arched an eyebrow as if surprised and looked at me with an intrigued gaze.
‘As expected, bad premonitions are never wrong.’
Before Calix could open his mouth again, I gripped my glass and jumped up from my seat. Sometimes in life, you just have to run away without thinking, and I felt like right now was that time.
“Erika, where are you going now?”
Calix frowned and tried to catch me, and…
“I’m very curious about the ‘impure relationship’ between you two?”
Ludwig flashed a sly smile, his eyes gleaming as if he would never let this go. But I was already far away from them.
“It’s a story that has nothing to do with me. Then, you two have a pleasant chat.”
I shouted from a distance and quickly bolted. I heard their voices calling me, but I cleanly ignored them.
Looking around, I saw a spot to sit in front of a distant tent. Crouching there, I sipped the rest of my wine and watched the banquet scene.
The stars in the firmament sparkled, and bonfires burning throughout the banquet hall shone here and there. People were laughing and chatting happily, and the band continued to play with an exciting rhythm.
It was peaceful and warm. I wish it could just stay like this.
‘Calix and Freesia falling smoothly in love, Franz not starting a rebellion… And me enjoying small happiness as a library librarian… and a happy ending of going back home.’
Two knights came out in front of a giant bonfire and started dancing. Other knights also flocked out and swayed their bodies, caught up in the excitement. They clapped or linked arms and spun around and around.
It was fun to see these large, muscular men playing like children, so I clapped and watched too.
Before I knew it, the Crown Prince also threw away his dignity and jumped in to dance. The Shadow Knights also put their arms around each other’s shoulders and danced in step before pulling Michael’s hand.
The boy, who was pulled out and was awkwardly following others, discovered me in the distance. He beckoned for me to come, but I was terrified and shook my head.
‘I used to play at modern dance clubs back in the day, but now my back hurts. Even though I’m possessed, I don’t want to lose my mind and dance. I’m a Viscount’s daughter, after all.’
Just then, a shadow cast over my head. Surprised by the unfamiliar presence, I looked back to see Lloyd and Gilbert grabbing my arms from both sides.
“Lady, let’s go. We will escort you.”
“This is just dragging me by force.”
“On a day like this, everyone should dance and enjoy together. Besides, isn’t the Lady the Goddess of Victory?”
“What? Go-goddess? What did you say?”
In the end, I was dragged by them and stood before Michael. Michael smiled brightly and pulled my hand.
“Sister, let’s dance together.”
The music flowed faster and more excitedly. Michael was shy, but soon he expertly hopped with his feet crossing back and forth.
‘Sigh. It can’t be helped.’
Smiling broadly, I linked arms with Michael. After spinning around and passing through the Shadow Knights, I returned Michael to his original spot.
The boy’s cheeks were flushed red, and he looked happy.
A bonfire instead of a fancy chandelier, a dirt floor instead of a luxury carpet. Instead of a great orchestra, the loud songs and clapping of knights were everything, but it was more enjoyable and free than any other banquet.
I threw away stiff rules and archaic etiquette; it didn’t matter if my feet were stepped on or mud splashed on my clothes. Because everyone was dancing happily like children.
“Ack!”
While dancing with people, I lost my footing and almost fell. Fortunately, someone behind me caught me and helped me regain my balance.
“Th-thank… ah.”
When I turned around to say thank you, it was Calix.
His large hands gently wrapped around my shoulders. He leaned down and whispered in my ear in a voice full of unceasing admiration.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve seen Michael and my knights so happy.”
“Is… is that so.”
‘Can’t we talk while maintaining a social distance, Grand Duke? Why do you have to whisper in my ear? It tickles.’
“During all this time, I couldn’t let my guard down for a single moment. If I was careless, I lost my life. In a world where only fear and hatred were everything, I survived like that for seven years.”
His quietly burning cobalt-blue eyes were reflecting my face. I stared at them blankly. Looking into those eyes makes me feel like I’m being trapped in his world.
“But you always show me a new world.”
At his whisper, my head felt dizzy as if a whirlwind were blowing through it.
Calix suddenly grabbed my right hand and examined the palm closely. Then, he furrowed his brow and pulled me strongly toward somewhere.
His expression was so serious that I couldn’t even bring myself to ask where we were going.
The banquet hall was so excited with music and dancing that no one noticed us leaving our seats.
