- Get Your Life Together, Obsessive Male Lead
- Chapter 3 - The Star of the Founding Festival
“Ian, those clothes really suit you!”
“……”
“Young Lady, they suit you well too. There probably isn’t another couple in this empire that matches as well as you two!”
Finally, the day of the Founding Festival dance party that I’d been waiting for. Ian and I, because we’re supposedly a married couple, wore matching outfits. Clothes with purple as the accent color, the same as Ian’s eyes. Apparently purple is the color that symbolizes the Bellocchio Duchy or something. That’s why they say a child who will continue the family line must also have purple eyes.
‘But really, it suits us well…’
I looked at myself in the mirror. A white dress with purple ribbons as accents. It was a style that went well with my silver hair too
The pleasant admiring lasted only briefly.
“Let’s go quickly.”
Ian urged me, tapping my arm with his index finger.
“Okay, let’s go.”
The prospective children’s best couple for the dance party is departing.
As we stepped outside with very confident strides, the coachman greeted us politely and opened the carriage door. With the coachman’s help, I climbed into the carriage quite lightly. Somehow I had a good feeling.
Duke Bellocchio seemed not to want to be with us, so he traveled in a different carriage. So in the carriage, it was just Ian and me alone.
“Ian.”
“What.”
I called to Ian, who had his gaze fixed out the window, tapping him with my foot. Then he turned his head to look at me.
“I have a good feeling about today.”
“What kind of feeling?”
“Somehow I feel like we could become the best couple.”
I spoke confidently, but all that came back was Ian’s scoffing sound.
“Really! We’ve practiced dancing really hard all this time!”
“Other people probably practiced hard too.”
“Anyway! Let’s think positively. We really could win.”
“On what grounds?”
‘Grounds…’
After a brief contemplation, I spoke up vigorously again.
“We practiced dancing every day to become the best couple. There probably aren’t any kids who practiced as much as us, right? So unless one of us gets hurt, we should be able to dance decently like everyone else.”
“Decently like everyone else…”
“And if we show a friendly appearance the whole time, the judges will look favorably on us too.”
“We’re acting, but others might be genuinely friendly.”
‘This kid, really.’
I clenched my fist briefly, then let out a small sigh and relaxed my hand. I’ll be patient. The one who needs something is me. I need to look good to Ian to clear the quest and see the happy ending.
Thinking I should change the subject, I forced my lips into a smile and opened my mouth. Because this was something I really wanted to ask.
“How do I look?”
I straightened my shoulders and waist as I asked. Because it was absurd. This guy who now even takes proper etiquette lessons didn’t say a single word like “it suits you” to me when I’d dressed up so much.
‘This is why I should have raised his Temperament first…’
Raising Temperament wasn’t easy. As evidence, after clearing the quest related to the etiquette teacher incident, his Temperament still remained at 13. After staring at me for a while, Ian finally opened his mouth.
“You’re sitting with good posture.”
Maybe I expected too much. Isn’t the etiquette teacher weird too? He still has no basic manners. How is he supposed to win the female lead’s heart with this mindset? My heart suddenly felt stuffy.
“What do you want to hear?”
“When someone dresses up deliberately like I am now, you should say they’re pretty or that it suits them.”
“Why should I?”
“…You’re not properly attending etiquette lessons, are you? Right?”
I’d tried to only say nice things in front of Ian, but my true feelings slipped out without my realizing.
“Then what do you mean by ‘dressed up deliberately’?”
“Me right now! I dressed up much more than when you see me at the ducal residence.”
“I don’t really know about that stuff.”
“You also dressed up deliberately for today’s dance party. That’s why I complimented you saying you look good.”
“So you want to hear a cookie-cutter compliment that it suits you?”
“No, forget it.”
Wow, what about the female lead? He seems even more hopeless than in the original work. Ian still seems far from becoming a decent child. Will I be able to see a happy ending like this? I was worried.
After the silence continued, we finally arrived at the imperial palace.
***
“Ah, the House of Marquis Leglorie.”
Is this what noble society is like? At the palace, they enter in order from the lowest-ranking nobles. The doorkeeper was announcing each family as they entered, one by one, in a loud voice without his throat even hurting. When I checked with an attendant, he said that the Evra family, Elicia’s family, had entered first among the marquis families participating here.
Before long, all the marquis families had entered. Now it was about time for the Bellocchio Duchy to enter too. So to look close, I linked arms with Ian. At that moment, “Let go.”
Ian asked with a stiff expression, avoiding my arm.
“I’m saying this in case you forgot, but we’re married.”
“Even so, this kind of unnecessary physical contact is a bit difficult.”
“What do you mean unnecessary? We’re married, so we should enter looking close.”
“…Fine. It’s just for a moment.”
Ian, who let out a deep sigh, extended his arm again, and I quickly linked arms, afraid he might change his mind. And shortly after, “The House of Duke Bellocchio!”
At the doorkeeper’s cry, the large doors opened revealing the splendid interior of the hall. A huge chandelier positioned in the center of the arched ceiling sparkled, flaunting its presence. I was briefly mesmerized by its splendor, then came to my senses and moved inside with Duke Bellocchio and Ian.
Am I being self-conscious? It seemed like all eyes were on us.
“Is this why you linked arms?”
“Sorry. I’m nervous.”
The concentrated attention felt burdensome. As I tried not to care, I unconsciously tensed my hands, which resulted in me pinching Ian’s arm. Still, perhaps wanting to grant my request to look close, he asked in a whisper that others couldn’t hear. Should I be grateful?
Thanks to that, perhaps.
“Oh my, I was worried since they married at such a young age, but fortunately they seem to get along well.”
“I wish our kids would get along like that…”
Fortunately, the reaction wasn’t bad. Having succeeded smoothly up to the entrance, I let out a sigh of relief.
I slowly turned my head to look around. Various luxury items like sculptures and paintings were flaunting their presence. On a long table positioned in the corner, various refreshments and fruits were set up. You could tell they put tremendous effort into today.
But what stood out most was something else.
‘Is that real?’
The gold-leafed moldings and columns sparkled as they reflected light, constantly catching my eye. While my attention was briefly stolen by the palace’s splendor, I felt something trying to escape from my left hand.
‘What?’
Only after lowering my gaze could I see that the culprit was Ian. He was quietly pulling his arm out, as if he no longer wanted to link arms with me.
“Don’t forget. People are watching.”
I whispered to Ian and grabbed his arm, not his sleeve. So he couldn’t escape from me anymore. At this, Ian pressed his lips into a straight line as if very displeased, but didn’t particularly try to remove my hand.
As I thought, the feeling is good. I feel like we’re going to become the children’s best couple.
***
“Her Imperial Highness the Princess is entering.”
At the doorkeeper’s cry, all noise in the hall disappeared, and the nobles’ gazes turned toward the entrance. The door opened, revealing a woman with pale blonde hair and a man with brown hair.
‘Is that man her fiancé?’
Anyone in this empire would know that the Princess and a marquis’s son were about to be married. Additionally, there was a rumor that the Princess had chosen him based on height and looks among men her age. As if the rumor were true, the man’s appearance was beautiful, as if sculpted by a god.
‘The Princess is no slouch either.’
I nearly fell for the Princess’s gorgeous features myself. And what about that dress? Diamonds were densely embedded along the bustline of the dress, and each lace ruffle flowing below was dusted with jewel powder that sparkled like stars. It shone magnificently as if announcing she was today’s party protagonist.
If Ian and I were today’s children’s best couple, wouldn’t those two be the adult best couple? Probably everyone inside thought the same.
And some time later.
“His Imperial Majesty the Emperor and Her Imperial Majesty the Empress are entering.”
People’s gazes turned to the massive door again. When the door opened, majestic music filled the hall. A middle-aged couple entered with benevolent smiles. Their clothing, gait, expressions, posture, even their hand gestures overflowed with dignity. When the two ascended the platform, the music stopped as if on cue.
“Everyone must have had a hard time traveling such a long way. Don’t mind us and enjoy yourselves to the fullest.”
After the Emperor’s formal greeting and encouragement ended, music began flowing through the hall again.
“Don’t those two match really well?”
“I suppose.”
“Still, they’re royalty—can you react a little?”
The stars of the first dance time were the Princess and her fiancé. The two were looking at each other with happy smiles as if they owned the world.
Ah, do they actually own the world? The Princess has no siblings, so she’ll become the Empress. In any case, one thing was certain: “I’m envious…”
The two cherished each other dearly. Enough that you could feel it just by looking at their eyes.
After watching the well-matched pair for a while, I turned my head to look at Ian. The moment I met his utterly dry purple eyes: “What are you looking at?”
Sharp words pierced my ears. Would the female lead really be able to like this guy? The future looked bleak.
Only after the Princess and her fiancé’s dance time and the adults’ dance time passed did the children’s dance time begin. Apparently children up to fifteen years old could participate in the children’s dance time. Perhaps because of that, there were not only couples who married early like us but also teams of siblings or friends. We had to do well here to be selected as the best couple.
“This is an important moment. We can’t make mistakes.”
Right before the music started, I whispered while holding Ian’s hand.
“As long as you don’t mess up.”
“You really…”
Unfortunately, before I could continue, the music began flowing, and because of that, we ended up starting a beat late.
“It’s because of you.”
When I stared with resentful eyes:
“It must be because of you.”
He brazenly blamed me. I won’t let this slide.
Press—
Since we’d already messed up anyway, I pressed down hard on Ian’s foot pretending it was a mistake.
“Childish.”
“Ah! I made a mistake because your lead wasn’t smooth. Sorry.”
He just smirked and continued executing the dance moves steadily as if it had no effect. That made me even more irritated. Enough that I thought his usual expressionless face was better. I did my best to step on his feet repeatedly in time with the beat.
‘That look like nothing happened makes me angry.’
The moment I was about to stomp down with all my might:
Clap clap clap—
The music stopped along with applause. The dance time had ended before I could step on him many times.
“Too bad. Looks like it failed.”
Ian specifically pointed out the devastating fact.
“It hasn’t failed yet, okay?”
It’s true. Even if we don’t become the children’s best couple at the dance party, there’s still a chance. The hunting competition to be held next week. Ian just needs to take first place there.
Music flowed again. This time everyone was spending free time—dancing, conversing, and so on.
What should I do? While I was pondering:
▷ Dance with Ian
▷ Go eat dessert alone
A choice appeared before my eyes. Dancing with Ian VS going to eat dessert alone. Of the two, what I chose was going to eat dessert alone.
I regretted gushing about having a good feeling before coming here. Contrary to my premonition, the dance party had failed. Also, dancing with Ian again wouldn’t help much. So I might as well fill my stomach. I left Ian behind and headed toward the table with refreshments. Various appetizing desserts were laid out on the table.
The moment I picked up the most appetizing chocolate cookie, I made eye contact with someone behind me.
“What, why did you follow me?”
“Just because.”
‘What?’
If it were the usual Ian, he definitely would have spent time in a place with no people. But to specifically follow me… A smile gradually crept onto my face.
“You were worried about me?”
“What?”
Ian’s brow narrowed. He must be embarrassed because I saw through his intention immediately.
“I was really looking forward to the dance party, but it didn’t go as planned. You felt bad that I might be disappointed, so you followed me here, right?”
“I said no.”
“Then why did you come here?”
“Are all these cookies yours?”
“…No? That’s not it.”
So he didn’t follow me but came to eat cookies. Feeling awkward, I quietly took a bite of the cookie. As chocolate sweetness spread in my mouth, my mood improved a little. Only after finishing the chocolate cookie did I realize: “Why aren’t you eating?”
“I don’t really like sweets.”
“Then why did you come here?”
“Just because.”
He’s really annoying. But the cookies were too delicious to leave.
‘Whatever. Let’s not care. I’ve finished what I needed to do today anyway.’
Just as I picked up an almond cookie for the second time:
“It’s been a while, my daughter.”
A man’s voice was heard. When I turned my head toward the sound, there was a middle-aged man and a girl my age. Unlike the young ladies who wore dresses that revealed their arms and necks—sleeveless or tube tops—because it was hot summer, she wore a dress that not only covered her arms completely but also came up to her neck.
If the two had something in common, it was that they had silver hair and faces resembling mine. I could tell at once that they were my family.
“Yes, it’s been a while.”
I gave them an utterly formal greeting.
“The Duke’s son becomes more handsome by the day. I’m newly honored that my daughter is connected with the Duke’s son.”
My father’s appearance, ignoring my words and praising the Duke’s son, irritated me. It was behavior befitting someone who handed over his child to a ducal house for his own benefit.
“I’d like to have a deep conversation with my daughter whom I’m meeting after a long time—could you excuse us for a moment?”
Instead of answering, Ian looked at me. It seemed like he was asking if it was okay for him to leave. He must have been concerned, knowing that I wasn’t on very good terms with my family. When I nodded as if to say it was fine, he excused himself with a displeased expression.
“Have a short conversation and come back.”
Even saying something that made us seem quite close.
After left, the three of us remained—me, my sister, and my father.
“You seem to be doing well there.”
Of the three of us, it was my father who started the conversation first.
“Fortunately.”
“Good. Continue to do well like that. While prostrating yourself before the Bellocchio family.”
Even so, to prostrate myself? Is this something to say to a daughter?
In the original work, Elicia followed Duke Bellocchio’s words well. She reported Ian’s every move, even revealing the existence of Ethel whom Ian loved. I thought it was just behavior blinded by jealousy, but maybe she actually did it to look good to the Bellocchio family following her father’s orders—that thought occurred to me.
“Don’t forget. We can only live well if you do well. My father was truly wise. To promise a marriage between descendants in advance.”
“…I’ll handle it.”
I answered halfheartedly because my father’s advice that wasn’t advice was annoying.
“Not ‘handle it’ but do your best to do well. What will you do if you get kicked out of there?”
My sister, who had been silent for a while, opened her mouth. Until now when Father spoke, I was just annoyed, but hearing my sister’s barbed voice, why did I feel upset? Clearly both Father and Sister spoke obnoxiously, but why did it feel different…
‘Is there some hidden backstory?’
In the original game, Elicia had almost no significance. So I knew nothing about information regarding family. Naturally, I didn’t know why relations with family were this bad either.
However, even if I didn’t know other things, I could know one thing. My sister might dislike me, Elicia, but I liked my sister.
“Do your job there well. Don’t come whining that you want to come back.”
I, who had been lost in thought, came back to my senses at my sister’s voice.
“Right. Your sister is giving you good advice.”
“Even if you come back saying it’s hard, there won’t be anyone in this house to welcome you. So just do your role well there.”
Why? Why did I feel like crying the longer she spoke? I couldn’t even refute, just holding back tears. Only then did she see my expression?
“My beloved little sister.”
She suddenly approached, hugged me tightly, and whispered small enough that only I could hear:
“Don’t ever come home again.”
Damn it, unlike her barbed words, her embrace was very warm.
Father and sister left after warning me several times. Because of that, even though delicious food was in front of me, I had no appetite.
As I, having lost motivation, headed toward the terrace:
“Oh, who do we have here? Isn’t this the new daughter-in-law of Duke Bellocchio’s house?”
An unfamiliar middle-aged man suddenly spoke to me.
I wanted to just ignore him, but seeing his expensive clothing, he looked like a high noble like the Bellocchio family. Out of courtesy, I held my dress hem and greeted him. This damn etiquette.
“Watching this wedding, I felt it anew. That the Bellocchio ducal house is truly a great family.”
“Thank you for the compliment.”
“Didn’t they absolutely keep an ancestral promise that could have been ignored?”
“…Pardon?”
What’s with praising in a sarcastic tone?
“Marrying their son to a daughter of the Evra marquis family that’s falling apart.”
This sounded like an insult to me disguised as a compliment. At least I could be certain of this: that guy isn’t on good terms with either the Bellocchio ducal house or the Evra marquis family.
“Or maybe they have a weakness that the insignificant Evra marquis family is holding over them.”
I definitely tried to endure. But isn’t this a bit too much? I was already in a bad mood, so why is he getting on my nerves?
“Are you saying right now that promises between families become old matters once time passes, so they can be broken? Wow, really?”
I deliberately spoke in a loud, ringing voice. Because of that, I felt the surrounding nobles’ gazes turn toward us.
“No, that’s not what I meant.”
“If that’s not what you meant, then what? You knew we married to keep our ancestors’ promise, but you talked about weaknesses!”
“No, that was a joke…”
“That’s a joke? I’m offended! Ian and I are doing really well after getting married!”
“Ah, perhaps you don’t understand jokes well because you’re still young. Then, excuse me.”
The nameless man who had spoken to me hurriedly left. He must have been embarrassed when I pointed out that he picked a fight.
However, perhaps because I picked a fight too loudly, Duke Bellocchio and Ian were approaching me. Since I’ve caused a scene like this, I should finish it properly. I put my hands together neatly. Not to take a respectful posture. Because I had to at least pinch the back of my hand to squeeze out tears.
While pinching the back of my hand, I thought sad thoughts. For example, how we practiced hard to win the children’s best couple at today’s dance party but ultimately failed.
‘Got it!’
My effort succeeded. I felt tears rolling down my cheeks.
“Who made my daughter-in-law cry?”
Even though he saw me talking with that weird guy earlier, Duke Bellocchio deliberately raised his voice as if looking for the culprit. I almost laughed at his voice full of anger. He’s someone who normally has no interest in me at all. Seeing that, I was certain. The man who picked a fight with me earlier isn’t on good terms with the Bellocchio family.
“Sob sob… He was a middle-aged man with brown hair and blue eyes, with many wrinkles around his eyes.”
Perhaps because they were fake tears, no more tears came out. Afraid I’d be caught just pretending to cry, I deliberately raised my hands to cover my face. And I continued speaking while making crying sounds.
“Not content with insulting our Evra family, he even criticized the Bellocchio ducal house for keeping our ancestors’ promise, saying there was a problem. Sniff..”
“I’m curious which bastard made such garbage remarks.”
‘I’m so curious how the Duke will handle this.’
I wanted to see what his expression was like now, what the reactions of the people around were, but I couldn’t see because I was pretending to cry. I could see the situation if I lowered my hands just a little, but if I did that, it would be immediately obvious I wasn’t crying.
What should I do? The moment I was pondering:
‘What?’
I felt a warm sensation on the back of my hand. And then:
“I’ll cover your eyes, so put your hands down.”
Ian said small enough that only I could hear.
“Why…?”
“The mark where you pinched the back of your hand trying to force yourself to cry is showing.”
Oh no. In embarrassment, I lowered both my hands. At the same time, Ian’s palm came into view, and soon his index finger touched near my eyes. It was an action as if wiping away tears.
I too finally stopped crying and smiled awkwardly, whispering to Ian: “Did the mark on my hand show a lot?”
“I saw it because I was close, but the other nobles probably won’t know.”
That was fortunate. As I let out a sigh of relief, a choice window appeared.
▷ Thanks. You’re really smart, aren’t you?
▷ I understand you tried to help me, but I think your behavior right now was very wrong
What kind of nonsense? Obviously the first one, right?
“Thanks. You’re really smart, aren’t you?”
The moment I whispered to Ian:
[Ian’s Temperament has decreased by 1.]
‘No, why on earth!’
Temperament that was far from enough even to increase had decreased. Does this mean I just contributed to Ian’s Temperament becoming worse?
In frustration, I glared at Ian for no reason. Of course, he didn’t seem particularly affected.
“Duke Moretti, was it you who made my daughter-in-law cry?”
Just then, Duke Bellocchio’s voice was heard. It seems the time has finally come to target the guy who made me cry.
Before I knew it, the guy who had picked a fight with me was standing in front of Duke Bellocchio. The nobles, curious about the situation, stood in a circle around them watching. It was as if the dance party had turned into a fight party. Of course, from a spectator’s perspective, this is more interesting.
“Aren’t you ashamed, making a girl so much younger cry?”
“I didn’t make her cry—that daughter-in-law of yours cried on her own.”
“You made her cry on purpose. You’re retaliating because your mineral business has been lackluster due to our family.”
“That’s not it. I haven’t even been paying attention.”
With each word the two men spat out, the atmosphere grew more tense. When I turned my head to look at Ian, our eyes met. As I stared intently, he seemed to understand my intention and nodded slightly.
“Sob sob... Please don’t fight because of me. Maybe I’m too young to endure hearing insults to my family.”
“Don’t cry, Ellie.”
I bowed my head again and made crying sounds, and Ian stood in front of me and patted my shoulder pretending to comfort me. The reason Ian stood in front of me must be to prevent other nobles from seeing me just pretending to cry. He even called me by my nickname for the first time.
I almost laughed at the advanced strategy. That moment:
[Ian’s Temperament has decreased by 1.]
Damn it, Temperament decreased again. Why is this wrong? We’re performing a good-faith act for the family. My hands trembled with anger.
“That’s right. After all, there’s no one who wouldn’t be upset hearing insults to their family.”
“Right. And to say such harsh words to a young child…”
“Ungentlemanly behavior…”
“How upset must she be for her hands to tremble like that?”
Fortunately, things flowed in a direction favorable to us. Though they were misunderstanding my anger at Ian’s disposition decreasing as something else.
“Even now, apologizing to my daughter-in-law would bring less shame to the Moretti family.”
“…Yes, it seems I misunderstood. Please understand, daughter-in-law of the Bellocchio family.”
Insincere words that didn’t even sound like an apology were heard. At this, I moved next to Ian, looked straight at him, and opened my mouth.
“I am Elicia Bellocchio, daughter-in-law of the Bellocchio family.”
“So?”
“Shouldn’t you be saying ‘I’m sorry’ instead of ‘understand’?”
Did my provocation feel impertinent? He glared at me very fiercely. Of course, that didn’t make me nervous. Because there were so many witnesses here, he wouldn’t say harsh words to me or hit me here, at least. So I kept staring at him to not lose either. As a result: “Fine. I’m sorry. Please forgive me.”
I won. Without really answering, I just nodded, and he made an expression like he was irritated.
It was clearly my victory.
***
As expected, the “Best Couple” at the dance party was not Ian and me. The award went instead to a certain count’s children, a brother and sister. Apparently, their sibling bond was so close that even at the dance party they displayed flawless coordination.
‘Since it turned out this way, I’ll just have to make sure Ian wins first place at the hunting competition.’
I smiled bitterly as I returned to the duke’s mansion.
Dragging my tired body, I washed up and was just about to fall asleep.
“The master is calling for you.”
Duke Bellocchio summoned me through the butler.
‘Why on earth is he calling for me now? I’m dead tired.’
I dared not say it aloud, only grumbled inwardly as I hastily put on proper clothes. When I opened the door, the butler bowed. He must have been waiting to escort me to the duke’s office.
“Do you know why Father wants to see me?”
It felt awkward to walk in silence, so I asked the butler.
“It isn’t anything bad, so don’t worry.”
He smiled kindly, though his vague answer only confirmed my suspicion: not bad, but still important enough to summon me this late.
Before long, we arrived at the duke’s office. The butler knocked and opened the door.
“Father, you called for me?”
I entered with a practiced smile and polite tone.
“Sit.”
He gestured to a chair. I hurried over and sat down, eager to get this over with and go to bed. Looking across at him, Duke Bellocchio did seem somewhat worn out, likely from endless duties.
“I can see now why your father recommended you.”
“…Pardon?”
“For thirteen, you’re quick-witted and clever.”
“Thank you.”
Of course I am—I’m an adult inside, after all. Empty praise hardly impressed me.
“When Erlian sparred with Liam, during the etiquette teacher incident, and today with that boy you argued with… all of it has been satisfactory.”
“I’m glad.”
“So, tomorrow I’ve decided to send the Evra Marquisate an additional gift of jewels.”
“Wow, thank you.”
I didn’t feel much—he was rewarding a family I was estranged from, not me.
“Keep it up. If anything happens with Erlian, report directly to me.”
“Yes.”
I gave a polite bow and left for my room. Once again, I was reminded that Elicia only married into this family to be used. The reality stung. But even more bitter was this:
[Name: Erlian Bellocchio (13)
Temperament: 11
Affinity: 14
XX: 0
Relationship with Ethel: Strangers]
Ian, already asleep, had his Temperament stat scraping rock bottom.
It was a bitter night indeed.
“Ian, work hard today too.”
“I don’t need you telling me that. I know.”
“Okay, then I’ll just cheer you on in my heart.”
“Don’t waste your time.”
I waved both arms exaggeratedly at Ian’s back as he headed toward the training grounds. Since we’d failed to become the stars of yesterday’s dance party, Ian absolutely had to win the hunting competition in six days. That’s why I cheered him on as he went to practice swordsmanship. Honestly, I wanted to follow him there, but—
“My lady, we must go.”
“Fine…”
I had another class. The new teacher led me to the room next to where Ian’s etiquette lessons were held. Inside was a white table and a pale-blue sofa, with needles, white cloth, and threads of many colors prepared.
“At first it will be difficult, but with effort, you’ll be able to make something wonderful in time for the hunting competition.”
The new class was needlework.
This was because of an unspoken rule of the hunting competition: noble young ladies embroidered their family crest on a white handkerchief, which they presented to the man they favored on the day of the event. In other words, needless suffering disguised as tradition. I didn’t exactly adore Ian, but we were officially husband and wife, so I had no choice but to make him one.
Duke Bellocchio, assuming a thirteen-year-old wouldn’t know how to sew, had arranged a tutor for me. But—
“My goodness, this is far above the level of most grown noble ladies!”
The teacher was astonished at my skill. Naturally—because I’d received a needlework skill as a quest reward. I swiftly embroidered half the Bellocchio crest on the white cloth in no time. Honestly, when Lala gave me that skill as a “reward,” I’d wanted to strangle him. But it turned out there was a reason after all.
“At this level, I don’t think I have anything left to teach you.”
“You flatter me.”
“You’re only thirteen and already this talented…?”
“I, uh, started when I was five.”
“Even so, you’re amazing! You could even prepare one for the Duke himself.”
Why would I make one for him? I nearly scowled but held it in.
“Does Father also participate in the hunting competition?”
Honestly, I thought not—since I’d never seen him train like Ian.
“Of course. Duke Bellocchio is still called the Sword of the Empire.”
The Sword of the Empire? So that’s why Ian obsesses over swordsmanship—because of that title. But unlike Ian, the duke himself seemed uninterested in swordplay.
“The duke is known across the Empire for his skill. Fifteen years ago, when a great monster attacked the capital, he defeated it alone.”
“What? Really?”
I was stunned. I knew monsters existed in this world—thanks to the original game, where Ian and Ethel fought them together. Some were weak, like slimes, but others were vicious and dangerous. If I remembered right, that event would happen in two or three years.
“But ever since the duchess passed away, he’s set aside his sword and turned his interest to magic.”
The duchess. I gulped, hanging on every word. The topic was strangely forbidden in the mansion, and no one had ever told me about Ian’s mother, Adria. Whenever I’d asked, servants only looked sad and stayed silent.
“There was a rumor the Bellocchio family, strong in swordsmanship but weak in magic, deliberately married magicians to keep the line balanced. So people thought his marriage was political… Oh!”
The teacher clamped a hand over her mouth, realizing she’d said too much.
“Could you tell me more?”
I wanted to know more about Adria, but she avoided the subject.
“Shall we finish the embroidery?”
Her firm smile told me she wouldn’t say another word.
‘Well… it’s not proper to pry too much into the deceased anyway.’
I picked up the needle again.
“I’ve taught many young ladies, but never one as talented as you.”
She praised me throughout the class, then admitted she had nothing left to teach and said goodbye. My first and last needlework lesson.
‘Good thing I don’t have to sit through boring sewing classes anymore.’
I stretched contentedly and enjoyed a snack.
‘Come to think of it, Ian should be back by now…’
Checking the clock, I asked a maid,
“Where’s Ian?”
“He’s still at the training grounds.”
That was odd. His practice should’ve ended when my sewing lesson did, but even after snacking he still hadn’t returned. Was he overexerting himself just because I was cheering him on? Smiling at the thought, I bit into a cookie when suddenly—
▷ Go to the training grounds
▷ Savor cookies and milk
Of course, the training grounds. I had to encourage Ian—
‘Otherwise, how will his Temperament or affection stats ever go up?’
In a blink, I was there. As expected, Ian was still training hard, shirt soaked with sweat. I watched fondly, until a servant approached me, nearly in tears.
“My lady, please stop Lord Erlian.”
“What?”
Why stop him when he was working so hard?
“Look at this heat! If he keeps overexerting himself, he might collapse.”
Ah. That made sense. Health was important—he needed to stay strong for the competition.
“Why didn’t you stop him earlier?”
“He won’t listen to us.”
Judging by his miserable expression, it was true. I sighed and walked over to Ian.
“Ian, stop now.”
“Don’t meddle.”
“How can I not? If you collapse, you won’t be able to train for days.”
“…”
Ignoring me, he kept training.
“If you collapse, you won’t win first place at the competition.”
At that, he paused, turning slowly toward me.
“You think I’m doing this to win first place?”
“Well… because I want you to…?”
“What?”
Usually he hid his emotions, but this time his displeasure was obvious.
“Forget it.”
“I’m not doing this for you. Stop interfering.”
He raised his sword again, slicing the air with sharp swishes.
“Then why are you working so hard?”
When I grabbed his arm, he lowered the sword and looked at me.
“Why should I tell you?”
So prickly. Then, another choice appeared—
▷ Ask why, and urge him to rest
▷ Don’t ask, and leave him alone
I chose the second. Pressing further would only irritate him.
“…Fine. Do what you want. But if you collapse, I won’t forgive you.”
I raised a fist threateningly at face level, and he actually chuckled.
[ Ian’s Affinity +2 ]
To my surprise, his Affinity rose.
‘I threatened him, and Affinity went up? …Well, at least I chose right.’
I sat back in the shade, watching him train. Thankfully, he didn’t collapse, though he staggered with exhaustion when he finally approached me.
“I thought you’d gone back.”
“Hehe, I waited for you. Let’s go together.”
Too tired to protest, he nodded.
“I didn’t think you’d care so much about this competition.”
“…”
“I’ll make sure you shine as the protagonist.”
Because that was how I’d clear my quest. Though, I still had to figure out how.
“I don’t need your help. I’ll do fine on my own.”
“…”
How was I supposed to raise his Temperament stat?
‘Lala, give me a hint…’
But no matter how I pleaded inwardly, Lala didn’t appear.
As we walked, I suddenly spotted something.
“Ah, look…”
A cat lay collapsed on the ground.
“Poor thing, are you okay?”
I knelt at once. The tawny cat was so emaciated it looked near death. No matter how I called, its eyes stayed shut, its body still.
‘Already dead…?’
I stroked it gently, closing my eyes in brief mourning.
“It’s just an animal. Why do all this?”
Ian sounded genuinely baffled. To nobles in this world, animals were merely for hunting.
“Ian, there’s no such thing as a life that deserves to die.”
“I don’t get it.”
“Then memorize it. Life is precious. Unless it’s unavoidable, like the hunting competition, you mustn’t take life lightly.”
Ian would one day kill his wife—me—in the original game. That’s why I had to say this.
“…Fine. I’ll remember it.”
[ Ian’s Temperament +1 ]
At last, his precious Temperament rose. I returned to my room with a satisfied smile.
***
The hunting competition was only three days away. Ian truly seemed focused on winning first place, spending all his time training. He even told me not to come watch anymore, saying my presence distracted him.
“Hmph.”
So, I was bored. Lying on my bed, I wondered what to do and decided to figure out the best way to cheErlian on for the competition. The handkerchief I was going to gift him was already finished.
‘I want to cheer him on, but I also want to see him get annoyed…’
Perhaps it was because his Temperament stat was low. Since he often annoyed me, I wanted to take revenge just once.
“What should I do with this…”
Lying down and pondering, I suddenly recalled something. Something other nobles probably wouldn’t dare to do. Grinning, I quickly called for a maid.
“With just black and yellow fabric, there won’t be any problem.”
I chuckled with a malicious look on my face. The maid who rushed into the room looked surprised, but I paid her no mind. My mind was currently filled only with thoughts of getting back at Ian somehow.
***
On the day of the hunting competition, we arrived at the designated venue, where numerous tables were set up. Each family was given one table. Perhaps because we were a Duchy, our table was fortunately right at the front.
“Please be careful.”
“Thank you.”
I presented the handkerchief I had personally embroidered to Duke Bellocchio, and he tucked it into his inner pocket. Next, “Ian, do well. I’ll be cheering for you with all my might!”
“No, don’t.”
“You don’t need to be embarrassed.”
Ian winced at the sight of the fabric in my hands. I had worked so hard for two days to make this. I hadn’t even let a maid help me; I made it entirely on my own.
“Don’t you dare unfold that.”
“But then my cheering won’t be effective.”
“No, just don’t do it anyway.”
“Embarrassment is fleeting, but memories are forever.”
“I don’t need memories like that.”
He glared at me once as if giving a final warning, then joined the line of participants with Duke Bellocchio.
Left alone at the table, I disregarded Ian’s dislike and dramatically unfurled the black fabric.
★ Hunting Competition 1st Place is Ian’s!★
The black fabric was the background, and the yellow fabric was the text.
That’s right. I made this inspired by the placards used by fans. Embroidering the letters was difficult, but creating the stars on both sides seemed to be the hardest part.
I had sewn every letter with care, hoping he’d be the protagonist of the hunting competition, but Ian was disgusted by it. Even now, he was glaring at my placard as if demanding I fold it up immediately.
But…
‘Wait, who’s that guy?’
Diagonally behind Ian was Liam. That cousin who was jealous of Ian and even initiated the sparring match. He was glaring at Ian.
‘He entered the competition, too. Is that why Ian was so obsessed with it?’
He couldn’t possibly lose to Liam. If that’s the case, I should cheer even harder. I shook the placard with more enthusiasm.
Bang-
A gunshot rang out, and the hunting competition began.
Naturally, the areas where children and adults could hunt were different. Ian headed to Zone A, which was filled with small animals and weak monsters. Zone A wasn’t far from the spectator seats where we were sitting. Since Ian could see the spectator seats at any time, I diligently shook the placard. Perhaps because it was an unfamiliar cheering tool in this area,
“Oh my, that’s truly unique.”
“I’ve never seen a cheering tool like this before.”
The noble ladies looked at my placard with curious expressions before moving on.
“It’s been a long time. You’ve brought something quite distinct.”
Among them was Celine, Liam’s younger sister. She approached me only after the other noble ladies had finished looking and left. Perhaps because she had shown goodwill towards me before, I was very glad to see her.
“Would you like me to show you how to make it? It’s not difficult.”
As I explained step-by-step how to make the placard, she listened intently, nodding her head vigorously.
“The method really isn’t difficult. I think you have a wonderful idea, Madam.”
Madam… that was as burdensome a title as ‘Young Madam.’ I unconsciously squeezed my hand, causing small wrinkles to form on the placard.
“I don’t have a need to make one right now, but I should try making one when I get married later.”
I had easily realized from our first meeting that Celine wasn’t on good terms with her own brother, Liam. Seeing her bitter smile now, it seemed her relationship with her father wasn’t close either. That’s why she didn’t mention making something for her family.
“I…”
With a determined look, she leaned closer to me and spoke in a whisper.
“Be wary of Brother Liam.”
“Pardon?”
She spoke of an obvious fact as if it were a huge secret. I had considered Liam a person of caution since our first meeting. He had shown jealousy towards Ian and kept trying to provoke him.
“I thought Brother Liam would be severely disciplined after causing trouble at the side-branch meeting. But Father didn’t do that.”
Even though Duke Bellocchio was watching, he had only pretended to scold Liam during the side-branch meeting. So, is he siding with his own son after all?
“He only severely scolded him for losing to Erlian. Father stressed repeatedly that he’d punish Liam if he lost to Erlian today. That’s why Brother Liam is incredibly motivated for today.”
It was laughable that he was so motivated just to beat his cousin. However, Ian was equally motivated. Ian had been extending his training hours and practicing diligently. It was probably to take first place in the hunting competition with a much better score than Liam.
Of course, the duplicitous nature of Count Liveri, who flattered Duke Bellocchio while stirring up conflict behind his back, was also funny.
But there was something else that was questionable.
“Thank you for telling me. But is it okay for you to share such information with me?”
Judging by the atmosphere so far, Celine and I are cordial towards each other. However, we’ve only met twice. I was suspicious of her sharing her family’s issues with me. Could she have an ulterior motive?
“I’m worried that Erlian might be harmed. I know talking about this is damaging to my family, but I felt like I had to say something.”
Seeing her kind eyes, I decided to dismiss my suspicion. Come to think of it, this is a game world. Isn’t there always one NPC who is favorable to the player?
‘Anyway, this means I should watch out for Liam and Count Liveri.’
It’s better than being careless. I thanked her once more, and she seemed briefly shy before returning to her table. Alone again, I held the placard high and occasionally shouted Ian’s name.
Just then,
“That fabric is quite striking.”
I was looking at Ian hunting in the distance when a voice came from beside me. I turned my head and met the gaze of the speaker,
‘Wha- what is it?’
I nearly grabbed the person by the collar. It wasn’t because I’m a violent person. It was because the person who spoke to me had a truly surprising visual.
Why? He was just a handsome boy my age smiling at me. The moment our eyes met, the mischievous Lala came to mind. Was it because he had the same blond hair and golden eyes as Lala? This child was definitely not Lala, but he vaguely resembled him.
He just chuckled nervously when I stared at him. Then,
“How unrefined! How many times have I taught you not to stare silently at people like that!”
My father, whom I hadn’t seen since the dance party a week ago, suddenly appeared from behind and grabbed my arm. I wasn’t staring. I was just looking… I felt a little wronged.
“It’s fine, Marquis. It reminds me of the childhood I shared with Sia.”
The blond boy smiled, his eyes curving gently. The fact that his eyes seemed to be glistening with tears must be my imagination.
“Even as a child, you constantly glared at and tormented Angelo, and you still haven’t fixed that habit.”
“Please calm down, Marquis. I actually prefer when Sia acts this way.”
“Even if you are young and childhood friends, a girl should not behave so unrefinedly towards a boy.”
From the conversation, I gathered that the blond boy’s name is Angelo and he’s been close with me since childhood. However, what was bothersome was,
“Sia…?”
The fact that he called me Sia.
“Why? It’s your nickname. I’ve always called you that. Ah, should I use honorifics now?”
“…Well, do as you like. You can speak informally too.”
He was a character I had never seen in the original game. So, he must be a fleeting extra here, too. What did I care about his title or honorifics? Besides, it seemed he was a very old friend of Elicia’s. Therefore, I decided not to worry about how he called me or if he spoke informally. I also spoke informally to him.
“Sia, have you been well?”
“Well, I’ve been fine. But aren’t you going to hunt?”
“I’m not interested in hunting.”
“Then why did you come?”
“I thought I might see you if I came here. I couldn’t make it to the dance party because I wasn’t feeling well.”
“Ah, I see…”
Staring at Angelo continuously felt burdensome. For some reason, he was looking at me with overly glittering eyes. I lowered my head awkwardly due to the intense affection in his gaze.
“I never thought you’d marry the Duke Bellocchio’s son.”
Why did his voice sound so bitter? His affection for his childhood friend must be strong. The fact is, I’m not Elicia.
“How’s married life? Isn’t it difficult?”
“Well, it’s not bad.”
“Good, that’s a relief. If things get tough, talk to me anytime.”
“Why should you be the one she talks to about that?”
Surprisingly, those last words weren’t mine. They were spoken by Ian, who had somehow approached us.
‘What? When did he get here?’
Ian’s impulsive behavior didn’t make sense.
“What’s up? What about the hunting?”
“It was annoying, so I just came back.”
“…What exactly was so annoying?”
“You.”
“And that’s enough to make you stop hunting?”
That was ridiculous. No matter how I thought about it, I hadn’t done anything problematic enough to disrupt his hunting. Besides, there was a significant distance between the hunting area and the spectator seats, so what could possibly be annoying?
‘How did he even see me? He should be focused on hunting.’
This clearly seemed like a provocation from someone with rock-bottom Temperament.
“Be honest with me. You thought you couldn’t get first place, so you’re just blaming me, aren’t you?”
“I am not. If you came to cheer, you should focus on cheering, not messing around.”
“What kind of messing around did I do?”
His gaze went to my lap. No, to be precise, the placard on my lap.
As soon as I realized his gaze, I picked up the placard and shook it.
“Do you want me to cheer like this?”
“…I’d rather you do that.”
“Really? I thought you said it was embarrassing.”
“Just do that instead. Don’t go flirting with strange guys. What if bad rumors start?”
“What rumors?”
He glared at me with his lips tightly shut, as if he didn’t even want to utter the words. When I pressed him about the rumors, he slowly spoke.
“You’re married to me. What if strange rumors start because you’re messing around with guys like him?”
“But he’s my childhood friend.”
“If strange rumors spread, it will tarnish our family’s name.”
“Fine, I’ll cheer hard. Go hunting right now!”
Even when I rushed him, he had no intention of moving. This is not the time to be fooling around. Doesn’t catching even one more animal increase his chances of getting first place?
“Why aren’t you going?”
“I’ll go when they leave.”
Ian gestured with his head to the side of me. The people beside me were Angelo and my father.
“I apologize. We seemed to have inconvenienced you.”
“I’m sorry, Duke’s son.”
In the end, the two apologized and quickly left.
“Are you satisfied now?”
He nodded and headed back to Zone A. As I watched his retreating figure with a satisfied expression,
[Ian’s XX has increased by 2.]
An unknown stat went up.
‘What the hell is XX?’
At first, I thought it was just an error. Since Lala wouldn’t answer me properly, I thought I didn’t need to worry about it. That was because even when other stats went up, XX always remained the same. But now, that unknown XX has gone up. What is that, exactly?
‘Lala.’
I called Lala’s name in my mind, but he didn’t appear.
‘Lala. Come out, please.’
…
Lala is truly useless. He doesn’t appear when I actually need him.
‘Next time I see her, I must ask what XX is.’
In the distance, I could see Ian swinging his sword. I diligently held up the placard, just in case Ian saw it.
About ten minutes passed.
‘I’m bored…’
I was starting to yawn. But as a noble young lady, I couldn’t openly yawn, could I? I pretended to smell the placard, covering my face, and took a big yawn. That should be subtle enough…
“Sia, you must be very tired.”
He must have seen it. Angelo, who had quickly left to avoid Ian, was back at our table.
“I came because you looked bored.”
“Yeah, the hunting competition is dragging on, so it’s a bit boring.”
“Really? Then how about we take a short walk nearby?”
“A walk?”
It was a tempting offer, given my boredom. So I lifted myself off the seat, but,
“Hmm, no. I’ll just stay here.”
I sat down again.
“Why? You said you were bored.”
“I feel like I should keep my spot, anyway.”
I had the placard in my hands, which I had worked hard to make in the hope of Ian winning first place. It was a cheering item I could only use today. So, I had to keep holding it until the children’s hunting competition was over. Of course, seeing Ian’s disgusted expression was also enjoyable. So, I decided to endure the boredom.
“That’s a shame. I wanted to take a walk with you and talk about the old days.”
“Well, maybe if the opportunity arises sometime in the future…”
I felt disappointed myself when the handsome boy looked disappointed.
“Yeah. The opportunity will come someday.”
“I guess so.”
I answered vaguely. Because I didn’t think I’d ever get the chance to walk with him. I truly believed he was a character I had never seen in the original game. With this appearance, even if he were a fleeting extra, he would have left a strong impression.
“If you ever have a hard time, make sure to find me first. I’m confident I’d do anything for Sia.”
“Oh, really? Thanks.”
I didn’t have high expectations about what a boy my age could possibly help with.
“Sia, just a moment.”
Then Angelo’s face came close to mine. Startled, I instinctively pulled my head back, and his hand reached toward my hair.
‘What is he doing? What kind of development is this?’
My mind was in turmoil. I stared at his face in confusion.
“Ah, there was a flower petal on your head.”
He had already taken his hand away from my hair and showed me a petal. I thought he was trying to flirt, thinking he was a character who had a crush on me. I guess I’ve become too jaded and corrupted.
Feeling awkward, I gave Angelo a forced smile and belatedly remembered what I was supposed to be doing. It was to cheer for Ian. I lightly shook my head and turned my gaze back to Zone A, where Ian was hunting, when, “Ian, why are you coming back again?”
Ian was once again heading toward our table, abandoning his hunt.
“Why is that guy here again?”
“He came to hang out because I looked bored. I told you he’s my childhood friend.”
“Childhood friend, my foot.”
Ian couldn’t hide his displeasure. He looked several times more sensitive than usual.
‘I have no choice.’
I was about to send Angelo away to avoid upsetting Ian, when,
“Hello. I’m Angelo Leglorie, Sia’s old friend. I didn’t get a chance to properly introduce myself earlier.”
He greeted Ian with a very relaxed expression, as if he wasn’t bothered by him at all.
“Sia?”
“Ah, I call Elicia, Sia.”
“Sia, my foot.”
The atmosphere at our table instantly chilled. As a result, the noble’s gazes at other tables turned to us. I worried that strange rumors about the three of us would really spread among the nobles. Moreover, since Ian clearly disliked Angelo, separating them was the priority.
“Are the introductions over? Angelo, it was nice seeing you. Can you go back now?”
“…Fine. See you later.”
I confirmed that Angelo had left and turned my attention back to Ian.
“There, Angelo’s gone, right? Hurry and go hunting.”
“It’ll be over soon anyway. I caught more than enough.”
His confident expression put my mind at ease. He had hunted ferociously despite being conscious of the table where I was sitting.
As expected…
“This cheering tool gave you strength.”
“It did not.”
Ian immediately denied my statement with a serious expression. He’s really too much, honestly.
***
Just as Ian had said, it didn’t take long for the hunting tournament to end.
After a brief wait, the award ceremony began. Duke Bellocchio took 3rd place in the adults’ division. Honestly, I thought he’d fail to place since he was always holed up in his office, but that was unexpected. His swordsmanship hadn’t completely rusted, it seemed.
I was even more eager to see Ian’s results. After all, as the heir of House Bellocchio, known as the Empire’s Sword, and someone who had trained diligently, surely he would get a good result.
At last, the children’s hunting tournament award ceremony began. Quietly, I lifted my placard, praying for Ian to take 1st place.
“3rd place, Liam Liveri.”
As applause rang out, Liam climbed the podium with a sour face. I nearly burst out laughing. Didn’t Celine say it herself? That Liam had been grinding his teeth, desperate to beat Ian. Count Liveri must be fuming, too.
Third place, that’s all?
I sneered at Liam, who couldn’t hide the look of frustration on his face.
“And in 2nd place…”
Earlier, Ian had looked completely at ease, as if he had already achieved his goal. So of course, I thought he’d be 1st. I waited expectantly for the announcement.
The judge opened his mouth and spoke a name.
“2nd place, Erlian Bellocchio.”
“…What?”
Unable to accept the result, I blurted out loudly. And then—
[★Lala★’s Quest <Make Ian the Star of the Founding Festival!> has failed.]
[Temperament has decreased by 3.]
[As a penalty, Affinity and Temperament can now only be checked once a year.]
[The game’s difficulty has increased.]
This had to be a mistake. Not being able to check the most important stat, Temperament, every day? And worse, all of Ian’s effort and training for today had been wasted.
But then—
“What the…?”
Ian didn’t look bothered at all. No, he actually looked satisfied. I thought I was seeing wrong, but it was true. Maybe he had achieved his real goal.
So 1st place wasn’t his aim after all.
His goal must have been to beat Liam, not to come in first. Judging from the way he smiled at Liam, who was glaring at him furiously.
I felt drained. The 1st place prize went to some baron’s child, who teared up with joy upon receiving the jewels. That prize should have been Ian’s. I could only smack my lips in frustration.
When the tournament wrapped up—
“Why only 2nd place?”
I whispered the question to Ian, who had returned to the table, though I couldn’t raise my voice.
“Why are you the one upset?”
“Well, I thought you’d take 1st.”
“You’re the one who said life isn’t something to be taken lightly. Monsters are lives too. So I only hunted enough to beat Liam.”
“That’s completely different, idiot!”
Why did he only listen to me when it was inconvenient? I snapped without thinking, and Ian smirked. Wasn’t he always expressionless before? Now that I thought about it, he’d started showing more expressions lately.
“There was even something that reminded me of you.”
“What was that?”
Ian jerked his chin in a direction. I turned my gaze to see a rabbit grazing peacefully.
“As a courtesy, I left that one alone. Besides, it wasn’t a monster anyway.”
The way he said it, as if he was being considerate, only annoyed me further. I was glaring at him when—
“Let’s go.”
The duke turned his back and strode toward the carriage without another word. He didn’t even check if we were following, as though he knew we would.
“Ian, let’s…”
I hadn’t even finished asking him to come when Ian also strode quickly toward the carriage. His Temperament must really be too low—he didn’t even bother with the courtesy of waiting.
Sighing softly, I started to walk, but froze when I spotted a familiar face. It was Ian’s cousin, Liam. He was fuming, snorting through his nose, with a sword in hand—unsheathed, which was unsettling. Normally I would’ve ignored him.
But the problem was, Liam was walking straight toward Ian. Celine’s warning flashed in my mind.
“Be careful of Brother Liam.”
He had worked hard, grinding his teeth to beat Ian, only to place lower. Of course, he’d blame Ian. If he lost control and attacked Ian with his sword…
No way.
Glancing around, I spotted a large tree branch. I grabbed it as Liam drew closer to Ian.
“Ian, watch out!”
I shouted, swinging the branch toward Liam. Surely he’d fall back from the blow, unable to attack Ian.
But instead—
“Ahhh!”
I swung, but the branch was too heavy, and I lost my balance, tumbling and making a fool of myself. Thankfully, Ian reacted quickly, drawing his sword and turning just in time to block Liam’s strike.
Clang! The ring of steel against steel echoed in my ears.
“How childish, Liam.”
“I told you to call me brother!”
“And this is what an older brother does?”
The atmosphere turned sharp and tense. Even if I tried to intervene, the two of them wouldn’t listen.
I quietly got back on my feet, dusted off my dress, and looked toward the duke. He had stopped walking and was approaching, but clearly had no intention of intervening—just watching.
What kind of father is that?
He was the strangest father I’d ever seen.
Then again, mine wasn’t any better—selling me off for money.
Perhaps because Duke Bellocchio was watching, Liam finally sheathed his sword with a huff.
“You… you cheated somehow, didn’t you?”
“Cheated?” Ian echoed, tilting his head like he truly didn’t understand.
“You must have! That’s the only reason you beat me.”
“Hardly. Maybe you’re just too lacking?”
“No! You tricked me somehow!”
Liam whined like a child, unable to accept his loss. Ian only smirked as if it were laughable.
Since the duke was watching, Liam wouldn’t dare attack physically again. I, too, just sat back to enjoy the show.
Come on, Ian, win this. Woo-hoo.
I gave a halfhearted cheer in my head.
But the fight ended quickly.
“You’ll see! Just wait!”
It seemed Liam finally regained some sense, running off in retreat. But not before glaring at Ian and me like a storybook villain, and bowing politely to the duke. The contrast was so ridiculous I almost laughed.
Once it was over, the duke turned again toward the carriage.
“Ian, let’s hurry and go too.”
I grabbed his arm to hurry him, but strangely, Ian just stood there, staring at me.
[Affinity with Ian has increased by 3.]
The sudden boost confused me. Had he finally fallen for my looks?
“Your dress…”
I glanced down and nearly gasped. The fabric at the knees had torn when I fell, and even though I’d brushed it off, dirt still smeared here and there.
…So it wasn’t my beauty, but simply that I’d helped him. If that’s the case, I’d rather have gotten Temperament points instead.
On the way back to the duke’s estate, Ian, the duke, and I barely spoke. I tried to bring up Liam, but both ignored me, as though the attack had never happened. In that case, couldn’t the game at least have skipped over this dull travel scene?
Come to think of it, there haven’t been any skips lately.
Earlier in the game, travel scenes had often been skipped, as though we’d teleported. But these days, everything played out in full detail—walking all the way to the training grounds, or sitting for hours in the carriage until my back ached.
Is it because of the difficulty increase?
Whenever I completed or failed a quest, the game’s difficulty went up. That must be affecting it. But to remove even the skip function? This game was harsher than it seemed.
At last, after enduring the boredom, we arrived at the estate.
“Go and rest.”
Without so much as a glance, the duke headed straight to his chambers. Oddly enough, just being physically away from him lifted a weight off my chest. I turned to Ian with a lighter expression, pretending to fuss over him.
“Tired?”
“No matter how tired, one should always keep clean and neat.”
His reply was baffling. Why was he saying that?
I realized only after following his gaze—toward the hem of my skirt.
“I’ll have you know, I was going to wash up anyway.”
I brushed at my skirt. True, there had been times when I was too tired and collapsed into bed without washing, but did Ian really notice that? Still, tonight, covered in dirt as I was, I certainly would wash.
“I thought you meant you’d sleep without bathing.”
“No, I’ll wash. I was worried you might be tired.”
He gave a small laugh, clearly not believing me, and headed off—to a different bathroom, as usual.
“I’ll wash longer than you, just watch.”
Feeling oddly guilty, I muttered at his retreating back before going to my own bath.
Inside, my dirtied dress was discarded by Anna, and I sank my weary body into warm water.
“Today, my lady was truly the most magnificent!”
Startled by the state of my dress, Anna was moved nearly to tears as I explained what had happened.
“Me?”
“You threw yourself in front of danger to protect Lord Erlian. Even ruining your dress in the process.”
“Well… I suppose so.”
I recalled Liam’s threatening approach and nodded. But what would his father say? According to Celine, Count Liveri wouldn’t scold him for attacking Ian, but for the shameful act of doing so in front of the duke—and for placing below Ian on top of it.
Should I tell Duke Bellocchio?
That his brother, Count Liveri, was a two-faced man? But would he believe me? Normally, Count Liveri seemed eager to please him. What if speaking up only made me look suspicious?
I wrestled with the thought for a long time, but no answers came. Still, my body felt refreshed after the bath.
When I returned, Ian was already lying in bed, eyes closed.
“Ian, are you asleep?”
I whispered as I lay down, but no answer came.
Darkness filled the room as Anna, seeing me settled, blew out the lights.
“Liam is bad enough, but Count Liveri is worse. He’s two-faced. We should prepare for him. I don’t know how yet, but we should.”
I muttered while staring at Ian’s profile. He kept his eyes shut, showing no reaction, so I kept talking.
“You handled Liam on your own before, and that was impressive. But now you’ve got me, so it’ll be easier, like today.”
“…”
“But really, how long are you going to pretend to sleep?”
I poked his arm lightly, and he flinched.
“…How did you know?”
“Come on, you know how much I pay attention to you. Of course I’d notice.”
A lie. I’d simply noticed because his status window hadn’t popped up, meaning he wasn’t actually asleep.
“Anyway, I’ll help deal with Liam, so don’t worry too much.”
“That’s none of your concern. Just sleep.”
Clearly annoyed, he turned his back to me.
Seriously. Even when I offer to help, he brushes me off.
I fell silent, and the room grew still. I hovered on the edge of sleep but forced myself to stay awake—I wanted to check something. After a while—
[Do you wish to check the status window?]
▷ Yes
▷ No
Finally! I chose yes, and clenched my fists in frustration at what appeared—
[Name: Erlian Bellocchio (13)
Temperament: ?
Affinity: ?
XX: 2
Relationship with Ethel: Strangers]
This was what Ian’s status window looked like now. After failing the quest, Temperament and Affinity had truly become hidden.
Right before the tournament, his Temperament had been 11. After the 3-point drop, that meant…
Only 8…
His Temperament was sinking fast. All the effort, for nothing gained.
Lala, I won’t forgive you.
I cursed silently. As I drifted toward sleep, one thought struck me—
Wait, XX isn’t hidden.
It was the only stat still visible. Until now, it had never changed, so I’d ignored it as a glitch. But today, it had jumped by 2. That alone made it stand out.
I recalled when it rose—when Ian saw me speaking with Angelo. He’d seemed very wary then. Could XX stand for wariness? As in Ian’s heightened vigilance toward others?
If so, then XX was just as important to manage as Temperament. That thought kept me awake long into the night.
